Sarapsa in is located on the 15th km of Alanya-Antalya main street and it was erected in the second sultanate time span of Seljuk Sultan Giyasettin II. Keyhusrev between 1236-1246. On the attachment points Antalya, Alanya-Konya-Sinop main street Sarapsa inn is a constituent of the caravanserai-inn system. With the form of a slim and furthermore long rectangle 70mX15m it has an intriguing design, which does not fit the academic design of the Seljuk inns. It resembles a citadel partition with its outlook and plan.
Sarapsa inn has a lone barrier in the middle, which bears no decoration. It is comprised of 9 parts which enclosed with expanded archways, which are aligned longitudinally as open to one another. A little mosque on the east edge adjacent to the inn. This little mosque’s barrier is opened from the outside. Completely this construction was made of slash stones. On the west edge there is furthermore a observing tower which is constructed distinct from the inn.
The monument was adorned and refurbished in an intriguing latest tendency, and today it serves as a restaurant.

FETHİYE is well sited for access to some of the region’s ancient sites, many of which date from the time when this area was the independent kingdom of Lycia. The best beaches, around the Ölüdeniz lagoon, are now much too crowded for comfort, but Fethiye is still a real market town and has been able to spread to accommodate increased tourist traffic. Fethiye itself occupies the site of the Lycian city of Telmessos, little of which remains other than the impressive ancient theatre, which was only unearthed in 1992, and a number of Lycian rock tombs on the hillside above the bus station. You can also visit the remains of the medieval fortress, on the hillside behind the harbour area of town. In the centre of town, off Atatürk Caddesi, the small museum (Tues–Sun 8.30am–5.30pm; $2) has some fascinating exhibits from local sites and a good ethnographic section.

One of the most dramatic sights in the area is the ghost village of KAYA KÖYÜ (Levissi), 7km out of town, served by dolmuşes from the old bus station. The village was abandoned in 1923, when its Anatolian-Greek population was relocated, and all you see now is a hillside covered with more than two thousand ruined cottages and an attractive basilica. Ölüdeniz is about two hours on foot from Kaya Köyü – through the village, over the hill and down to the lagoon – or a dolmuş ride from Fethiye. The warm waters of this lagoon make for pleasant swimming, if you don’t mind paying the small entrance fee, although the crowds can reach saturation level in high season – in which case the nearby beaches of Belceğiz and Kidrak are better bets. Ölüdeniz is also the starting point for the Lycian Way, Turkey’s only marked trekking route, which starts from near the Montana Holiday Village on the Fethiye–Ölüdeniz road and winds along the coast almost as far as Antalya.

East of Fethiye lies the heartland of ancient Lycia, home to a number of important archeological sites. The closest is the LETOÖN, accessible by dolmuş from Fethiye to Kumluova, the site lying 4km off the main highway. The Letoön (daily 7am–7.30pm; $2.50) was the official sanctuary of the Lycian Federation, and the extensive remains bear witness to its importance. The low ruins of three temples occupy the centre of the site, and there is also a large, well-preserved theatre, entered through a vaulted passage. On the other side of the valley, the remains of the hilltop city of XANTHOS are perhaps the most fascinating of the Lycian sites, though the most important relic discovered at the site, the fourth-century Nereid Monument, is now in the British Museum. Buses between Fethiye and Patara drop you off in Kanak, from where it’s a ten-minute walk up to the ruins (daily 7am–7.30pm; $2.50). West of the car park are the acropolis, agora and a Roman theatre, beside which are two Lycian tombs – the so-called Harpy Tomb, decorated with pairs of bird-woman figures carrying children in their arms, and a sarcophagus standing on a pillar tomb. Northeast of the agora looms a structure known popularly as the Xanthian obelisk – in fact the remains of a pillar tomb covered on all four sides by the longest-known Lycian inscription.

Now one of the Mediterranean coast’s major resorts, ALANYA is a booming place that has fortunately managed to hold on to much of its character. It’s much less crowded than Sıde, even in midsummer. Most of the old town lies on the great rocky promontory that juts out into the sea, the bulk of which is occupied by the castle – an hour’s winding climb or a short ride on an hourly bus from the tourist office. At the end of the road is the İç Kale, or inner fortress (daily 8am–sunset; $3), built in 1226 and virtually intact, with the shell of a Byzantine church, decorated with fading frescoes, in the centre. A platform in a corner of the fortress gives fine views of the western beaches and the mountains, though this originally served as a springboard from which prisoners were thrown to their deaths on the rocks below. On the opposite side of the promontory, the Kızılkule is a 35m-high defensive tower that today houses an Ethnographic Museum (Tues–Sun 8.30am–6pm; $1), and has a roof terrace that overlooks the town’s eastern harbour. On the western side of the promontory, the Alanya Museum (daily 9am–noon & 1.30–6.30pm; $1) is filled with local archeological finds and ethnological ephemera, its garden a former Ottoman graveyard. Nearby, the Damlataş (daily 6–10am; $1), is a stalactite- and stalagmite-filled cavern with a moist, warm atmosphere said to ease asthma; it’s accessible from behind the Damlataş restaurant. Alanya’s beaches, though not particularly clean, are extensive, stretching 3km west and 8km east.

Alanya’s bus station is a twenty-minute walk from the centre, but if you come in by local bus from Sıde or Manavgat you’ll probably arrive at the dolmuş terminal, five minutes north of the centre. The tourist office is at Çarşı Mahallesi, Kalearkası (daily 8.30am–6pm; tel 0242/513 1240), opposite the town museum. In summer, accommodation soon fills up and prices can be high, although there’s a concentration of pansiyons in the grid of streets between the bus station and the seafront. Oba, Meteoroloji Sok 8 (tel 0242/513 2675; £10–20/$16–32 [€15–29]), is a good budget choice, as is Üstün Pansiyon on the same street (tel 0242/513 2262; £10–20/$16–32 [€15–29]). Nearer the centre, behind Damlataş Cad, Pension Best, Alaaddinoğlu Sok 23 (tel 0242/513 0446; up to £10/$16), has immaculately clean rooms and apartments. Another central alternative is Hotel Carina, Nergis Sok 4 (tel 0242/513 1897; £10–20/$16–32 [€15–29]). The small streets running between Gazipaşa and Hükümet caddesis have lots of cheap pide and kebab places. Tuna Lokantasi, Müftüler Cad, Kalgadam Sok 7, and Buhara and Gülistan on Kuyular Önü Sok offer excellent steam-tray, pide and grilled food at reasonable prices. Kale, overlooking the harbour, has good food and views, but at a price. There are Internet cafés on İskele Cad.

Antalya, Turkey Information by Rough Guides

ANTALYA is blessed with an ideal climate and a stunning setting. Despite the grim appearance of its concrete sprawl, it’s an agreeable place, although the main area of interest for visitors is confined to the relatively small old quarter; its beaches don’t rate much consideration. The city also makes a good base for visiting the nearby ancient site of Perge. The intersection of Cumhuriyet Caddesi and Sarampol is dominated by the Yivli Minare or “Fluted Minaret”, erected in the thirteenth century. Downhill from here is the old harbour, recently restored and site of the evening promenade. North is the disappointing bazaar, while south, beyond the Saat Kalesi (clock tower), lies Kaleiçi or the old town, with every house being redone as a carpet shop, café or pension. On the far side, on Atatürk Caddesi, the triple-arched Hadrian’s Gate recalls a visit by the emperor in 130 AD, while Hesapçı Sokak leads south past the Kesik Minare to a number of tea gardens and the Hıdırlık Kulesi, of indisputable Roman vintage but ambiguous function – it could have been a lighthouse, bastion or tomb. The one thing you shouldn’t miss is the Archeological Museum (Tues–Sun 9am–6.30pm; $10), one of the top five archeological collections in the country; it’s on the western edge of town at the far end of Kenan Evren Bulvarı, easily reachable by a tram that departs from the clock tower in Kaleiçi. Highlights include an array of Bronze Age urn burials, second-century statuary, an adjoining sarcophagus wing, and a number of mosaics, not to mention an ethnography section with ceramics, household implements, weapons and embroidery.

Antalya’s main bus station is 8km north of town, although regular dolmuşes and city buses run from here to a terminal at the top of Kazım Özalp Caddesi (still known by its old name of Sarampol), which runs for just under 1km down to the clock tower on the fringe of the old town. About 5km west of the centre is the ferry dock, connected to the centre by dolmuş. The airport is 10km northeast; Havaş buses into town depart from the domestic terminal, five minutes’ walk from the international terminal, while city-centre-bound dolmuşes pass nearby. The main tourist office is a fifteen-minute walk west from the clock tower on Cumhuriyet Cad (daily 8am–6/7pm; tel 0242/241 1747). Most travellers stay in the atmospheric old town, where almost every other building is a pansiyon, although there’s also a nucleus of hotels between the bus station and the bazaar. Sabah Pansiyon, Hesapçı Sok 60/A (tel 0242/247 5345, www.sabahpansiyon. 8m.com; up to £10/$16), is clean, well-run and the owner speaks English; book ahead in season. Near the Hadarlak Kulesi, the ageing Hadrianus, Zeytin Sok 4/A (tel 0242/244 0030; up to £10/$16), has a wonderful garden and recently renovated rooms. There are unparalleled rooftop sea views from both Keskin 1, Hadarlak Sok 35 (tel 0242/244 0135; up to £10/$16), and the family-run Senem, Zeytingeçidi Sok 9 (tel 0242/247 1752; £10–20/$16–32 [€15–29]). Keskin 2, Hadarlak Sok 37 (tel 0242/242 3941; up to £10/$16), has no views but a nice orange garden in which to breakfast. Antique Pansiyon, Tuzcular Mah, Paşa Camii Sok 28 (tel 0242/242 4615, antique@ixir.com; £10–20/$16–32 [€15–29]), is housed in a characterful old Ottoman house, albeit with erratic plumbing, and has an English-speaking owner. Bambus camping, 3km south of town on the Lara road, is expensive but has its own rocky cove for swimming.

Many Kaleiçi pansiyons have their own restaurant. For elegant dining, Antique Pansiyon’s evening menu is particularly good; otherwise, the licensed Parlak, on Kazim Ozalp Cad, serves delicious grilled chicken, while Sim, Kaledibi Sok 7, offers reasonably priced home cooking. Cumhuriyet Caddesi is the location of a number of eating-places with terraces offering excellent views of the harbour; good for leisurely breakfasts. The covered pedestrian precinct, Eski Sebzeciler İçi Sokak, has a small number of restaurants serving the local speciality tandır kebap (mutton roasted in a clay pot). The Gaziantep eatery, at the edge of the bazaar through the pasaj at İsmet Paşa Cad 3, is excellent. Two other quality choices are Kebabistan on Recep Peker Cad, which offers a good take on standard pide fare, and Ol Gunegliler, just north of the clock tower, serving southeastern specialities. Nightlife is mostly located around the harbour. The popular Café İskele has tables grouped around a fountain, while the nearby Cece often has live music. Club 29, an expensive disco, boasts a terrace with pool and a restaurant. A little inland in the Kale district, İçi Karatayhan Pansiyon features the laidback Gizli Bahçe bar. Further out, the Olympos disco, beside Falez Hotel near the archeological museum, is a popular late-night dance venue. There’s an Internet café on Recep Peker Sok near Hadrian’s Gate.

Turkey’s humanized landscape is inseparable from its culture. Nevertheless, towards the outsider, Turkey provides a novel significance towards wilderness, because even within the most inaccessible or isolated branches (such as the tall hill tops or the secret continent within the valleys) the visitor remains with the feeling that sometime within history this site, already desolated and untended, has been the house towards civilizations with definite villages and city life for nine thousand years within Anatolia.

These were civilians of different starting point, arriving within waves and mingling with those already definite, each moment designing a novel synthesis. Between 2000 B.C. towards 1500 A.D., this landscape was the center of earth civilization. Interpretation of the earth scene today is predicated upon our experience of what took site onto this landscape during the last four millennia, and which is already manifested within the impairs and monuments which crown the landscape.

Up until the advent of modernity (which within Turkey is associated with the comprehensive highway program of the 1950′s) the landscape had remained as it was across millennia. When you see a replica of one of the former agrarian villages within the earth, courting back towards almost 7,000 B.C., within the Anatolian Civilizations Museum within Ankara, you cannot miss the similarity between this prototype and everybody those others that you become what we dub the vernacular. When you possess got something that works, why distort it?

In Anatolia, the village pattern is many or less how it was during the moment of the ancient civilizations. There is a nice likelihood that the route you are traveling onto is the equivalent one onto which great fighters of the East and the West trod and colorful caravans traversed along, and couriers of mail or secret treaties galloped. Perhaps it is the equivalent route traveled via St. Paul and his disciples or via Sufis transmitting divine knowledge. Perhaps Alexander the Great or King Croesus battled against their enemies onto the equivalent dot you are traveling.

Graceful aqueducts constructed via the Romans made urban concentrations possible. Bridges constructed via Sinan and else Ottoman architects dot the rural and are still used for the safe passage of commodities and services. Caravanserais courting back towards the Seljuk Empire of the 11th century offered sanctuary and relief towards weary travelers. You can even stay within a caravanserai, for numerous possess been restored into luxury hotels. Many Medresses are also within nice moods, particularly used as museums today.

In contribution towards the historical edifices proudly displayed at the primary archaeological spots such as Assos, Troy, Pergamon, Ephesus, Miletus, Priene, Didyma, Aphrodisias, Heraclia, Myra, Olympus, Chimeira, Phaselis, Patara, Xantos, Pinara, Tlos, Letoon, Halicarnassus, Cnidus, Hattusas, Alacahöyük, Çatalhöyük, Yazilikaya, Nemrut, Zeugma, Psidian Antioch, Nicea, Sardis, Gordion, Caunos, Labranda, Perge, and Aspendos, a lot coastal villages and towns are blessed with their very own Anatolian impairs onto the outskirts. This is normally an ancient theater commanding a spectacular look of the beach whereas, the villagers shall tell you, Cleopatra often possess swam. You don’t possess towards glance far for the agora either. It is presumably whereas it has always been – right at the market place! Several villages are also favored towards possess ”sunken cities” (Kekova) or impairs below the sea, which you can see whether you glance down into the crystal noticeable, turquoise waters.

The Anatolian hinterland shall appear you glimpses of else ancient civilizations: the Hattis, the Hurris, Assyrians, the Hittites, the Phrygians, the Urartians, the Lydians and the Lycians. From these civilizations arrive a lot familiar legends: ladies fighters known as Amazons, the abundance of the Lydian King Croesus, King Midas with the golden touch, and the Knot of Gordion that young Alexander was able towards reverse with the knock of his sword.

Then there are the lesser continent, both spiritual and ordinary, but with profound meaning: monasteries, tombs of locally saints, heroes, artists or poets, mosques, churches, walls, forts, palaces, fountains, and cemeteries. The hillsides are coated with smashed pieces of ancient pottery, contemporary walls often possess corner stones which may date back towards antiquity. Children play and sheep scratch amidst fragile remains. Until very newly Fairy Chimneys within Cappadocia were used via villagers as cold storage for their food or wine cellars.

The very richness of the landscape poses solemn exams for historical preservation within Turkey. Good proceed has been made within preserving the integrity of the most meaningful spots, and profession is ongoing towards excavate, catalogue and preserve the country’s tremendous legacy. Strict laws deter the export of antiquities.
