In other words, they have finished it and it’s only a matter of time untill they release it!

The ETA of the application is mid-November. They have also added a FAQ on their website answering some of the questions their fans were asking:

1) What is sn0wbreeze?
sn0wbreeze is a port of PwnageTool to Windows, which was originally made for Mac OS X.
2) Is sn0wbreeze a unlock for the Baseband 05.11.07???
No. For that go HERE
3) What devices does sn0wbreeze work for?
The iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G[S] (Only if Jailbroken on 3.0), iPod Touch 1G, and iPod Touch 2G.
4) Will this jailbreak the 3G[S] running 3.1 (Out of the box)?
No, However! GeoHot did start a new project called “blackra1n” --> HERE
5) Will this Jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G running 3.1 (Out of the Box)?
No, Arm7 Exploit is gone, because the iPod Touch, wants a Signed iBSS.
6) Will sn0wbreeze Upgrade My Baseband?
No, infact, sn0wbreeze Will NOT even give you the option to permit a baseband upgrade!
7) What does sn0wbreeze exactly do?
sn0wbreeze will create a Custom IPSW for your device, used to restore with iTunes. sn0wbreeze can customize your ipsw, to have the Partition Size, (How much space you can have reserved for Cydia), Hacktivation Option, Custom Boot/Recovery Images, and more to come!
Will this be For Mac/Linux Too?
There is already a Mac Version called “PwnageTool” (Which we are porting), and Why should there be a linux version? Theres no Linux iTunes! Damn Apple!
9) I’m Jailbroken on 3.0.1 by using redsn0w. Will sn0wbreeze work for me if I go to 3.1? Will I keep all of my Apps?
Yes, sn0wbreeze will upgrade you to 3.1 (Jailbroken), but, unfortunatly, when restoring it has to format everything because it has to re-partition the Phone (So you will need to re-install all your Apps).
10) Can I still use Unauthorized Internet Tethering on 3.1? (e.g AT&T)
You cannot use unauthorized Internet Tethering on 3.1, unless it is approved by your carrier. You can use third party software, such as: iModem when it is jailbroken!

I came home from a party with some friends last night less than an hour ago. I walked in and took a quick look at the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle, only to see a gigantic advertisement for Google’s DROID phone. And the campaign is only getting bigger.

I was watching the MLB World Series each night, simply because it’s an end of the season game between two teams, and that’s always fun to watch. As I was watching I saw a peculiar advertisement. A group of fighter jets in formation, that began to drop these enclosed balls down towards earth. People on the surface of the planet began to watch as they touched down. Two cowboys began to walk up to one, as it opened up to reveal the DROID phone. Shortly thereafter, the text “Drop date: 11-06-09″ appeared on the screen, followed by the Google and Verison Wireless logos. Each pane must’ve been on the screen for less than a second, just barely enough for the human mind to process. Below is the ad as shown during the World Series.

As for this morning, I was simply amazed at what Google had done to put the word out on the phone. There was a large chunk of text on the inside portion of the ad, four page into the newspaper, which really puts things straight:

This is a world of “nope.” “Nuh-uh.” And “sorry, Charlie.”

A world of smiling denial. Petty tyrannies that have made their way into our cell phones. Into the very way we choose to speak to another human being. There are dozens of doesn’ts. Doesn’t allow customization. Doesn’t run multiple apps. Doesn’t allow you to swap out batteries. Doesn’t allow open development. These arrogant little devices are barely worth more than the pocket lint they rest upon. Because now there’s a phone so smart. So strong. So subservient to its user, it refuses to include “doesn’t” in its dictionary app.

Demo it. Ogle it. Own it.

Visit DROID Nation to experience t for yourself. Today at Justin Herman Plaza. Or visit any Verizon Wireless communications store to find out more.

In a world of doesn’t.

DROID DOES.

Justin Herman Plaza? That’s right outside the San Francisco Ferry Building, and on the night where I did take the ferry back home from the city I saw that demo center, closed down because it was 7pm. It was a small demo center, probably could hold 10 demo phones depending on how it was set up. There’s demo centers like these all around metropolitan cities in America, the biggest being Times Square.

According to the DROID website, “DROID does Times Square.” The square is covered with DROID advertisements, and there’s one that is giving people an opportunity to call in from their cell phone and search like DROID. Using just their voice, they can say what they want to look for on Google Maps, and on the big jumbo screen advertisement, the last four digits of their number will appear, as well as a general map of their results.

Verizon and Google are going all out. The World Series, four entire newspaper pages, demo centers, and huge ads in Times Square? This is direct and absolute competition with the iPhone, although none of their ads mention the iPhone at all, and talk mostly about “compromise” and that all other phones are a bunch of “doesn’t”, whereas DROID can do anything. But is it worth all the hype?

I’m going to stop by the demo center at Justin Herman Plaza sometime this week after school, and I’ll be there to let you know how this new DROID phone really does next to a jailbroken iPod touch. A full review and comparative review will be up later this week.

Oh, and if you were wondering, no, you can’t search Apple Store in Times Square, however Verizon Wireless worked perfectly well:

This time, it’s a guy called Ikee who spreads the worm and ‘rickrolls’ users by changing their background as well.

Plus we have posted an interview with the hacker who explains why and how he did it.

The instructions on how to get rid of it is included in the below interview (via):

[09:02] <JD> Hi ikee Thanks for joining me
[09:02] <ikee> nps
[09:03] <JD> Now, as you’re well aware, you wrote a virus that is infecting many iPhones in Australia. I guess the real question to start with is why?
[09:04] <ikee> First i was curious to how far something like this would actually spread, i think what most people were unaware of is the fact it IS a worm and every phone that got infected with it was spreading it (I initially only infected 3 phones when I woke up i checked google and found out a fair few people were hit with it)
[09:05] <ikee> Secondly i was quite amazed by the number of people who didn’t RTFM and change their default passwords.
[09:07] <JD> How far did you expect it to spread, exactly?
[09:08] <ikee> Well i didn’t think that many people would have not changed their passwords I was expecting to see maybe 10~ or so people, at first I was not even going to add the replicate/worm code but it was a learning experience and i got a tad carried away
[09:11] <JD> Are you aware that it has even started to replicate itself overseas?
[09:13] <ikee> I heard a few stories about it, that would have been sheer luck, the code itself is set to firstly scan the 3G IP range the phone is on, then Optus/Vodafone/Telstra’s IP Ranges (I think the reason Optus got hit so hard is because the other 2 are NAT’d) then a random 20 IP ranges. I’m guessing a few phones hit a range that another vulnerable phone was on.
[09:14] <ikee> (From another country)
[09:15] <JD> Well that was my next question: Why does it only seem to be hitting Optus here and Overseas (I was presuming from screenshots I’ve seen)… So you’re saying the Optus network is more vulnerable due to it not using NAT?
[09:17] <ikee> I don’t think it was an Optus fault (Being an Optus user I quite like the fact i can access my iPhone services from the outside world), I think it was mainly the fault of people being to lazy to change their passwords (It only takes a couple of seconds guys) and I hope this taught a few people that.
[09:18] <JD> So do you know exactly how many people are currently infected with the “ikee virus”?
[09:20] <ikee> I can only confirm how many my phone infected alone, which was 100+ phones. I think most of them fixed it (AND I’M HOPING THEY CHANGED THEIR PASSWORDS.)
[09:21] <JD> So your major defense seems to be that people left themselves vulnerable, Do you steal stuff from people’s houses if they leave the backdoor open?
[09:24] <ikee> I’ll answer your question with two questions, Have you ever used unprotected Wifi? and Technically I did not steal anything, have you ever littered on someone else’s property? (Smokers will definitely associate )
[09:25] <JD> Ok, I suppose I can personally admit to both of them, but it seems alot more to me like vandalism than littering, which isn’t something I would do
[09:27] <ikee> Personally I would class littering as vandalism (They definitely don’t want your rubbish there). I admit I probably pissed of a few people, but it was all in good fun (well ok for me anyway)
[09:30] <JD> So that explains why you decided to use Rick Astley. In my research, I’ve been reading about a similar virus (it seems) that contains a picture of an ‘asian child’ – I havn’t seen screenshots of this, but that’s how it is described. Are you also responsible for the “Asian Child virus”?
[09:32] <ikee> Ahh that was a quirk of my bad coding, the ‘virus’ itself has 4 variations and the first variation would resend its LockBackground.jpg to the victim. I did not comprehend that the infector might have not rebooted their phone after changing the LockBackground to something else (Causing them to send their changed lockbackground instead of Mr Astley)
[09:36] <JD> So it’s the same virus, but now containing a picture of someone’s loved one?
[09:37] <ikee> Yeah, that was definitely not the intended effect.
[09:39] <JD> Are you aware of the possible legal consequences of this (the ikee virus)? Are you concerned?
[09:40] <ikee> I’d like to think I’m aware, and also I highly doubt I’m in any real trouble (So no not concerned)
[09:43] <JD> James01 on Whirlpool asks: at least one person has reported being affected without a jailbreak – seems unlikely given the nature of the phone and what I have garned about the “virus” – is this possible, or are the reports unreliable/mistaken?
[09:44] <ikee> It only affects jailbroken phones, so people probably just got a little confused
[09:45] <JD> vanquish777 on Whirlpool says: What I want to know is, how did I get infected when I had SSH toggled off
[09:46] <ikee> You didn’t , My guess is you had it on and when the ‘virus’ hit, it disabled sshd so when you checked it afterwards it appeared to be off
[09:47] <JD> Which reminds me, many people have said they are no longer able to disable SSH, is this intended to make sure you can do more damage to users?
[09:50] <ikee> This was a hard bit for me to do, until i hit this the virus was not destructive at all. My first intention was to change the root/mobile password to random strings, then embed the strings into the LockBackground. Unfortunately passwd uses a tty (and not stdin) for its new password:request (similar to ssh logins, which is why you might find sshpass in /bin/, i had to port it) so to stop the phone getting infected over and over again (and
[09:50] <ikee> someone else catching on and having mischief with peoples phones) I removed SSHD (cydia reinstall will rememdy the problem)
[09:51] <ikee> (Cydia reinstall of SSH not reinstall Cydia itself)
[09:53] <JD> So you’re saying that the only harm this virus causes is the removal of the SSH Daemon, which effectively, disables the initial problem?
[09:53] <ikee> Well that and the pretty background yes
[09:54] <JD> You mentioned that there are four versions/variants, what are the differences between them?
[09:55] <ikee> Variants A-C were quite similar and the ones most people have bought up. Variant D is fair bit different, it stores its files in a completely different place and hides itself a lot more (No random plists in LaunchDaemons)
[09:56] <JD> So you’re saying that the newest variant is more hidden, is it more malicious?
[09:57] <ikee> It is a lot more hidden, a think most phones tend to be more secured now so it should die pretty fast. It is a little more malicious it tampers with some Cydia files.
[10:01] <JD> Do Android users risk being infected? I’m guessing that the virus would only log in as root:alpine (the default root username and password for the iPhone OS IIRC)
[10:02] <ikee> AFAIK no unless a user decided to use the same passwords, Although there is a weird quirk I read about dropbear in Android allowing any password (A bug with libcrypt I believe) but I could be very wrong.
[10:03] <ikee> But even if an android phone was attacked the platform differences would not allow the code to be run
[10:04] <JD> Just out of curiousity, what do you call what i’ve named the “ikee virus”?
[10:05] <ikee> Its in a folder called POC-iWorm (Proof Of Concept) but I never named it (ikee virus works!)
[10:09] <JD> You yesterday agreed to send me the source code (and removal instructions), what variant will it contain?
[10:10] <ikee> C/D whatever version you want
[10:11] <JD> How about all four? I’ll obviously be placing them online – probably Google Code or similar
[10:13] <ikee> A-C was updated so I don’t have the first 2, I forked D from C. (I don’t know if its so wise posting the code online, nefarious people that otherwise would not have had the chance could modify it to be quite destructive)
[10:14] <JD> Perhaps, But it has become quite clear that there’s a load of people that are unsecure, and if anyone wants to do anything bad enough, they are already going to know how.
[10:15] <JD> I guess i’m hoping that the jailbreak software will soon have a “enter new root password” prompt for those users that are un-aware.
[10:15] <ikee> I’ll leave the choice up to you
[10:15] <ikee> I’d love to see that
[10:16] <ikee> or even a random password generated and displayed for the user to write down
[10:17] <JD> Yes, it would be very good. I had an iPod Touch a while ago, which I “jailbroke” – admittedly I didn’t change the default password. I guess i’m just glad it’s not me.
[10:17] <JD> Do you plan on making any further variants? If so, why?
[10:18] <ikee> No, I think the point has been made
[10:18] <JD> Have you developed anything PRODUCTIVE in the iPhone world?
[10:21] <ikee> I’m not too sure what others would class productive. I do not own a MAC or run OSX (Using a linux cross compile toolchain) so it makes it abit of a challenge to develop any applications utilising the UI (I have tho -.-). I think the best program ive developed for it for me was a remote debugging library that sends debug information over the network (Using MCAST)
[10:23] <JD> Do you have anything further to add (I’m having a mental blank on questions to ask right now)
[10:26] <ikee> I hope I did not piss off many people, this was a very simple problem and has an even simplier solution. I thought it was quite funny and I hope others did too
[10:27] <JD> You mentioned infecting only three iPhones to being with, when did that happen?
[10:28] <ikee> Around 4am November 6th (Yeah I have no life)
[10:31] <JD> To confirm, other than replicating itself, adding the picture of Rick Astley, and removing the SSH Daemon, are we likely to find anything else it does?
[10:32] <ikee> Nothing, and if you’re releasing the source code people will be able to see that
[10:33] <JD> Can you please explain to me, how an infected user would remove the different versions correctly?
[10:33] <JD> by correctly, I mean completely.
[10:33] <ikee> Sure, variants A-C store files in these directories
[10:34] <ikee> /bin/poc-bbot
[10:34] <ikee> /bin/sshpass
[10:34] <ikee> /var/log/youcanbeclosertogod.jpg
[10:34] <ikee> /var/mobile/LockBackground.jpg
[10:35] <ikee> /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.ikey.bbot.plist
[10:35] <ikee> /var/lock/bbot.lock
[10:35] <ikee> using an rm (in SSH or mobile-terminal on those files will remove it)
[10:36] <ikee> then reboot the phone, change your password and reinstall SSH
[10:36] <ikee> For variant D its abit different
[10:36] <ikee> The locations are
[10:37] <ikee> /usr/libexec/cydia/startup
[10:37] <ikee> /usr/libexec/cydia/startup.so
[10:37] <ikee> /usr/libexec/cydia/startup-helper
[10:37] <ikee> /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.saurik.Cydia.Startup.plist
[10:38] <ikee> Of course cydia used these files previously so you may need to reinstall it after deleting this files
[10:38] <ikee> *these
[10:38] <JD> So the D variant overwrites system files?
[10:39] <ikee> Overwrits cydia’s files
[10:39] <ikee> *Overwrites
[10:39] <JD> Sorry, I’m not an expert at the iPhone OS
[10:39] <ikee> Neither
[10:40] <JD> So none of your versions do contain any password changing commands?
[10:40] <JD> I mean, so when I provide uninstall instructions, I can tell them to use alpine as the password ?
[10:41] <ikee> None of the code changes passwords
[10:42] <JD> Thanks for your time ikee, and I really hope you do get into developing things that are productive sometime soon.
[10:42] <ikee> me too and no problems
[10:42] <JD> Perhaps on the Android platform (Yes, I know, I’m a fanboy)
[10:42] <ikee> I just downloaded the x86 iso, so maybe
[10:43] <JD> I’ll ask you more about that after I end this logging session, Cheers

It may not be perfect as only users who have the Dislike plugin installed on their Firefox browser can see the ‘dislike’ but if everyone starts using it it will work so SPREAD THE WORD!

I have always had the Rock.app program on my iPhone as I am a big users of RockYourPhone’s Intelliscreen application but up until now, I haven’t really had a good look at it.

But after using it for a day, checking out all the different features, I’m starting to think that maybe Rock is actually better than Cydia. Here’s why.

We all hate the fact that Cydia keeps ‘Reloading Data’. It takes forever and is always doing. It’s a huge hasle and time waster. Rock on the other hand does not have this problem at all. Rock is smooth, fast and has many more features than Cydia does.

The great thing about Rock is that it uses the same sources as Cydia ie any sources added through Cydia will also be added onto the Rock app. This means you can get all the same apps, plus more, with Rock. What I mean by ‘plus more’ is that you can also access all the apps created by the RockYourPhone team (the team that created the Rock app) such as Intelliscreen and MyWii.

However my favorite feature is reviews and ratings. Users can write a short review (much like in the AppStore) about every app and can also add a 5-star rating if they wish. Because of these reviews, it then has a Most Popular and Highest rated pages as well which is helpful as well.

But Remember….

…these are not the only two apps available for you to use. There is also Kryptes and Icy. Iptolage123 from iPodTouchFans has put together some pros and cons of all the different ones that are available:

Cydia-
Pros-
-More Stable than the other two
-Works better with the apt sources
Cons-
-Slower than others
-Constantly reloading data
-One bad source and you have to restore
-Doesn’t have a good back up sytem

Icy-
Pros-
-Alot cleaner and faster than Cydia but nowhere near Rock
Cons-
-Can’t have Icy at the same time as Cydia
-Not stable at all

Rock-
Pros-
-Quicker
-The Back-up system
-Mutiple downloads at once
-The option to soft reset at exit not after you install the package
-As many packages as cydia uses same sources
-Cool UI

Cons-
-Less Stable than Cydia
-Backup has put multiple idevices in ifinte loop
-Can’t install SOME paid 3rd party apps
-Reportably installs bogus adware
-Alot of the time it is hard to add a repo

Kryptes
Pros-
Alrite UI
-Don’t HAVE to actually install it (but you can)

Cons-
-Not many stuff yet
-Mainly ringotnes mixed in with themes

All I’m saying is that you should go out and see what else is available. Most people will never have used anything but Cydia and I would strongly recommend to try out Rock (and the others) and see if you like it better (I do). So, what do you use?

Here are the details he released:

N64iphone is for jailbroken iPhone’s & iPod Touches only. It will officially support iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen’s though I will enable it to work on all Apple device’s as soon as I can.

The N64iphone project is absolutely free. I will not charge for this software, as it is based on others work.

I’m not sure how well it will perform just yet. Performance is less a worry than controls though.

I will be taking recommendations for control schemes for N64iphone. Most likely two areas will be needed for analogs which you use your thumbs for. One small dpad, and the digital buttons will be needed in the overlay as well. So far expect each side to have controls on them in landscape. The middle of the screen will have the N64 screen with correct aspect ratio.

I will be testing N64iphone with an iControlPad.

There is no exact release date yet for N64iphone.

He has also said that once the emulator is compiled, he will be releasing videos of it working. Can’t wait to see this up and running!

Sadly there is no release date of any kind and I get the feeling that it is still not near completion as the team said:

We were not 100% happy with this. If we are going to do this we want to do it right.

Here is all the details that they released on their website:

Hello everyone,

So, what happened? We vanish for months with no word. Well let me tell you a story…

Back in Febuary we had a test run of Ipads made in the design we went with at the time – we shipped them out to some selected people and asked for feedback over a couple of months.

What we got back was interesting, the design worked but obviously needed to be altered for each type of iPhone and the controls were a bit cramped, plus it was quite large to carry.

We were not 100% happy with this. If we are going to do this we want to do it right.

As some of you know we have access to the parts used on the openPandora handheld – which has dual analogue nubs.

A sleepless night then resulted a huge design change.

This is the ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop that you suffer when you try and restore a backup of your phone onto your recently restored iPhone.

This is not only relating the the OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 jump but can happen to everyone on any firmware but regardless, we have a fix that works on any firmware.

The fix in itself is quite simply but was found by chance by Willius on Apple’s very own support forums.

All it involves is that when you do encounter the dreaded ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop and it isn’t progressing from that for a while, you simply need to unplug your iPhone, close iTunes fully (best done by CTRL+ALT+DELETE and stopping iTunes.exe’s process) and then pluging in your device once again.

The ‘Restore in Progress’ screen should appear on your device and after some minutes of this, all your backuped data will be back on your device.

They have posted a new job section on their website which is clearly aimed at making the jailbreak a more dificult process trying to put people off jailbreaking their devices.

Some of you may be wondering why Apple are so keen on stopping users jailbreak their devices. It is purely that the piracy of applications and games from the AppStore is skyrocketing (one app had a piracy rate of %95). Because of the simplicity of the jailbreaing tool it allows pretty much anyone to jailbreak their device and take advantage of all the cracked app circulating the internet.

The new job that was posted on Apple’s website is called the ‘iPhone OS Platform Security Manager’ and as ModMyI says, aka ‘jailbreaking cop’.

It was always known that Apple have been trying to stop jailbreaking (even tried to make it illegal but failed) but it was only know when they have officially posted some information which clearly shows they are trying to stop jailbreaking for ever

It’s fully customizable and is actually pretty useful.

Here is the details released by Google:

In an effort to provide you with greater transparency and control over their own data, we’ve built the Google Dashboard. Designed to be simple and useful, the Dashboard summarizes data for each product that you use (when signed in to your account) and provides you direct links to control your personal settings. Today, the Dashboard covers more than 20 products and services, including Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Web History, Orkut, YouTube, Picasa, Talk, Reader, Alerts, Latitude and many more. The scale and level of detail of the Dashboard is unprecedented, and we’re delighted to be the first Internet company to offer this — and we hope it will become the standard.

Here is a video they released demonstrating the Dashboard feature:

Adobe have officially announced that Flash is definately NOT coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch.
In other words, Abode are fully keen and seems to have the means to put Flash on the iPhone and iPod Touch browser but because of Apple’s mega-strict restrictions, they are not allowed to release it.
