Since this movie is now available to see on Netflix I was inspired to paint the characters from the book and movie. I thought it would be fun to paint the characters and offer them for decorations for a book club. Here are the sketches.

Christian Dior Bar Suit

On February 12, 1947 Christian Dior debuted the New Look where he accentuated the waist, the volume of the hips, and emphasized the bust.

The Bar Suit was glorified by Willy Maywald's famous photograph. It was part of the New Look collection. The Suit was a cream shantung morning coat with rounded tails that closely followed the curves of the bust. The large black pleated skirt gave it a swinging gait that had not been seen before. The suit was part of his manifesto collection to bring back woman's ultra-femininity and opulence.

I was asked to paint this infamous suit for a custom portrait. Below is the portrait done in gouache paints.

Illustration Friday: Smart

Dog as Spirit Guide

I hope everyone survived the holidays and is ready for the new year. I am just now resurfacing after the holiday travels and it feels great to be back in the studio again. Last year was a year full of travels and discovery.
Last year I had come across the pictures of dogs that were celebrated and honored in Nepal in their Kukur Tihar Festival. The festival that celebrates dogs and their undying devotion and love for man takes place in Nepal every year, on the second day of Tihar, the country’s autumnal religious celebrations.

Based on the Hindu celebration of Diwali, Tihar is the Nepalese version of this religious festival, where people gather to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, of knowledge over ignorance and the worshiping of all living beings, especially dogs!
Dogs have a are marked with a tika on their heads and are dressed with a garland called malla. On this festive day where dogs are honored and worshiped, all of our furry friends are offered delicious treats by their fellow human beings and songs and dances take place in their honor.

Yudhishthira, the King of Righteousness, is shown here refusing to enter heaven without his dog.

In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Yudhishthira was the eldest son of King Pandu and Queen Kunti and the king of Indraprastha and later of Hastinapura (Kuru). He was the leader of the successful Pandava side in the Kurukshetra War. At the end of the epic, he ascended to heaven.
At the end of the epic, Yudhishthira and brothers and wife, accompanied by a dog, made their final journey of pilgrimage to the Himalayas. While climbing the peaks, his brothers and wife fell to their deaths, dragged down by the weight of their guilt for their sins. As it happens, Yudhishthira had to answer every time Bhima asked him the reason for his wife and brothers' fall. But he did not even look back to help any of them which seemed very cruel to Bhima. This was because Yudhishthira knew that the time to leave Earthly ties had come and he needed to focus his mind. Yudhishthira was the only one to reach the mountain peak in his mortal body, because he was unblemished by sin or untruth. On reaching the top, Indra asked him to abandon the dog before entering the Heaven. But Yudhishthira refused to do so, citing the dog's unflinching loyalty as a reason. It turned out that the dog was his god-father Dharma in disguise. The incident symbolized that dharma follows you till the end.

So after seeing this pictures of the festival, reading both the above epic of Yudhishthira and an excerpt of Jean Houston's book Mystical Dogs: Animals as Guides to our Inner Life, I was inspired to paint some dogs with mallas. I decided to pick the 10 most popular dogs in the U.S. on a list I found from the American Kennel Club. If you want to see all of my paintings they are available in my shop.

My Heart is Full // Paraguay

I took a special family trip for a couple of weeks to Paraguay and Brazil. I had not been back to Paraguay in about 8 years. I decided to take this trip with my parents since it had been 12 years since my father had gone to visit his family. Both of my parents were born and raised in Paraguay so it was a treat to see my extended family. I knew that it would be a special trip since he planned to collect information about his family to write the family history. I was able to meet relatives I had never met before and hear interesting stories about the family.
In our down time I was able to sneak out and go to downtown Asuncion and purchase some artisanal handcrafts. Here are some pictures from shopping at La Recova and downtown close to Plaza de los Heroes. There are outdoor street vendors on Palma St between Iturbi and 14 de Mayo streets. La Recova has several shops on the outside corridor as well as inside in the larger warehouse style building. The outside walkway has a series of large white arches, so it is a very recognizable building.

Red cotton dress with encaje ju The encaje ju is originally from Spain, in guaraní it means “Fabric of Needles”. It consist of a textile embroidered with very thin threads, over a frame. There exists many different types of embroidery, each one with different motifs: flowers, stars, geometric shapes, etc.

I did not get a chance to also visit the town Luque in Paraguay to expand my collection of sterling silver artisan filigree jewelry. I did find these 2 incredible hand wrapped filigree rings though at La Recova.

Going back to Paraguay was like reawakening a part of me that had been dormant for many years. I enjoyed reconnecting with my family and roots. I will not let another 8 years pass before going down again. After all family is the most important thing in the world.

I always love seeing the haute couture shows and the incredible fashions that come down the runway. For the Fall 2015 season I selected 6 of my favorites to illustrate. I used watercolor paints, pencil, micron pen and a black prismacolor pencil to do the illustrations. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I loved doing them!

Orange Fabric Decisions

As a spring vacation is quickly approaching I have been staring at a piece of fabric that I purchased a while back. I have never really quite made a decision as to either make a skirt or dress out of the fabulous fabric. It is a gorgeous muted orange doodles fabric begging to be cut. :) I was inspired by both the fabric and one of Altuzarra's looks for Spring 2015.

I decided that if I did a fashion illustration of both options I would be able to easily decide. Well I was wrong. Here is my fashion illustration that I did hoping to solve my dilemma.

I posted this illustration on my facebook page and got an overwhelming response of dress. Only problem was that I did not have enough fabric for the dress as I had hoped. I ended up making the skirt instead and I absolutely love it! I would have made a similar skirt to Altuzarra's pencil skirt with buttons but buttons are not my friend. So what do you guys think? Should I have made the dress? I'll post pictures of the finished skirt later this week.

If I really want an orange print dress, I could always cheat and get Motel's high neck shift dress.

Crafty Girls Painting

Hello everyone I just completed a watercolor painting I have called Crafty Girls. I was inspired by a group I occasionally meet with. The girls that go have never met before but love to do arts and crafts. There are girls from all ages that come and share their talents with the group. Every time we get together another girl is able to share snippets of their life story. It reminds me of the movie called How to Make an American Quilt .
If you have never seen this movie before it is definitely a must see.
Took me several days to complete this painting and I'd like to share with you the process of the painting.

Custom Fashion Illustration of the Winner

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday. Now I am sure everyone is gearing up for the Christmas Holidays. Lots of gift planning going on.

Last month I decided to do a little gift giving myself by doing a custom portrait fashion illustration of a lucky winner. That lucky winner was Stefunny! Becoming a Working Artist

I have been busy and forgotten to post here on the blog so ill share a couple of things with you all.

I took the class by Lisa Congden called Becoming a Working Artist on Creative Live. She is an artist that I have been following online via her blog and instagram account. She recently wrote a great book called Art Inc.

In this book she talks about the many ways you can earn a living by making art—through illustration, licensing, fine art sales, print sales, teaching, and beyond. It is a great class and a great book for the budding artist.
While taking the class I have also been working on my fabric designs and illustrations.

I have also been working on some fashion illustrations to add to my portfolio. I always have a great time styling the girls in high fashion outfits.

This fashion illustration was inspired by Rustic Moon 13's bone leather boho Bag. I styled this girl in Key Man Design's Clementine leather shoes, 13 Threads's green tunic wool dress and Amaria rosary necklace.

The fashionista in this Pink in the City is wearing a St. John Knit jacket, Bottega Veneta Roma Leggero Tote bag, and Alejandro Ingelmo lace up point toe pumps.

In this fashion illustration I featured a Gucci leather belted jacket, skirt of a fabric design I am currently designing, Luchesse Milla alligator 4" stacked heel boots. This illustration is was inspired by the boots that we saw at Kemo Sabe in Las Vegas last week. This store has some incredible products and the customer service is amazing. We spent some time getting educated on various products such as William Henry's amazing knives and the amazing Luchesse Milla boots.

This particular image was inspired by the Gucci leopard print tote. I have included a Smythe jacket, Gucci scarf and Gucci studded boots.

Learning to do Surface Design

Earlier this year I search the internet for videos to teach me how to use illustrator to create repeating patterns for surface design. I did not study graphic design in school and it has been something I have been interested in the past few years. I dabbled with adobe illustrator this year with a couple of fabric designs I have in Spoonflower but was incredibly frustrated that I lacked the skills. Last week Bonnie Christine who is a surface designer was on the Creativelive last week teaching everything see learned on her own to do repeat patterns. This is the class and it is well worth purchasing if you are interested in surface design.

So all this week I have taking that class and attempting to do my next fabric design on illustrator. It has been so much fun! I was so excited that this class was offered!

A Peek into the Studio

Here is a peek into the studio this week. I'll start with showing off my self portrait. This is definitely one of the more difficult illustrations I did this week but I am pleased with it. I love the fact that I can can just imagine myself wearing the lastest fashion. I especially love the Valentino bag I snuck in there. Maybe one day..... :) I also went ahead and designed my own custom notecards.

This last illustration is of my first boss at Neiman Marcus. She is the ultimate personal shopper, Betty Lidji, at the flagship store in Dallas. Her customer service to her clients is top notch. I learned from the best! I know she will enjoy writing to her fabulous clients with her personalized notecards. :)

Custom Watercolor Fashion Illustrations

Perfect Hostess Gift

I have been a bit busy the past few weeks with family and have not been able to post any new projects. A week ago we stayed at our family's house in Los Angeles for a long weekend. On the way back I decided to create a custom watercolor notecard for our amazing hostess.

Here are the sketches and the final painting.

I then scanned the watercolor and created the notecard on photoshop. Put the order in for the notecards and now just waiting for them to ship. So excited to see how they look once they come in from the printers.

First Fabric Design

I took a break from drawing girlfriends these past two weeks and decided to tackle designing fabric. It has been a project I have been wanting to do for a while now. I was inspired by a photograph that Anthropologie posted in their instagram of Mara Ferreira on her blog.

The hat Mara was wearing inspired me to sketch and watercolor an image of her wearing some Amaria earrings. The girl in the hat then inspired me to watercolor a seashell, and the mother of pearl earrings and pearl necklace. I then decided to design a fabric combining all the watercolors and came up with my first fabric design available at Spoonflower called Lady at the Beach.

I am pretty excited about this first fabric design and have already been working on the second one with a Moroccan theme. I hope to have it up and approved by next week!

Wine Tasting in Napa

A couple of weeks ago I went to Napa for the first time. It was truly a magical experience. The very first winery we stopped at had a group of girlfriends that were there for a bachlorette weekend. I really wish I would have captured the moment. They were all dolled up in their colorful maxi dress and the backdrop of the winery was stunning. I have had this image of them in my mind for the last couple of weeks and have been itching to sketch them.

So this week I decided to illustrate three girlfriends wine tasting in Napa. Here is my process....
