CLAMP Ends Tsubasa, RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE on September 30

The combined 42nd/23rd issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine is announcing on Wednesday that CLAMP will end the Tsubasa, RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE manga in the next issue on September 30. The regular and deluxe editions for the 28th and final compiled Tsubasa book volume, as well as the second original art collection for the series, will ship simultaneously on November 17. Along with xxxHOLiC, CLAMP has been drawing Tsubasa since 2003. Del Rey publishes both manga in North America; it will ship the 23rd and 24th volumes of Tsubasa next month.

Mao Inoue and Jonathan Sherr to Star in 'My Darling is a Foreigner'

Actress Mao Inoue, 22, famous as Makino Tsukushi in “Hana yori dango,” and actor Jonathan Sherr, 35, will play husband and wife in the upcoming movie version of the popular comic book series “My Darling is a Foreigner.”

Written and illustrated by Saori Oguri, the comic books tell the tales of her life with Danish-American husband Tony Laszlo, as they encounter and overcome cultural differences and barriers. The series has sold over 2 million copies and snippets have been shown inside JR trains in Tokyo since 2007, providing comic relief for the crowds traveling to work and school and so forth.

Filming has already begun and Inoue commented on the warm atmosphere, saying she wants it to continue right the way through. “I’ve never had a foreign boyfriend, but quite a few of my friends and relatives have,” Inoue said. “So they tell me it’s likely I will have one too! I imagine it would be fun being in an international relationship, and the small things of everyday life would be interesting.”

Inoue also commented on Sherr’s good looks, saying: “When I first met him, I thought ‘Wow! He’s cool!’”

Sherr said he couldn’t believe he was chosen for the part. “I wondered if it was OK for me to star beside such a beautiful woman.”

“My Darling is a Foreigner” will open in cinemas next spring.

Aqua Timez Announces First Best Album

Aqua Timez will release their first best album on October 14, appropriately titled "The BEST of Aqua Timez." The collection will consist of two discs, each containing 13 tracks.On August 24, the band is celebrating the start of the fifth year since their debut mini-album in 2005. Their popularity has fueled them to a total of 5 million CDs sold and 10 million digital songs downloaded.This best album will include all ten of their singles, as well as their newest song, "Saigo Made," which goes on sale digitally on September 2. The rest of the tracks were personally chosen by the band's members. In addition to the two discs, the album's limited edition comes with a DVD that contains 21 songs.

GLAY Spend Y1.5 Billion on 15th Anniversary Concerts in Yokohama

YOKOHAMA — Popular rock band GLAY rocked Nissan Stadium in Yokohama over the weekend, spending roughly 1.5 billion yen putting together two “GLAY 15th anniversary Special Live 2009 THE GREAT VACATION” concerts, which attracted about 150,000 fans.

The group belted out 21 songs including “SOUL LOVE” and “HOWEVER” on a stage over 100 meters wide and 30 meters high, dubbed “HOTEL GLAY.” They also pleased all sections of the crowd when they went around the venue on a 500 meter-long stage extension that circled the stadium.

GLAY will perform at 14 venues when their nationwide tour begins on Nov 21.

Arashi member Masaki Aiba (26) is set to take on his first lead role in a drama series this fall. He will star in TV Asahi's "My Girl," his first series since "Yankee Bokou ni Kaeru" in 2003. Aiba, who is more known for appearing in variety shows than in dramas, said that he wants to show his fans a "completely different Masaki Aiba" from his usual self. "My Girl" is based on a manga by Mizu Sahara (an alternate pen name of mangaka Sumomo Yumeka), currently being serialized in Shinchosha's Weekly Comic Bunch. The comic is described as an "ultimate love story" about a young man named Masamune Kazama (Aiba). During high school, he had a girlfriend four years older than him, but she suddenly left one day. Koshonin on the Big Screen

The TV Asahi drama series "Koshonin" is coming back as a theatrical film, it was announced on Wednesday. Starring Ryoko Yonekura (33) as a police negotiator, the original show aired in early 2008 and returned for a single-episode special this past February that achieved 17.1% ratings.

Yonekura will reprise her role as the negotiator Reiko Usagi. This time will be her most challenging case yet, taking place at 10,000 meters above ground, as she happens to be on a hijacked passenger plane without her colleagues.

The movie will feature the same main cast members as the drama, plus some big guests.
Director Hidetomo Matsuda will reportedly shoot the movie with a 100 million yen budget. In addition to "Koshonin," Matsuda previously worked with Yonekura on three adaptations of Seicho Matsumoto novels: "Kurokawa no Techou," "Kemonomichi," and "Warui Yatsura."

For Yonekura, this will be just her third starring role in a movie during her ten-year acting career, with the last one being "Gun Crazy: A Woman from Nowhere" in 2002.

Like the "Koshonin" television series, Yonekura plans to do the action scenes in this new movie without a stunt double.Filming begins next month, with release scheduled for February 2010. The tentative title is "Koshonin: The Movie."

Kutsuna to play heroine in "Beck"

16-year-old actress Shiori Kutsuna, also known for being the current Pocky Princess, has landed the lead female role in the live-action adaptation of Harold Sakuishi's manga "Beck." The film was first revealed early last month, along with the news that Hiro Mizushima (25) has the starring role.The manga tells the story of five young men who form a band. The protagonist in the original story is the band's vocalist and guitarist Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka (played by Takeru Sato), but the movie focuses more on the band's leader Ryusuke Minami (Mizushima). Kutsuna plays the part of Maho Minami, the sister of Ryusuke who returns from New York and becomes involved with Koyuki.Kutsuna made her big screen debut this past spring when she appeared in Yuichi Sato's "Shugotenshi." "BECK," which is being directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, has already started filming and is scheduled for release in autumn 2010.

Singer Rain to Help Hansik

Singer Rain will join Korea's efforts to help the world enjoy its indigenous food, other wise known as ``hansik."

The international acclaimed singer, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, was appointed Monday as a point man for the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in leading the hansik globalization initiative

``Hansik is seriously making its debut on the world stage but, with Rain's help, it will in no time become food everybody can enjoy, like the world enjoying Rain's music,'' Minister Chang Tae-pyong said, while presenting the singer with a plaque and certificate at his office in the Gacheon Government Complex.

The minister said that Rain would participate in hansik banquets for foreign dignitaries and help them to learn and enjoy Korean food.

Rain will serve as ``Hansik Ambassador'' for the next year, starring in promotional videos and taking part in related events. His hit number, ``I do,'' was played as background music during the ceremony and for a video clip entitled, ``Rain Soaked in the Beauty of Hansik.''

A ministry official said that inviting Rain to assist in the globalization of hansik shows that Korea is very serious about turning the food industry into its future growth engine.

Under Minister Chang's leadership, Korea is pushing hard with a variety of related efforts from the standardization of hansik dishes to the provision of incentives for big hotels to open up hansik restaurants. In the ministry's annual food expo in October, a competition is scheduled for new and aspiring chefs.
