Sn0wBreeze, the unoffical port of the Dev Teams PwnageTool for Windows, has got it’s first video showing of how it works plus all the features it includes. In other words, they have finished it and it’s only a matter of time untill they release it!

I’m loving the DROID phone more and more each day.

I came home from a party with some friends last night less than an hour ago.  I walked in and took a quick look at the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle, only to see a gigantic advertisement for Google’s DROID phone.  And the campaign is only getting bigger.

I was watching the MLB World Series each night, simply because it’s an end of the season game between two teams, and that’s always fun to watch.  As I was watching I saw a peculiar advertisement.  A group of fighter jets in formation, that began to drop these enclosed balls down towards earth.  People on the surface of the planet began to watch as they touched down.  Two cowboys began to walk up to one, as it opened up to reveal the DROID phone.  Shortly thereafter, the text “Drop date: 11-06-09″ appeared on the screen, followed by the Google and Verison Wireless logos.  Each pane must’ve been on the screen for less than a second, just barely enough for the human mind to process.  Below is the ad as shown during the World Series.

As for this morning, I was simply amazed at what Google had done to put the word out on the phone.  There was a large chunk of text on the inside portion of the ad, four page into the newspaper, which really puts things straight:

This is a world of “nope.” “Nuh-uh.” And “sorry, Charlie.”

A world of smiling denial. Petty tyrannies that have made their way into our cell phones. Into the very way we choose to speak to another human being. There are dozens of doesn’ts. Doesn’t allow customization. Doesn’t run multiple apps. Doesn’t allow you to swap out batteries. Doesn’t allow open development. These arrogant little devices are barely worth more than the pocket lint they rest upon. Because now there’s a phone so smart. So strong. So subservient to its user, it refuses to include “doesn’t” in its dictionary app.

Demo it. Ogle it. Own it.

Justin Herman Plaza?  That’s right outside the San Francisco Ferry Building, and on the night where I did take the ferry back home from the city I saw that demo center, closed down because it was 7pm.  It was a small demo center, probably could hold 10 demo phones depending on how it was set up.  There’s demo centers like these all around metropolitan cities in America, the biggest being Times Square.

According to the DROID website, “DROID does Times Square.”  The square is covered with DROID advertisements, and there’s one that is giving people an opportunity to call in from their cell phone and search like DROID.  Using just their voice, they can say what they want to look for on Google Maps, and on the big jumbo screen advertisement, the last four digits of their number will appear, as well as a general map of their results.

Verizon and Google are going all out.  The World Series, four entire newspaper pages, demo centers, and huge ads in Times Square?  This is direct and absolute competition with the iPhone, although none of their ads mention the iPhone at all, and talk mostly about “compromise” and that all other phones are a bunch of “doesn’t”, whereas DROID can do anything.  But is it worth all the hype?

I’m going to stop by the demo center at Justin Herman Plaza sometime this week after school, and I’ll be there to let you know how this new DROID phone really does next to a jailbroken iPod touch.  A full review and comparative review will be up later this week.

After all the scare with the SSH hackers going on, many people have finally realized the importance on changing your default SSH password. Therefore, to aid these people, we have decided to post this guide teaching users how to change their default SSH password.

How to change the default SSH Password:

For this guide, you are going to need MobileTerminal (download it from Cydia):

1. Open the MobileTerminal Application on your device:
   
2. Type in ’su root’ and click enter:
   
3. It will ask for the password so type in ‘alpine’ which is the default password:
   
4. Type in ‘passwd’ and click enter:
   
5. It will ask for a new password (more than 5 characters) so type it in:
   
6. It wil ask your to retype the password:
   

You have now changed your SSH password and protected your iPhone from the SSH hackers!

After news of the Dutch hacker changing your background making it as if he has taken over your device and demands 5 euros in exchange for regaining the control of your device, more people have decided to take advantage of this hole is jailbroken devices and spreading worms throughout the community.

This time, it’s a guy called Ikee who spreads the worm and ‘rickrolls’ users by changing their background as well.

I’m guessing a few phones hit a range that another vulnerable phone was on.

[09:15] <JD> Well that was my next question: Why does it only seem to be hitting Optus here and Overseas (I was presuming from screenshots I’ve seen)… So you’re saying the Optus network is more vulnerable due to it not using NAT?
[09:17] <ikee> I don’t think it was an Optus fault (Being an Optus user I quite like the fact i can access my iPhone services from the outside world), I think it was mainly the fault of people being to lazy to change their passwords (It only takes a couple of seconds guys) and I hope this taught a few people that.

[09:32] <ikee> Ahh that was a quirk of my bad coding, the ‘virus’ itself has 4 variations and the first variation would resend its LockBackground.jpg to the victim. I did not comprehend that the infector might have not rebooted their phone after changing the LockBackground to something else (Causing them to send their changed lockbackground instead of Mr Astley)
[09:36] <JD> So it’s the same virus, but now containing a picture of someone’s loved one?
[09:37] <ikee> Yeah, that was definitely not the intended effect.

My first intention was to change the root/mobile password to random strings, then embed the strings into the LockBackground. Unfortunately passwd uses a tty (and not stdin) for its new password:request (similar to ssh logins, which is why you might find sshpass in /bin/, i had to port it) so to stop the phone getting infected over and over again (and

[09:57] <ikee> It is a lot more hidden, a think most phones tend to be more secured now so it should die pretty fast. It is a little more malicious it tampers with some Cydia files.
[10:01] <JD> Do Android users risk being infected? I’m guessing that the virus would only log in as root:alpine (the default root username and password for the iPhone OS IIRC)
[10:02] <ikee> AFAIK no unless a user decided to use the same passwords, Although there is a weird quirk I read about dropbear in Android allowing any password (A bug with libcrypt I believe) but I could be very wrong.

The only way to prevent these attacks is to change the default password of SSH after you install it. Eventually hackers will find a worse way to attack devices using this exploit so change your passwords now!

Developer have found a way to add a dislike button to Facebook unofficially using a Firefox plugin called ‘Facebook Dislike Button’.

It may not be perfect as  only users who have the Dislike plugin installed on their Firefox browser can see the ‘dislike’ but if everyone starts using it it will work so SPREAD THE WORD!

Here’s a wierd Facebook trick that was posted by Amaan. It’s a pointless yet interesting easter egg that the Facebook developers have added into the website. With a simply combination on the keyboard, you will get bubbles showing up (like the sunlight through glass) everywhere you click on the website.

The combination you need to do is:

UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, ENTER

Then you should see the bubbles. To deactivate it, simply log off and in again.

I wonder if there are any other Facebook tricks like this? Anyone know of any?

I have always had the Rock.app program on my iPhone as I am a big users of RockYourPhone’s Intelliscreen application but up until now, I haven’t really had a good look at it.

But after using it for a day, checking out all the different features, I’m starting to think that maybe Rock is actually better than Cydia. Here’s why.

We all hate the fact that Cydia keeps ‘Reloading Data’. It takes forever and is always doing. It’s a huge hasle and time waster. Rock on the other hand does not have this problem at all. Rock is smooth, fast and has many more features than Cydia does.

The great thing about Rock is that it uses the same sources as Cydia ie any sources added through Cydia will also be added onto the Rock app. This means you can get all the same apps, plus more, with Rock. What I mean by ‘plus more’ is that you can also access all the apps created by the RockYourPhone team (the team that created the Rock app) such as Intelliscreen and MyWii.

However my favorite feature is reviews and ratings. Users can write  a short review (much like in the AppStore) about every app and can also add a 5-star rating if they wish. Because of these reviews, it then has a Most Popular and Highest rated pages as well which is helpful as well.

But Remember….

All I’m saying is that you should go out and see what else is available. Most people will never have used anything but Cydia and I would strongly recommend to try out Rock (and the others) and see if you like it better (I do). So, what do you use?

After the news boom that happened after we announced the N64iPhone emulator was coming soon, Zodttd has decided to release some more details to clarify and try and stop some of the confusion about the emulator for things like how you are going to control your charactor when there isn’t even space on the screen for all those buttons.

Here are the details he released:

• N64iphone is for jailbroken iPhone’s & iPod Touches only. It will officially support iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen’s though I will enable it to work on all Apple device’s as soon as I can.
• The N64iphone project is absolutely free. I will not charge for this software, as it is based on others work.
• I’m not sure how well it will perform just yet. Performance is less a worry than controls though.
• I will be taking recommendations for control schemes for N64iphone. Most likely two areas will be needed for analogs which you use your thumbs for. One small dpad, and the digital buttons will be needed in the overlay as well. So far expect each side to have controls on them in landscape. The middle of the screen will have the N64 screen with correct aspect ratio.
• I will be testing N64iphone with an iControlPad.
• There is no exact release date yet for N64iphone.

He has also said that once the emulator is compiled, he will be releasing videos of it working. Can’t wait to see this up and running!

The folks over at iControlPad have unveiled the newest edition of their control pad for the iPhone and iPod Touch which gives buttons to the device allow it to become the ultimate gaming machine. The newest edition includes an internal battery to stop the controlpad from draining the devices battery.

Sadly there is no release date of any kind and I get the feeling that it is still not near completion as the team said:

Back in Febuary we had a test run of Ipads made in the design we went with at the time – we shipped them out to some selected people and asked for feedback over a couple of months.

What we got back was interesting, the design worked but obviously needed to be altered for each type of iPhone and the controls were a bit cramped, plus it was quite large to carry.

We were not 100% happy with this. If we are going to do this we want to do it right.

As some of you know we have access to the parts used on the openPandora handheld – which has dual analogue nubs.

A sleepless night then resulted a huge design change.

I have just made the jump from OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 on the iPhone 3GS and encountered an error that when I did some research seems to be affecting quite a few users out there. This is the ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop that you suffer when you try and restore a backup of your phone onto your recently restored iPhone.

This is not only relating the the OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 jump but can happen to everyone on any firmware but regardless, we have a fix that works on any firmware.

The fix in itself is quite simply but was found by chance by Willius on Apple’s very own support forums.

All it involves is that when you do encounter the dreaded ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop and it isn’t progressing from that for a while, you simply need to unplug your iPhone, close iTunes fully (best done by CTRL+ALT+DELETE and stopping iTunes.exe’s process) and then pluging in your device once again.

The ‘Restore in Progress’ screen should appear on your device and after some minutes of this, all your backuped data will be back on your device.

Apple have officially started their battle against the jaibreaking community which grows every day. They have posted a new job section on their website which is clearly aimed at making the jailbreak a more dificult process trying to put people off jailbreaking their devices.

Some of you may be wondering why Apple are so keen on stopping users jailbreak their devices. It is purely that the piracy of applications and games from the AppStore is skyrocketing (one app had a piracy rate of %95). Because of the simplicity of the jailbreaing tool it allows pretty much anyone to jailbreak their device and take advantage of all the cracked app circulating the internet.

The new job that was posted on Apple’s website is called the ‘iPhone OS Platform Security Manager’ and as ModMyI says, aka ‘jailbreaking cop’.

It was always known that Apple have been trying to stop jailbreaking (even tried to make it illegal but failed) but it was only know when they have officially posted some information which clearly shows they are trying to stop jailbreaking for ever

I just saw this thing on iPhoneFreakz and was completely amazing by it. It’s a dock and speaker for the iPhone and iPod Touch which is called ‘The Wall of Sound’.

As you can see from the iPod Nano in the bottom corner, it’s HUGE!

The speaker system itself costs 102 kilos and is 125cm long and 95cm wide. Plus if you want it, it’s going to you $4,500.

Something like this seems pointless to me and wouldn’t raise many sales and yet, the first edition is already completely sold out. However, if you want it you can pre-order the second wave of them from HERE.

Google have released Google Dashboard in an effort to help users get a overall view of all the notifications/updates from all the different Google products such as Gmail, YouTube, WebHistory plus more.

It’s fully customizable and is actually pretty useful.

Adobe have officially announced that Flash is definately NOT coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch. However, as they state in the message above, it is not their fault. It’s Apple’s.

Apple restricts use of technologies required by products like Flash Player. Until Apple eliminates these restrictions, Adobe cannot provide Flash Player for the iPhone or iPod Touch.

In other words, Abode are fully keen and seems to have the means to put Flash on the iPhone and iPod Touch browser but because of Apple’s mega-strict restrictions, they are not allowed to release it.

OK, I’ve seen that not every computer is working perfectly with Karmic. Including the MSI Wind U100. I tried the netbook remix, but there are a few problems.

Firstly, after my computer starts up, the brightness flashes. It takes a couple minuites for it to stop, and when it stops, it looks normal. But it isn’t. Hibernating does not work, and I have no USB support at all. However, it works perfectly with my HP DV4000. So read about the possible bugs related to your computer before upgrading.
