IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING MEDICATIONS

Dear Junior Term Parents,

In addition to our other closing day information, we’d like to make certain that you are aware of our Medications Retrieval Policy. If you brought any medication to Camp for your son, you must stop by the left porch of the Offices to collect your son’s medications from our Nursing Staff. Please note that this is a change from last year. We made this change to ensure that medications are secure and your son’s privacy is protected while leaving camp. Thank you for your help with this.

Alpine Father Son – Save the Date

2009 Campers and dads mark down April 16 – 18, 2010 on your calendars. Our annual Father Son weekend is set for then. It’s always a blast for boys to remember the fun times had on Lookout Mountain, show their dads all they love about camp, and look forward to next summer.

Registration info will be mailed out after the new year. Space is always limited so get that application right back to us.

Alpine Headed to the Big D!

Carter and I fly out Thursday to Dallas, TX for our first 2010 Alpine Slide Show. Thursday night, September 17th, at 7PM. We can’t wait to be at the Boyd’s home, see many familiar faces, and meet new families who are interested in Alpine. If you are in the Dallas area and are interested in Alpine, please come. Bully Burgers without Bully

It’s really quiet around camp now that the summer of 2009 is over. We miss camp and all the fun sights and sounds we had here just only a week ago. We did have an official Bully Burger pool cookout (even though Bully has gone back to school) last night. Mr. O grilled out hamburgers and all the Alpine and Desoto full time staff had a fun swim. At the party were Peter and Stuart Hurt, their sister Sarah Hurt, and their parents Phil and Marsha Hurt, who operate Camp Desoto. Also there were Weldon Pless, his fiance, Corynne Ware, Mr. and Mrs. O, Caroline, Virginia, Carter, and myself.

We know many of you are busy with football or other sports workouts. We’ll be thinking about you as you get ready to go back to school. Work hard and remember what you’ve learned on the Mountain. Take the Mountain to your school and your friends. Staring school in the face, I bet there are a lot of you out there who would go for one more game of Slaughterball! Guess that will have to wait until next year.

Speaking of next year, today we mailed out the 2010 Earlybird cards that you signed at the end of camp, indicating you’d like to return next summer. Please talk this over with your parents and get them mailed back in to us as soon as possible. We want to save your spot before we offer spots to new campers and fill up camp. Your parents need to mail back the card by September 15th with their signature and a registration fee.

Hope to see you next summer on Lookout Mountain! Have a great school year.

Bob Ditter

Our counselors are priveleged each summer to sit under the instruction of senior level clinical social worker Bob Ditter during our 9 day staff training. Ditter is widely considered the foremost expert on children and summer camps. He maintains a clinical psychotherapy practice in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a nationally sought after speaker, trainer, and consultant who has consulted for Disney, the American Camp Association, and the YMCA. He has appeared on The Today Show, ABC Evening News, and Good Morning America. Sports Illustrated has called him “camping’s most articulate spokesman”.

Most recently he has written a piece for PBS called “Getting Your Child Ready for Camp“. It is a great article with very practical advice about going off to camp. Bob has lots of other great information on his website and blog.

Bob has been a great friend to Alpine and our family over the years and we are grateful for his contributions to camp.

The Birthday Monkey Visits Montgomery

Many boys wait 11 months to see their camp friends again, but this Spring, Birmingham camper Trey Lockett got a big surprise. When his mother asked him how he wanted to celebrate his birthday, he said he’d really like to have dinner with some camp friends from Birmingham, Montgomery, and Greenville.

He was just wishing out loud, not expecting it to really happen, but his mother ran with it. She secretly contacted his friends and arranged a surprise birthday dinner in Montgomery. After his sister’s soccer game in Alabaster, Trey’s dad met them by the interstate with Russell Galloway in tow. Russell distracted Trey all the way to Montgomery, so that he didn’t even realize they weren’t headed back to Birmingham. They drove up to Chili’s, and Fox Carlson, Duncan Blackwell, John Coleman Poole, and George Sellers were waiting inside.

Trey was surprised, and the boys were so excited to catch up, eat a meal together, and swap camp stories. These campers have grown up together at Alpine, and when you see them talking, it is hard to believe that they only see each other for one month every year. We can’t wait to see Trey, Russell, Fox, Duncan, John Coleman, and George coming back through the front gate for First Term. Thanks for sending in pictures!

my husband and i each had positive experiences at summer camps and i as a counselor. giving this opportunity to our kids is a high value to us because we know the life changing potential it holds. we know about many camps in many states and we think that alpine is the best of the best. the directors’ are intentional a/b the spiritual, physical, social and character development of each camper under the influences of carefully selected staff and counselors who seek to live out their faith in Jesus in all of life.

our son can’t wait to return to camp (and we can’t wait for him to get away from everyday life & technology here) and have another incredible experience growing and having fun!
