My jewelry is currently being featured at a FABULOUS new shop in Montclair, NJ : ROCK PAPER SCISSORS. If you’re anywhere near Montclair, come see this store as fast as you can. They have a unique selection of fabrics (including collections by independent textile designers that are jaw-dropping), decorative papers (I can’t even describe how fun, beautiful, and subversive some of these papers are), and beads (their vintage lucite collection can’t be matched anywhere nearby). The shop also has a HUGE dedicated workshop space, loaded with equipment (including sewing machines for each person in a class!), and the list of workshops is already mouth-watering. (I’m totally going to sign up for the “Market Tote” sewing class, and I think I’ll use the funky owl fabric I spotted this morning.)

I am thrilled that my jewelry has been juried into the 16th Annual CRAFTS AT THE BAIRD — a five-day show and sale of fine crafts, including jewelry, metals, fibers, ceramics, glass, and more. The opening reception is on Wednesday, 12/2, from 7-9pm, and the show then runs from 12/3 through 12/6 from 12:00 noon to 8pm, daily. And, on Saturday, 12/5, from 1-3pm, there’s a delicious assortment of demos and kids crafts — all FREE!

I don’t have very many website design clients left, but one of the remaining few (nutritionist Elisa Zied) has written a new book and asked me to design the companion website. Excited to flex my digital design muscles again, I left my jewelry and art materials to talk amongst themselves and created a new site for Elisa’s media empire: www.nutritionatyourfingertips.com. I’m very happy with this new website project, and it’s been fun to shift from 3D-World into Virtual-World for a while.

Now that the site has officially launched (on 09.09.09!), my design software will have to take its turn waiting patiently, while I once again give my jewelry and art materials the attention they richly deserve.

My original-design “Off the Grid” bracelet, woven with needle and thread of tiny glass seed beads, is part of the juried exhibit at the World of Beads VIII - A 20-Year Retorspective. The event runs from June 19 to 21 at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC.

Creative people can get so outcome- and product-focused that the process of wandering — of playing with new ideas and materials; of taking a walk and noticing the buds on the trees and the way the neighbors argue about lawn care; of staring out the window for 30 minutes at, seemingly, nothing — feels like wasted time, time that we immediately regret having spent aimlessly when we could have spent it doing something. Then, once the meandering part of the creative process leads to that doing (which it always does), we congratulate ourselves on finally getting past the lull or block. My aim is to enjoy the lull and the wandering and value it for what it is — and part of that valuing is recognizing the role it plays in the product that eventually emerges.

So, I am now taking the time to value my wandering. After months of pushing stones around my studio table, twisting wire this way and that, spilling piles of Czech glass here and there, the “Renew” necklace emerged from that pushing-twisting-spilling time, and I am so very grateful. Were it not for the false-starts and long stretches of feeling uninspired by, and disconnected from, my materials, this piece would not be sitting in front of me today. Here’s hoping that I remember, as I continue to wander (which I always do), that one day all that wandering will pay off.
