Bharat moving to become manufacturing hub - Long march is needed, very long

There has been discussions going on that Bharat has to move along from Services based industry to manufacturing and become a manufacturing hub given the vibrant young population. The reality of the ground is different. The attitude of the youth joining labour force and the society at large are not so conducive. The people got used to either political freebies or used the posh life styles of high paid services jobs. Now attracting the academically qualified people for the manufacturing job (not skilled) is a herculian task.

Well! It’s indeed a long march for us to move from services to manufacturing.

A BE (mech) guy prefers to take calls during night at a call centre than work in Indian Railways at the age of 24/25. When at 40 with call centre dumping this comparably stiffly fella for a cost effective, on the ball gen z++ dude, it dawns upon that dullard that he has a mech background. At that age starting from sq1 needs courage not only from the employer, yet the guy needs balls himself.

Such is our labour situation today. The question what do you know elicits silence with a helpless stare in most folks, than a fumble at the least.

Almost 90% of the folks ready to join labour force have cognitive bias of the highest order coupled with a disrespect to elders in the society and seniors at work, as they are brought up to believe their blood is blue by their incorrigibly irresponsible parents.

When one of my professors told civil engineering will be the next oil 10 years ago he was branded nitwit behind his back. When I believed in his words and repeated I was called a mental boomer uncle. Now the professor with his team of students innovates while educating them and minting patents. The ones who mocked him and chose the running horse called IT, are now staring at a scary future of self creating/ self correcting AI tools dodging human control.

With IT in decline and high paying MNC companies undertake pay corrections irrespective of industries, it’s either upskill or cross skill and be ready to take job at decent pay to survive. Perishing is much painful than learning.

On 30th January 1948, Nathuram Godse shot M K Gandhi from point-blank range. Gandhi died on spot. Indian state punished Godse for that and hanged him for killing a person who had advocated for non-violence throughout his life.

However, even before Godse’s hanging, the revengeful Congressi had decided to use Gandhi’s killing as a justification for the Chitpavan Brahmin massacre in Maharashtra.

The massacre started from Mumbai. Hours after Gandhi was killed, a wave of violence swept over whole Maharashtra. Chitpavan Brahmins, the class of Brahmins to which Nathuram Godse belonged were the main targets of groups committing violence.

For the next 4 to 5 days, Chitpavan Brahmins were subject to Mughalesque era killings, rapes, and lootings from Congressis in collusion with anti-Brahmin groups.

Social Justice means fair action in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities and privileges within a society. We have a galaxy of religious leaders, Saints and a council of social /political leaders who have been striving for suitable changes time and again since time immemorial. We have many glorious references in Tamil religious texts about social justice being administered through societal change initiated by a Saint or by Divine intervention as and when need had arisen.

EV Ramasamy, anointed as Periyar (Great man) by the Dravidian movement, had not been great by any means whereas mean by all means. It is one of the inveterate imbecilities of the beast on the roam in TamilNadu, dravidian stock, to hold high this anti-social as father of Tamil people.

The recent visit of Saudi Arabian Crown Price Mohamed Bin Salman (MBS) to Pakistan and his promises there about billions of dollars worth of investments is, in some quarters of the society, sending conflicting signals as Saudi had earlier gave Pakistan a meager amount in aid and left it off with a mammoth debt. Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan had, as mocked by his own country's media and the world, has gone on a tour with a begging bowl to the Arab nations. He has also gone to China with the bowl, of course after carefully emptying it at Islamabad. China too has not been so magnanimous to Khan.

First off it was an ironic site to see the flamboyant Imran Khan, a former cricketer and a heftily wealthy man, to be seen begging at places where he had earlier used to flash his wealth and unleash lavishness. Of course China has no cricketing history nor has it a history of promoting tourism. So, Khan's flamboyance is not known in China except for intelligence inputs.Read more »

I will tell you a little story. You have heard the eloquent speaker who has just finished say, "Let us cease from abusing each other," and he was very sorry that there should be always so much variance.

But I think I should tell you a story that would illustrate the cause of this variance. A frog lived in a well. It had lived there for a long time. It was born there and brought up there, and yet was a little, small frog. Of course the evolutionists were not there then to tell us whether the frog lost its eyes or not but, for our story's sake, we must take it for granted that it had its eyes, and that it every day cleansed the water of all the worms and bacilli that lived in it with an energy that would do credit to our modern bacteriologists. In this way it went on and became a little sleek and fat. Well, one day another frog that lived in the sea came and fell into the well.

"Where are you from?"

"I am from the sea."

That has been the difficulty all the while.

I am a Hindu. I am sitting in my own little well and thinking that the whole world is my little well. The Christians sit in their little well and think the whole world is their well. The Muslims sit in their little well and think that is the whole world. I have to thank you of America for the great attempt you are making to break down the barriers of this little world of ours, and hope that, in the future, the Lord will help you to accomplish your purpose.

Sisters and Brothers of America,

It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world. I thank you in the name of the mother of religions, and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.

My thanks also to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration but we accept all religions as true.

I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation.

I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, and which is every day repeated by millions of human beings:

As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which people take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.

The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita:

Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach them; all are struggling through paths which in the end lead to Me.

Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

The world is too small to allow even a tiny part of it to step towards skepticism and melancholia. Economic impact would be disastrous at far off regions from the affected places due to intricate dependencies. Political impact would also be a reality thanks to Social Media and spread of information. Can't afford to discount the effects of religious discourses of fundamentalist nature. When somebody of a religion is punched in a brawl in Africa, the 'religious brethren' get up in the arms throughout the rest of the world or a mass media campaign of alleged persecution is launched worldwide.

Electioneering is part and parcel of democracy. In any democratic set-up there would be campaigning aimed at wooing the electorate to vote for a candidate by exhibiting the track record of the incumbent and the vision of the opponent. But all electioneering would be carefully crafted to ensure a patriotic and caring picture of the candidates are pasted for the view of the electorate. Boasting and emotional appeal of nationalism and patriotic fervor would be inevitable in such election campaigns. But the electioneering in the world's largest democracy, India, has a queer irony. The incumbents boast about their anti-people activities and elaborate on how they violated the law to favor certain groups at the cost of others while the aspirants promise those groups same sort of favor with a zeal win them over.

Politics is known as the last resort of rogues. Now that we have more number of rogues, rascals and freebooters in politics is filled with them and their routine corrupt practices. Mysterious deaths are not uncommon in the political spectrum and those demises going unnoticed with passing time is also not new. In the history of independent India we have a lot of such death and few comes to mind right on thought are those of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, Mohan Kumaramangalam, Lalith Narayan Mishra, recently of Madhavrao Scindia, Rajesh Pilot, Dorjee Khandu and the list goes on.

Opinion polls serve as eye opener for some and root cause for lethargy for some in politics, especially during the run up to elections. The recent survey taken by some media houses with the help of some companies paste a picture that brings smile on the BJP supporters and makes the Modi supporters exult. The surveys predict a favourable atmosphere for BJP in 3 States going to the polls, with Rajasthan offering it a landslide victory, the Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh voters exude a feel that they will be sticking to the incumbent Government, Delhi appears to be heading for a hung Assembly. One opinion poll gives Congress a slight edge over others in Delhi and a lesser impact in Rajasthan with some gains in Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. But most of them state that it is BJP all over with Delhi giving an unclear mandate.

On 12th April, I went to Aravind Hospital and was taken to the block for in-patients. I asked for an AC room as earlier, but the AC rooms were fully occupied. So I opted for an A-Class room which was offered. The room was comfortable and two people were allowed to stay with me. I was called in for pre surgery tests at 12.10 PM and was taken into the theater at 12.30 PM. I met Dr.Usha Kim when I was waiting in the room. She advised me to relax and she will be doing the corrective surgery

My Eye Treatment - Part 1

I'm recording here, my personal experience of an eye treatment I underwent. This post is purely personal.

I had been having issues with my left eye for a couple of decades now. An accident during the past added to the woes, but it was okay to live with, as it didn't cause any pain or serious problems of any sort by the Grace of my Guru Thapas Chakravarthi Shri Bhrathee Theertha Mahaswamiji of Sringeri and my God the Great Jala Rakshaka Ayyanar of Rajapalayam. But right after the Sankranthi holidays of 2013 (mid January) I've been having an irritation in the left eye and have been continuing with some eye drops advised by my ophthalmologist. Later my dad suggested that I sit with the Ophthalmologist at Rajapalayam for finding out a permanent solution for this. The Clinic is called Shakthi Eye Hospital and Dr.Rajesh & Dr.Anitha were running it. I finally agreed with my dad to meet with this 'couple' of doctors.

The nightmares of 2009 armed conflict in SriLanka have been revived now for political reasons. Students in TamilNadu are agitating for the cause of Tamil Eelam (a separate nation demand), the welfare of the Tamils in SriLanka, Prosecution of the SriLankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, Imposition of economic sanctions on SriLanka and severing of diplomatic ties with that nation. The war and the related crimes happened four years ago. The politicians in TamilNadu especially those who hold the Eelam cause high now, were docile, dormant and inert while having all the power with them to have made an effective attempt to stop the killing of innocents. The students were also there in 2009. All were docile when people were killed and shouting after 4 years which is akin to refusing donating blood for a dying patient but crying at the cemetery years after the death.

We've been hearing a lot of lament about delayed and denied justice to the affected parties, particularly with regards to the violence happened after the Godhra train massacre in 2002, from Mr. Justice (Retd) Markandey Katju. He has earlier raised this point with a suggestion that all the scents of Arabia will not be sufficient to get rid of the bad odour of the violence. When Justice Katju faced opposition for the tenor of his essay, he was pretty determined not to listen to the other side. He has now gone over to Pakistan through it's newspapers and spoken against the Gujarat Chief Minister, probably for the convenience of a like minded audience without an iota of opposition to his views.

Mr.Justice Markandey Katju, the Chariman of the Press Council of India, is known for his legal acumen and out spoken nature. He is famous for his open mouth comment in the open court aimed at senior counsel P.P. Rao. He has been writing many articles some of those make good sense and many of those go otherwise. Of late, Justice Katju seems to have a gross contempt for his fellow countrymen and is very much open mouthed in his criticism.

Of late we've been hearing the media hullabaloo over the Delhi gang rape and other such incidents in the society. We've been wondering what has gone wrong with some of our folks? Why there is a sudden spike in such violence? Why do we have an increase in this untenable behaviour? Are we doing anything for that apart from commenting on Facebook and participating in candle light processions? Many people blame the society and the trend of the lifestyle for this and ask for a change. That is perfect. But I have a question for those folks. The panic is justifiable, since we have sisters, cousins, daughters and friends in the women folk whom we wish to be safe in the world and cannot tolerate the agony of them getting violated.

Twelfth of January every year is observed as Youth Day, since it is Swami Vivekananda's Birth day. The nation celebrates the 150th Birthday of the Swami with a situation comparably similar to that of the days of the Swamiji. In those days people were accepting that the culture of the land was inferior and the way of life needed refinement to reflect that of the European which was considered civil enough and anything that didn't have a semblance to it was termed barbaric. Macaulay, taking a mammoth step towards asserting British supremacy, summarily brushed aside the ancient scriptures of our culture with a sweep of left hand as unworthy. Did he read those and have any reason to conclude? Hardly is the answer to the first part and arrogance is the answer to the second part of the question.

It is Modi again in Gujarat. He has done it, despite the curses, opinion building, friends and foes, internal meandering etc. Modi has proved his mettle and marches ahead with victory. It was not a cake walk of course. He toiled for this victory and he deserves it. It is a hat trick for Modi and BJP in Gujarat. His leadership qualities and his communication skills are commendable. Some call it marketing gimmick. But they forget the fact that gimmickry cannot get you going for the third consecutive time with a thumping victory.

It was another Sunday (2/2/12) with the usual laziness syncing in and day was moving at a snail's pace. While watching TV, I saw some Christian function with some big wigs of the church present. It was Jaya Plus channel and they said that martyrdom was being accorded to one Devasahayam Pillai. I googled and wiki'd to figure out what role has he played in the freedom struggle. Later it turned out to be a Christian religious martyrdom. So, what does this mean to us? Pillai will be a Christian saint sooner or later. This martyrdom is the first step towards that.

Sunday normally starts with a lazy morning, my mom prodding about prayers and breakfast, dad enjoying his time with me speaking from politics to Vedanta to old time memories. One of the past Sundayas (7/10/12) was different. None was at home in the morning as parents left to home town for Navarathri. Bloody lazy day with loads of outstanding works is really a hell. But as there was no other go, started the day through that hell and was sailing through.

Contemporary politics is an idiosyncratic trade. People stay mum for allegations which would attract a tight slap in normal situations and even an attempted kill in flared up moods. An example of one such (chronic) behaviour is that of the Gandhi family, not of the Barrister from Gujarat, but of the heirs of the person to whom he lent his surname. Feroze Gandhi. There were some retorts and repartees during the times of Feroze's wife Indira and his son Rajiv. But right after Rajiv's wife Sonia Gandhi took over the family organisation i.e the Congress Party, a lot of allegations were levelled, some even make the listener think as if hurling vitriol at will were the order of the day. But not even a murmur heard against such allegations, leave alone law suits being filed.
