You see, as I have mentioned before, Dara and I have been leveling not one alt, but two.

We’d do 5 levels on each, before switching to the other, which allowed us time to get rested XP bonus, and 5 levels is just long enough to get sick of one toon, before switching to the other… and 5 levels on that one was just long enough to get bored doing the same content we did the days before, and then we would switch.

It’s been a bit like Bear and Cassie with their leveling, where they stay together XP wise, so that they ding each level together…

except…

Dara and I are not wife and husband…

and we never dinged together…

and she cheats…

although she will claim I cheat…

which is her justification for her to cheat…

But I don’t mind.

I have given her head starts… 1.5 levels I think was the most, but that wasn’t uncommon…

by the end of the night I would have overtaken her…

which to her was evidence that I was cheating…

which meant she could cheat…

but to me was evidence of my racial superiority (my toons may be Dwarven and Human, but they have the brains of a Gnome).

A few things have dawned on Dara lately.

• Gnome knows how to level fast, because he knows where the quest items are from the other 4 characters he’s leveled through here.
• If she waits long enough, she has no downtime… cause she doesn’t get off her mount, and I have no downtime.
• Mana regen isn’t an issue… if you don’t use it.
• Spell power is not increased by agility… but what the hell… Gnome’s doing the killing, so she might as well take the agility upgrade.
• It takes her 10 times as long to sort her bags out at the vendor than it takes me, because I have addons for that… whereas she has separate, unsorted, non-autoselling bags.
• If she just waits long enough… messages me out of game to verify I am not coming back on… then she can sneak in a few sneaky XP bars.
• Rogues are for stealth and poisons… but as Arivina always says “stealth and poisons are optional for rogues… otherwise they would be passive abilities”.

So  yeah, I logged on the other day.. told the slacker to log on so we could get the last 5 bars before 85… she logged on… dinged… and I was owned.

The guild thought it was funny…

Dara thought it was funny…

Me… I quietly got my 5 bars in an hour…

Then caught up the 3 levels I was behind her other alt…

But, she’s the cheater!

(Ohh  yeah, she messaged me tonight to tell me the server would be down by the time I logged on… do you think she was logged on at the time… cheater!)

I’m sitting on a train that’s stopped due to signal failure ahead.

No, I’m on a train that’s reversed back to a previous station so people can get off.

I’m sitting here wondering whether I should be patient, or maybe I should get off, put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.

It’s the 1st step that’s a killer.

Oh, and that’s how I am finding WoW right now. It’s broken, too many things wrong.

Do I get off, or stay on?

Time…

It definitely doesn’t help that I haven’t had the time to keep up with the news. Even if I had read just one of Cynwise’s posts I would have realized that the best way to greet 5.04 was to wipe everything and start fresh.

Well, I’ve read that now… when I have some time I will return, wipe the adding, wipe the toolbars, wipe it all and start fresh… one toon at a time.

Time…

Damn you time.

The time to clear it all out.

The time to add one piece back at a time and make sure it works for me.

The time to retrain my fingers, my brain.

The time to do this across 6 toons, 9 specs (assuming I don’t bother to respec the other dual specs).

Time…

Someone mentioned this was the month to prepare for MoP… I’m not sure if that’s enough time and even if it is, which toons to I focus on as I can’t level them all at once (well I could, but then I’d be cursing because I wasn’t in level 90 BGs and Arenas.

• Gnomeaggedon: you’d kill me, I’d kill me if I didn’t… but I think for now (as for a long time), it’s down to one spec.
• Squidly: He’s been my favorite alt for a long time, I think he needs a place near the lead… but that’s two specs, heals and dps…
• Getafixsnow: I was enjoying the Druid, I guess I will drag him along sometime, but I will feel compelled to have both specs running… I raised him for the versatility, guess I need to continue, at least get the basics sorted.
• Gnomeadeaden: Afterthought… He can wait.
• Nocanhazgold: The only melee toon I have ever enjoyed (even if that enjoyment waivers)… He’s not even 85… decisions decisions…
• Enslavegurl: Dirty dirty Warlock. Not yet 80… back burner…
• Snowdabow: My 1st ever character, a Horde Hunter… only level 51. I jumped on him the other day… then remembered why he has been level 51 for 6 years. Meh… he can wait another 6 years.

Time…

I figure it is going to take me a night per toon just to sort out the toolbars, the adding and to get the most basic of feels for them.

At my current play rate (with work consuming most days and nights and weekends mainly given over to Odin), I figure I will have them sorted a month into MoP… mmm maybe I should buy that one day… when I have the time.

I need to get it all going sooner rather than later, I need to work on those PvP achievements… Ohhh hang on… they are all Battlemasters now…

Remind me again why I’m doing this?

Dara and I have been leveling our closet alts through a mix of activities.

• Questing – I kill the mobs, she collects the loot (assuming she isn’t too busy skinning).
• Dungeons – I do the killing while she finds the right corridor to where the rest of the party is.
• BGs – I head to the graveyard while she stealths on the outside (Hell, she remembered to stealth even found the stealth button, that’s a good start).

We have been leveling in tandem, so we would start each level kind of together, but somehow I will always reach the next level 1st (she calls me a cheater).

It’s not a big issue, I let her catch up… sometimes.

What is an issue though is this funny quirk, I’m going to call it a bug, where if one of us levels up (yes, 50% of the time me), that one gets kicked from the BG (or instance for that matter) queue.

So imagine if you will...

1. Join BG queue as team
2. 20 minutes into the 3 minute average wait time, one of us dings.
3. Some short time later (let’s say less that another 30 minutes for the 3 minute queue), the BG/Instance pops and in we go…

Well, in one of us goes, because the other was kicked from the queue when they leveled.

Fortunately we are on voice comms, so most of the time the biggest loss is the previous x times average BG queue we have waited.

However some times one of us clicks enter battle without thought (often when we have rushed back to the PC to see the pop and frantically enter so we can play together, only to discover the other wasn’t in the queue).

Then we have to choose between deserter debuff or solo BG.

I kind of understand the logic, even if it is incorrect.

For dungeons any level up might mean a new instance selection, so start again… but…

In BGs the selection only changes every 5 levels, with the change of brackets.

It’s only a minor thing I know, but it burns time and divides our leveling… and it’s no where near as bad as an interrupted Mage table…

Dara: Whoops sorry I think it was me… but I clicked at least.

You see, that’s one thing I have confirmed playing a dirty Lock… you can interrupt Soul Wells and just start them up again… but with Mage tables you get the 5 minute cooldown, just cause some over eager player clicked on the move, or forgot they had clicked but remembered it was time to buff.

Meh, you probably have enough minor annoyances of your own to read about mine.

Out of the closest… again.

So just for the record… yes I have a Warlock, an Affliction Warlock..

But I am wondering what rock the Bear has been hibernating under, because the rest of you you know I have had it for a long time.. some time in 2008 I started my Lock Twinking adventures with Twinking your level 19 Warlock: Part 1. Introduction. The thing is, I could never bring myself to finish the experience, so the Lock was languishing at level 17 for 4 years.

There has been a long quiet spell in our guild lately and Dara and I found ourselves playing BGs over and over again… it was starting to get stale. One of the problems with BGs is the scenery doesn’t change too often, so I decided to change the personal scenery and add the Lock to my BG stables (currently housing Mage, Shaman, Druid, and an unloved DK).

So the Lock got dragged out of storage, Dara dug up her young Shaman and we started the leveling process.

That didn’t last long… REROLL!

Not long after that we rerolled… Did I say I liked the Lock?

Now we had two alts each, A Lock and a Pally for me… A Shaman and a Rogue for Dara… leveling in tandem.

One of the advantages of leveling on one character for 5 levels, then switching to the other, is there isn’t much time to get sick of the 1st one… at the 1st sign of boredem, we just switch toons.

One of the disadvantages is it feels like we just completed that painful collection quest… oh yeah we did… on the other toons.

That Mage…

There was a moment, early on, where I found myself face to face with a Horde Mage in WSG.

So I killed a Mage!

and yes I liked it.

Stupid Mage should have iceblocked…

Lessons learned

Our “juniors” are now well into their 70′s and some things are very clear now.

• I do the killing in this party!
  Somehow, Dara always managed to arrive at the scene of a fight as I dispatch the last of the 10 mobs I engaged.  If she dismounts at all, it’s only to loot… but then I guess someone has too… I have already run off to the next pack of mobs either cackling quietly, or banging my shield against my head.
• Melee in PvP is hard(er)
  Target Dummies stand still (but I am yet to kill one).
  Mobs run to the slaughter
  Players run in irritating circles.
• Our guild’s top rogue has taught Dara everything she knows
  She always forgets poisons
  Stealth is for noob-rogues
  run away, run away
• I prefer the Pally to the Lock
  Well, when I can catch whatever it is I am trying to kill
  and in comparison to my Mage… well it looks good in level 60 PvP gear…

Some blog’s inspire you more than others, some inspire you to do something the author may not have intended.

After reading I Have Met the Asshat, and it is Dalra I said to myself

Dara, do LFR NOW.

Wasn’t hard, one button clicked and I was in a queue.

I do not enjoy the PVE side of World of Warcraft. I leveled my second toon to 85 purely on BG’s after level 34. (My second maxed toon, I tell you the party is still happening. Ok she is a priest too, but a Horde priest so that makes her different to Daraiste.) My knowledge of BG’s may just go beyond noob level now, you are welcome to join me in a BG to find out and after that I will lure you back with promises of improvement.

I very much doubt Bear’s post was intended to inspire someone who knew nothing of these raids to join, my logic was less than sound I admit.

Here it is:

If someone can play against the raids objectives for even 10 seconds before it was noticed then I might just get away with being there.

Please direct all “girl don’t you know how to use google, wowhead, blogs, your guild, your mates or your basic common sense and learn about such things before you do them” to Gnome, he likes reading.

Did I know what I was doing? Hell no!

I struggled to keep up with what Deadly Boss Mods was telling me on more than one occasion.

Did I cause the raid to wipe? Not on that day.

I am not sure I have caused any wipes at all (well since I started using LFR), once healing was mentioned but that was by the tank who the rest of the raid though was clueless. I got a whisper that first day that went along the lines of

I should mention I went in on full pvp gear.

I had so much fun, I still do LFR.

I have not given up on asking Gnome to join me, one day he may just say yes. I have some nice drops from doing them but I have something much better.

I have another part of WoW that I want to learn about, I go in with friends and get help and have a laugh. I have even recently started doing Arena’s. We won 6 before we lost on the first night. All of this because I saw the potential for getting away with something I would not have tried otherwise.

Don’t try this at home, read up , get help or worst case scenario, wing it and grow.

Oh Dear Bear, what 5 buttons should I press when I am in Feral forms.

But sometimes I find myself being a cat

or a Bear

and I really have no idea what I am doing.

I know what you are thinking, just stick with what you know, but the problem is, I don’t have that luxury. On the front lines, in the Battlegrounds and arenas, you have to use everything you have got, and a Druid has a hell of a lot.

It’s not like this is even a new character, I’ve had him for close to 6 years, but it has been a long time between swipes, so I just don’t know what I should do, or when, once I hit Cat or Bear form… forms I intend to be in for the shortest possible period of time, but I know that while I am in them, I need to do something useful.

When I’m a cat…

When I’m a cat, it’s because I want to move faster indoors (Dash & Stampeding Roar), I want to track those that are about to rip my innards out, I want to stealth and lay in wait for the silly flag capper. I have my keybindings all laid out so I can use the essential skills in any form, Cyclone, Typhoon, Faerie Fire etc. and then there is my empty cat bar.

I even have macros to enable me to drop into cat and perform some awesome action.

When I’m a Bear…

When I’m a Bear, one of two things has happened.

1. I pressed the Bear button instead of the Cat or Seal buttons
2. The shit just got real, the flag room just got filled with people that think the flag I am carrying belongs to them (and no… it’s MINE!).

It might be to drop a Stampeding roar, but it is more likely I will be doing this in Cat form.

It might be to Bash

But what I have discovered is that these abilities really expect you to do something to be worthwhile… the regen is only as good as the actions that follow… and I have no following moves and I am just as likely in my panic to switch back to Boomkin or Elf form so I can do something useful.

So what Dear Bear should I press when the shit has hit the fan and I want to be more useful than an Boomkin in a Bear skin?

How do I Feral without being (or truly wanting to be) Feral?

Yeah, this is kind of another post where I link back to an old post like I don’t care about the color of your clothes, shake my head lolwut heirlooms in your Battleground? and wonder when people will ever learn.

I had a few experiences over the weekend that have brought my philosophy of gear being less relevant than attitude to the fore.

Like Raiding in Blues

There was a time, BG – Before Gevlon, where the concept of raiding, seriously, in less than the top of the line purples was scoffed at. “We all knew”, despite protestations to the contrary that you had to have the best of the best to even be eligible to apply for a bench seat on a raiding guild, let alone raid.

You WILL leave your fun on hold until you have suffered on the sidelines for an appropriate amount of time. No you may not play with your friends until you match their ever escalating gear score!

40% down

Yet in BGs, people just shrug at AFKs and Bots in BGs… Yeah the report them AFK, but we have gotten to the point were we expect 10-20% of a PuG BG team to be AFK.

We were in a Twin Peaks recently where 4/10 “players” on our side were AFK or bots.

Yes we reported them.

Yes they were booted.

Yes they were replaced

But by then the game was lost.

Those Rogues

Don’t get me started again on those stealthy sneaky rogues from that recent Arathi Basin.

Prime ninja capping class, healer lockdown class, ninja AFK class.

Did they hurt us… I told you not to get me started.

That 80k Hunter

Over the weekend while playing with those Americans, we had one AB with an inappropriately geared Hunter.

Now admittedly 80k is pretty damn low compared to my 140k-ish cloth gear, but there was one fundamental and vitally important difference.

He was conscious and playing better than many in the BG. A living, breathing, observant undergeared player is a help in ways that a Bot or AFK can never be.

We were losing, there is no question about that, and losing brings on the rage.

Way too late in the game one player started calling for the Hunter’s head, or at the very least that we AFK the hunter out of the BG.

What was interesting was the vocal response from several players in the BG, including myself of course.

I started with

Better a 80k Hunter that is playing than an AFK or Bot!

The reager wasn’t satisfied with this, he would have preferred an AFK or Bot to the hunter… Not sure wtf the rager was on.

Another player then managed to beat me to my next point.

We had a lot more to worry about than an 80k hunter. We were being beaten miserably and we didn’t have any AFKs or Bots – we were 100% active players, but we were playing like bots.

We could have replaced that hunter with the most geared player in the whole game, and assuming they didn’t just AFK out in disgust, we wouldn’t have turned that game around.

My Melodicdream and Pugnacious Priest.

Pugnacious Priest joined my guildies for a few randoms last week. One of my guildies was on her Warlock, finally raised to 85 after years languishing at level 70. She only had her old level 70 pvp gear and the bits and pieces she had picked up over those last 15 levels.

1st words out of PP’s mouth were

Carried!

She was right, but also so wrong. Our fresh lock was played by our Raid & RBG Pally heals. Playing a toon she used to PvP with. Playing with people she had PvP’d with tons of times before.

She knows how to play, she knows the BGs and while the her gear would have some impact on her damage output and damage mitigation, she was well aware of this and making adjustments to her playstyle to ensure she was of value.

Carried

Gnomeadeaden, Getafixsnow (both mine), Rawwrbear, Naysa, Dariaste, 80% of the guild…

We have all been carried, we have taken the fastest, most efficient route to BG entry… we walked in.

When you have less gear, you have to play smarter, play to the objectives rather than the killing blows, you learn your classes strengths and weaknesses, your get out of jail free abilities.

You need to – its all you’ve got!

BigPvPButt

Bear joined us on the weekend with little more than his smarts.

His smarts amounted to wise non-pvp gear selection, non-pvp spec choice, asking questions, picking the right targets, knowing when to engage and when to run away.

He played beyond gear and spec, he played smart.

Theoretically anyone with an ounce of H.I. can do this.

Knowledge

You don’t have to ever enter a BG to be equipped with this weapon. I’ve always found it strange that people will spend a lot of time getting to know instances and raids, yet never think of researching BG prior to entry.

There may not be the quanity of guides about, but I know a few people that will give you pointers.

Knowledge & Attitude

Attitude, interesting that it follows up on knowledge, but there is more to it. If you know you aren’t up for soloing a node, how will you play?

Getafixsnow spent a lot of time stealthing and ninjaing, while running from fights that couldn’t be won. Yet he could and would off-heal or blow the odd horde off the LM.

Knowledge, Attitude & Spec

Having an appropriate PvP spec and keyboard layout will make the world of difference.

The unthinkable PvE talents, the skills that never made it of of the spell book. The CCs, the escapes.

It’s not about the gear as much as how you play the game.

Then of course, add gear to the mix and you can now stand toe to toe, fight on the road… or remember all those other things that got you the gear, the things that were much more valuable…

The knowledge, attitude and spec that make you much more valuable to a BG team.

Of course there are ways of getting some gear before you enter the BGs, and it never hurts to have something…

Crafted

You can make or buy the crafted gear. Some people will tell you not to even enter a BG until you have at least done this, but really, they can go screw themselves.  They have no idea of your personal circumstance.  Maybe this is your 1st toon, maybe you don’t know any of the required crafters (or they don’t have the patterns or mats if you do know some), maybe you have just scraped the last 15 copper together to buy your mount… I don’t know, and quick frankly it’s none of my business.

You could just be like me, some may call me a lazy arse, I prefer to think of myself as overwhelmingly ready to get into BGs… I’m not going to spend an hour trying to get the gear together that will be completely replace in a weeks time doing what I enjoy.

Crafted and JP trade for Honor

Of course, you may have piles of Justice Points just sitting about, well up to a max of 4k (unless the season has just turned and you have a few more).  That will get you a piece or two if you convert it and you could augment it with some crafted gear.

Or you could just play smart and earn your honor, nicking out every 3 odd BGs to pick up a new piece of gear (cause you are going to win OK!).

Have PvE gear, will Battle

You may well have a nice set of PvE gear, you may just want to fill 30 minute gaps in your day… don’t ask permission, just get in the BGs.. yes, yes you will die faster than the guy with resilience, but just quietly, he will probably die faster at your hands with your DPS-optimised gear focused on him

Just do it!

Just do it.. it really doesn’t matter what gear you have, there is always going to be someone telling you you have the wrong gear, the wrong enchant, the wrong spec, the wrong transmog… fuck’em!

Just don’t do it in Rated Battlegrounds!

Ohhh.. just don’t go into Rated Battlegrounds in your frilly dragonslayers… you make have thought those bosses hurt, wait until you have a psychopathic Rated BGer bearing down on your… you will run screaming like a Blood Elf.

Finally, don’t ask me why I am finishing on this one… I guess it is the trap of YouTube… and childhood… Mr. Squiggle and essential part of my childhood.

Maybe it’s just about perspective, not taking things at 1st glance… go on, turn the dynamic around, play your own game, have fun… because that’s what you pay for subs for, you aren’t spoiling the ragers fun… they are, they don’t appreciate you are 500% better than an AFK or Bot!

I’ve rolled a couple, I know a couple, but they just aren’t my thing.

But I’ve learned a few things from them.. some of them friendly, some of them not so friendly, all of them teachers in some way.

I think one of the most underused spells in a Priest’s arsenal is Mind Control, and I don’t mean the Beware Mind Control in the wrong hands kind of mind control, but it will still make you do silly things.

Here are some examples…

Alterac Valley & Isle of Conquest

Wipe inducing

I enjoy frustrating the Horde when they are preparing to engage Van, but funnily enough it’s not easy as a Mage to get Van to come to my rescue. I have only one or two options.. taunt a Hordie far enough in the room for Van to stop cleaning his nails, or pop Mirror Images… For some reason, while the Images inherit my aggro, Van inherits theirs and he will charge to attack their enemies. I guess if I had a DK, I could pull them one by one to have a chat with Van, but it’s priests that have the real power to absolve the sins (through death) of the Horde.

Simply, a Priest mind controls the enemy into the bosses room, until they are close enough to clean Van’s nails for him. At which point the Priest releases the mind control (maybe even picking up a new target), leaving Van to wonder where this Hordie came from… Not for long though, I know where Van is sending that Hordie, straight to the graveyard! Van rarely settles for one, so there is a good chance that the enemy are going to scatter fast… if the Priest can keep that cycle up, it is hard for the average pug AV group to recover.

Room Clearing

This can be used in reverse of course.

Do you have a painful Mage in protecting their boss? Do they feel safe and secure in the arms of their orverlords?

Maybe it’s time for your Priest to spread rumors about their loyalty… or maybe, just turn them for a second using Mind Control. From past experience (cough), they will get one-shot by their guardians.

One warning on this… your leaders will then turn their attention to those waiting in the foyer, so run fast, wait for them to reset, then continue to clear the room of the potential wipe inducers.

See, no need to sit on noob hill wondering how to clear the room of defenders… let Van or Drek do it for you!

Eye of the Storm

I’m sure by now we have all experienced that sinking feeling when we see a Elemental Shaman or Boomkin on our node in EotS. Worse, we have probably experienced that falling feeling.

Well, they don’t have a monopoly of Troll tossing, the difference is Priest will make them want to go over the edge… at least initially.

Remember, every opponent over the edge is:

1. One less to count for turning the base in your favor
2. One less person you have to heal or DPS through
3. If thrown off the edge, one less person that wants to rez and rejoin combat.

Everyone expects to be thrown off a node by a Shaman or Boomkin… no one expects the Priestly walk of shame!

Twin Peaks

I was racing to intercept the Horde Flag Carrier in TP the other day, when I saw a marvelous thing.

The Flag carrier ran and jumped off the edge of the map at the waterfall.

EFC down, no way his team mates can pick up the flag without suffering the same fate.

As the EFC was at full health when he leaped to his death, his team mates hadn’t considered the need to have someone else in our flag room.

It was magic, and the Priest and his companions knew it… I know it now!

Arathi Basin – Achievement Hunter

Of course, Arathi Basin Lumber Mill.. who hasn’t been walked over the edge there? Why not?

I must admit I am always listening out for “Mind Control”, so I know to counterspell the priest and save my guildy, or ready with a trinket, Ice Block and as a last resort Slow Fall when I am targeted.

Still, I bet you never thought of it as a route to Achievements.

There was this one night in AB where a Priest was achievement hunting.

…They were guarding LM solo…

…They would cap the flag…

…Then run to the back of LM to hide…

…I rode up, could see no enemy, capped the flag back…

…Mind controlled off the cliff…

…The Priest came to the flag rescue…

…Run to the back and hide…

…I rode up, could see no enemy, capped the flag back…

…Mind controlled off the cliff…

…The Priest came to the flag rescue…

…Run to the back and hide…

…I rode up, could see no enemy, capped the flag back…

…Mind controlled off the cliff…

…The Priest came to the flag rescue…

…Run to the back and hide…

A mate, Daror, came to join me in taking down the Priest…

…Mind controlled off the cliff…

Last thing I heard over skype was…

Fucking priest got me too!

We got the priest next time, but by then we were finally onto their plan, we knew we needed two of us, a couple of interrupts from different sources, and the firepower to take them down before they got a grip on our minds.

Remember your Hit!

So my dear Priestly readers, remember your 4% hit to get spells off on level 85′s…. Yes, even you healer types, you need the hit, it’s not hard to come by and with it you will have lots of less interrupted fun.

Remember also that this is not for the use of the Horde… no, no, no.. Alliance only kk?

I Fear this is slightly off topic…

A Priest trick in the Arena is as good in the BGs.

Sometimes you need to CC a healer to get a kill on a DPS (or another heals for that matter).

Usually at the time this is occurring, your DPS are in full burst and can’t (or wont) take the time to lay down a bit of CC on the healer.

Hopefully at this point in time your enemy DPS are a little tied up trying to survive, so you as the Priest (and probably healer) will have a little idle time on your hands… so put it to good use.

Fear the enemy Heals… if they can’t heal at the important moments in the fight, then the DPS will die… miserably… and you can take the credit for their demise.

Who ever said Priests had to be nice all the time…?
