Six nationally-renowned legal scholars, including Harvard Law School’s Professor Annette Gordon-Reed, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in History, the 2008 National Book Award for Non-Fiction, and a MacArthur ‘Genius’ grant in 2010, will be in Hawai‘i during January to teach special courses at the William S. Richardson School of Law.

Gordon-Reed, who was also awarded a 2009 National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama, is the 2013 Frank Boas Visiting Harvard Professor. Boas, a generous supporter of the Law School, annually sponsors one visiting Harvard professor each January Term (J-Term.) The Wallace S.

The general public has a unique opportunity to hear nationally- renowned scholars during five free public events beginning the week of January 7 at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai‘i. The events are planned as part of J-Term – which includes short intensive seminars in January by outstanding visiting scholars.

On Monday, January 14, from 4:30-6 p.m. in CR2, Prof. Jerome Cohen of New York University School of Law will discuss China’s criminal justice system, reflecting in particular on the escape from house arrest last April of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng.

Cohen played a key role in the negotiations that enabled Chen to come to the U.S., deflecting a potentially damaging diplomatic crisis on the eve of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s visit to China.

The other public events include:

On May 6, 2012, Governor Neil Abercrombie proclaimed January 30, 2013 as Fred Korematsu Day in Hawai’i. It recognizes the humble Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and his historic and legally significant struggle to secure civil liberties for all U.S. citizens. For 40 years, Mr. Korematsu fought to seek justice for nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans wrongfully imprisoned during WWII. Events to celebrate Fred Korematsu Day are planned for the morning and evening of January 30th to encourage students and the community to contemplate and discuss the lessons learned from Mr. Korematsu’s experiences and their relevance in Hawai’i today. Fred Korematsu was born in Oakland, California, and January 30, 2013 marks what would have been his 94th birthday. He is truly an American hero.

One of the most outspoken critics of the high cost of American legal education has praise for the University of Hawai‘i’s William S. Richardson School of Law, noting that UH has managed to keep tuition increases “modest” while offering an excellent education.
Brian Tamanaha, the author of “Failing Law Schools,” and one of the most vociferous voices raising concerns about the spiking cost of American law schools, puts the UH Law School in a contrasting high-quality category, calling it one of about two dozen “excellent” state law schools that continue to charge tuition below $20,000 a year.
In a recent talk for law school faculty, staff, and students at the Richardson School of Law, Tamanaha noted: “On a purely economic basis, the Law Schools that have been modest in tuition increases – those that charge below $20,000 – can keep debt at $60,000 (for graduates of the three-year program) and that’s manageable debt.

Callies, the Benjamin A. Kudo Professor of Law at the William S. Richardson School of Law, recently received the 2012 Lambda Alpha International Member of the Year Award.

LAI is an international honorary society concerned with land economics. Its membership - by invitation only – represents a virtual international “Who’s Who” in the field of land economics and related disciplines. This award recognizes and honors the international reputation David Callies enjoys for his expertise in land use law.

This is the second recent honor for Callies, who also just released a new publication, Development by Agreement, that explores how agreements can be used to resolve a host of land use issues. He was one of three William S. Richardson School of Law professors honored at a recent book reception at the Pacific Club.

The lines are drawn. And it has nothing to do with elections.

This time it’s the annual Etes vs. Bruzers football game between current women law students and women who preceded them at the William S. Richardson Law School and who are now respected attorneys and judges in the community.

The Ete Bowl will be played at 1 p.m. Nov. 18 at the football practice field behind the softball diamond in the UH quarry area. A post-game tailgate potluck follows, with food provided by the two teams.

This year’s Ete captain, Christilei Hessler, already knows that it’s going to be a tough battle.

“It will to back and forth for the entire game,” says Hessler of this famous dust-up between law students and their more senior adversaries.
