What Is Whitewater Rafting?
In the last 30 years, whitewater rafting has gained massive popularity. People tend to go in groups for a family gathering, friends reuniting and even corporate team building exercises. Whitewater rafting is massively fun and an undisputed adrenaline rush.

At its core, whitewater rafting is simply the act of taking a raft down through turbulent areas of a river. These turbulent areas are known as rapids. Rapids are formed by three factors – constriction, gradient and obstruction. Water naturally flows downhill because of gravity. When it is constricted, it pushes in from the sides, speeding up and getting turbulent. Speed also increases when the gradient get steeper and, of course, obstructions cause water to crash into them and swirl around as the flow tries to find the best way to follow gravity. Each of these events causes rapids and the resulting turbulence churns the water thus causing “white water.” The goal of whitewater rafting is to surf these rapids without being flipped or dragged under.

Whitewater rapids are classified by six categories. Category 1 is a smooth river with no rapids. The categories climb from their too Category 6, which is either impassible or should only be attempted by experts. Most whitewater rafting trips occur on Category 3 and 4 rapids, where the turbulence gives you an exciting ride, but with limited risk.

Whitewater rafts are typically big and sturdy. They hold between six and 12 people spread equally on each side. Although an expert guide controls the steering at the back, most rafting companies allow the passengers to paddle on each side of the raft in their corresponding spots.

Malaysia's first astronaut is set to blast off for a voyage to the International Space Station (ISS).
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor will lift off from the Baikonur site cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, together with one Russian and one US astronaut.

He will spend nine days on the space station before returning to Earth with the outgoing crew.
The launch has been eagerly anticipated in Malaysia, where it has been hailed as a landmark for the Asian nation.

The Malaysian astronaut will fly in a Russian Soyuz rocket with American Peggy Whitson, the space station's new commander, and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko.
Ms Whitson and Mr Malenchenko will remain on the station for six months, replacing two astronauts with whom Mr Shukor will return.

Ramadan rules
The 35-year-old doctor will conduct a series of scientific experiments while in space.
His visit to the station was agreed as part of Malaysia's billion-dollar purchase of Russian-made jets.
He described his mission as a "giant leap" for all Malaysians, and said he hoped to inspire his countrymen.

Mr Shukor will be the first Muslim to fly in space during the holy month of Ramadan and will be there for the Eid festival, when he will treat his crewmates to a celebratory meal.
For the rest of the time he will try and observe the dawn-to-dusk fasting rules of Ramadan.
Muslim clerics in Malaysia have prepared special guidelines for him on observing religious rules while on the ISS.

He will use a wet towel rather than water to clean himself before praying, and is not obliged to kneel in zero gravity or face Mecca while praying.
To avoid confusion about when to pray, Mr Shukor will follow the time at the launch site in Kazakhstan.

He is not the first Muslim in space - but the BBC's Andrew Harding in Bangkok says it appears that those before him have been left to work out their religious practices on their own.

Malaysia's 1st Astronaut - CNN News

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) -- A crew that includes Malaysia's first astronaut and an American who will become the first woman to command the international space station prepared Monday for blastoff later this week.

The Soyuz-FG rocket is scheduled to blast off from the Central Asian steppe on Wednesday night to take Malaysia's Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, Peggy Whitson of Beaconsfield, Iowa, and Russian Yuri Malenchenko into orbit.

During his 12-day space trip, Shukor is to study of the effects of microgravity and space radiation on cells and microbes, as well as experiments with proteins for a potential HIV vaccine.
The rocket -- adorned with a Malaysian flag and coat of arms and carrying a Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft -- was moved Monday to the launch pad from its assembly site at the Baikonur cosmodrome , which Russia rents from Kazakhstan.

"It's too exciting to be cold," said Shankini Dovaisingam, a Malaysian aerospace engineer observing the final preparations. "It's amazing to see the Malaysian flag on a Soyuz spaceship."
The mission coincides with the last days of Ramadan, the holy month when Muslims fast from dawn until sundown, but Malaysian clerics decreed that Shukor will be excused from fasting while in space.
Shukor's religion also requires that he face Mecca for prayer but clerics decided that the exact location matters only for the beginning of the prayer ritual.

Shukor, 35, will bring a "symbolic" load of Malaysian food to the space station, said Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh, a program director for the Malaysian space program.

The $25 million agreement for a Malaysian astronaut to fly to space was negotiated in 2003 along with a $900 million deal for Malaysia to buy 18 Russian fighter jets.
Shukor is to return to Earth on October 21 with two Russian members of the current space station crew.

Whitson and Malenchenko will stay on as the station's new crew, and will be joined in October by U.S. astronaut Daniel Tani, who is arriving with the shuttle Discovery. Tani will replace fellow American Clayton Anderson, who has been at the station since June.

The Malaysian dollar is the Ringgit(abbreviated to RM). It is worth 100 sen. Bank notes come in several denominations: RM1(blue), RM2(purple), RM5(green), RM10(red), RM50(bluish green) and RM100(purple). Coins come in denominations: RM1, 50sen, 20sen, 10sen, and 5sen

Nine major banks are available in Langkawi: Namely Maybank, Public Bank, RHB Bank, CIMB Bank, AM Bank, EON Bank Perwira Affin Bank, Bank Islam and Bank Simpanan Nasional. Most ATM's are linked to international banking networks such as Cirrus, Maestro and Plus and not forgetting Visa and Mastercard allowing withdrawal from overseas accounts easy. ATM's are available at the Langkawi Airport, Kuah Town . the Jetty Point Shopping Complex, Petronas Station.
License Moneychangers can be found all over the island namely: Langkawi International Airport, Jetty Point Complex, Kuah Town, Pantai Cenang, Padang Matsirat, Langkawi Fair. Banks and most hotel do provide money changing facilities.
Credit card such as American Express, Diners Club, Master Card and Visa Card are widely accepted.

Welcome to Mount Kinabalu.This site is for everyone who like mountain climbing, especially for those who are planning to climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest climber-friendly mountain in South East Asia.You will be given useful tips, relevant information and general mountain climbing guidelines to the summit of Borneo.

Mount Kinabalu is situated in the East Malaysia state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. It is the place where you could see breathtaking sunrise from above the clouds, 13,435 feet (4095 meters) above sea level. Many of the trees and flowers are unique or extremely rare but to the uninitiated novice in matters botanical there is no doubt that the pitcher plants steal the show. Even the most casual observer cannot fail to notice these impressive insect guzzling monsters with up to a pint of liquid waiting to lure and drown the passing fly or mosquito.Just above the tree line at 3350m is a comfortable rest house where most parties spend the night.

Before dawn next morning everybody is up and climbing by torchlight towards the summit. A steep rock step is aided by a fixed rope which, when we were there, continued all the way to the summit even where the way became quite flat.The rope and the compulsory guide make this now extremely unlikely even in the thickest mist. Nevertheless the early start is a good idea to enjoy the views before the regular mist descends on the summit.
The weather can change very quickly from brilliant sunshine, to mist and clouds, to a torrential down-pour.

At roughly every 1 km break, there will be a rest hut. These have toilets and also water tanks.
You do not need to carry up enormous amounts of water as you can refill at these tanks. These extend all the way to 5.5 km which is the Laban Rata Guesthouse.

Be sure to bring some food and a torch for your climb. Most people stop at Laban Rata and then continue the climb the next morning at about 2:00 a.m.Laban Rata is the first and only restaurant along the way and you can also rent sleeping bags, jackets and blankets. If you have reservations at Gunting Lagadan or Sayat-Sayat huts further up the mountain, they will bring you.

Suggestions for equipment :

1.    Rucksack with a waterproof plastic liner
2.    Waterproof jackets
3.    Several "T" shirts and a long sleeve shirt
4.    Several pairs of comfortable socks
5.    Warm sweater or jacket
6.     Ports plus a choice of tracksuit bottoms/light-weight trousers (ensure you have enough to keep warm)
7.    Neck scarf of "sweat band"
8.    Strong training shoes with a high-grip tread pattern.
9.    Torch with spare batteries and if possible, spare bulb
10.    Water bottle
11.    Toiletries including any medication you normally take
12.     Binoculars/Camera

Tips :

It is recommended that all climbers should have themselves medically checked before attempting any mountain climb. If you have a history of suffering from the following ailments, it is highly recommend that you should refrain from climbing: Hypertension, Diabetes, Palpitation, Arthritis, Heart disease, severe anemia, Peptic ulcers, Epileptic fits, Obesity (overweight), Chronic asthma, Muscular cramps, Hepatitis (jaundice); or any other disease which may hamper the climber.

Pulau Tioman is one of the most beautiful islands of Malaysia. It is located on the eastern side of the Malaysian peninsular. It has been regarded as a jewel in the sea. One early Malaysian legend claims Tioman to be a transformed dragon princess. Apparently the beautiful princess stopped enroute to Singapore from China to admire the charms of this spot. She was so pleased, so she decided to discontinue her journey, take the form of an island, and remain there as a place of shelter and comfort to passing travellers.
The island is well-known for underwater adventure, snorkelling and windsurfing. From Mersing to Tioman, you can go either by speed boat (max passenger 20) or speed ferry (max passenger 150). Alternatively you can take a ferry from Singapore or Kuantan.

The geography of Kuala Lumpur is characterized by a huge valley known as Klang Valley. The valley is bordered by the Titiwangsa Mountains in the east, several minor ranges in the north and the south and the Strait of Malacca in the west. Kuala Lumpur is a Malay term which translates to "muddy confluence" as it is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers.
Located in the center of Selangor state, Kuala Lumpur was previously under the rule of Selangor State Government. In 1974, Kuala Lumpur was separated from Selangor to form the first Federal Territory governed directly by the Malaysian Federal Government. Its location on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, which has wider flat land than the east coast, has contributed to its faster development relative to other cities in Malaysia.
