The Spiral Journey-Once More Around

Just before the arrival of 2012 I moved into a sweet little house in Sedona. It was the completion of a cycle that had begun more than a year before, when I had moved out of my first home in Sedona. It was an unbelievable journey that included a bout with breast cancer, camping out with friends in guest rooms and on sofas—even living in a camping trailer for a while.

This little adventure took me from the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, to the beaches of Kauai and included completing the training to become an ordained Shamanic Minister, certified Shamanic Breathwork Facilitator, earning an MA in Shamanic Intuitional Practices and a PhD in Shamanic Psychospiritual Studies. It also took me to depths and heights of myself I didn't know existed.

Finally I ended up where I began—back in my beloved red rocks of Sedona. Where I began, but not—meaning I’m not the same. Life is a spiral, not a straight line. So, as I took that year-plus turn around this spiral of life, I arrived back at the same spot, but from a higher perspective, wiser yet humbler, stripped of much I thought was essential, freer, more open, lighter, and a lot more courageous.

I’m far from the only one experiencing bizarre life rearrangements. However, I will say, that as a good Scorpio and 4 on the Enneagram, I’m pretty much wired to take things to extremes and be a bit of a drama queen.

But seriously, at every turn I see and hear about lives in upheaval. Aspects of life we have so taken for granted are shifting, being lost, shaken up, disappearing. We are being challenged to our very cores to step into these upheavals, to let go of so much that is familiar, and recognize and trust that in the letting go, we are being ushered into places of greater freedom and limitlessness. All those parts of our lives we thought we couldn’t live without—when we dare to let go, we find we can expand into something more—more free, more flexible, more courageous.

It’s a lot like the story of Moses and the children of Israel when they were being prompted (nudged by the hand of God) by decidedly uncomfortable circumstances in Egypt to launch out into the unknown of a “promised land.” We so often hold on to situations, circumstances and relationships that are less than ideal, but are comfortable because of their familiarity, when our souls have something more for us.

I’m learning a lot about the brain these days, and there is a definite physiological component to staying with the familiar, even when it is uncomfortable. We become addicted to the familiar, to the particular cocktail of neurotransmitters that releases in our brains around patterns of behavior, circumstances and relationships, even when those patterns no longer serve our highest good, our growth and evolution.

So all of that—both the spiritual and the scientific- is what I fall back on when my own circumstances are shaken, when life takes a turn that is decidedly not on my wish list. I’m grateful for the teachers who have shown me the tools that allow me to see the good, to breathe, to surrender and to trust. And I can now say I am grateful for the circumstances that have allowed me to move from an intellectual understanding to a gut level, life on the line, experiential knowing.

One such teacher phoned me recently, inquiring about my journey of healing breast cancer. The dreaded C-word had struck in her close family, and she needed to know what I did, how I handled it, the healers I’d worked with and, how I was now—was it all still working for me. She is someone whose wisdom, training and teaching have inspired and informed me personally, and in my own writing and teaching. In fact, it was much of her teaching that enabled me to handle the cancer the way I did. So no matter who we are, how much we know, we are all taking our turn in going deeper into release, trust, surrender and growth. I was grateful that my experience could serve.

There is another Old Testament story I remember and refer to a lot: during one of the battles, Moses was instructed by the Lord that the Israelites would prevail so long as he held his staff up over his head. Of course, Moses' arms grew weary, and each time he wavered and his arms started to droop, the battle would swing toward the enemy. The story is that his sister Miriam and brother Aaron stood on either side of him, and helped him hold up his arms.

They could not take over his job for him; he had to do his work. But they could stand with him and support him as he did what he was called to do.

So it is with us. As our family members and friends step into their own unique life experiences of learning, surrender, growth and transformation, we stand with them, lending strength and compassion as they in turn do their divine work.

One more OT reference comes to mind. When I began my own spiritual journey, I took with me a verse from Jeremiah: I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans for good and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope. I’ve held on to that. So far, so good. As I sit typing this in my lovely office, surrounded once again by beloved belongings, in the cozy tranquility of my new home, healthy, happy, freer and oh so grateful, all I can say is Thank You—to the Divine, and to all who stood with me as I did the work of this last year and made one more turn around the spiral of life.

I could not conjure up the will this year to write a Holiday blog about the appearance of the light of Christ consciousness in the midst of the “bleak midwinter”. Not this year, sitting outside of Starbucks in the bright 70º sunshine of Camp Verde, Arizona. Instead, let me address the importance of steeling ourselves for the coming seismic shifts of the coming year.

Let me be clear. This is a pep-talk to myself because I am not clear; I am not fully awake at every moment of every day. But at the onset of a New Year YOU NEED A PEP-TALK and SO DO I!

We have officially run out of time. In fact, time does not exist for us anymore. We have entered a new vibration where we stand outside of time. This is the new earth, and we have to stop talking about its emergence, and start creating our new life here.

I have also run out of patience with folks who want to talk about sports or politics or popular culture. I’m not interested in hearing about how your neighbor or your family has slighted you or let you down. I’m not interested in hearing about the ways you limit yourself with your thoughts. Tell me instead about the ways you have used your mindfulness to liberate you from old patterns and tired traditions.

Tell me how you have stepped out of the boxes that contain you. Tell me how you plotted after you saw your comfortable surroundings where nothing but a gilded cage – a beautiful prison with over-stuffed couches and wide-screen TV’s. Tell me how you jumped from your box, or if you slithered out or skipped or crawled.

Do tell me that you set the box on fire; soaked it with kerosene and set the match with ritual and ceremony.

Why do we hold onto things that no longer serve us? Why do we stay in jobs that demean us? Why do we maintain marriages and relationships that diminish our life-force? Why do we keep trying to fix the broken systems with broken tools?

Do you really think we should prop up our economic and societal structures at any cost? Is there an institution that is “too big to fail”, or should we have a little death to make room for a rebirth? Are you satisfied with choosing between “evils” when you go to the polls? What would happen if you demanded more and stopped settling for less?

In Chinese astrology, this is the year of the Dragon and we need to embrace this archetype with fervor and adoration! The Dragon represents the power to Create as well as to Destroy. These are twin attributes like death and rebirth.

We are stepping into our highest imagining. We welcome all the forces of change and we hold tight to and bring new meaning to the idea of riding the dragon. The dragon represents destruction of the old paradigm and the bold and formidable construction of the New Earth.

We have to deconstruct everything that has worked through its last bit of usefulness – and we will construct new structures, and new relationships, and new thoughts, and patterns, and institutions that honor us and serve us.

We now surround ourselves with constructs that stem from the recognition of our profound connection with the physical universe as well as our connection with the divine. We ride the Dragon and we are the Dragon.

New Review of Visionary Shamanism by Bonnie Cehovet

Here is a recent review of Visionary Shamanism, posted recently by Bonnie Cehovet

“Visionary Shamanism” presents an incredibly incisive look at where we are now, and how we need to get where we are going. A little background – Linda Star Wolf is, amongst other things, the creator of the Shamanic Breathwork process, and a spiritual granddaughter of Seneca Wolf Clan Grandmother Twylah Nitsch. She first came to my attention through the work that she did with Nicki Scully (Anubis Oracle Cards, Shamanic Mysteries of Egypt).

The accelerated pace of spiritual growth on this planet has reached a point where old social/spiritual structures are breaking down, and new “leadership”, or, more correctly, “stewardship” is needed. Star Wolf places great emphasis on the thought that this is the time when we are all being asked to awaken the shaman within for the purpose of reaching our full potential as individuals. In this book, Star Wolf and Dillon talk about healing the past, learning from the future, and awakening what they call the “imaginal cells” within each of us.

Learning from the future was a concept that caught my attention immediately. By living in the present we consciously create our future, yes, but why not access the future in order to learn from it. Imaginal cells are another interesting concept – they represent energies in our auric field of what has already happened, and what will happen. They are stored in the blueprint of the invisible world – essentially, a hologram of who our highest, best self is meant to be. By opening a channel to these cells we get a glimpse of the best that we can be. We also have the opportunity to prepare ourselves for the new world to come.

In her foreword, Barbara Hand Clow starts out by saying: “Visionary Shamanism is a clear and simple book about a very complex and thought-provoking idea – we must download information from the future to be totally present and fully embodied now.” She notes the work that both she and Star Wold have done with their own past lives to come to a better understanding of the work that they were meant to do. She then goes on to comment on accessing information from the future, noting that there are many individuals that will be resistant to this concept, but that she feels that the time is right to explore this possibility. By accessing our future selves, we open up the option of choosing the future that we wish to have. The foreword ends with an interesting thought – “Use this book to tune into the imaginal cells within yourself, because they are the deepest wisdom in the core of your soul, which vibrates eternally in the very center of your heart.”

Star Wolf graces this book with a great deal of background on her journey of walking between the worlds. Through story and anecdote, we see her family background, and the important part that her grandmother played in her spiritual development. She places emphasis on each of us being co-creators of our life with God. Star Wolf Talks about her studies with Grandmother Twyla, and her unique experience when she crossed over.

Star Wolf talks about the shamanic path of transformation, and how to access our imaginal cells – in our auric field that contains information about both past and future experiences. By accessing our future experiences, we gift ourselves with the choice of the future that we really want. She notes that as multidimensional beings, we have the ability to walk between the worlds, and to be aware of existing in many worlds at once. We have the ability to move our consciousness to integrate all of our worlds.

Star Wolf talks about shape-shifting our Family Tree into the Cosmic Tree of Life. Our Family Tree is our family of origin, and all of the issues that surrounds it. In releasing these issues, we shift to the more universal Tree of Life, which symbolizes humanity’s place in the universe. There is a great emphasis places on the Neteru, or Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. This is information that has been channeled through Star Wolf, largely on her journey’s to Egypt with Nicki Scully.
Included with this book is a CD entitled “Musical Journey”, by Matt Venuti. It is focused on the chakras, and acts to support reaching a higher level of consciousness.

The material in this book is presented through story and anecdote. It flows easily, and can be used by individuals of any religious or cultural background, and all levels of shamanic experience. I find it to be a very accessible tool of personal empowerment.

The Feminine and the Masculine

The feminine principle is the Infinite, Eternal Energy.
The masculine principle is the Mind - Thinking.
When the thought impregnates the energy, a child or reality is created.
Energy becomes what it thinks about.
The feminine is energy, infinite being, spirit, substance, or life source. The masculine is the rational faculty, thoughts, ideas, or inspirations.

The masculine moves the feminine into action, but the feminine supplies the power. The feminine is the passive power, the masculine is the active power. They work together and support each other. Both men and women have both of these principles inside of them. We each have to learn an appropriate balance.

The divine feminine is the space between our thoughts. It is this being that is sourcing and doing the thinking. But the energy doesn't do anything, until thought moves it. Energy is evenly distributed throughout time and space. Thought gives it shape and action. And it is this energy that gives substance to the reality created by thought. However, this Space between our thoughts is not nothing, It is the Presence, it is feeling Itself, the Source of all feelings. When our pure feeling is not colored by thoughts, it is all the Divine feelings of bliss, wisdom, love, peace, beauty, and all the goodness.

The basic function of the mind is to create, maintain, manage, and destroy what it has created, when the creation becomes obsolete or undesirable. The mind can make mistakes, the energy cannot. The energy is naked power, it always says yes. It always supplies the substance for whatever thoughts are chosen to be materialized. The mind is the most dangerous thing in the universe.

The universe is often thought of as the Divine Mother in action. It is the Feminine which maintains the reality of materialized form when the mind forgets about it. The name of this aspect of the mother is Maha Maya. All created reality can be uncreated. Theoretically, it is temporary. However, its duration is not necessarily determined by its level of intelligence. Stones for example, may endure longer than humans. Or we may ask, do stones have more intelligence than some people? Maha Maya is also refered to as the Divine Mother. Her Shakti supports the universe. Therefore, the Feminine is the Source and the Form. The masculine is only the mind- the in between. But this mediator directs the show, the mind decides what is to be created and destroyed.

Repetition and conscious reasoning is the creative process. Each repetition gathers more and more energy and each time it is thought, more thoughts are added to it until a structure of thought and energy is strong enough to materialize into form that stays there when we are no longer thinking about it. This is the nature of the creative process. These forms that energy created out of itself, infinite eternal energy, have a tendency to last forever until they are unthought. This is called karma, cause and effect. This is the ultimate science. And it appears that some created things can disappear through neglect. This may mean if we can hang out in the Space between our thoughts long enough, maybe all our problems might disappear. However, multiple deaths don't seem to be enough for our soul to lose its karma. We have to be conscious and responsible for what we have created. Obviously, it is best to stay conscious of what we are thinking all the time and thus keep life simple.

This is the victory and the problem of the soul. We tend to be stuck with our thoughts until we erase them or transform them. We have to live with our creations until we uncreate them. Each thought can create only in relation to every other thought that we have. Thoughts may conflict or neutralize each other until we harmonize and integrate all of our thinking. Then our mind and energy can work together in full power. Sometimes called concentration.
This is the job of meditation. We have to carefully evaluate and judge the value of each thought as it passes through our consciousness. We have to evaluate and choose. We have to be careful what we create. When we keep our thoughts in harmony with our divine nature - truth, love, simplicity, beauty, wisdom, joy, peace, harmony, creativity, self-control, patience, etc, sooner or later we will be the total masters of our personal reality. And the quality of life we have will be worth living forever.

The divine feminine and physical immortality.
Single women live longer than married women. Married men live longer than single men. This is just one of the practical results of the value of the divine feminine. But this simple statistic reveals something else. Conscious immortality comes from the purification of the mind. Menstruation in women is the basic purification method built into the human species. Menstruating young women keep the human race alive by purifying their energy and through love - conscious or unconscious love - process the negative energy of the people in their environment.
When they become conscious of this and develop a full consciousness of the idea of their energy body and how to keep it clean, it is easy for them to become immortal. The blood is the unity of earth, air, water, and fire. Menstruation is the symbol of the basic practices of spiritual purification with earth, air, water, and fire. When the human energy body is daily or frequently exposed to these practices, it can sustain the physical body in health and youthfulness forever. Menstruation is a gift of the Divine Mother God to women for perpetual happiness, and women have 30 or more years to figure out its meaning. And when they discover that the practices with earth, air, water, and fire not only make them more healthy, energetic, intelligent, powerful, beautiful, and alive, but make menstruation easier, they can become more consciously divine.

Conscious fire purification with fasting and solitude can give women total power over their body shape. Maintaining the disciplines with earth, air, water, and fire makes women not only powerful and beautiful, but caused them to shine with the Divine Light. The presence and light and healing power of spiritually purified women is a blessing and inspiration to everyone who sees them and has the opportunity to be with them. Women who practice spiritual purification consciously as well as unconsciously through menstruation have a double power. Men are attracted to them like bees to honey, and other women like being around them also.

The feminine aspect of earth is that although we may actively choose what we eat, it is the feminine aspect that digests and makes use of this food and turns it back into Divine Energy from which is came. Exercise may also be active, but the results are largely determined by our somewhat passive Divine Energy.

When we are relaxing in the bathtub, the feminine quality of the water is doing all the work of purification.
Even when we are breathing, it is the Divine Energy that is doing all the work, without much help from the mind.
Fire also does the work when we are relaxing in its presence. The more feminine the mind becomes in the presence of the fire, the greater the results.

Therefore, spiritual purification is primarily a feminine work. We have to relax and receive and allow the elements to do most of the cleaning work that brings us back into the joy of life and our Divine Source and bliss. Earth, air, water, and fire are the eternal vehicles of grace and renewal and beauty. They are the physical qualities of the Divine Mother-Mother Nature.

While the mind is thinking fifty thousand thoughts per day, the Divine Mother in the body is thinking millions of thoughts every second to keep the body together and functioning successfully.
Therefore, the Source and the Universe may be primarily Feminine, and the mediator of these two realities is the Masculine Mind. The Masculine Mind may be the director and the actor, but the Feminine Energy is the Source, the Power, and the Sustainer of all of our realities.

We are the eternal interaction of the Mother - Father God.
