Is anyone really surprised that “Beat Bama” is on the wall of a meeting room in the Auburn football complex? Was anyone surprised when Nick Saban, during his hiring news conference at Alabama, said he will work 365 days a year to dominate the Crimson Tide’s in-state rival? If anyone is outraged or looking to be - and some always do in this state, on both sides of the partisan divide - here’s a reality check. Coaches must motivate their teams and, to an extent, their fan bases.

Former Auburn basketball player Varez Ward pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he conspired to fix a 2012 game that his team lost to Arkansas. During a brief arraignment hearing in federal court, Ward stood quietly as his attorney announced the plea. U.S. Magistrate Judge Wallace Capel Jr. set a July 22 trial date for Ward.

Former Auburn point guard Varez Ward has been arrested for allegedly trying to fix games. U.S. Attorney George Beck said that Ward was arrested Sunday on counts of bribery relating to a sports contest and conspiracy for allegedly trying to fix the point spread for the Tigers' game against Arkansas on Jan. 25, 2012.

SEC to distribute record $20.7 million to its schools

Southeastern Conference schools will receive an average of a record $20.7 million as part of the league’s revenue sharing plan for the 2012-13 fiscal year. According to SEC commissioner Mike Slive, the SEC will distribute $289.4 million. That beats the old record of $244 million set last year.

Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive asked athletics directors to submit names of individuals who could be considered for the College Football Playoff selection committee on Wednesday at the SEC meetings. It’s lonely at the top for Alabama coach Nick Saban. Saban, who has led the Crimson Tide to three national titles in four seasons, is the only coach favoring a nine-game conference schedule at this week’s Southeastern Conference meetings. The primary discussion coming out of the SEC meetings for men’s basketball was the issue of scheduling better non-conference opponents. League commissioner Mike Slive announced that schools would be asked to submit their non-conference schedules to the league for review. Slive said the process would be a bit like a stoplight.

More than ever, we know the treasure Auburn had with Hal Baird. We know because three men have failed to replace him as Auburn’s baseball coach. Steve Renfroe, Tommy Slater and, as of Monday, John Pawlowski were forced out after failing to win like Baird won at a naturally challenged program.

Auburn has fired baseball coach John Pawlowski, hours after his final Auburn team wasn’t selected for the NCAA tournament. Pawlowski was 167-126 in five years at Auburn. He was 71-79 in SEC play, including a 13-17 this season. When the NCAA tournament field was announced Monday morning, the Tigers were not among the nine SEC teams picked.

Earlier this week, Alabama beat Auburn in a Monday afternoon SEC tournament baseball game and drew 7,241. Apparently, we’re supposed to sweat about this, because it’s the smallest crowd for an Alabama-Auburn game in the SEC baseball tournament in Hoover, according to AL.com. They’ve played each other six other times in the Hoover Met, drawing more people each time.

Auburn may yet play in its first NCAA regional since 2010, but the Tigers didn’t help their cause in Hoover on Tuesday. A 6-3 loss to Alabama in the single-elimination play-in round of SEC tournament blunted Auburn’s late-season surge and gave the Tigers and the NCAA selection committee six days to ponder them before Monday’s announcement of the field.
