Alabama basketball player charged in connection with kidnapping

Three more people, including a University of Alabama basketball player, were arrested Tuesday in the April kidnapping of a 6-year-old girl from east Mississippi, authorities said. Sheriff James Moore in Kemper County, Miss., told WTOK-TV that Devonta Pollard, a forward on the University of Alabama men's basketball team, and Joyce Johnigan were arrested Tuesday on a charge of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Shaquayla Johnigan was arrested in Hattiesburg on the same charge, Moore said.

There has been speculation for weeks that 6-foot-3, 285-pound Eddie Vanderdoes of Auburn, Calif., was reconsidering playing for Notre Dame.

It seems longer than a week ago when Alabama’s baseball program celebrated progress, of sorts. Making the NCAA tournament after not making it a year ago is progress, but Alabama snatched the feel of digression from the jaws of progression at the Tallahassee Regional. The Tide’s one victory was a 3-2, near-miss against the No. 4 seed, Savannah State, which went 0-2 in its first NCAA try as a Division I school.
