Six nationally-renowned legal scholars, including Harvard Law School’s Professor Annette Gordon-Reed, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in History, the 2008 National Book Award for Non-Fiction, and a MacArthur ‘Genius’ grant in 2010, will be in Hawai‘i during January to teach special courses at the William S. Richardson School of Law.

Gordon-Reed, who was also awarded a 2009 National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama, is the 2013 Frank Boas Visiting Harvard Professor. Boas, a generous supporter of the Law School, annually sponsors one visiting Harvard professor each January Term (J-Term.) The Wallace S. Fujiyama Distinguished Visiting Professor Fund supports many of the other J-Term professors.

The general public has a unique opportunity to hear nationally- renowned scholars during five free public events beginning the week of January 7 at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai‘i. The events are planned as part of J-Term – which includes short intensive seminars in January by outstanding visiting scholars.

On Monday, January 14, from 4:30-6 p.m. in CR2, Prof. Jerome Cohen of New York University School of Law will discuss China’s criminal justice system, reflecting in particular on the escape from house arrest last April of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng.

Cohen played a key role in the negotiations that enabled Chen to come to the U.S., deflecting a potentially damaging diplomatic crisis on the eve of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s visit to China.

The other public events include:

One of the most outspoken critics of the high cost of American legal education has praise for the University of Hawai‘i’s William S. Richardson School of Law, noting that UH has managed to keep tuition increases “modest” while offering an excellent education.
Brian Tamanaha, the author of “Failing Law Schools,” and one of the most vociferous voices raising concerns about the spiking cost of American law schools, puts the UH Law School in a contrasting high-quality category, calling it one of about two dozen “excellent” state law schools that continue to charge tuition below $20,000 a year.
In a recent talk for law school faculty, staff, and students at the Richardson School of Law, Tamanaha noted: “On a purely economic basis, the Law Schools that have been modest in tuition increases – those that charge below $20,000 – can keep debt at $60,000 (for graduates of the three-year program) and that’s manageable debt.

Foreign correspondent and environmental activist Anthony Aalto will suggest that the HART rail project could actually help protect O‘ahu’s environment on Tuesday, November 27, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room at the William S. Richardson School of Law on the University of Hawai‘i campus.

Aalto’s presentation – “To Keep the Country, Country … Make the City More City” – will look at the Honolulu rail project in a new light. Aalto is chair of the Sierra Club O‘ahu Group and he has also served as a foreign correspondent for a wide number of media outlets including The Guardian, The Economist, and the BBC.

Most recently he was Pacific Rim Correspondent for Expresso of Portugal. He is currently filming a TV series for Oceanic Time Warner, to be called “My Green Hale – How I built the Greenest House in Hawai‘i.”
