“Talking About Labor Law” at Richardson Law School

The University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu (UHWO) Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR), University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Law Library, Hawaiʻi State AFL-CIO, and Academic Labor United are co-sponsoring “Talking About Labor Law from a Worker’s Perspective” at the William S. Richardson Law School from February 4 - 5. The weekend of events continues the dialogue which began at a 2020 event held at the Law Library, an online exhibit and discussion held on “Race, Labor, and Indigeneity.”

Richardson alumni appointed to Governor-elect Green’s cabinet

December 16, 2022

Hawai’i’s Governor-elect Josh Green announced appointments to his cabinet, which include alumni and a student from the William S. Richardson School of Law. The cabinet convened its first meeting on December 7.

Richardson alumni Nadine Ando '82 was named Director of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, while Anne Lopez '01 has been appointed Attorney General. Chris Sadayasu '98 was named Director of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Cathy Betts ’06 and Joseph Campos II ‘25 will be continuing in their roles with the Department of Human Services as Director and Deputy Director, respectively. In another round of appointments announced on December 12 which included nominees for the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Dawn Chang ’85 was nominated as Chair and Laura Ka’akua (née Edmunds) ’07 as First Deputy; their appointments are subject to state Senate confirmation.

The "Strengthening Insolvency Systems in Asia and the Pacific" Event is co-organised by INSOL International with the Asian Development Bank, Singapore Management University, Singapore Global Restructuring Initiative, University of Chicago Law School’s Center on Law and Finance, and University of Cambridge’s Centre for Corporate and Commercial Law. It will take place over two days on 15-16 December 2022, and will be attended by regulators, judges, governmental officials, representatives of global central banks, and other international and regional institutions and leading international insolvency experts.

Personal Statement Workshop for First Gen Prospective Law Students

First gen students often have unique concerns and questions when it comes to applying to law school. This live workshop will feature four seasoned law admissions representatives with first gen backgrounds who will share targeted tips for prospective law students looking to be the first in their family to go to law school. Plenty of time will be reserved for questions from the audience and one-on-one personal statement draft review.

Professor Richard Wallsgrove '08 will conduct a mock Law School class for prospective students on November 17 at 5:30 PM at the Law School in Classroom 2 and on Zoom. This event is free and open to the public. After the mock class, the Admissions Team will answer your questions about admissions and financial aid.

One Country Two Systems and Cross-Border Legal Harmonization

On November 5, 2022, The University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law will hold the “One Country Two Systems and Cross-Border Legal Harmonization” conference, its first in person conference since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. This conference will gather leading practitioners and distinguished scholars to discuss the current cutting-edge topics relating to cross-border legal issues between Mainland China and Hong Kong. Through in-depth discussions on four major areas including data transfer, intellectual property, dispute resolution, and insolvency, this conference aims to generate illuminating insights to promote legal harmonization between Mainland China and Hong Kong.
