Jedermann (Everyman) by now has become synonymous with the Salzburg Festival. Its first showing also marked the birth of the Salzburg Festival. This year, Nicolas Ofczarek will repeat his last year’s excellent performance of the Jedermann.

Historic Jedermann

On August 22nd 1920, the Salzburg Festival was officially “born”, when Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s stage play Jedermann was first staged on the Domplatz in Salzburg, a location that has greatly contributed to Jedermann’s success.

Even Hugo von Hofmannsthal himself was raving, deeply impressed by the way that the Cathedral square, the fortress and the play interacted with each other. So there isn’t any better location to see the Jedermann than in Salzburg. The town’s baroque scenery and the Salzburg Cathedral are perfectly complimenting the play’s events.

Jedermann: the Story

Jedermann (Everyman) embodies the rich and reckless man who has turned from God. Death is sent out to Jedermann to bring him to God’s justice. But nobody wants to accompany him to bear witness to his good deeds. It is Belief alone that leads Jedermann back to God and a religious life.

Current Jedermann

Since 2010, Christian Stückl has been directing a new Jedermann production. Controversial actor Ben Becker will again hit the stage as Death, while Nicolas Ofczarek returns as Jedermann.

Those of you who have been to Salzburg already might still remember the ‘Salzburger Schnurlregen’ (string rain) from their own experience. But where does this somewhat odd name hail from? And why does this weather phenomenon mainly hit Salzburg? We have the answers and a couple of waterproof tips for those rainy days in Salzburg.

What the Schnurlregen really is? Let us translate …

Imagine a sunny day, suddenly drenched by a lashing shower that is so powerful that you can’t make out any more drops but only a wall of water – that’s the Salzburg Schnurlregen. It usually not only comes splashing down but also up and sideways. But don’t worry, most times, it only lasts for a couple of minutes. Then the sun comes back out, pretending nothing happened.

But why does Schnurlregen especially occur in Salzburg?

Salzburg is situated on the northern edge of the Alps, which is the preferred ‘habitat’ of the Schnurlregen phenomenon. Both location and warm fall winds further promote the development of infamous ‘Schnurlregen’.

What to do on Rainy Days

Should one of your holidays fall prey to rain, don’t worry. We have plenty of waterproof tips for you:

Visit the museum: Nobody really feels like spending a sunny summer day in a museum, right?. That makes Schnurlregen a godsend, as there are more than enough exciting and interesting museums in Salzburg.

Treat yourself to a visit at the Coffee House: Austria is famous for its coffee houses. One of the oldest is Café Tomaselli, which is open to guests for 150 years already.

Go shopping at the Designer Outlet: Make the most out of a rainy day on a shopping spree for Salzburg souveniers. Maybe a nice umbrella?

Cuddle up with a great book: Wet day? Snuggle up in our cosy library, make your pick among the great choice of books and enjoy.

Slowly, the long winter is retreating back into the mountains, making way for spring. Salzburg is a tourist magnet during every season.

Experience the unique atmosphere of the town and discover all the beauty that the World Heritage Site Salzburg has to offer. Soak up the first warming rays of sun while undertaking one of many charming city walks.

A Walk Over the Monchsberg

Thanks to its beautiful trails, Monchsberg offers plenty of delightful views of the town.

Start your city walk from the Augustine Monastary (next to the Mulln parish church). Stairs and little trails lead you pu to the ‘Augustiner Schanze’ which was created by Archbishop Paris Lodron. The idyllic Appollo Terrace allows a first view of Salzburg. After that, the trail diverges along the eastern scarp faces of the Monchsberg. After 10 minutes you reach the „Museum der Moderne“.

Once you reach the viewing platform, the town literally lies at your feet. Continue to walk a bit and you will arrive at the ‘Stadtalm’, another site with a unique view of the houses and towers of Salzburg’s old town. Continue to the Siegmundstor, which was erected in 1767, and enjoy the view of the Rainberg, which was one of the oldest settlements during the Younger Stone Age.

After passing the Kuppelwieserschlossl, the trail diverges towards the Richterhohe, which also is a fortification with a view of the southern Salzburg basin. On your way back to the Hohensalzburg fortress you pass the Monchsberg water tank and its water exhibition. You can reach the Hohensalzburg fortress within a couple of minutes from then on, passing the Schartentor.

A Salzburg Landmark: Hohensalzburg Fortress

Hohensalzburg Fortress is over 900 years old, the largest intact fortress in Central Europe and Salzburg’s signature landmark. High above the towers of baroque Salzburg, her famous silhouette presides the old town ensemble.

It is a must-see for everyone visiting Salzburg. It is so exciting to experience every nook of the site, to take a rest in the fortress’ inner ward and take in the view of Salzburg’s south city.

Located directly in the centre of Salzburg’s new town, you can find the so-called “Zwergerlgarten” (dwarf garden). Europe’s oldest dwarf garden is part of the baroque Mirabell Garden. It lies just an easy stroll away from the Mirabell Garden underground car park.

Home to Salzburg’s Dwarfs

Forming a circle under a batch of ancient trees, all of the dwarfs are made from Untersberg marble. They are a commanding sight in this unique part of the park, which was built by the prince archbishop in 1715. In 1692, the first dwarves had been sculpted. The dwarf garden is contributing strongly to the overall symbolism of the Mirabell Garden.

Quite a few of the dwarfs are depicting real people but not all of them were short-highted themselves. The dwarfs’ clothes come from various countries and social backgrounds. A dwarf in Turkish garments, for instance, reminds of the Turkish invasion, ridiculing the unsuccessful Ottomans.

Unfortunately, today’s dwarf garden is missing several statues, which disappeard after the secularization of Salzburg in the 19th century.

The dwarf garden is a great place to visit with kids, who love discovering one statue after the other and to mimick the dwarfs’ poses .

Interesting fact: Some scenes of the “Sound of Music” were also filmed in the Salzburg dwarf garden.

Where it All Began … the Von Trapp Villa in Salzburg

The former home of the famous singing Von Trapps is situated along Traunstrasse in Salzburg’s Aigen district, not far from the Aigen Church.

It was planned and constructed by the reknown Salzburg Architect Valentin Ceconi (1827 – 1888) and orginially was named „Villa Walburga“. Nowadays, the Von Trapp Villa is a listed building.

In 1833, Salzburg’s former governor Raimund Reichsgraf von Lamberg obtained and rebuilt the villa for his Family. Lamberg’s grandson, Georg Ritter von Trapp, took over the villa complete with its inhouse chapel in 1923.

Life in the Von Trapp Villa

The Von Trapp villa was home to the family up until they made their escape into the US in 1938. The adjoining park and farm made it easy for the family and their servants to be self-sufficient. For many years, Johanna Raudaschl was the family cook at the Von Trapps. Her recipes for delights like date macaroons, “convent crescents” and more were collected by her granddaughter and are now available as the cook book „The Sound of Cooking“.

After the Von Trapps …

1939 brought dark times to the Von Trapp villa, when SS-Leader Heinrich Himmler seized, redid and even partly destroyed the house. For instance, the inhouse chapel was turned into a drinking hall. Himmler never was officially registered as the owner of the house, though, and so it staid in Von Trapp ownership, before a congregation of missionaries took it over.

In 2010, a planned hotel and museum project stirred a lot of emotions. The plans were quashed after many of the villa’s neighbours protested. And so, the Von Trapp villa stays a hidden gem for Salzburg’s visitors.
