Made in Abyss offers a breathtaking and immersive experience with its beautifully crafted world and intriguing plot, while Spy x Family delivers a perfect blend of action, comedy, and heartwarming moments that keeps me hooked from beginning to end. These two anime series showcase the vast potential and creativity in the world of animation, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate them.

Re: Staff Picks: The Best Anime of 2022

Thank you, Evan, for remembering Ranking of Kings! Thanks also for including Birdie Wing. That was appointment anime for me, too, but sadly and surprisingly did not make my top 3, because its swing in focus putt it off course (not in a bad way, just one that replaced the thing I loved initially about the series) in the latter episodes.

And I was thinking about including Love After World Domination in my top 3, Inaki, as I, too, not only watched but remember and love the genuine sweetness of that show. But I think, since it was against so many other great titles and ultimately had its protagonists not be the adults they were drawn as, I decided against doing so. But my love for the show is real.

David, damned straight! Agree 1,000% on every single point.

Pat, I was also a sucker for the creative use of art styles and animation in Bocchi. Easily my favorite thing about the show from a critical standpoint. They also, like you said, just did a fantastic job of making you root for this girl, which is exactly what the show needed to do to accomplish its goal.

Buuuuuut, no Inu-Oh?! From anyone? Sheesh. I'm just gonna assume no-one at AG saw it to soothe now my wounded heart.

My top three:
2) Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
1) Inu-Oh
1) The Girl from the Other Side

Re: Review: Code Geass – Lelouch of the Rebellion (Hyb)

Code Geass is a great basic concept and I still broadly love the show, but there's way too much domestic filler stuff, it's not just a waste of time, it's also really jarring with the main political plot, and detracts a lot from the realistic character dynamics (characters miss major geopolitical events because they can't think of another reason to skip class).

Despite the themes of the show, it has a real reluctance to delve into the really morally grey stuff. It never really considers whether any of the characters presented as morally sympathetic are actually bad people or at least complicit. Milly Ashford for example runs an elite school whose student body is almost entirely made up of colonial settlers. Gino Weinberg is one of the senior soldiers of what is explicitly shown to be a brutal imperialist army. Yet both are played straight as nice people who you should like.

Them ofc there's the rabbit hole of Suzaku. We’re supposed to see Suzaku and Lelouch as two people fighting for their own ideals of justice, just in different ways, but in the context of world history, Suzaku is a guy who collaborates with a ruthless racist authoritarian regime which occupies his native country by military force. It's like both-sidsing the Nazis: when I first watched Code Geass, I assumed it was in part a reductio ad absurdum intended to deconstruct simplistic conceptions about "terrorism". I assumed that both the scale of Britannia's crimes against humanity, and Suzaku's gradually increasing collaboration, were supposed to demonstrate that he had been naively wrong from the start. Near the end of the series, I realized that it was really meant to be a genuine moral dilemma and a 'both sides are right' conflict. But I still just don't see it myself.

Re: Choosing Her: Houshou Marine and the Healing Power of Art

That last bit in the end, couldn't you just buy and download it? (The two volumes of Oshimi's Blood on the Tracks and Vol. 6 of Kino's Journey didn't reach my doorstep until too late in 2020 to read.) However, I wanted to make sure to give a shout out to Kino's Journey Vol. 5, which continues to offer excellent retellings of stories as well as tales that supplement those that can be seen in the anime adaptations. Vol. 5 includes "The Land of Kindness," which appears in the original Kino's anime and is rendered with devastating effectiveness here; illustrations truly capture the desperate happiness the townspeople harbor in being able to leave a legacy of kindness via an impression upon a traveler. "The Land of Masks" in the same volume is equally masterful but this time in its portrayal of an unsettling atmosphere. If you loved the original Kino's anime adaptation, every single volume of the manga follows in the same tone (as compared to the disappointing later adaptation). So jump on these volumes for more Kino goodness.

Re:
