It was a beautiful day, the sun had risen, the birds were singing and Mary Duffy went to heaven.

Mary Margaret Duffy was born Nov. 12, 1947 to Frank and Margaret (Reh) Duffy — “her angel”. As a longtime Shawnee resident, Mary spent her early years at home with her loving family. In 1977 Johnson County began a program for developmentally disabled adults. Formal education was not available for special needs at that time and through JCDS Mary was given the opportunity to grow and work with other adults in a safe environment.

Mary was employed by Johnson County Developmental Supports for over 36 years. She had an excellent work ethic and went to work every day until recently, when her disability prevented her from attending. She was honored in 2005 with an award from JCDS for over 25 years of service.

Mary loved music, her ‘tunes’, especially the Beatles, and knew the words to all of the popular songs. She loved to sing and dance and enjoyed playing her dad’s acoustic guitar. She was always ready for the party, especially family gatherings!

Mary loved her family, all things pink, her birthday, Christmas, crossword puzzles, paint by numbers, and her dog Taco Duffy.

If you wanted to get Mary’s attention, all you had to do was mention a cup of coffee, Zarda Barbecue, or Red Lobster, and she was ready to go.

Mary lived with her family at home until her mothers’ passing in 2005. She then had the opportunity to live in two exceptional group homes, one in Olathe, KS and more recently in Merriam, KS where she began care with Hospice.

Mary is survived by her sister Sharon Duffy Stasi and her brother-in-law Rick Stasi, her nephew Adam Stasi, his wife Amanda, and great niece Kinley Ann. Also surviving are her niece Allison Stasi Nigro and husband Michael, and great nephew Benjamin, and soon to be new baby Nigro.

Mary was a bright spot in many lives. She was blessed with many friends and a family who loved her.

The family wishes to thank all of Mary’s caregivers and staff members who helped her achieve and live a full, happy and productive life, with unparalleled devotion, dedication and love. We acknowledge the entire staff of JCDS, the house staff of 154th in Olathe, the staff of Mackey House in Merriam, and the caregivers of KC Hospice.

Visitation and Funeral Mass

The celebration of Mary’s life will take place Friday, May 17, 2013 at St. Joseph Church, 11311 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66216. The visitation will begin at 9:30 am with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00.

Memorial Contributions

Please omit flowers and kindly honor Mary’s memory with donations to Friends of JCDS, 10501 Lackman Road Lenexa, KS 66219 – or Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 100, KCMO 64114.

R. (Ronald) Nicholas Pflumm, 54, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was born on June 27, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ronald H. and Ardyn Allison Pflumm and baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church on July 20, 1958.

Nick was a great and generous man with the world’s most contagious laugh; it made you happy just to hear him. He will be greatly missed by his loving family: wife Donna, daughter Ashley Pflumm, son Matthew (Jessica) Pflumm and granddaughter Phoebe Pflumm. Stepsons: Steven (Sarah) Ohmes, Jeffrey (Jill Glass) Ohmes, Step grandchildren Lexi, Kylie and Natalie Ohmes and Val Hayes. Parents Ronald (Dee) Pflumm and Ardyn (Rick) Erickson, Sister Lauri Guidry and Brother Garot (Marisol) Pflumm. In-Laws Kathy (Mike) Evans, Philip (Terri) Thelen, Bernadette (Dave) Farra and Mother-in-law Mary Thelen. Stepsiblings: Sheri Gallagher, Tammy, Drew and Lance Wood, Elizabeth Erickson and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, co-workers and friends.

Nick was preceded in death by his sister Allison K. Gudikunst, infant grandson Isaac Pflumm, infant nephew Ricardo Pflumm, father-in-law Donald Thelen, Sr. and brother-in-law Donald Thelen, Jr.

Nick began his 38 year career of banking working for his father Ron Pflumm, Uncle Bud Pflumm and Grandfather Clarence Pflumm, at their family owned bank “The Shawnee State Bank” in the Bookkeeping/Customer Service Department. He went on to work at the “Lenexa State Bank” as a Branch Manager. Returning to “The Shawnee State Bank” he followed in the footsteps of his Grandfather Clarence – 5th President, Uncle Bud – 6th Presidents, Father Ron – 7th Presidents and Nick as the 8th and final President of ‘The Shawnee State Bank.” Commerce Bank, NA bought the SSB and Nick was Regional Bank President until Ray Glassnapp hired Nick to work at First National Bank of Olathe where he was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Enterprise Bank acquired FNBO and Nick worked there briefly. Jim Lewis hired Nick to work Security Bank of Kansas City where Nick enjoyed working as Senior Vice President and Senior Commercial Loan Officer. Nick loved banking and helping people.

Nick enjoyed spending time with his wife, relaxing at home or at the lake; fishing, boating, swimming, wave running or just sitting on his deck reading, watching the boats, people and ducks go by. Nick also loved hunting, reading about history, spending time with family, coaching his children and grandchildren in sports: basketball, volleyball, baseball and soft ball. He also loved working in his yard, watering, seeding and killing moles.

Customers and co-workers alike have many stories over the years about Nick working to help start a business, keep businesses going, making loans, working with builders, and his new employee hiring technique, he asked questions that made him see what was in a person’s heart, he didn’t put much interest in resumes or the way a person looked. He even hired a man in Spain to come to FNBO just by interviewing him on the phone. Nick never referred to staff as employees or you work for me, he always referred to them as co-workers. If you made a mistake Nick said to learn from it and don’t do it again. If there was something that you really believed in as a solution to a problem he would spend one of his “silver bullets” to back you up. He would “never hang out one of his co-workers to dry by themselves” he was always behind them and he tried to call everyone by name and motivate co-workers to their fullest potential.

Nick was very proud to have been a Shawnee Fire Department Volunteer/Lieutenant and Shawnee Fire & Rescue Department Volunteer/Emergency Medical Technician. Nick was currently on the boards of: Shawnee Mission Medical Center Foundation, Shawnee Planning Commission, Shawnee Downtown Partnership Revitalization Committee and the Shawnee Economic Development Council.

Nick was a Paul Harris Fellow Award Recipient from The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International; he was twice named “Banker of the Year” by readers of the Shawnee Journal Herald, voted 2003 “Citizen of the Year” by the Shawnee Area Chamber of Commerce. He has been past Chairman of the Board for the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, Shawnee Economic Development Council, Shawnee Convention & Visitors Bureau and Catholic Education Foundation, National Association of Real Estate Appraisers, Kansas Licensed Real Estate Appraiser, American Institute of Banking, Shawnee Medical Center/Tiny Tim Sponsorship Committee, Johnson County Rotary Club, Johnson County Girls Athletic Association/Board of Directors, Bishop Miege High School Booster Club, Shawnee Mission Northwest Booster Club, St. Thomas Aquinas Blue & Gold Club, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, Safari International, Junior Achievement Instructor, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School/Career Class Instructor and Shawnee Jaycees.

Nick attended Rockhurst High School, Blue Valley High School, Johnson County Community College/Banking Courses, Appraisal Courses American Institute of Banking Courses, University of Kansas, William Jewell College, Real Estate Appraisal Classes for the State of Kansas/License, Johnson County Community College/Emergency Medical Technician Training & License and 2007 Graduate of BAI Graduate School of Retail Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.

Erma L. Stous, 97, went to her heavenly home, May 9, 2013, at Lakeview Village, Lenexa, Kansas.

Erma was born in Holton, Kansas, on August 20, 1915, to Earl and Mary (Prinz) Snyder. She graduated from Holton High School in 1934 and attended Stricker’s Business College in Topeka, Kansas. After graduating, she began her profession as a stenograph secretary with several companies, including the Civil Service, The Lee Company and Allstate Insurance in Kansas City. She retired in 1980, which allowed her to spend more time in their garden. She belonged to several garden clubs and enjoyed flower arranging.

Erma married her high school sweetheart, John M. Stous on November 22, 1941, in Holton and enjoyed 67 years together. They moved to the Prairie Village area in 1944. They traveled widely in the U.S. and Europe and made many friends while square dancing and playing bridge. John and Erma were very active members of the former Meyer Boulevard United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

Erma and John moved to Lakeview Village in 1999. John passed away May 9, 2008, and Erma was able to stay in their independent living apartment there until recent months. She worshiped at the Lakeview Chapel. Erma was on the Lakeview Resident Council for several years. She was an avid reader and volunteered at the Lakeview Library where she enjoyed visiting with customers. Erma continued to play bridge as often as possible. She enjoyed theater productions at Johnson County Community College and The New Theater and occasional trips to Branson.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John. She is survived by nephews, Bill Haag, Steve Stous; nieces, Marian Clinkenbeard and Betsy Abernathy; great newphews, great nieces, cousins and a host of friends who were an important part of her “family”.
