UGH.

Google finally answers all of our geeky speculation with this somewhat snarky and slightly annoying explanation of just what the fuck Chrome OS is. I seriously wanted to throttle the voice over guy. Fuck you, voice over guy. Fuck you and your pretty little drawings! So I get that Chrome OS is designed for a majority of users out there. Half the people I know use their machines for checking email, researching online (i.e. looking at porn), uploading photos, blogging, twittering, or watching shits on YouTube or Hulu or whatever. The other half are power users who do much heavier work on their machines.

Before we get too far, let’s take a look at real life demonstration of Chrome OS.

Pretty slick. That’s the quickest bootup I’ve ever seen. The shit seems to work pretty well. And although the chess game is a flash game, I’m fairly certain Chrome can handle most gaming applications. But back to us power users. Can Chrome OS run Photoshop? Also, um, if all your stuff is on the internet, what happens if you don’t have any internet? Does your computer become an expensive paperweight?

If Chrome can run the Photoshop, I will start to give a shit. It might be interesting to have a machine that had Chrome and OSX or Windows 7 so you could boot up whatever OS you want depending on your needs. There are days when I don’t use Photoshop and don’t need the full power of a clunky OS. Those days, Chrome would be more than adequate. For days that I need to use Photoshop, I could just boot up my OS of choice. I expect that Chrome probably uses less power than a typical OS so on the days when I’m just a lazy internet junkie, my power usage would be less if I ran Chrome than if I ran OSX.

Color me impressed, but not completely sold. It’ll be interesting to see if netbook manufacturers adopt Chrome as a base install when it becomes widely available.

AZM Ally and fan favorite Mike Dent lent his voice talents to Emissary, an Assassin’s Creed fan film that was entered into IFC’s Assassin’s Creed II fan film contest. Never played the game, but I feel that this is a really nice modern interpretation of the assassin’s guild. The dudes at Jabronie Pictures have their choreography down. Although their short didn’t place, I expect we’ll be seeing more kick ass excellence from these Jabronis.

Lovers of Warren Ellis’s Global Frequency may remember rumblings of a Global Frequency television show in the works. A pilot was produced, shot, edited, and then shelved for some reason and never screened. The show was never aired. I actually managed to somehow see said mystery pilot and freaking loved it. I thought Michelle Forbes was absolutely perfect as Miranda Zero and was hoping to see more. But it was never to be.

Now we get word that the CW is again interested in getting on the Global Frequency. From the mouth of Ellis himself:

I haven’t been cleared to comment yet, so I can’t really add anything to this. I’ve spoken briefly to Scott Nimerfro — by which I mean I threatened to have him stabbed, and he thanked me and told me a funny story about how he’s had worse threats — and he is Okay.

Anyway. Yes. Shouldn’t say any more until I get the nod from the studio. But yes.

I’m cautiously optimistic. I despise the CW most greatly. It is all that is wrong with broadcast television. Suck suck sucking suck! I’m also worried that we won’t get to see Michelle Forbes reprise her role as Miranda Zero. I really think it’s time for her to get some steady work and Global Frequency would have been perfect. But we’ll see. I’m hoping Ellis gets some influence over the production. If it’s done right, Global Frequency will definitely fill the void left by Sara Conner Chronicles.

Employees at the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon put together this video to promote Breast Cancer awareness wearing Medline’s new line of pink gloves. Apparently, if the video gets a million hits, Medline will make a large donation to the hospital and offer free mammograms to the Portland community.

It’s a really cute video. It’s almost like watching an episode of “Scrubs” except with real hospital employees. And everyone loves boobs!

AZM Ally Samurai Art Guy has some thoughts on the announcement that Dollhouse will not be picked up for a third season:

So yes, like Firefly before it, FOX has indeed canceled Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. This was not exactly a SURPRISE.

Honestly, as soon as I saw the November Sweeps Hiatus, I knew the show was toast. Between that and the dodgy ratings, and FOX no longer pushing the show most of this season, I knew they were just waiting to jettison the series.

It remains to be seen if FOX will hold to their tenuous and questionable word on the airing the remaining episodes. Or will they bail at the end, like they did with Firefly, yanking the season prematurely, leaving episodes unaired? I guess we’ll see, won’t we? But at least with some warning, Joss and crew can write some closure into the last episodes and not leave it hanging with a season cliffhanger. That always suks. …

I’m still kind of surprised Dollhouse got a second season to begin with.

I think one of the chief reasons the show never really found its audience is that the viewing public is generally against the idea of renting people. The morality of renting people out for sex was never really addressed in the first season. And if it was never touched upon in the second, I dare say I would have forgotten it all together. And then, Sierra’s episode came along.

“Belonging” is Sierra’s origin story. I don’t want to reveal any details of the episode because I don’t want to spoil it, but I truly think that this episode embodies the true potential of what the show could be. Dichen Lachman, who plays Sierra, has been my favorite active from the very first time I saw her on screen in season 1 and this Belonging ensures that I will follow her to whatever series she’s cast in next (well, unless it’s as someone on Hanna Montana. Then all bets are off). Dichen shows an amazing range of vulnerability and strength and it’s really a shame she isn’t the star of the show. Much more than Eliza Dushku, I think Dichen can actually carry the show. We also see a lot of growth from Topher in this episode. Up until now, he’s treated the Actives as his play things. Here, we actually see his conscience kick in. He begins to question what he’s doing and we start to see him as more than just the heartless techy nerd. We see why it made sense that Topher chose Sierra to geek out with last season when Adelle let him play with one of the Actives for a day.

There’s so much good in this episode that it makes me mad that there aren’t more Dollhouse episodes that are this strong and that we won’t get to see the show rise to its full potential.

That’s the other thing that annoys me. There’s so much potential for this show to kick some major ass and yet it always seems to fall short.

Here’s the episode I like so bad for those of you in a country that Hulu likes. I’ll be watching Dollhouse until it ends. I’m sad to see it go, but only a little. I’ll support Dichen in whatever she does next because I think she’s good enough to star in something awesome. But I won’t be signing any petitions or anything like that. It had a decent run, more than it may have deserved.

Straight out of Cape Town, South Africa, comes Goldfish with this swanky video for this track “Fort Knox.” Watching this makes me unbelievably happy. The sequences with the girlfriend and the boy are just so precious. I heart this greatly! No word on when or where they’re touring, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear more from these guys soon.

As a general rule, I stay away from the disaster movie genre. The overwhelming amount of disbelief that you are forced to suspend to prevent yourself from walking out hurts my brain meats. The disasters usually center around fringe semi-scientific theories that are horribly far-fetched. The characters are all one-note and lack the depth required to give a shit about whether or not they survive. The coincidences that lead to humanity’s rescue thanks to a hodgepodge of hapless survivors are so horribly unrealistic that they must have been thought up by pre-school children. The jumbled storytelling with cuts between government officials, the military, and regular people makes for a horribly disjointed narrative that’s difficult to follow or ultimately care about. And the sappy endings always make me dizzy from the speed at which my eyes roll.

However, the effects are usually pretty good.

2012 seems to revel in all the faults of the genre. Indeed, it seems to lift scenes directly out of other disaster films. Reviewing what actually happens in this movie would be totally stupid. There’s no point. You’ve seen it before. And if you haven’t figured out who survives just from the previews, then you’ve never seen a disaster movie.

The thing is, as dumb as it was, it was terribly entertaining and totally worth seeing on a large screen. Watching California slip into the ocean was extremely fun and seeing an aircraft carrier smash into the White House elicited huge laughs from the audience. It’s a superb demo reel for all the CG studios involved with the effects. We were promised awesome effects and they delivered awesome effects. You need to see it on a gigantic screen so that the mad destruction takes over your senses.

Just be sure to leave your brain at home.

The movie is two and half hours. About an hour of it is watchable. There’s an hour and a half that must be cut. Actually, the third act can be cut all together because at that point, we were all exhausted from rolling our eyes and laughing hard. It’s worth seeing in the theater, but you need to go with a group of people so you have someone to talk with when the eye rolling begins.

The funniest thing about this is that NASA felt the need to release an official statement regarding the end of the Mayan calendar. Come on, guys, this isn’t news! This is fucking entertainment!

I don’t know the background surrounding this beef, but this is a funny ass diss right here. 50 Cent warns us all that listening to Fat Joe’s latest will fuck you up. A lot.

This has got to be one of the classiest disses I’ve seen in a long time. Nothing about fucking your girl, nothing about shooting you in the face, nothing about stealing your money. Nope. Just a warning that listening to your music will make you wipe out when you’re trying to rail grind down some steps.

In anticipation of the English language release of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone next Tuesday, Funamation has released the first eight minutes of the dubbed version. And yes, Shinji is still as emo as ever.

Okay, I admit it, the shit looks good. The animation is goddamn beautiful at this higher resolution. The character designs are the same as they were fourteen years ago when the series first debuted, but they somehow don’t feel dated. Shame we didn’t get to see any Eva action, but I’m sure it kicks quite a lot of ass. I also like the pacing of it. Seems like they’ll cover a lot of ground in this first movie.

So I don’t know. I’m kinda sick of Evangelion at this point. But this is all shiny and new and good looking. And it’s been so long since I’ve seen the series that it has that new anime smell to it. I think I’ll wait until the later films before I jump in. I don’t mind waiting until they’re all out so I can see the madness in one sitting. Is it too much to hope for for the movies to make more sense this time around?
