Of all the steps that go into putting together a podcast series, I knew the least about editing.  Well, if I’m completely honest, I don’t know much about any of it.  Here I am, however, ready to learn!  My take on editing is that it is tedious, challenging, often thankless work.  Nevertheless, all editors interviewed for this article mentioned how rewarding it is to get an episode ‘in the can.’

Those extraordinary people involved in editing in the Between the Lines (BtL) universe come from seemingly ordinary backgrounds. Many entered into editing out of necessity or a fascination with manipulating sound. John, an editor for BtL loves to “work with sound to see how far [he] can hear it in the air.” Some editors come from artistic backgrounds, be it theater or music. Universally, editors seem to be fascinated by controlling sound.

Why edit? Robin, another BtL editor, loves listening to bloopers. Volo of BtL “[loves] hearing how the actors put different spins on each reading of their lines.” Volo often laughs at the different ‘takes’ an actor records for a part, or marvels at the emphasis an actor places on certain words. Helping the actors to deliver a quality performance is incredibly satisfying.

That is not to say editing is not without challenges. Trying to filter out hisses, hums and other background noises is high on the editors’ frustration list. Compiling multiple takes from several actors with any one of a thousand different recording systems makes creating a cohesive scene a trial. Also, finding adequate time to dedicate to the project is always difficult. The end result, however, is always the payoff. Bringing together all recorded pieces to create a believable scene is the ultimate goal.

Editors cannot go into the world unaffected by their work on BtL. Each editor comments that this line of work changes how he or she views (or listen to) other works of entertainment. Though not one editor from BtL would criticize another in the editing field, each comments on how their experience (even if limited) leads them to be more aware of how sights and sounds are brought together in movies, television, and other podcasts. Some even study the work of others to become better at what they do. This is fortunate for all of us involved in BtL!

Generally, editors in the BtL universe are not unhappy to work behind the scenes. On their lists of accomplishments, each will point to an effective or emotional podcast or segment of which they are particularly proud. Volo is most proud of writing a “How-to” article about editing that new editors have found helpful. Though they appreciate compliments, often they are the only individuals with knowledge of how much work truly goes into each project.

That leaves only one question. Have you hugged an editor today?

QC is an experiment. It is an effort to streamline the production and alleviate some burden, especially from the producers since it falls in them to make sure everything’s perfect before it is released. However, like any human, they aren’t flawless. It happens to everyone, someone posts something only to realise a tiny little mistake has been overlooked. Nobody is perfect, and our eyes and ears play tricks on our minds.

That’s why extra ears become quite helpful. As with any task too big for one, it is divided into small,manageable portions, so as to not overwhelm the workers and so they can rely on each other.

Like in Editing, QC is divided into three categories: basic,intermediate and advanced. They do similar tasks, but the higher levels perform more complex ones. The scenes they listen to are longer, have been more produced, include more people, etc. The choice of the QCers and the levels they work on depends on previous experiences and skills, such as if the person has done voice work in the past, if they’ve edited, or have any podcasting experience. It is also important to see if the person has particular listening abilities. Everyone has their skills and sharper senses. Those whose ears are their strong points, find their skills of great use in podcasting.

The process is fairly simple. After the script has been written and lines voiced and uploaded, there’s some basic editing to basically put scenes together. At this point the first round of QCers come in. They’re all asked to wear headphones because it is easier to concetrate and the sound is better. It’s not a process to be done while paying attention to something else.

While listening to a scene, they should have a questionnaire and the script to answer simple and rather obvious questions such as whether or not all the lines are present and files are correctly named. It’s incredible how many obvious things are overlooked and therefore it is important to check that they are there.

After these questions have been answered, it’s time to move onto other aspects like the voice and the sound. Lines must be clear and at a decent volume. There can’t be distracting noises in the background, and the voice shouldn’t sound muffled or electric, but natural. In higher levels they must also check the state of sfx and the music. A recommendation when listening is that it mustn’t sound cartoonish,because this is a serious piece, not a comedy. Also, usually less is more. Too much sfx or loud music can ruin a moment. They must add to the atmosphere without being distracting.

It is after this questionnaire that the QCers decide if the piece passes or not and write down notes and suggestions for the actors and editors. If the piece doesn’t pass, it is sent back to the editors with notes. They try to see if it can be done a different way or with another take and if it doesn’t work, it is sent back to the actor to re-record.

Each QCer has a certain degree of flexibility regarding approval or rejection of a piece, but they’re also asked to show some lenience towards the scenes. They can’t all be perfect and it is possible to become overzealous and reject good pieces for tiny errors. One can also be too lax and let flawed pieces through. It can all be very subjective, which is why there is a team, since it is a team effort like the entire podcast.

Since it is on an experimental phase, it isn’t strictly defined and is still subject to change. So far it has turned out to be a rather good idea. This people have become a kind of ‘beta-listener’ for podcasts and are set to become an essential part of the BTL machinery.

WOW! I mean, I wanted the part of Lorne pretty bad, but after he died, and I got the part… just a very bittersweet experience. I started watching Angel pretty late in the series, and was always hoping I’d get to see him find another role after Angel ended. It just goes to show you how important it is to really get out there and LIVE! He was taken from us far too early.
Andy…This is for you man!
 
 
3. The role of Lorne is music – heavy. Tell us about your own musical background.
 
Actually, I have been doing amateur theatre for about 20 years, and most of that has been in musical comedy. I really love performing, and singing in public. Some of my favorite roles have been Nicely-Nicely in Guys and Dolls and The Baker in Into The Woods. I especially love shows by Stephen Sondheim (One of Joss’s faves too.) I am really looking forward to this part, because Lorne has such a distinctive, and “balls-out” vocal style. Can’t wait to make with the singin!!
 
 
4. How does it feel to have your own special back up crew of Lornettes?
 
I haven’t recorded the lines with the Lornettes, but I really can’t wait to get into it. Just hope my real life wife understands.  

5. What did you to prepare for the audition? For your own lines?

I watched a lot of the Angel Episodes where Lorne sang. Even though the audition called for a song from OMWF or Dr. Horrible, I thought initially about doing a part of Lady Marmalade from the Vegas episode instead just to be different. Then I started to look at the song that Sweet sings in OMWF, and I thought that Lorne would really dig that song and that he’d really be able to sell it. When doing the lines, it takes me a couple of tries at it to “build up” the energy to Lorne’s level. He’s such a great character, and the dry sense of humor he often displays is fun to do. 
 
6. Have there been any lines/scene that were difficult to act?

Again, we haven’t really gotten to the episodes where Lorne is really featured. But I can’t wait to get the scripts where he first meets with Lee DeMarco. THAT’S a relationship that deserves some background. How they first got in “business” together before everything went south for Lorne. And that gets into what is so great about the Between The Lines projects is you get to have some of those details filled in. (It may not be canon… but who cares?!?)
 
 
7. Do you have a favorite moment in Angel the Series involving Lorne? In ABtL?

Oh, geez! Tons of ‘em! I think the episodes where Lorne goes back to Pylea are some of his best moments. Imagine acting as a severed head! And I love his commentary on the goings on during the “Spin the Bottle” episode. Funny… and yet… a bit regretful. I think his best moment though was his last in the TV series where he has to kill Lindsey. I mean, he’s a demon… but killing, and betrayal is really not in him. He’s really the one who has to take one for the team, and it shows in his last line, “G’night, folks.”
 
 
8. Are there any projects or messages you’d like to share with our audience? 

I currently don’t have anything else in the works. However I increasingly interested in the experiences that audio and video podcasting has to offer, and I am playing around with some concepts (serial comedy, Steampunk), etc. that I might be able to develop into something.

Well, after a few wonderful interviews, this rookie reporter was set straight.

So, what’s the first step in creating sound effects? Well, it all starts with the scripts. People in the sound effects department read the script, where they are given certain scenes to work on. It is important that they read their scripts very carefully, so as to avoid mishaps such as using the sound effect for a woman’s high heels when a male character is walking.

Then, they go to websites such as Soundsnap or Freesound Project to search for the sounds they need. Sometimes finding just the right sound effect can take quite awhile. For example, finding the sound of twilight can take some time as it is hard to distinguish between night and evening from an audio standpoint.

Often creativity is needed in finding sound effects, as sometimes the desired sound can’t be found. Once the sound of a safe was needed and in this case, a clicking sound, the sound of a door opening, and some creaking was used. The editors then put these sounds together.
On occasion sound effects don’t take long to find at all, even if they are unusual. Once, an episode of Buffy Between The Lines needed eerie flute music and even though the person searching for it thought it would take forever, It only took ten minutes.

Sometimes sound effects can be found somewhere totally unexpected, such as an alligator sound found at the website for the U.S. Wildlife and Fish Fund.

Finding all the sounds needed usually takes one or two hours, or a little longer if you’re just starting out. As you gain more experience, you learn how to phrase your searches and build up a library of clips for reuse. After all the sounds are found you also need to create a file detailing the creator of the sound effects, where it was found, the original filename, and the new filename [if it needed to be changed.] After doing all this, the sound clips still have to be uploaded to the FTP site. With two or three scenes an episode to provide sound effects for, this whole process can take up to approximately six hours.

Besides finding sound effects, some members of the sound effects crew are also responsible for making their own sound effects. This is called foley. Foley is often done with a lot of improvisation, such as dragging a folder along your desk to make the sound of a clipboard hitting a counter.

I hope this article has given you a better understanding and appreciation of what the amazing sound effects crew does to bring you the sounds that add so much to your favorite podcasts. I know this reporter will never listen to a podcast the same way again!

I have returned from my journey. As you know, I was at a gathering of brilliant minds and talents, known to the lay man as a Science Fiction Convention. I went in costume so as not to give away my true identity, not for fear of ridicule (as that is one of the few places I would not fear that), but because I was on a secret quest to find an actual prop from one of my favorite movies. They had for auction one of the really real life… oooh, I’m so excited I can barely type this… Deloreans used in Back to the Future!!! I knew I had to have it, but my arch-nemesis, we’ll call him Biff (seems appropriate), was determined to outbid me and win the Delorean.

Biff had contacted me before the event to let me know that he would be watching for me and so would his body guards, thus why I donned the costume. Although I probably would have gone in costume anyway. My costume was made by my wonderful cook, Mrs. Lovett. She can really use a sewing machine, that lady. She made me a great costume from the classic 80s cartoon, Thundercats. I was Panthro, complete with big, muscley arms. They made me feel tough. I brought my body guard along as well. Tori was dressed as Cheetarah and I’m not ashamed to say, she was smoking hot!

The Con was great. I got some action figures, comic books, video and computer games, and some awesome t-shirts. When it was time for the auction, Tori and I stayed toward the back. I didn’t want to be too conspicuous. Biff’s goons were pacing on the sidelines, just waiting to see when I would make my move. There were some really terrific items: a cape from Superman III, the Dread Pirate Robert’s mask from The Princess Bride, and a life size model of Jabba the Hut. I almost bid on that last one, but I knew what was coming and had to hold out.

The Delorean came one stage and everyone gasped. I won’t bother you with the boring details of the bidding war. Needless to say, it went for a rather large amount of money. At one point Tori had to step on one of Biff’s body guard’s feet. I may have heard a crack. He didn’t come back for more after that. It was the kind of auction everyone wants to be a part of. The auctioneer was talking a mile a minute. Everyone was really into it. Some people may have bid that didn’t mean to, then were relieved when someone outbid them. In the end, an old man with white hair held out longer than anyone else. Come to think of it, he did look remarkably like Christopher Lloyd. Could it have been? Nah, probably just a costume.

I was a little let down after the auction, but then I met Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca. I got an autograph and talked a little Wookie with him. It was a great way to end an awesome weekend.

About KARIE BIBLE — Born a heterochromatic baby (put down the medical reference book – it means she’s got two different colored eyes) with the last name “Bible” on Halloween night, Karie was destined to be nothing if not unique. Her passion for history and Hollywood’s past led her to starting a cemetery tour in 2002 under the guidance of acclaimed historian Marc Wanamaker. In keeping with her love of living history, she gives the tour in vintage gowns from her collection that spans the 1920s through the 1950s.

Karie has lectured at LA’s Silent Movie Theatre, The Old Town Music Hall, The Queen Mary and is also the currently reigning “Lady in Black” to honor silent film star Rudolph Valentino. The cemetery (which started off as Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery) had a rough history. By the end of the 20tth century, the owners had run into financial difficulties and the cemetery became run down. This caused California to stop new internments in the cemetery. In 1989, Tyler Cassity of Forever Enterprises brought the property, renamed it Hollywood Forever, and started restoration. The cemetery is in current use and offers a wide array of services, including a live webcast and LifeStory tributes.

You’ll see the graves of many famous folks at Hollywood Forever Cemetery including John Huston, Peter Lorre, Jayne Mansfield, Johnny Ramone, Cecil B. DeMille, and “Alfalfa” from the Little Rascals. There are also tombs, monuments, headstones and two large indoor mausoleums (one of which you might recognize from the TV show “Charmed”).
Some of the BtL crew got to visit Hollywood Forever recently, and see for ourselves where our episode takes place! Due to its history, Hollywood Forever Cemetery has many ghost stories attached to it, including the story of the Lady in Black, which we “borrowed” for Episode 3.

In 1926, film star Rudolph Valentino was at the height of his fame. On August 23, 1926 he died from a perforated ulcer (which caused blood poisoning). He was so popular that it’s estimated that a crowd of 100,000 people showed up for his funeral services in New York City. After the service his body was transported to Los Angeles by train and fans lined the tracks to get a glimpse of the train. Once in Los Angeles, some 80,000 people came to the cemetery as his casket was carried into the Cathedral Mausoleum on the grounds of Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Valentino was supposed to get a more elaborate memorial, but complications arose and the Mausoleum became his final resting place.

The legend of the Lady in Black is said to have begun on the first anniversary of Valentino’s death when a mysterious woman, dressed all in black, visited Valentino’s crypt with red roses and left them there. All without saying a word. She apparently appears every year since then. Not long after the media got word of the story and began writing about “The Lady in Black”.

While the true Lady in Black may not have been ghostly, the legend has sparked many tales of a ghostly lady in black kneeling in front of Valentino’s tomb. Others have reported being alone in the mausoleum and finding roses that suddenly appeared in the previously empty vases that hang from Valentino’s crypt. Others have heard footsteps or feel like they’re being watched.

The Lady in Black captured Nashville songwriters Danny Dill and Marijohn Wikin and, in 1959, they wrote and produced a song called “The Long Black Veil”. First recorded by Lefty Frizzell the song has also been performed by Johnny Cash, The Band, The Dave Matthews band, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and others.

If you’re in Los Angeles, make sure you take the historic walking tour which is lead by historian Karie Bible, who has taken over the Lady in Black’s official duties of leaving a rose on Valentino’s crypt every year.

David took it as a commentary on his Game Mastering abilities, of course. And Bob’s talking about kicking Pete out of the group. Everyone else is very carefully staying out of it. I’ve been “volunteered” to talk to Pete about this – the joys of being his roommate, I guess. No sign of Pete yet, and I gotta get some sleep before work tomorrow…

P.G. Holyfield is the author of one of our original Wolfram & Hart stories, “Exit Strategy”. He’s also the creator of the free serialized podcast novel, “Murder at Avedon Hill“, which is an epic high fantasy murder mystery. And I do mean epic, or as Evo Terra infamously dubbed it, “the podiobook that never ends.” On May 21, 2009 after 42 episodes, “Murder at Avedon Hill” did finally wrap production. Not only was this story epic in scope and scale, but the sheer number of over 45 talented voice actors from many podcasts also lends to this grand tale.

“Murder at Avedon Hill” began its life in 2003 when P.G. started working on a gaming module for BioWare’s Neverwinter Nights, which is a licensed D&D video game. When the module itself did not become a reality, P.G. took the story ideas and non-player characters and created an interactive story that he shared with the Neverwinter Vault fan website. He posted chapters on a bi-weekly basis, about 23 chapters at the time, and ended each chapter with either a question or cliffhanger. He made the story interactive by getting input from the readers, not with a standard polling booth feature, but with a betting system for readers to bet on what would happen next.

Eventually, P.G. took all of the source material and crafted a manuscript for a novel, which he did shop around to some publishers. The cross-genre nature of the work meant that no one was interested at the time. He discovered Lulu.com and used their print-on-demand services to self-publish “Murder at Avedon Hill” as a paperback novel. Then along came podcasting.

On June 13th, 2007, chapter one went live at MurderAtAvedonHill.com and introduced us all to the Land of Caern. “Murder at Avedon Hill” has been described as “Brotherhood of the Wolf” meets “The Name of the Rose” or as Agatha Christie meets J.R.R. Tolkien. In the story, we follow Arames Kragen, an Aarronic Advisor, and his student, Arrin Perti, as they make their way to Avedon Hill.

Arames is a retired monk of the Aarronic Order, a brotherhood that has served the Land of Caern for centuries. He once served as an Aarronic Advisor to the Prince of Yew, Renoir Perti. Now, as a favor for Arrin’s mother, Arames has taken Arrin on as a student. They are en route to a conference and need to use the Olviaran Pass which starts in Avedon Hill to shorten their trip to Northern Grozh.

However, upon arriving at Avedon Hill, they discover that Lord Avedon has closed off access to not only the Olviaran Pass but also the town of Avedon Hill itself. At the town’s gates, they meet Cletus, the gatekeeper, who explains that Lord Avedon has done this because the manor’s Housemistress, Gretta Platt, has been murdered. No one is allowed to enter Avedon Hill, not only for the sake of the ongoing investigation, but also while he is in mourning.

Undeterred, Arames offers to help with the investigation, hoping that by solving the mystery he can convince Lord Avedon to open the Olviaran Pass for them. However, once inside the gates, and the investigation begins, Arames and Arrin learn that there are many mysteries within Avedon Hill. Not the least of which is determining whether or not a vampire is responsible for killing Gretta Platt.

For in the Land of Caern, we do find vampires and their masters, moonbeasts and their ilk, and the Children of Az. Az is the father of the gods, and his Children are the deities who can enter the Land of Caern under certain Constraints and live out their own lives, and affect the world they live in.

It will take all of Arames’ knowledge of prophecy, myth and legend, and his skills as an advisor, as well as his abilities to work with the “river of magic” that flows all around the Land of Caern, to learn all of the secrets of Avedon Hill. At the same time, Arrin learns more about himself, his gifts passed down from his mother, and discovers what he’ll have to face as he and his mentor solve the mystery.

For the podcast production, P.G. himself gave the narration and also provided the voices of Arames, Arrin, Cletus, Cousin Red, and Ollus Wenk. The story has a very large Dramatis personae so P.G. enlisted the help of a fine cast of voice actors from around the world of podcasting. Moreover, you can find that P.G. has given voice to characters in other podcasts as well.

He has portrayed “Auberon” for Chasing The Bard by Philippa Ballantine, “Franklin Rothchild” for Billibub Baddings and The Case Of The Singing Sword by Tee Morris, and “Kevin Darby” for Metamor City: Making The Cut by Chris Lester. He’s also had parts in Patrick McLean’s The Seanachai, Rick Stringer’s Variant Frequencies, Star Wars – Codename: Starkeeper by “Indiana Jim” Perry, and episodes of Buffy Between the Lines.

His current project is a short fiction anthology podcast set in the Land of Caern. This new anthology, “Tales of The Children”, began on 09/09/09, and features his stories as well as others from many of his fellow podcasters. Our own Tabitha Grace Smith is one of the authors in the anthology.

Due to the success of the podcast, “Murder at Avedon Hill” has been picked up to be published by Dragon Moon Press, and is expected to be released in late 2009, maybe early 2010. P.G. is hard at work on editing right now for this release.

This level of awesome has long been the focus of the bards of old, and as such, P.G. himself is the subject of another bard’s musical wit. Our own Kim “the Comic Book Goddess” Fortuner has a song all about the torment of his cliffhangers and waiting for each new episode entitled, “Damn You Holyfield”.

Finally, the podcast was nominated as a finalist for a 2009 Parsec Award for “Best Speculative Fiction Audio Drama (Long Form including Independents)”. It was also a finalist for the 2008 Podcast Peer Awards. P.G. is also one of the co-hosts of the Dead Robots’ Society writing podcast (which was also a 2009 Parsec Finalist for “Best Writing-related Podcast”).

No one was more surprised than me at becoming a voice actor — it’s not something I’d ever considered. What strange set of circumstances could lead a retired 64-year-old IT guy to try voice acting?

The tale begins with Buffy. My wife and I were introduced to Buffy the Vampire Slayer by some younger folk, and we became instant addicts. So much so we we bought the box set of Buffy, then Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible, and Dollhouse.

I also discovered Buffy Between the Lines. Like Spike at Halloween, all I could think was, “This is just … neat!” How on earth, I wondered, did these amazing young people do all this?

In a nutshell: creativity, energy, love of Joss’s work, love of story telling, talent, cooperation, drive, and very hard work. Remarkable people from all over the globe, using the Internet to freely donate their talents and time to create a fan-based audio drama of remarkable quality and freshness.

When I heard that Between the Lines Studios was holding auditions for the upcoming Angel Between the Lines, I thought heck, even auditioning would be fun, so I tried out for General Cast, never expecting to be considered. When an email arrived welcoming me to the cast, I had an Oz moment: “Huh!”

My first assignment was to shout “To Lorne!” as part of a group. Next I got a few lines as a dying demon. In another episode, I played a New York-born “gansta.” I also had the opportunity to narrate a couple of wonderful fanfic stories for one of Tabz’s other Joss-related podcasts, Strangely Literal.

My largest part has been the character of Johannes Cordner in P.G. Holyfield’s “Exit Strategy” (Tales from Wolfram & Hart). I studied the story to understand the nuances of Johannes’s state of mind as he speaks: confident, irritated, amused, impatient, whatever, so I could try to get the delivery right.

I practiced the lines several different ways before recording them. The drill is to record each line or set of lines three times, giving them a different inflection and emphasis each time so the producers can choose the delivery they think best fits the scene.

Every assignment has a tight schedule and recorded lines are delivered to the producers and sound specialists at a common upload site. There’s a strict naming convention, and the MP3 files must fit the specification listed in the guidelines made available to all cast members. Some lines are recorded solo while others are recorded in group mode, via Skype, with one of the experienced cast members or crew acting as director, helping with microphone placement, spotting fluffed lines, checking pacing, and offering tips on delivery.

While there’s a lot of preparation and work involved in recording even a minor character for an episode, the excitement and satisfaction you feel on hearing a completed podcast is fantastic. You think to yourself, “I was part of that,” working with all those shiny people. Yes, Spike, this is just … neat!

An assistant producer is a great job to have on Angel Between the Lines. I get to have a part in almost everything. My job starts when the first script is released. I make sure I have down everyone’s roles. The day before the recordings are due, I email everyone to remind them to get their recordings in the next day. The day after the recordings are due, I email the people who haven’t gotten theirs done yet and ask when they’ll have their recordings done. I then proceed to bug them until the recordings are completed. Sometimes this can be a long process.

When the cast and crew see emails from me, I’m pretty sure they go, “Oh, crap!” I send email reminders and make sure everything gets done for recordings, editing, SFX, QC, and writing. I have to keep up with when things are due and what is overdue. If I don’t check for more than a couple days, I get really swamped.

QC has added additional responsibilities for me. Instead of just marking things as finished, I now need to read the QC forms and if there is a problem, let the actor or editor know it needs to be fixed. Next, I follow up and make sure it gets done, and then QC listens again to be sure it’s ready for the next level.

Sometimes, if people are unresponsive to my emails, I pull out the whip or threaten to sick the dragon on them. If that doesn’t work, Tabz has been known to step in, which usually gets a response within minutes. Don’t mess with the Tabz!

For the most part, everyone is really great about letting me know when they can’t complete an assignment or are going to be late. I really enjoy seeing the project come along and keeping it going. I also ask people to volunteer for extra work a lot, and they’re really great about doing it.

I got asked to do this job for season 2 of Buffy Between the Lines, because I told Kim I had no job and a lot of time. Tabz and Kim will fill your schedule if you tell them that. I did get a 200% raise, though I was making nothing before… I’m really glad, because I’ve gotten to know so many great people. I’m in contact with just about everyone on the cast and crew at some point. This is the greatest project to be involved in!

ONLY IF Buffy Between the Lines wins the Entertainment category the producers will produce a Post-Season 7 episode of Buffy Between the Lines.

Peter had a monumental task of giving these characters life. In fact, unlike some of our other episodes, this one is pretty much 100% Peter’s from outline to completion. And he did a great job. In a series of flashbacks we not only see who Wesley’s gang are, but why they are. From Diana Espen (who we met in BBtL S2, Episode 7) to Hawkins (a former Wolfram & Hart lawyer) to Jones (a former member of Holtz’ gang).

When we started Buffy Between the Lines one of the first conversations we had was how we could add more face time to some of our favorite smaller characters – Larry Birdsall being one of the first folks we thought of, along with the Evil Trio and Ethan Rayne. It was part of the whole “between the lines” vibe. Probably some of our strongest episodes from Buffy Between the Lines hardly featured the main cast.

Yet, Fragmented has something special. Probably some of our most obscure roles pulled into the light. But it was fun to hear the end result. I especially loved how out of step the end felt. It was the perfect reminder that Wesley is far from home.

This season we’ll bring some more tiny characters back, including everyone’s favorite floating fish – Betta George and Electro Girl, Gwen Raiden. And those are just two of many we’re bringing back. We hope you enjoy, and feel free to leave which smaller characters should get their day in the sun… unless of course they’re a vampire.

The writers have taken some characters that received very little screen time in the original “Angel” series and have given them a story of their own, fleshing out the character that the fans never really got to know.  “My character is in one memorable scene in the first season of Angel a very funny scene, which we have to reenact. But it’s so interesting that the writers took that character and developed him fully. Hawkins was just a sleazy Wolfram and Hart lawyer and now he has a back story and you find out what he had been through since that moment,” said Robin Burdge.

Peter, a writer for ABTL, said “I really like secondary characters (specifically recurring ones) as they really flesh out a whole universe and make the story feel like it takes place in a universe unto itself and we’re only really seeing one story from that universe. After seeing them pop out of the crowd again and again, it’s always a treat to take a peak into their personal lives, hence the episode I wrote.  I do, however, think that if a secondary character gets overexposed it does lose a lot of its mystique. This usually happens right after a breakout episode like the one that I wrote, so I hope that these particular characters do kind of fade back into the background slowly.”

Along with some original characters, ABTL is also including some characters that were only seen a few times in supporting roles and giving them stories of their own.  There are a lot of characters the ABTL cast and crew hope to see return, David Nabbit seems to be a clear favorite.   “As far as a secondary character I’d love to see once again, if only for a short while, is David Nabbit from “Angel.”  Where the hell did that guy go?” said Peter.  Lucky for them, David Nabbit has been confirmed for ABTL, as well as Gwen Raiden.

Mark Smith will be voicing David Nabbit and he is extremely excited about the opportunity.  He was also the voice of Mr. Chase in Buffy Between the Lines (BBTL) Season 2, but he admits that he did not feel as comfortable with the role as he does with David Nabbit.  Mark Smith went on to say, “I am David Nabbit, except for, you know, the billions of dollars and the demon fetish.  But I’m a nerd, I play D&D bi-weekly, I have programmed computers since about 1978 (age three) when my sister saved her baby-sitting money and bought a TRS-80 Model 1.”

For the actors specifically, one has to wonder if it is harder to play a character you only get to see once or twice as opposed to a main character that appears in every episode.  “I suppose we have more latitude in how to play them because they aren’t quite as well defined.” Mark said, “but the thing about Whedon is that even characters we don’t see much of are still vivid. Even though Gwen (Raiden) only appeared in three episodes, we still got to learn a lot about her through flashbacks.”

It is hard to argue that without secondary characters, the Whedonverse would be lacking greatly.  They have enriched our television screens, comic books, and now our podcasts.  Who knows what character the writers at Between the Lines Productions will resurrect next?

Leftover Chinese takeaway does not a balanced breakfast make, but I’m running late this morning so it will have to do. Hoping I’ll have time to pick something up, it’s that or more re-heated beef Chow Mein. I ordered too much, it was Fred’s favourite dish and we’d always run out. I didn’t get it from the usual place encase they recognised my voice and ask how Angel and everyone was (we saved the owners from a Serparvo Demons once.) The Blue Sun restaurant turned out to be a good alternative, though the fortune cookies were some of the strangest I’ve read. (Yes, I was lead to believe that the main function of a blog was to discuss eating habits. It seemed like a good place to start – though that could be the lack of sleep and post-celebratory hangover talking.)

My new team felt like celebrating the completion of our first job and how none of us died and or got chomped on by zombies. The festives turned out well, though I have no illusions that I’ll ever see my security deposite again and one of my bookcases doesn’t look dissimilar from charcoal. I should never have asked Hawkins to replicate the spell he used on Arnold – magical demonstrations and scotch don’t mix figuratively or literally.

Apart, from that I’m satisfied with my new colleagues, and despite not knowing a great deal about one another, we seem to be working well together. I suppose it comes from understanding one another we’ve all lost the people that mattered to us. Maybe there are possible friendships for us to build on, well maybe not Hawkins, he worked at Wolfram and Hart for many years, maybe if he replaces my furniture I’d be willing to reconsider.

I’m also uncertain about Jones allegiances and if they’re still with Justine. I’m certain she is some how involved with Angel and Cordelia’s disappearances, and perhaps the key to finding them will be in finding her first. I doubt I will ever be close to my old people again but I do realise that world needs it’s champions.

Diana’s the one I’m most trusting of her agenda is pretty clear. She’s the one that convinced me to starting writing this blog when I mentioned that I was no longer keep a record of things. I don’t think I’ll go back to keeping my ‘Watcher’s journal’ something I kept writing even after being fired. It became less appealing when I recorded a fake infanticidal prophecy down in it.

I’m enjoying this form of recording my thoughts there’s a vibrancy too it that I’ve found like in Watcher’s journals. I’ve seen old volumes of them, many of them are achieved in the vaults of the Watcher’s headquarters in London. Vaults that could aptly be described as crypt for old thoughts; those that wrote them down no more living than the creatures they sent their Slayers after in the continued kill or be killed struggle. This we were taught nothing of, not of the thousands of dead girls names and expiration dates on yellowed pages. No, that wasn’t our first lesson (or even two hundredth.)

Thankfully all the journals I kept while an active Watcher were destroyed, which didn’t leave the Council too happy with me, shortly before firing me, as the considered them their property. I also had to endure a phone call from my father about failing in my responsibilities. I tried to explain about that they were in Sunnydale high school when it exploded. I felt to embarrassed to mention that I had removed them, along with the rest of Rupert Giles’ library, but that they had been ‘strategically’ placed back in, by one of the Slayer’s friends. Cordelia would never tell me who was behind it.

Then the following year, while working for Angel, his office suffered a similar fate – the office were my diaries were kept. So, maybe the Council are onto a good thing, with keeping them at their main headquarters, it’s unlike to sufferer a same fate as the old office or school.

I really hope this computer doesn’t decide to combust in a ball of fire too (if this blog doesn’t continue then you’ll know why) it had a close call last night.

I think I’ve done enough dwelling on things for today, but sometimes I just can’t help looking backwards, in trying to understand how I’ve gotten where I am.

I’ve been an extremely vocal defender of Angel: The Series since it’s premier 10 years ago. It tends to be treated like something of the red-headed stepchild of the Jossverse, often ignored and left off of the ubiquitous “Best of” and “Favorites” lists that flood the internet. In my opinion it was, in many ways, better than it’s parent series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Let that comment serve as a fair warning…)

Having never listened to any of the previous Between the Lines productions I didn’t really know what to expect. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. The writers, cast and crew clearly know the material… naturally. But they also understand and respect the characters. The story fits perfectly into the space between seasons, and the production quality is pretty good. It will take a lot of getting used to, hearing other actors give voice to my favorite characters, but they did a great job.

Now, most people don’t know, or might be surprised to know. I really don’t do a lot for auditions. I promote, that’s kind of my thing, but Kim handles most of the producer’s role of auditions. She gets tons of support from our Associate Producers – Heidi and Larissa. I get to play voyeur and watch the process. And it is a huge process. This year there’s nearly 100 people auditioning and most of them for multiple roles. That’s a lot of sound files!

Even though the process isn’t finished yet, I already know it’s going to be amazing.

There’s lots of things I love about producing an audio drama. One of the most enjoyable things is seeing how excited people get about a production. Every time an audition comes in you can feel the energy and the creativity that person is bringing to the team. It’s like finding the perfect team to play basketball for the Olympics. Every single production and podcast we work on with Between the Lines Studios has brought us some of the most talented people I have ever met. People are what make BtLS so amazing. If it was just me or Kim, the show wouldn’t be great. It sounds cliche to say that everyone working together is what wins the awards, the praise and the listeners, but it’s true.

So seven minutes until we close auditions and I’m excited. This season of Angel Between the Lines is going to be amazing. I can’t wait to work with people from our past two seasons of Buffy Between the Lines and I can’t wait to meet the new people we’ll be working with for ABtL. If you’re one of those people, just know from before I even “officially” met you – I was excited to work with you. If you’re listening and never considered being a part of BtLS I encourage you to go for it when we start up production for Firefly Between the Lines. Everyone has something amazing to offer, and you might just be the person who makes our next production even better than the last.

Kevin got his start writing humor as a stringer for The Davis County Clipper in the early nineties when he wrote an allegedly-funny weekly column.  When a new editor took the paper in a new direction, the column was axed.  In June of 2006 he resurrected the column as a podcast and has grown an audience of devoted fans.

Picture a hamster running on a wheel. Picture that hamster running really fast. Now picture that hamster collapsing by its water bottle, tired, but feeling accomplished.

It’s a day after the auditions for Angel Between the Lines have closed, and I feel like that hamster.

Don’t get me wrong – Buffy Between the Lines has brought me wonderful memories, friends, and opportunities that wouldn’t have occurred otherwise. But, boy, is it a lot of work.

Audition time for me means lots of emailing back and forth between me and Kim, Heidi and Tabz, and lots of staring at spreadsheets and audio files. It means emailing all those who auditioned and laying the foundation for the next step of the audition process: callbacks.

As I’ve said, it is a lot of work. That happens when you work on an international audio drama with hundreds of people. But, as I’ve also said, it’s very rewarding. There’s something so exciting and enjoyable about being at the start of it all: seeing the auditions come in and getting excited that so many people auditioned. It makes me very happy to be involved in the fandom in a project such as this. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next!

So it’s the dawn after the eve of the night that auditions ended. I’m writing this on March 22nd and I am so excited.

I joined the crew after the auditions for BBTLs Season 2 so I never got to audition for a role. So this has been my first time through the audition process. I don’t envy the work that Kim, Heidi and Larissa have ahead of them to turn all of the audtions into a cast for ABTLs. Plus I can’t wait to find out if I have a role in the new production, and if I don’t then it’s still been fun trying…

As Tabz’s has said if you didn’t get involved this time around then please do so when Firefly Between the Lines kicks off. I was nervous about getting involved when I first contacted the crew having never done anything like this before. I needn’t have been, everyone is so welcoming and helpful, so if you’re not sure what to do then I encourage you to give it a try…

So here I am, frantically getting ready for the “work” part of auditions. The submission time is all cake and anxiety for me, waiting to see how many people apply, waiting to see if the right kinds of people apply, waiting to see if people are excited about the latest production.

Thankfully, I have Larissa and Heidi to help with the organizing and emailing or I would never get it all done (and hopefully they will share their parts in this).

My first step is to make sure all the files are in order. I’m sure there’s a couple stray files we don’t yet have (and should) so with the help of the girls we’ll get those tracked and requested. I’ve been able to keep on top of responding to the questions so far (there haven’t been many), and I’ve set up (with some help, thanks Rose!) the pages for the callbacks. They are not traditional callbacks really, just some roles we have that need a specific sound, so we have to ask for additional readings for them. They aren’t even necessarily large roles, just important ones with a unique sound (that’s actually true of all our roles for auditions). The callbacks are also usually roles we want to keep secret for some reason.

Once I know we have all the files for a part, I’ll download them and listen to them each. At this point I’m not concerned with who they are, I just want to listen to see what they can do. I pick out people for the callbacks and start to narrow the auditions down to a few people for the part (I check them against the original actor saying the same things, but I’m looking more for the spirit of the words than if they sound EXACTLY like the actor). If there is a clear match (this is rare) then I will figure out who it is and list it on my spreadsheet. If not, then I will list a few favorites and move on.

Once I have all the roles narrowed down to a few people, I will listen again and see if there are any standouts. Often at this point there is someone I favor and then I will indicate that.

Then comes what I like to call the giant logic puzzle. If one person is a favorite for a role then I will check to see if they auditioned for any other roles. If so, I’ll pick the one they are best for (this may be because one role is more essential than another is or because they sound PERFECT for one role and are just the best pick for another role, it varies) and then I cross that person off for all the other roles they tried. That narrows things down further and when I get stumped, I turn to Tabz and get her opinion.

There are also the points where I have it narrowed down to 5 people and am stuck (Tabz too!). At that point, I usually submit the pick to the exec team for a vote. I make sure the team has no idea who the files are of and just let them go with their gut. From there we usually have a clear choice.

There are a few other things we take into consideration, and we do this once I’ve narrowed things down. If someone is not interested in anything but a main role and they are not the best choice for that role, I’ll stop considering them. If someone has been a great and positive support and worker, then we’ll remember that. It’s true that someone could be amazing and not get cast because they turned out to be more work in the long run for us. Anyone we don’t know already gets the benefit of the doubt.

Ok so that’s the start of the process, it takes days, and this year it looks like it’ll be a while just listening through the audio (and I listen to every second). However, I’m very excited to get going! I hope this gives some insight as to how we go about casting (and was not too dull!).

Thankfully, each year the technology gets better and makes things easier for us to keep track of and organize it all, and if it weren’t for Larissa, Heidi, and Rose, I would have already pulled out all of my hair.

One of the Sisters suggested that I start keeping a journal. It felt weird holding a pen and poising it over paper. It’s kind of like “hey pen, I know we haven’t seen each other for awhile, but I’m your old pal Willow!” I had to stop myself from using magic to just write what I was feeling. It’d be easier. The paper would absorb my feelings and I wouldn’t have to think about it.

I miss Tara.

And now I’ve made the page all blurry. Good one Will.

Let’s talk about something else.

Apparently Giles thinks I should keep talking with the folks back in Sunnydale, but I’m still not sure if I can get to the point where the pain in their voice doesn’t make me want to bury my head in the nearest mire. Oh yes diary, I’ve learn British. It’s a confuse-y language – so many words are the same, but they’re used different. The other day I think I offended Giles when I expressed my frustration. So I’m staying out of the word wars for now.

Anyways, Sunnydale folks and I haven’t been chatting. I mean, I’ve only been here a short while, so it’s not like they should be calling. If they wanted to. So it was surprising when Dawn called up and said that Fred wanted my email address. Of course, when I got Fred’s email I knew why it was so important. I asked Giles what to do, and he said I could give Fred some suggestions, but to leave the magic to Wesley. Fred’s been kind of evasivey about Wesley’s help — I think I sensed some tension there when I went to tell them about Buffy. Maybe Fred doesn’t understnd Britishisms either. Or it might be the Watcher stare. I’ve been getting a lot of that stare lately.

Anyways, I hope they find Angel soon, but you know it’s not the first time he’s gone missing. He always seems to pop up again. He’s a big vampire, he can take care of himself. Fred wanted to invite Buffy out to LA, but given their history, I told her that might not be a good idea.

So my life line to home is emails to a girl I hardly know, it’s not much, but with how I feel I’m clinging on to them like this pen… hopefully we all can work it out.

The reason I have to introduce myself is become I’m brand new around these parts. Yep, Angel Between the Lines is my first step into the Between the Lines network, and more than that, my first foray into podcasting! That’s right, this will be the first time my voice enters the podcasting universe (although Steve Eley did read one of my comments aloud on an episode of Escape Pod which made me way too giddy for my own good), and I couldn’t be happier about it.

See, I got started late on this whole scene in general, so when I got my Zune 80 for my birthday in February of ’08 and decided to see what the hubbub was about, I went berserk. I have far too many podcast subscriptions than I have time to listen to, leading to epic internal battles over which shows to get hopelessly addicted to this week and then, after catching up, which other show to obsess over while the other ones start filling right back up again. It’s an endless, thankless, stressful task with no pay or health benefits to speak of. But I don’t care, because I’m loving it. It’s opened me up to great viewpoints from fascinating people, and wonderful sources of fiction from all sorts of incredibly talented authors. And getting to listen to the same voices every week really makes you feel like you know these people personally. So this community is one I’ve embraced on a pretty personal level and have really wanted to become a part of. Who doesn’t like a little bit of internet immortality, right?

In the case of Angel Between the Lines, I saw a Tweet for an open casting call in March and figured, “what the heck?” I have a decent microphone, I’ve got Audacity, it’s not like I’m a stranger to voice recording (but more on that later), and it just sounds like fun. So off I went, lines recorded and submitted, and next thing I know I’m cast in the role of Groo! Now how cool is that? [very, in case you’re a little slow]

So far it’s kind of a kick. I had only just begun to listen to Buffy Between the Lines when this all started, so I’m just getting into how this all works, but in the meantime I’m loving the behind-the-scenes. I’ll be getting to flex a few creative muscles I didn’t know I had (actually, my fingers are crossed that they’re even there), and working with a really amazing team of people who seem to be having a blast putting this all together. What more could I ask for? Okay, that’s a stupid question, because right now you’re probably imagining all sorts of drastically more lucrative and awe-inspiring desires that I could have requested, but I’m just not that greedy, okay? I asked for this, I got it, and I’m happy with that. …also, the Oompa Loompas never made it through immigration, and the millions of dollars in unexpected inheritance hasn’t arrived yet from Nigeria.

Now for a little background on me: One of the reasons I was drawn to this at all is because I’m not exactly inexperienced when it comes to performing. In fact, I was a professional actor for the vast majority of my life! And I’m uniquely and doubly qualified for my involvement here. As a kid, I did endless work in voiceover, playing roles in many cartoons (some of which people have actually heard of!), radio commercials, dubbing over the lines of kids who mumbled too much in major motion pictures, etc., so I know all of the ropes. But I also have a more direct connection, as I both read for an episode of Angel, and was cast shortly thereafter in an episode of Buffy, where I was interrogated and intimidated by the Slayer, herself! Having been a fan of the show (and Joss in general), it was an exciting moment to say the least. So that feeling of personal connection to the Buffyverse ensured that I had to get involved here when the opportunity arose. One taste of being a part of this legacy just isn’t enough. Plus it gave me a totally unnecessary excuse to re-watch Angel.

So that’s my mildly-entertaining introduction. Should the Senior Partners see fit, you’ll hopefully be hearing more from me as the production progresses. If not, just look around in all the typical hangouts, and odds are you’ll see TurboFool lurking somewhere in the shadows, writing overly-wordy rants nobody reads.

I have had a really stupid day today! And I mean stupid!

Firstly my “Dad” has disappeared along with his “girlfriend” and I’m supposed to be all upset that he’s gone. Why should I? He does this all the time. F and G, the people my father works with were all mopey and sending emails to anyone they could think of. Dad’s like a cat. I’m sure if we leave the door open, he’ll drift back in at some point. Really, I’m surprised they haven’t got me putting up posters. “Have you seen this man? Warning: He bites”.

But I was worried about C, Dad’s girl. I know she can take care herself but Los Angles isn’t the safest place.

So, I went to look for her. I asked some people, checked the dumpsters, that kind of thing, but no luck. The others thought they could help but they just started kicking at bins and talking to bums. They were slowing me down. And all that time she could be lying in an alley somewhere. Bleeding. Alone… I don’t want to think about it.

Finally, I got a chance to go by myself. I work a lot better when I don’t have the two lovebirds tweeting away all the time.

After helping with a bit of redecorating in exchange for some information, I went to look in Chinatown. Strange smells and people shouting. Full of people with nothing to say but a strange need to just talk at you. This sort of people would make you buy a “one of a kind, very rare” bottle which you see twenty of behind the curtains.

After looking in thirteen different places I finally ended up in a Chinese restaurant. The second I walk in, the girl behind the desk is all over me. “You cute! You like my big eyes?” It was sickening really. I just wanted some information not some “sweet or spicy” bimbo. I didn’t want a date especially not with the likes of her.

And I told her in frank terms that I wasn’t interested and that she could stop trying. I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. But somehow she took offense.

Women! Horny women!

That came out wrong. Or did it? I’m leaving it in.

Okay. Fine. Maybe I was rude but I… I know some men would like the fact she had a… it really doesn’t matter. I wasn’t interested. I can’t believe everyone’s angry with me!

Whatever.

I got back to the hotel empty handed apart from some incense to find out the others had also failed. Not that I was expecting much. And what had they done? They had ordered Chinese! Why not? I truly believe they do it to annoy me.

(I think F was drunk. She was talking A LOT and giggling but she does that anyway. It’s her “thing”.)

So we ate and I had to watch them. Of course they can’t eat food like normal people Oh no, they have to hold it up to each other’s mouths and steal little kisses here and there. And the rubbing. Oh the rubbing!

That said, the food was pretty good. I mean, I’ve had better, but it was alright.

Then, I was just sitting in my chair, full of fats and chemicals, when I noticed the table was starting to grow.

Of course I knew that a table had no right to be growing, so I braced myself for trouble.

Next thing I knew there were food cartons the size of houses and that puddle of dim sun sauce I had spilt earlier was a lake. If you want to be put off duck pancakes just have a river of the sauce flow past you. The smell is hideous. And I spend time in sewers!

But it seems that certain people are unused to shrinking and F started babbling AGAIN!

Holtz told me that it used to be that the only suitable time to strike a woman was when she was in hysterics. I thought about giving her at most a tap to stop her talking about cows.

Instead of this, G just stroked her hair like she was a horse and whispered sweet nothings in her ear.

And I simply pointed out that there was a good chance we were stuck like this.

Oh but that really set F off bawling. And it was all, “Don’t upset her. She’s very sensitive!” I swear he treats her like an animal.

Speaking of animals, G got defensive and tried to attack like he was the big dog.

Then I might have overreacted and tried to attack him with a chopstick.

But that’s beside the point. I mean, they dodged. AND I helped find the hand written message in the fortune cookie! So, really, I saved the day!

After much turning of paper (and people getting hit by spoons. That was pretty funny) we found that Little Miss Horny was the cause of all this.

“You belittle me? Ha! Now you be little!”

Women! Stupid punning demonic women!

It’s the whole literal genie thing that demons have going for them! You ask for a drink of water and they pour it on the floor because you didn’t ask for a cup. I hate that.

Look, I’m going to keep coming back to this. I simply tell a girl I don’t like her and then it becomes this big life threatening thing. I’ll give you most things with us become life threatening but it’s still not my fault. Fully.

So after I left them to babble, the lovers had came up with a brilliant idea. We had to climb the counter to do some reading.

Oh, but of course we did. That was the most sensible idea we could have come up with in the situation. A climb. Full marks! Do have a point!

For the record, while everyone is pointing fingers at me, I’d like to point out I caught F when she fell off the table. I didn’t have to. I could have let her fall on her skinny behind. But I didn’t. So there was no need to call me names. Whatever.

And when the run from table to counter couldn’t have gotten more fun, the door blew openned wide and Horny stepped inside.

So it was a quick sprint and clamber (the sort of thing I used to do before breakfast) and we were on the counter.

We stood there watching the chow mein being trampled into the carpet while F scanned the book.

After some very careful page turning it seemed the tea we ordered really was “old family recipe” and could bring us back.

Deus ex tea. Which was lucky. I wanted a Coke.

F couldn’t help but shout about how smart she was for finding out the answer which nicely gave away our location to the scorned girl. She came stomping over all ready to squash us.

So we shot her with a crossbow.

Like you do.

Nothing like a little pain to make one change one’s tune. Suddenly she was so apologetic and weepy. But I ignored this and helped F get back to the table and the spilt tea.

The river of tea had joined Lake Dim Sun which made it a less than pleasant drink. Again, I’ve had worse.

So, it seems that all of this could have been averted if I had just gone on a date with Jade or whatever her name was. She span quite the sob story about how young and innocent she was (Never been kissed!) and how she never wanted to hurt us and she would have never done it if I had told her she had eyes like a seal or something. Stupid girl.

After Jade had been bandaged up and put in a taxi F tried to sit me down. She held my hand and gave me the talk on how I should act around people or things that are different to me. How I mustn’t tar a race or species just because their distant cousins once tried to rip out my lungs.

When she saw I wasn’t really appreciating her efforts, she went off to get a flipchart and marker pens. I just snuck up to my room while her back was turned. I am ninja.

But today was…Stupid! It’s all just so…

I have a headache.

I’m going for a walk. Carnival’s in town. I want to see the guy’s face when I beat his game with those blunt darts.

Mindless violence.

That should cheer me up.

After two seasons of success with Buffy Between the Lines, why shift towards the fine (and in some cases, not so fine) folk of Los Angeles? It all returns to Between the Lines Studios’ central purpose – to answer the unanswered questions of the Whedonverse. BBtL covered lots of these plot points, from the large to the small. Each season of BBtL covered an especially important question: the first season answered how the Scoobies dealt with Buffy’s death at the end of the series’ fifth season and what led them to the decision to resurrect her at the beginning of the sixth. The second season also dealt with Buffy’s absence, this time her time “on the lam” between the series’ seasons two and three – both for Buffy in Los Angeles and the Scoobies back in Sunnydale. With the official “season eight” comics, the major plot holes seemed to be settled for Buffy and the Scoobies – but what of our friends at Angel Investigations (and of our antagonists at Wolfram & Hart)?

Season three of Angel ends with a shocking series of cliffhangers – including betrayals and the (unrelated) disappearances of both Angel and Cordelia. While a significant plot of Angel’s fourth season is the search for Cordy, strangely almost no screen time is dedicated to the search for the titular hero of the series. Season three ends with Angel missing, seemingly without trace. Season four opens with an exiled Wesley holding the key to Angel’s rescue. But how did our favorite rogue demon hunter come to find that key? How did the other characters deal with Angel and Cordy’s absence? Now, those are plot holes that needs to be answered – and that’s where Tabz, Kim and the rest of the ABtL crew come in.

Angel Between the Lines is an audio drama that takes place between the seasons of Angel the TV show. We have a cast/crew from all around the world (so you do NOT need to be in Los Angeles to audition). There are many roles that we’re casting (not just the ones that we have audition lines for). We also need some different dialects and accents – so please make sure to try out if you’re in any way interested.
