Provenance & Extra Info	This work was originally in the collection of actors Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton and was sold by Mrs. Laughton at Sotheby's in 1966. (Illustrated on page 29 of that catalog). This piece been included in a number of touring exhibitions, including "Morris Graves" at the San Francisco, California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1948 (Page 16 in the catalog). It was also included in the important exhibition "The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia 1860-1989" at the Guggenheim Museum. Later the work was auctioned under the name "Joyous Young Pine" and it appears to be known by that name as well as "Lonesome Pine."

California sculptor Leon Richman was educated at the renowned Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Based in Santa Ana, California, he has enjoyed years of success in commercial art, working with clients such as Disney and Dreamworks. However, Richman’s soul and passion have always been deeply rooted in the finer arts.

Leon Richman began his sculpture exploratory in medium-to-large scale marble figures. His desire to capture the beauty of the human form in all its dimensions soon led him to a more pliable medium, allowing more freedom in the creative process. And now, in the tradition of Italian sculptor, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and French sculptor Auguste Rodin, Richman has created an inspired collection of figurative bronzes.

Richman has made the physical interpretation of the human spirit his hallmark, not settling for a simple duplication of a posing body, but instilling his sculptures with the same passion he feels in their creation. Each possesses its own unique spirit and personality. Richman’s goal for each sculpture is that the piece strikes an emotional chord and delivers a message that resonates with its viewer.

Richman’s sculptures begin in clay. And, with very few exceptions, he employs live models to capture the necessary realism. He will use several models for a single sculpture to portray proper muscle development.

Richman directs each step of the production process to insure the absolute finest work. He monitors every stage, from mold casting and creation of the wax model, through bronzing and application of the final patina.
Spring’s Renewal

The centerpiece of the Richman collection is Spring’s Renewal. This sculpture took over a year to create. Richman brings his art to a new level with the intertwining of six bronze figures, four erect and two lying prone atop the forest floor.

Each sculpture was created individually with the final goal of a group scene. Once all figures were completed, Richman composed the figures into a single sculpture. This remarkable sculpture measures 37” tall and when positioned upon its custom designed black marble pedestal, it stands over 6 ‘ tall.

Flight of Fancy

With Flight of Fancy Richman takes on the challenge of a swinging form and delivers it with the utmost grace. This was an extremely difficult piece because of the unique pose and the limited time the model could hold position. During the initial stage, Richman photographed the subject on a park swing so he could capture the proper movement of figure and hair.

The outstanding Richman collection of bronze figurative sculptures includes whimsical nymphs, athletes, dancers, historic busts, commissioned portraits and more.

Richman's work has been showcased in high profile art publications including American Art Collector. Editors here describe Richman as among the "best and most collectible sculptors on the scene today".

Art Brokerage CEO Donna Rose and friends attended the opening of the Robert Indiana show at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland Maine on June 2oth. Robert Indiana is now 81 years old and lives on an island off of the Main Coast called Vinalhaven. We also attended the Andrew Wyeth retrospective at the Farnsworth Museum which included original paintings from the Andrew Wyeth Collection. Paintings featured were "Night Sleeper", "Distant Thunder" and "Wind From the Sea".

HAMBURG, GERMANY - Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg presents Roy Lichtenstein - Posters - First composed: C. 70 exhibits from the period 1962 – 1997, on view through March 1, 2009. In all, Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) designed something like seventy posters, which are brought together here for the first time. They give an overview of the prolific motives which fill the world of an artist who, with his trademark dot matrices painted in a two-dimensional plane, became a bye-word for American Pop Art together with Andy Warhol.

Lichtenstein already designed a poster for his first exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1962 – his last dates from the year of his death. The sheets trace the course of his series of works from the 60s through to the 90s.

A number of near-contemporary posters with reproductions will be on view alongside the posters designed by Lichtenstein. The exhibition, complemented by work by other artists of the American Pop Art school as well as by comprehensive background materials, will give an insight into the work of one of the best-known artists of our times.

On the occasion of this exhibition, the collector Claus von der Osten has donated his almost complete collection of Lichtenstein posters to the Museum. An illustrated, fully coloured catalogue will be published by Prestel-Verlag.

Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 27, 1923 in New York City. He studied a degree of fine arts at Ohio State University. Hoyt L. Sherman, one of his teachers, had a significant impact on his work. He later entered the graduate program at Ohio State University and in 1949 received an M.F.A. He had his first solo exhibition at the Carlebach Gallery in New York in 1951. He later moved to upstate New York and began using an Abstract Expressionism style. He began doing Pop paintings with carton images in 1961. This same year Leo Castelli started displaying Lichtenstein’s work at his New York gallery and held a solo show for him in 1962. The entire collection was purchased before the show opened. He became famous all over the world.

He once stated, "I think my work is different from comic strips- but I wouldn't call it transformation; I don't think that whatever is meant by it is important to art".

The first museum exhibition was held in 1967 at the Pasadena Art Museum in California. Solo shows were also held that year at museums in Amsterdam, London, Bern and Hannover. He donated in 1996 154 prints and two books to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, which became the largest single repository of his work. In 1997 Roy died of pneumonia.

Child's Play: The Art of Wayne Thiebaud

I was watching a documentary recently about a little pre-schooler, Marla Olmstead, who ostensibly paints beautifully composed abstracts. They are vivid, mostly cheerful celebrations of paint, and some of them are actually impressive. Unquestionably, though, they look as if someone much older had finished them. Dutifully, the documentary raises the question of whether her father has helped her paint them, or maybe is simply painting them himselfin my view they would be fine works of art even if Mr. Olmstead had been able to paint them only by pretending to be his little daughter. Now that would have been a more interesting, and certainly much funnier, investigation. But what struck me was how the director of My Kid Could Paint framed the story of Marla’s sudden emergence on the scene: as the triumph of innocent, playful joy in a jaded, postmodern art world with deadly serious pretensions of speaking truth to power, celebrating the abnormal, casting a cold eye on consumer culture, trying strenuously to be obscure and difficult, and in general doing what the French applaud as epater le bourgoisiemore or less giving the finger to the middle class, the average guy, the uninitiated.

I’ve always distrusted any view of art that assumes you need to know the secret handshake in order to really appreciate what’s going on. Matthew Barney is a genius of some kind, no question. His films are powerful and hypnotic. But I don’t have a clue what he’s doing, and I’m guessing most people who wandered with me through his Guggenheim show felt the same way. The movie about little Marla got me thinking about Matisse and his desire to paint pictures that would sooth the viewer, like an easy chair at the end of the day. Who would claim to have that goal, as an artist, now? But isn’t the art we love the art that matters most to us? Wasn’t that what Van Gogh and the Impressionists and the post-Impressionists were doing: painting images they believed viewers would love? Chagall, Klee, Janet Fish, Fairfield Porter, and many other painters were playing the same game, not trying to shock anyone with their work, but to get people to look eagerly at the world, or at least at their paintings of it. And, in the process, open a few minds, soften a few spirits, here and there.

In this regard, Wayne Thiebaud, comes to mind. His recent landscapes construct an imaginative world with its own set of rules and laws: an alternate universe, a heightened version of the view you get from the window of a jet rising into the sky. They are visionary masterpieces, a kind of wish fulfillment, the work of a man painting exactly what he most wants to see. His world doesn’t exist anywhere but on his canvases, but in some ways, like Plato’s forms, they strike the viewer as more real and alive than the world we drive though every day. From the beginning, as in these landscapes, his simple, guileless rule has been to simply paint what he loves to paint. Cakes, candy, ice cream cones, hot dogs, anything that conveys delight. This was just as true of Chardin, centuries ago: nothing was too humble for him as a subject, as long as it easily surrendered its living spirit to his brush. The aim for all the artists I’ve named is delight in the object depicted and delight in the quality of paint. It’s child’s play. How difficult that spirit is to sustain, the joy of a child at play. It’s not a quality present in all great art, but it’s the heart of all the painting I love most. It’s so much more expedient, in the art world now, to be dark, sardonic, and oh so serious.

Thiebaud’s success was as guileless as his art. In the early 60s, he walked the streets of Manhattan looking for a gallery, with his canvases rolled up under his arm, getting laughed out of one gallery after another. “Let me tell you something, Mr. Thiebaud. You are no Picasso,” one gallery owner said. Thiebaud smiled and said, “You’re right. I’m not.”

Wayne Thiebaud told CBS Sunday Morning several years ago, “I’d painted these eight or ten pies on a plate and thought nobody will take me seriously now. But I couldn’t leave it alone

That’s exactly what makes his art so compelling. He couldn’t help himself. He painted the only way he could bring himself to paint, and he had the courage believe in what he was doing and not do what others might think was more worthwhile or marketable, even though it made him feel like a lightweight, a bit of a fool. Exhausted that day, rejected by everyone, he paused in the doorway of Allan Stone’s gallery, trying to work up the courage to go in.

As Stone told CBS: “I hollered out, can I help you? ‘No, I just want to rest here,’ he said. What are those under your arm? ‘They’re rolled up paintings. You wouldn’t be interested. Nobody else is.’ When I first saw them my reaction was, this guy is nuts. There’s just these rows of pies and cakes and they were silly looking. But after a while there was a kind of insistence and integrity about them that was undeniable.”

Stone gave Thiebaud his chance. The rest is history. Few careers have been more blessed. His timing was incredibly lucky. Pop Art was taking hold. His work looked as if it were part of the larger movement, though it had none of that cold, ironic distance from its subject that Pop Art mostly used to create a sense in the viewer that a Warhol soup can, for example, is looking down on the popular culture it feeds and feeds upon. Thiebaud’s paintings didn’t really fit the category. They were acts of love.

Thiebaud's first show in 1962 sold out. The Museum of Modern Art actually bought one of his paintings. It was a fairy tale beginning. Stone said, “He was amazed anyone would buy them. So was I.” And, for him, the fairy tale has never ended. His paintings just get better and better.

“When people look at your paintings what do you want them to see?” he was asked.

Thiebaud’s answer is a model of the sort of absolute humility many artists would do well to emulate: “I want them to laugh a little. I haven’t the slightest idea what art is. But to be a painter is something you have to prove. You are never fully convinced of what you’re doing. It’s part of the joy of it. You keep hoping.”
