Sci-Fighters is a recent addition to the App Store, which situates players in a multitude of arenas haunted by all manner of different monstrous antagonists. The aim of the app, however, is simple: through clever tactics and careful use of the game’s virtual joystick- or touch-based control system, players must ensure that their chosen character is “the last man standing” in each passing round of gameplay.

As explained in the app’s release notes:

You and 3 opponents are set in an arena which is haunted by a monster. Each player tries to be the last man standing using classical 2d-gameplay mechanics. By using different weapons like flash grenades, a monster potion (turning you into a monster), an ice-rifle or even an automatic laser you are fighting for your life over and over again.

Sci-Fighters presents itself in a comic-like 2d-style using different settings like “Martian Mansion” or “Toxic Forest”. The game draws lovely animated characters and wonderful sceneries and background on the screen, designed by SuperFlashBros-genius Adam Vian.

Featuring a local two-player mode, seven different weapons, and the option of choosing between a joystick- or touch-based mode of control, Sci-Fighters looks to be a fun, addictive application.

Apple’s App Store features plenty of “Apps For Bikers,” and a number of bike-based games have also appeared in recent years – most notably, with the Stick Stunt Biker series. One new biking game to launch in the App Store, however, is Downhill Supreme: a fun, fast-paced application, in which players can perform stunts and tricks while racing a pedal bike through a selection of downhill courses.

As the app’s developer, Reinholds Berzins, explains:

Launch off a huge jumps, balance in mid-air, fly over the rock sections and time the perfect landing. Welcome to the thrilling world of Downhill Supreme! It’s addictive, action-packed sports game where your skills will be tested in order to become downhill cycling superstar. Have you got what it takes?

Features of the app include:

• Race on 48 thrilling downhill tracks, from easy to technical.
• Build your dream bike with in-game Bike Builder. Real brands, real deal.
• Have fun the way you like it with tilt, joystick or button controls.

Admittedly, the app looks a lot like both Stick Stunt Biker and the more recent Stick Stunt Biker 2 (which is currently available to download free of charge for a limited time only). However, if you’re a fan of bike-based games and have completed the two titles in this series, it might indeed be worth taking Downhill Supreme for a spin.

So far, the game has managed to accrue a wealth of four- and five-star reviews in the App Store, indicating that players are pleased with the title.

Bam Fu is a new universal iOS app in which players must pit their agility, dexterity, and touch screen-based precision against the like skills of one, two, or three other gamers, in a bid to be crowned “champion.” Available for $0.99, the app, which is optimized for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, looks to be a fun addition to the App Store – albeit one that has the potential to spark a large number of Bam Fu-fueled arguments!

Developed by Game Oven (of Fingle fame), the game charges users with the task of “looping” their assigned color through 10 customizable pebbles which appear on screen. Coloring one of the pebbles is as simple as touching its icon, though winning a round of Bam Fu is far from easy. With a maximum of four players scrabbling around the same iDevice, Bam Fu rather constitutes a mad dash in which users scramble to color all of the in-game pebbles in as little time as possible.

In the app’s release notes, Game Oven offers the following advice:

• Be super quick.
• Block arms, push hands and squeeze fingers.
• Act like a kung-fu master.
• Protect your pebbles from being snatched.
• Play against slow people. (Works every time!)

A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that Facebook had been in “advanced talks” to purchase the popular community-driven navigation service Waze. Since then, according to a new report by Bloomberg, a number of large tech companies have expressed interest in acquiring Waze as well. And arguably the largest of these companies is Google.

Bloomberg notes:

Google has a widely used mapping tool and could adopt Waze’s technology to add social features to the software. A takeover would also eliminate a competitive threat and keep the startup out of the hands of another company.

Facebook is reportedly planning on buying Waze for as low as $800 million and as high as $1 billion, the latter being the same amount the social networking giant paid for Instagram last year.

However, the namesake company behind Waze is said to be seeking more than $1 billion, or else considering its continued independence through additional venture backing.

“None of the bidders is close to clinching a deal and the talks may fall apart,” Bloomberg’s sources point out.

Last January, rumors had it that Waze was about to be acquired by none other than Apple. But they turned out to be just that: rumors.

A month ago, Apple started airing an iPhone 5 TV ad called “Photos Every Day.” As it turns out, that ad was the beginning of an advertising campaign that sees Apple warming hearts and inducing gooseflesh with everyday vignettes of satisfied iPhone 5 users. And the latest ad to come out of this campaign is “Music Every Day,” which Apple has just posted on YouTube.

Like its predecessor, “Music Every Day” is accompanied by a moving solo piano piece. But whereas “Photos Every Day” shows how people use their iPhones to take photos, the new ad shows how people enjoy music with their iPhones.

Waving their hands, sharing their headphones, exercising, snapping their fingers, taking a shower, bobbing their heads, tapping their feet, singing along, dancing — all these and more are what people do while listening to music with their iPhones. I for one do all of these, except for exercising, that is.

The ad also shows the iPhone as part of a DJing console. Also, it appears to show the device, perhaps with Shazam or SoundHound, being used for identifying and tagging a song being played in a club.

The “Photos Every Day” ad concludes with a voiceover that says, “Every day, more photos are taken with the iPhone than any other camera.” “Music Every Day” ends on a similar note: “Every day, more people enjoy their music on the iPhone than any other phone.”

The new “Music Every Day” ad for the iPhone 5 is embedded above for you to (repeatedly) view. While it’s yet to be posted on the official iPhone TV ads webpage, it’s already available to watch on Apple’s official YouTube channel.

Wake Alarm by Tiny Hearts Limited ($1.99, 20.5 MB): Elegant and innovative, this alarm clock app cleverly utilizes the touchscreen and other unique hardware of your smartphone to create the perfect waking instrument. The UI is very clean, displaying just the current time within a glowing circle. To set an alarm, just spin that ring like a dial, select the sound and days at the bottom, then tap the checkmark to confirm. Other actions are equally as quick and simple, where a swipe down shows alarms, which can be managed using taps and swipes, and a drag left reveals the settings panel. The app has support for up to four alarms and offers a selection of 12 tones. Beyond the wonderful UI, Wake offers three alarm disabling and snoozing methods to accommodate “morning people” and those who aren’t. If you’re good about getting out of bed, simply opt for the slide to off method. Fine with waking up, but don’t want to rush things, including looking at your phone? The accelerometer and proximity sensor-based flip or slap option allows snoozing with one easy motion. And last but certainly not least, shake mode is available to jostle the most stubborn of sleepers, requiring at least a few seconds of rapid movement to fill up the screen and disable the alarm. The app also features night mode for lower power consumption and reduced light emission, however, connection to an external power source is still recommended.

Stickman Tennis by Robert Szeleney ($0.99, 40.6 MB): Try your hand, or rather thumbs, at this challenging tennis simulation game and discover if you have what it takes to be a pro. Despite the stickman players, the feel and looks are quite realistic. In fact, the play is very diverse and in-depth. You’ll play on 10 different textured courts against variously talented opponents with control over position and, of course, the type of hit. Put simply, it will be pleasantly tough. From novice to veteran, there are three avenues of play to enjoy. You may train and practice using the ball machine, test yourself in a single match, or go for the gold in one of the 64 tournaments. The game features 3-D graphics, aforementioned play modes, 10 courts, 100 players, three AI skill levels, assisted and completely manual control schemes, rewind function, match resume, match statistics, and a Game Center leaderboard.

Universal:

Guitar! by Smule by Smule (Free, 45.5 MB): If you enjoy rhythm-based music games, then you should jump right in and try this latest entry from Smule. Strumming is simple to learn but tough to master, plus there’s the bonus of greatly unique accompanying vocal performances made possible through Smule’s Sing! Karaoke app. The app currently includes 10 songs with three skill levels and three guitars (two unlockable): acoustic, rock, and electric.

Tetris® Blitz by Electronic Arts (Free, 36.1 MB): Enjoy the legendary arcade game of tetrominos in a great new way. Very similar to other “Blitz” titles, play is intensified by a limited window of time for scoring and advantage stealing power-ups. However, that’s not the only change. To best suit the fast-paced strategy, all possible destinations for each block are immediately indicated, including after orientation changes. Simply tap on a position for instant placement, but don’t become careless. In fact, high efficiency will initiate Frenzy mode, which provides easier cascading and score boosting. The game features colorful 2-D graphics, electronic soundtrack, four power-ups, as well as leaderboards, weekly tournaments, and friend challenges via Facebook.

Blip Blup by ustwo™ ($1.99, 31.9 MB): This challenging puzzler will ignite neurons as you try to efficiently launch bursts of color. Specifically, you’ll be initiating omnidirectional pulses of light, referred to as blips, to fill an entire area with color. A single quick tap starts a pulse, although, you can preview the results before firing by performing a tap and hold. Even though beginning levels contain easier to solve open areas, difficulty becomes clear soon enough as puzzles morph into winding and restricted labyrinths. The game features pixelated 2-D graphics, atmospheric electronic soundtrack, 140 levels spanning 10 packs, single finger control, star rating system as well as a Game Center leaderboard and achievements. Go Round by Little White Bear Studios, LLC (Free, 20.9 MB): Get sucked into this uniquely challenging match-3 puzzler. Rather than having gems cascade down the screen in a filled grid formation, scattered colored circles are pulled towards the center of a three ring target. To get them there and score the required number of points, you must match three or more of the same. Every match causes a merge, then a movement one ring inward. The difficulty stems from the limited number of moves allowed before the target begins to collapse. Those who are skilled enough will be able to initiate multiple merge reactions and save moves. In addition, higher scores equal more coins, which allows placing power-ups at the ready. The game features elegant 2-D graphics, a calm piano-based soundtrack, 100 levels, and color blind mode.

Quell Memento by Bulkypix ($2.99, 46.2 MB): In this artistically portrayed maze-style puzzler, your goal is to uncover a mystery story by reassembling the memories of an unknown man. Making sense of it all will require collecting the shattered parts of history in a physical manner by means of moving an orb to collect every piece. As time progresses, so will the difficulty of retrieving the items, especially with great efficiency. However, do your best to solve the path of the labyrinths, no matter what lay in the way. The game features a narrated story, beautiful vintage graphics, more than 150 levels spanning several stages, iCloud integration for game data backup and syncing, as well as a Game Center leaderboard.

Hyper Breaker Turbo by Barry Kostjens ($1.99, 30.1 MB): Brick breaking has broken out of the box as a new kind of action arcade experience. With the restraints removed, you now have more control of the paddle, not just horizontal, to reach greater heights, literally. Tinder, the hot dating app for iPhone, has launched a new matchmaking feature. Version 2.1 allows users to create a match between any two of their Facebook friends. The update also includes other new features.

First launched in December, Tinder finds who likes you nearby, and connects you with them if you’re interested. It does so through a “like or pass” system that is both simple to use, and anonymous.

With Tinder 2.1, you become the matchmaker for your Facebook friends. If they both like each other, Tinder allows them to chat. If one person says “pass,” life moves on.

Other new features include:

• Age Filter: You can now choose the age range of the people you want to see on Tinder (finally!).
• Faster Chat: No more waiting for that message to load… Chat has been vastly improved to load/send messages faster than you can say the word “chat”.
• Major bug fixes: We fixed a bunch of issues some of you were experiencing.

It will be interesting to see how folks react to Tinder’s matchmaking tool. My advice to anyone thinking of using the new feature: let both of your friends know what you’re up to. Otherwise, you might be setting yourself up for one, probably two, awkward moments.
