ArcGIS Mobile Build 2550 Released!

The fourth in our series of ArcGIS Mobile 10.0 updates, the Mobile Team is proud to announce the release of build 2550. Just like 2525 and all previous updates, installing build 2550 does not require that you uninstall a previous version - this install will simply update your current install of ArcGIS Mobile.

You can download build 2550 now from the Esri Customer Care Portal. Look for "ArcGIS Mobile 10 (Build 2550)".

The following is a list of the quality updates added in build 2550:

NIM076416 - When using the Sign In capability inside of the Windows Mobile application you can now search for a user by id. Given a long list of users to choose from, the search capability is a quick way to access your account by name.

NIM073927 - Using the Windows Tablet application, the Identify Features tool will now honor layer visibility settings and only return features that are visible on the map.

NIM071320 - The ArcGIS Mobile application now fully supports the download of a mobile project within a secured environment.

NIM069617 - Several users reported problems collecting data using the embedded GPS receiver within the Panasonic Toughbook CF-19. We have identified and resolved those issues and now GPS data collection using the embedded GPS within Panasonic Toughbook CF-19s are fully supported.

NIM073981 - The ArcGIS Mobile field applications support scale dependency settings from ArcMap. Now within the Layer List, map layers that are not visible at the current scale will appear using gray text so that you can differentiate them from other layers within the map.

NIM074815 - When creating a mobile project you can mark map layers as "hidden". When doing so, these map layers will no longer appear inside of the layer visibility list inside of the Windows Mobile application.

NIM071445 - We have improved the usability of the "Browse for Photo" feature within the Windows Tablet application. It will now remember previous folder settings.

NIM073617 - The Windows Tablet application now supports connecting to the GPS receiver within an Algiz 7 tablet.

NIM065671 - ArcView is a supported license level for using ArcGIS Mobile with ArcGIS Desktop. You do not need to use ArcGIS Server. In fact you can use ArcView with a file geodatabase and the geoprocessing tools will fully support your disconnected workflows. Our documentation for these tools reflects this capability now.

NIM067039 - When displaying your map content using the Mobile Project Center application, we have improved upon how we display Annotation from a geodatabase annotation feature class.

NIM071732 - Prior to the release of build 2550, if you opened a mobile project that included sign in capabilities but did not yet have project data deployed to the device the Windows Mobile application would prompt you to choose a user but would not ask if you would like to download data from the server. This issue has been resolved.

Developer Tips for Getting Started with ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android

With ArcGIS for Android now available, this article discusses what steps are needed to set up your Android development environment to work with Runtime. To follow along, you will need an Android 2.2+ powered device to test your applications.

Setting up your development environment

1. Install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Java Development Kit (JDK). I used Java 6. Once complete, it’s sometimes helpful to have your Java installation tied into your system’s environment variable PATH, but this is completely optional.

2. Download and unzip Eclipse 3.5, Eclipse 3.6 or higher. The Eclipse Classic version is recommended, but Eclipse IDE for Java Developers and Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers will also work. Please note that Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) is no longer supported with the latest version of ADT (v16). For updated system requirements, please visit http://developer.android.com/sdk/requirements.html

3. Open the eclipse.ini file and edit it to increase the amount of heap space that is available to Eclipse. The eclipse.ini file is found in the same location as the Eclipse executable. This text file contains an entry -Xmx256m usually. Increasing this to 512 should be sufficient for Eclipse.

4. Install the Android SDK and save the location of the SDK directory on your system as you will refer to the SDK directory later. You can use either of zip or exe packages but I found setting up SDK with zip easier and ‘error-free’.

5. Use the SDK Manager to install the Android SDK. Multiple Android SDKs can live on the same machine. Esri currently requires 2.2 as the minimum SDK but it does supports Android 2.x and 3.x (and 4.0 looks like it will be fine too but is currently not fully tested). Make sure you have at least Android SDK 2.2 installed:

6. Install the Android Development Tools (ADT) plug-in for Eclipse. This is a must before configuring ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android.

7. And don’t forget to configure the ADT Plugin.

8. Install the ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android

Download the SDK from here.

Now all we need to do is install the ArcGIS plug-ins into Eclipse by creating local update site direct from the zip (full instructions here):

Click ‘Help > Install New Software’
Click the ‘Add’ button. This opens the Add Repository dialog. Click the ‘Archive’ button to browse to the location of the downloaded zip.
Click ‘OK’ to add the repository to your list of Available Software Sites
Select your local repository from the ‘Work with:’ selection box
Select ‘ArcGIS for Android’ Group item to install both the core plugin and samples and doc plugin. Optionally, you can individually select the ‘ArcGIS for Android Core’ plugin or ‘ArcGIS for Android Doc and Samples’ plugin categories individually.

Esri GPS Base Station "gisa"

Esri has installed a permanent building mounted Global Positioning System/Global Navigation Satellite System (GPS/GNSS) base station in Redlands, California named "gisa". GISA operates a Trimble NetR9, dual-frequency GPS/GNSS receiver with Zephyr Geodetic Model 2 antenna. The base station meets National Geodetic Survey Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) guidelines and is in the process of being incorporated into their national CORS network.

In the context of land surveying, a base station is a permanently installed GPS/GNSS receiver at an accurately-known fixed location which is used to derive correction information for nearby portable GNSS receivers. This correction data allows certain environmental and system effects to be corrected out of the position data obtained by the mobile stations. This greatly improves the location accuracy over results obtained using uncorrected GNSS data. Surveyors, GIS users, engineers, scientists, and the public at large that collect GNSS data can use base station correction data to improve the precision of their positions.

The Esri GNSS Base Station continuously collects GPS/GNSS signals and makes them publically available over the internet. As the use of GNSS continues to grow exponentially, the demand for more precise positioning data also increases. The transportation, surveying, engineering, and environmental communities are employing high-accuracy GNSS field units capable of receiving precise GNSS signals offering positional accuracies of one inch or better. The Esri base station will support these and many other natural resource-level mapping applications requiring 1 to 3 foot accuracy.

Land based navigation uses GNSS data to enhance e-911 and other emergency vehicle dispatch and least-time routing. On the scientific front, GNSS data allows geologists and geophysicists to monitor tectonic plate motion with very high accuracy. These data now contribute significantly to our understanding of the processes causing earthquakes and volcanoes and early warning of such natural hazards for citizens. GNSS data are now routinely used in weather forecasting to estimate the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. The Esri base station will contribute valuable GNSS data to all these activities, and, as new uses of these data are discovered, to those as well.

GISA continuously collects GPS/GNSS signals and stores them in data files on a secure Esri server accessible to the public via the Esri website http://gnss.esri.com. GISA also broadcasts real-time GPS/GNSS data over the internet in industry standard Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services (RTCM) formats. Surveyors, GIS users, engineers, scientists, and the public at large that collect GNSS data can combine their data with gisa base station data to improve the precision of their positions.

Esri would like to acknowledge Trimble Navigation for contributing all the GPS/GNSS equipment; the City of Redlands for giving us access to the Redlands Municipal Airport for testing gisa and to Allen Instruments and Supplies of Anaheim, CA for performing a terrestrial laser scan of the gisa site.

ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android v1.0.1 Released!

The Mobile Team is pleased to announce that v1.0.1 of the ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android has been released. After months of hard work, we have enhanced the beta release to include some really cool performance and functionality improvements. To access the download, please visit the Android Resource Center.

The SDK allows you to add the power of the ArcGIS system to your Android apps which can run on phones and tablets with the Android OS v2.2 and above. This includes the ability to connect to ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server. You can also add cached base maps which are stored locally on your device! With this SDK you can:

Add maps from ArcGIS Online or create your own maps in code
Add base maps which are stored locally on the device to your maps
Use a rich set of tasks which leverage the power of ArcGIS to analyze your maps and provide information to your users
Add functions to let users to edit data whilst out in the field
Work with your devices GPS
Identify features in the map and view the rich pop ups which you can author in ArcGIS online
An integrated Eclipse plugin to make it easy to add ArcGIS to your Android projects
Add graphics on top of the map
Perform advanced geometric operations locally

The Beta release has been much improved upon based on all of your feedback. Some of the highlights of new features in this release are:

ArcGIS for Android v1.0.1 released!

ArcGIS for Android application update v1.0.1 is now available from the Android market!

The Mobile team has released an update to the ArcGIS for Android application and you can download it from the Google market.

This update includes support for devices which have ARMv6 processors running Android OS v2.2 and above. This has been our biggest request and opens up the application to many more devices which we know you have out there in the wild. However, we simply can’t test it on every Android device, so please let us know if you have problems.

We have also added support for moving the app to the SD Card, our second biggest request!

Additional highlights of this update are:

Add photo button option for when you are adding attachments to features
Improving support for displaying text in multiple languages
Improved support for ArcGIS online maps and ArcGIS Server 9.3.1
Bug fixes to avoid errors, freezes and crashes that were reported by you via the Android Market.
Improved tablet support

ArcGIS API for iOS v2.1 now available

We are happy to announce that v2.1 of ArcGIS API for iOS (henceforth referred to as ArcGIS Runtime SDK for iOS) is now available.

This release builds on the support for iOS 5 provided by v2.0.1 and includes additional functionality such as -

Ability to view map content using ArcGIS 10.1 tile packages (*.tpk files) even when the device is offline.
New GPS auto panning modes for vehicle navigation and compass navigation
Flexible callout positioning
Ability to rotate the map

ArcGIS API for iOS Update 2.0.1 now available

We are sure that most of you are eager to start developing with Apple's iOS 5 SDK. We are too. Some of you have already started using the Beta versions of iOS 5 SDK and have experienced problems in using it with ArcGIS API for iOS.

Based on your feedback, and to give you sufficient time to ready your applications in anticipation of supporting iOS 5, we have released update 2.0.1 to specifically resolve the issues you reported with iOS 5. You can download the update here.

Functionally, 2.0.1 is exactly the same as 2.0. The API remains unchanged too. If you have already migrated your applications to use 2.0 , migrating to 2.0.1 is as simple as uninstalling the old API package, installing the new one, and rebuilding your application.

At the time of releasing this update, Beta 7 was the most recent iOS 5 version available and used in our testing. Note that iOS 5 SDK is still only in Beta and it is possible that future versions could reveal new problems. We will strive to address those issues, should they come up, in a timely manner, however, bear in mind that we cannot truly claim to support iOS 5 until its final version is released.

So, with that said, download the update and start running your applications with iOS 5. And continue to send us your feedback, we look forward to hearing from you.

ArcGIS Mobile Build 2525 Released!

Building upon the success of the past 2 updates to ArcGIS Mobile 10.0, the Mobile Team is proud to announce the release of build 2525. As with the previous updates, installing build 2525 does not require that you uninstall a previous version - this install will simply update your current install of ArcGIS Mobile.

You can download build 2525 now from the Esri Customer Care Portal. Look for "ArcGIS Mobile 10 (Build 2525)".

The following is a list of the quality updates that were resolved in build 2525:

NIM067481 - when minimizing the ArcGIS Mobile for Windows Tablet application with local set to a bi-directional language (ex. Arabic) text would flip direction.
NIM067269 - when collecting geometry by tapping on the map conditions may occur where vertices failed to snap when inside their tolerance value.
NIM068816 - unable to initialize the Create Mobile Map Geoprocessing Tool with an Engine license.
NIM070276 - using the Create Mobile Map Geoprocessing Tool may fail with the error "operation is not valid due to the current state of the object".
NIM065917 - Search Task returns too many results when searched item is symbolized using more than one field.
NIM070158 - the ArcGIS Mobile application may fail when clicking the zoom window during a page transition.
NIM068749 - data logging and synchronization of logs at a high frequency rate may cause a native exception within the ArcGIS Mobile application.
NIM070277 - the ArcGIS Mobile project file (.amp) may end up corrupted if logging out of Windows before shutting down the ArcGIS Mobile for Windows application.
NIM067838 - when displaying the alias for a field, the alias name will truncate with "...". This fix displays the entire alias name using word wrap.
NIM059970 - opening a mobile project that includes field crew logging capabilities will not prompt you to download data.

ArcGIS Application for iOS v2.0 Now Available!

Check for updates on your iPhone or iPad because the ArcGIS application v2.0 is now available for download! This is a significant release for the ArcGIS application.

Key features of the 2.0 release include:

Popups

The ArcGIS application now fully supports layer popups that you configure using ArcGIS Online. By configuring popups you can define a unique presentation for feature content. Learn the basics of how to configure popups from this ArcGIS Online blog article.

Map Notes and Files

Using ArcGIS Explorer Online or the Javascript Web Map Viewer you can sketch and annotate maps. Those sketches are called Map Notes. With the recent update to ArcGIS Online, spreadsheets (.CSV), text files (.txt), shapefiles (.shp), and GPX files (.gpx) can also be imported into your map as map notes. These map notes are fully supported within the ArcGIS application.

Sharing Maps

In previous releases you could share maps with others via email. We have expanded the capability to share maps to include SMS and social media (facebook, twitter).

Productivity Tools

The ArcGIS application includes several productivity tools inside of the 2.0 release:

A dynamic legend that displays only the layers visible at the scale of your map
You can now switch base map layers inside of the application
Navigate to map bookmarks or to bookmarks within the Contacts application of your iOS device. Also you can create new bookmarks from a tap on the map, your current location, or a GIS feature.

New User Experience

The User Interface of the iOS application has changed. We have removed the tab bar across the bottom of the application to maximize the use of the map and introduced a toolbar at the top of the application to highlight the most frequently used map tools. Significant work was put into designing a native iPad experience. Page transitions give way to forms that pop on top of the map canvas when needed. A slide out control displays the legend alongside the map.

Dateline

The ArcGIS application now support both pan and sketching across the date line.

ArcGIS Portal Integration

Earlier this year, Esri introduced a new product called ArcGIS Portal. In a nutshell, an ArcGIS Portal brings the capabilities of ArcGIS Online to your organization. You can implement an ArcGIS Portal completely behind your firewall. Using the Settings Application you will find the ability to swivel from ArcGIS Online to your own ArcGIS Portal. Please see your Esri representative for details regarding ArcGIS Portal.

Now available in 10 languages!

The ArcGIS application is now available in 10 different languages! English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Russian.

GeoCollector for ArcGIS Mobile

The options for high accuracy data collection with ArcGIS Mobile just keep getting better!

Esri's Hardware Solutions group is offering a new packaged solution for U.S. customers called GeoCollector for ArcGIS Mobile. GeoCollector for ArcGIS Mobile bundles together ArcGIS Mobile software with Trimble GeoExplorer 6000 series handhelds devices.

You can now couple the COTS ArcGIS Mobile application with the GeoCollector XH receiver, leverage your local VRS network and map infrastructure to 10-centimeter accuracy in real time! Or using a custom solution developed with the ArcGIS Mobile SDK and the Trimble Mobile GIS Developer Community resources you can deploy applications that enable the post-processing of GPS positions when VRS is not available and still meet your accuracy requirements.

The warranty and support for GeoCollector is completely managed by Esri. Esri technical support staff will take the lead for all GeoCollector questions and issues. Details on the GeoCollector for ArcGIS Mobile packaged solution can be found here.

ArcGIS Mobile Build 2500 Released!

The Mobile Team has released another update to ArcGIS Mobile 10.0 called "Build 2500". It has a number of stability improvements and enhancements across the client applications, SDK and the Geoprocessing Tools. You can download build 2500 now from the Esri Customer Care Portal. Look for "ArcGIS Mobile 10 (Build 2500)".

This update includes resolution on 14 Nimbus incidents:

NIM065266 - within both the ArcGIS Mobile applications and SDK the auto-detect feature will now search for GPS devices transmitting at a baud rate higher than 9600.
NIM065267 - within both the ArcGIS Mobile applications and SDK, we now support GNSS sentences from other systems (GLONASS). This improves upon the fix time and precision of GPS positions received within ArcGIS Mobile.
NIM064957 - translation of the ArcGIS Mobile applications to certain languages was not supported due to a dependency on MUI. This dependency has been removed.
NIM064309 - when synchronizing edits with large datasets, we have dramatically improved synchronization performance (minutes to seconds).
NIM062051 - it is now possible to create a python script to schedule the creation and synchronization of mobile caches without the need to run that script using ArcCatalog or ArcMap.
NIM065514 - when creating a mobile project that contained both a tile cache and mobile service or mobile cache, often the Mobile Project Center application would crash. This would occur if the full extent of the tile cache was quite large and the extent of the mobile service or mobile cache was quite small.
NIM064851 - the Create Mobile Map Geoprocessing Tool would fail to succeed when creating mobile caches for large numbers of features.
NIM060664 - the Mobile Geoprocessing Tools are now supported on 64-bit operating systems.
NIM066717 - composing a project on Windows XP or Windows Vista would fail when adding certain ArcGIS Server Tile Caches as base map layers.
NIM066723 - we have improved security when logging into ArcGIS Online to discover the list of mobile projects inside of your account, the ArcGIS Mobile applications were using HTTP instead of HTTPS when generating a token. They are now using HTTPS exclusively.
NIM066500 - opening a project with the field crew logging/sign in capabilities presents an option to create a New User. Prior to this fix it was possible to create more than one user with the same name. With this fix, you will not be allowed to create more than one user with the same name.
NIM066501 - using the field crew logging capability you are asked to "Sign In". By default, the highlighted user is "New User". If you simply tapped on "New User" it would create a user with the name "New User" automatically. Tapping ok will now take you directly to the New User sign up page.
NIM066324 - the list of user names to "Sign In" as when using the Sign In capability listed each user based upon their Object ID. It now sorts the list of users alphabetically.
NIM065186 - in certain circumstances, when synchronization with the server fails (lost connection with the server for example) duplicate records may appear inside of the client side mobile cache.

The Mobile team is committed to improving the quality and capabilities of ArcGIS Mobile 10.0 technology as well as building ArcGIS Mobile 10.1. Each new 10.0 release is an update to your existing install - you do not need to uninstall the previous install before updating.

Using Esri's Online Help Systems on your iPhone or iPad

We get a lot of feedback from our user community wanting to learn more about ArcGIS from the help systems available on resources.arcgis.com using Safari on their iPad's and iPhones.

Here are a couple of important tips that will make your experience even better:

1. How to scroll pages in the Help System

When you browse to the help systems we quite often are asked the following - "How do you scroll the page?". "I can pinch to zoom in and out but when I swipe my finger up and down it doesn't scroll?". Why are the help systems not iPad friendly??

Actually they are. You simply need to learn a new touch gesture! It is a "two finger swipe". Simply place 2 fingers on top of the frame you wish to scroll and swipe up/down. This will let you scroll a page either on your iPhone or iPad using the Safari browser.

2. Add A Help System To Your Home Screen

You can add the location of your favorite help system to your home screen so you don't have to browse to it using Safari. Simply tap on the Action button as shown below and tap "Add to Home Screen". This will create an icon on the home screen of your device that acts as a shortcut to the Help System you want to read about.
