Uma Experiência Socialista

Um professor de economia na universidade Texas Tech disse que nunca reprovou um só aluno antes, mas tinha, uma vez, reprovado uma turma inteira.

Esta classe em particular tinha insistido que o socialismo realmente funcionava: ninguém seria pobre e ninguém seria rico, tudo seria igualitário e 'justo. '

O professor então disse, "Ok, vamos fazer um experiência socialista nesta turma. Ao invés de dinheiro, usaremos as suas notas nas provas."

Todas as notas seriam concedidas com base na média da classe, e portanto seriam 'justas. ' Isso quis dizer que todos receberiam as mesmas notas, o que significou que ninguém seria reprovado. Isso também quis dizer, claro, que ninguém receberia um "A"...

Depois que a média das primeiras provas foram tiradas, todos receberam "B". Quem estudou com dedicação ficou indignado, mas os alunos que não se esforçaram ficaram muito felizes com o resultado.

Quando a segunda prova foi aplicada, os preguiçosos estudaram ainda menos - eles esperavam tirar notas boas de qualquer forma. Aqueles que tinham estudado bastante no início resolveram que eles também se aproveitariam do trem da alegria das notas. Portanto, agindo contra suas tendências, eles copiaram os hábitos dos preguiçosos. Como um resultado, a segunda média das provas foi "D".

Ninguém gostou.

Depois da terceira prova, a média geral foi um "F". As notas não voltaram a patamares mais altos mas as desavenças entre os alunos, buscas por culpados e palavrões passaram a fazer parte da atmosfera das aulas daquela turma. A busca por 'justiça' dos alunos tinha sido a principal causa das reclamações, inimizades e senso de injustiça que passaram a fazer parte daquela turma. No final das contas, ninguém queria mais estudar para beneficiar o resto da sala.

Portanto, todos os alunos repetiram o ano... Para sua total surpresa.

O professor explicou que a experiência socialista tinha falhado porque ela foi baseada no menor esforço possível da parte de seus participantes.

Preguiça e mágoas foi o seu resultado. Sempre haveria fracasso na situação a partir da qual a experiência tinha começado.

"Quando a recompensa é grande", disse ele, "o esforço pelo sucesso é grande, pelo menos para alguns de nós. Mas quando o governo elimina todas as recompensas ao tirar coisas dos outros sem o seu consentimento para dar a outros que não batalharam por elas, então o fracasso é inevitável."

While watch phones were formerly reserved for James Bond flicks, smaller tech companies have been reaching to release the first practical watch phone with no luck. Expensive, cheap and clunky – it simply hasn’t been done. Fortunately for tech buffs everywhere, the sharp looks, capable functionality and appropriate size of the LG Watch Phone can make it the first mass appeal watch phone to hit the market.

This wearable phone is a follow-up to the prototype that LG introduced at CES 2008 and includes a number of upgrades, including a full touchscreen interface, 3G capabilities and video calling.

"Imagine o meu caro que é professor, que é dia de exame do 12º ano e vai ter de fazer uma vigilância.

Continue a imaginar. O despertador avariou durante a noite. Ou fica preso no elevador. Ou o seu filho, já à porta do infantário, vomitou o quente, pastoso, húmido e fétido pequeno-almoço em cima da sua imaculada camisa.

Teve, portanto, de faltar à vigilância. Tem falta.
Ora esta coisa de um professor ficar com faltas injustificadas é complicada, por isso convém justificá-la. A questão agora é: como justificá-la?
Passemos então à parte divertida. A única justificação para o facto de ficar preso no elevador, do despertador avariar ou de não poder ir para uma sala do exame com a camisa vomitada, ababalhada e malcheirosa, é um atestado médico.
Qualquer pessoa com um pouco de bom senso percebe que quem precisa aqui do atestado médico será o despertador ou o elevador. Mas não. Só uma doença poderá justificar sua ausência na sala do exame. Vai ao médico. E, a partir deste momento, a situação deixa de ser divertida para passar a ser hilariante.

Chega-se ao médico com o ar mais saudável deste mundo. Enfim, com o sorriso de Jorge Gabriel misturado com o ar rosado do Gabriel Alves e a felicidade do padre Melícias.

A partir deste momento mágico, gera-se um fenómeno que só pode ser explicado através de noções básicas da psicopatologia da vida quotidiana. Os mesmos que explicam uma hipnose colectiva em Felgueiras, o holocausto nazi ou o sucesso da TVI.

O professor sabe que não está doente. O médico sabe que ele não está doente. O presidente do executivo sabe que ele não está doente. O director regional sabe que ele não está doente. O Ministério da Educação sabe que ele não está doente.

O próprio legislador, que manda a um professor que fica preso no elevador apresentar um atestado médico, também sabe que o professor não está doente.

Ora, num país em que isto acontece, para além do despertador que não toca, do elevador parado e da camisa vomitada, é o próprio país que está doente.

Um país assim, onde a mentira é legislada, só pode mesmo ser um país doente.

Vamos lá ver, a mentira em si não é patológica. Até pode ser racional, útil e eficaz em certas ocasiões. O que já será patológico é o desejo que temos de sermos enganados ou a capacidade para fingirmos que a mentira é verdade.

Lá nesse aspecto somos um bom exemplo do que dizia Goebbels: uma mentira várias vezes repetida transforma-se numa verdade. Já Aristóteles percebia uma coisa muito engraçada: quando vamos ao teatro, vamos com o desejo e uma predisposição para sermos enganados.

Mas isso é normal. Sabemos bem, depois de termos chorado baba e ranho a ver o 'ET', que este é um boneco e que temos de poupar a baba e o ranho para outras ocasiões. O problema é que em Portugal a ficção se confunde com a realidade. Portugal é ele próprio uma produção fictícia, provavelmente mesmo desde D.Afonso Henriques, que Deus me
perdoe.

A começar pela política. Os nossos políticos são descaradamente mentirosos. Só que ninguém leva a mal porque já estamos habituados.
Aliás, em Portugal é-se penalizado por falar verdade, mesmo que seja por boas razões, o que significa que em Portugal não há boas razões para falar verdade.

Se eu, num ambiente formal, disser a uma pessoa que tem uma nódoa na camisa, ela irá levar a mal.
Fica ofendida se eu digo isso é para a ajudar, para que possa disfarçar a nódoa e não fazer má figura. Mas ela fica zangada comigo só porque eu vi a nódoa, sabe que eu sei que tem a nódoa e porque assumi perante ela que sei que tem a nódoa e que sei que ela sabe que eu sei.

Nós, portugueses, adoramos viver enganados, iludidos e achamos normal que assim seja. Por exemplo, lemos revistas sociais e ficamos derretidos (não falo do cérebro, mas de um plano emocional) ao vermos casais felicíssimos e com vidas de sonho. Pronto, sabemos que aquilo é tudo mentira, que muitos deles divorciam-se ao fim de três meses e que outros vivem um alcoolismo disfarçado. Mas adoramos fingir que aquilo é tudo verdade.

Somos pobres, mas vivemos como os alemães e os franceses. Somos ignorantes e culturalmente miseráveis, mas somos doutores e engenheiros. Fazemos malabarismos e contorcionismos financeiros, mas vamos passar férias a Fortaleza. Fazemos estádios caríssimos para dois ou três jogos em 15 dias, temos auto-estradas modernas e europeias,
mas para ver passar, a seu lado, entulho, lixo, mato por limpar, eucaliptos, floresta queimada, barracões com chapas de zinco, casas horríveis e fábricas desactivadas.

Portugal mente compulsivamente. Mente perante si próprio e mente
perante o mundo.

Claro que não é um professor que falta à vigilância de um exame por ficar preso no elevador que precisa de um atestado médico. É Portugal que precisa, antes que comece a vomitar sobre si próprio."

Time Management in a Multitasking World

Time management is one of those skills no one teaches you in school but you have to learn.

Successful time management can be challenging, especially to those who are new to freelancing or being self-employed. When you have a boss telling you what to do and when to do it by, it’s much easier to prioritize and figure out what needs to be done and when.

When you’re not only dealing with client deadlines but also all of the day-to-day parts of running a business, on top of trying to maintain some sort of life outside of work, time management gets a whole lot trickier.

In today's workplace, you can differentiate yourself by your ability to handle information and manage your time.
You need to have a dedicated workspace. If you work in an office, this is easy enough to manage. But if you work from home, you’ll need to put a bit more effort in so get a proper desk.

Each person has a best time. You can discover yours by monitoring your productivity over a period of time. Then you need to manage your schedule to keep your best time free for your most important work.

Identify what you waste time doing and eliminate it.

Don't try and multitask, it can't be done!

Our brains can only focus and concentrate on one thing at a time, this is a proven scientific fact. While you can most likely handle multiple menial tasks, anything that requires you to concentrate, reason, or decide deserves full focus.

Taking time away from your work to find things, whether on your computer or your physical desktop, can be one of the biggest time-wasters.

This is one of those things that varies a lot by industry and personal preference, but you absolutely need to have a system in place to handle the information, files, and data that comes your way each day. This might include folders and tags on your computers, or file-folders, piles, and inboxes in your physical workspace.

Check your email on a schedule and organize it in file folders. If the message needs more thought, move it to your to-do list. If it's for reference, print it out. If it's a meeting, move it to your calendar. Take action on an email as soon as you read it and flag those that have important information.

If you don't know what you should be doing, how can you manage your time to do it?
Set your goals! If you don’t have any goals, how do you know what’s important? What deserves your time and attention?

You have to prioritize your work. For the most part, work due immediately (or within the next few days) should be completed first. Then comes the work due within the next week or two, and then everything else.

Set up a system of marking the priority of different items on your schedule.

Most people like software that can slice and dice their to-do list into manageable, relevant chunks.

There are tons of time management tools like "Post-It notes" or "Remember the Milk". Experiment with a few and see what seems to fit with the way you work. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution out there that will work for everyone. But there’s almost certainly a tool out there for everyone.

Use book marking services like del.icio.us to keep track of web sites. Instead of having random notes about places you want to check out, places you want to keep as a reference, etc., you can save them all in one place, and you can search and share your list easily.

One of the biggest challenges you’ll face is learning to say “No”. Nobody likes to have those two letters thrown back at them. But just saying yes to every demand, without taking the time out to consider the request, can often leave you with an unmanageable workload. Always say you’ll get back to them and give yourself some time to research and think it through.

Outsourced services can free up your time for the important things you want to do (like hanging out with your significant other or your kids.

Multitasking usually does more harm than good. Try to work on one project at a time.

Take at least two days a week off if at all possible. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Saturday and Sunday but whatever works for you. Just make sure you have some down time when you’re not working. Otherwise you’re likely to end up burning out!

When you get burned out you end up unable to focus or complete work as quickly as you might otherwise.

Take little breaks to refresh. Without them you grow tired and your concentration lags.

Have a five or ten minute breaks throughout the day to recharge and rest your eyes (staring at a computer screen all day is very hazardous to your vision).

Don’t overlook maintenance on your computer (backing up files, emptying your trash, cleaning out your inbox), basic maintenance on your office or workspace and on yourself, either. Get some exercise and eat right makes more productive.

When unexpected disasters crop up, you end up spending more time playing catch-up than you would have if you had just maintained things in the first place.

"1. Use a Reset Stylesheet
Different browsers are free to set default styles for font sizes, margins, and so forth. It’s a silly part of the specification but there you go. Rather than trying to eliminate these differences on a case-by-case basis, many web developers now make use of a reset stylesheet to set all margins to zero, remove all borders, standardize all font sizes, and so forth.
There’s dispute over which particular features need to be reset; but to be honest having any one of them is going to be better than none. Here’s a few examples:

2. Use a Browser Development Plug-In
When you’re learning it’s useful to be able to visualise “invisible” parts of your web-page – margins, padding, parent positions, and so forth. Unless you fancy setting debugging background and border styles, or guessing why your functions stop half-way through, I’d recommend getting a web development plug-in for your browser.
Most plug-ins will let you dig trough your DOM, debug JavaScript functions, and provide statistics about document load times.

Firebug – plug-in for Firefox. This is an absolutely fantastic and invaluable tool for web development.

Yahoo!’s YSlow – plug-in for the Firebug plug-in. Analyzes web pages and tells you why they’re slow.

Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar – plug-in for Internet Explorer. It feels like it was written in an afternoon by someone who had no idea what web development involves, but there isn’t really any alternative for IE.

3. Learn JavaScript
Learning JavaScript is still a work-in-progress for me. When I started web design I assumed (please note that word “assumed”!) that JavaScript was a toy language, suitable only for pointless browser effects. Boy was I wrong!
JavaScript, especially with the rise of AJAX, is becoming less an optional add-on, and more and more a vital part of modern web applications. It’s an elegant language, possibly let down by poor IDE support, and used correctly, will let you jump your browser through hoops. Imaging Google Maps or Yahoo! Pipes without it.

4. Pick a JavaScript Framework, and Learn It
Learning JavaScript is all well and good, but once you start trying to use it in anger you soon learn that each browser has a subtly different DOM API (or not so subtly different in the case of Internet Explorer).
You could re-invent the wheel and spend ages handling these different edge cases, or, I’d suggest, you could learn a framework and let it do all the heavy lifting.
Not convinced? How about this jQuery code to stripe table rows (details omitted for clarity):

(Yes I know in theory you should be able to do that in CSS. As always, Internet Explorer raises its middle finger to CSS theory).

5. Learn Photoshop
Ahhh, Photoshop. If you’ve only used simple paint programs before, using Photoshop is like emerging from a cave into the sunlight. (OK, that’s a bit of an exageration).
Traditional paint applications work on the basis that you want to change the color of pixels. Photoshop (at least for web design) works on the basis that you define regions, which are then styled. Pixels are assigned colors as a side-effect. The rules are:

Layers are king;

Selections are queen;

Nothing should ever be destroyed or lost.

So as a little example, if something needs a drop-shadow, you don’t start trying to draw one. (That would destroy or change the original thing). You simply make sure the thing is in its own layer, and apply a drop-shadow style.

6. Use Semantic HTML – And No Cutting Corners
Web design usually starts with graphic design, but really it should start with the content and proceed from there. If you start with the visuals, it’s all too easy to fixate on why things don’t look right, and from there it’s slippery slope to using non-semantic elements and inline styles.
Start with the content; use appropriate elements without regard for style; and only once you’ve done that should you move on to writing an appropriate stylesheet. (Of course, you may sometimes need to add stylistic spans… although you’d be better off using JavaScript to modify the DOM, rather than modifying the source itself).
A corollary of this point is that tables should only be used for tabular data – there’s no usual need to use them for layout.

7. Find Out Why It Doesn’t Work – Don’t Shotgun-Debug
The HTML/CSS visual model is pretty complex: inline vs block elements; different position modes; and so forth. What makes matters worse is that there’s no definitive reference HTML renderer implementation: you can never be sure whether your page doesn’t look right because you’ve made a mistake, or whether it’s some browser bug.
This state of affairs can lead to shotgun-debugging: tweaking a value to see if it fixes the problem; tweaking another value and checking again; and so on and so on…
Obviously this way of learning isn’t ideal. If you ever want to learn, I’ve found that you need to be predicting the effects of your changes. Before you make a change, you should have an idea in your head of the expected effect. If the actual effect isn’t the intended effect, you need to find out why. Is your understanding of HTML/CSS wrong, or is it a browser bug? Test on more browsers, and if your understanding is wrong, correct it. (Of course, if it’s a browser bug, then you’ve learnt something afterall).

8. Test on Internet Explorer Earlier
You might have noticed from my snide comments about Internet Explorer that it’s not exactly my favorite browser. If I’m going to be fair, IE7 isn’t too bad, and IE8 promises to actually be standards compliant (gasp!). What bugs me is that (at the time of writing) about 30% of the world is still using an eight-year-old browser that doesn’t even get the basics of the HTML box model correct, and we web developers are expected to support it.
Anyway… I didn’t intend this paragraph to be a rant, so deep breath… and… we have to live with the situation as it is. Firefox has great standards compliance and great developer tools, so it’s tempting to use it as your primary development platform until right at the end, when you do cross-browser testing.
Don’t do this. I’ve learnt the hard way: you need to test your work at each stage, on all browsers. Even as recently as six months ago I was caught out by this: I spent a lot of time coding some web code that relied on z-indexing, only to discover that IE7 doesn’t support this feature fully. In the end I was able to bludgeon Internet Explorer into working properly with some JavaScript, but it wasn’t fun. Lesson learned: check each feature is going to work properly on IE before coding it completely.

9. Don’t Be Afraid of AJAX
Normal web-pages are pretty easy to understand. The browser makes a request; the web server sends back some HTML. AJAX is a little more difficult to understand, so I steered clear of it for two years.
I finally got stuck in when we started writing EasyAs123Web.com. I wanted the user to be able to edit the website in-place, so that forced the issue.
When you get down to it, AJAX is pretty simple.

User does something (eg clicks) in the browser;

JavaScript makes request to server (in a thread);

Server replies with an XML document describing what to do;

JavaScript received the reply and modifies the DOM based on that XML.

Of course, the devil is in the details, but a decent AJAX library hides most of that for you.

10. Charge For Old Browser Support
Asking a client if they need Internet Explorer 6 (or earlier) support is a recipe for extra work. They’re hardly going to say no when you phrase it like that. You then sit down and make a working website, and test it in IE6. Argh! Scrambled website! Eventually, you get it working, and you find that you’ve spent twice as long on the actual HTML/CSS as you planned to. Bad times."

Exercise your brain, not just your body.
A lot of us leave learning behind when we leave school, college or university. Keep the brain fit by learning something new, whether it be a language, a new skill or musical instrument.

The world is a mystery.
Use your brain to constantly ask questions and explore your surroundings. Continually exercise your brain by not accepting everything you see and hear: question it and free your sense of curiosity.

Use both hemispheres
Use the left hemisphere of your brain to practice logical, mathematical problems in your life. Use the right hemisphere to unleash your creativity. You will know what side is dominant so make it a point to practice using your non dominant hemisphere.

Get to know your sleeping pattern.
Your brain needs sleep as much as your body but everybody is different. I function on 5-6 hours you might work best on 8-9 hours.

Feed your brain decent information.
Your brain is learning throughout the night, so give it something worthwhile to feed it. Our brain is not restoring energy whilst we are sleeping it is cutting out the noise and going over the days events and processing it; give it some great material to process.

If you want to learn more whilst studying, start pacing.
If you are reading a book, start pacing. Movement gets the blood flowing and this helps oxygenate your brain. I walked my way through university and have taught my sons study walking to help them memorize information.

You've heard it before.
Exercise is probably the number 1 way to increase the brains capabilities in every way possible, from memory to creativity. There's no getting around it, we all need to exercise.

Keep Social
Staying socially active has been shown to keep your brain sharp well into old age.

Use the internet to keep your brain active.
A University of California Los Angeles team found searching the web stimulated centers in the brain that controlled decision-making and complex reasoning.

Eat dark chocolate.
Yes, eating dark chocolate has been shown to be beneficial for releasing an important brain chemical called dopamine. Dopamine aids in learning and memory.

Learn a song.
Learn the lyrics of some of your favorite songs to keep your listening skills and memory skills alive.

Watch brain stimulating movies.
Movies that make you think (such as mysteries) help keep your brain and mind active.

Play video games
This has been shown to increase cognitive abilities and can help fight Alzheimer's.

Practice doing things with your non-dominant hand.
This stimulates the brain in many areas and also can be quite fun.

Use meditation as a way to alleviate your stress.
There are thousands of studies about the beneficial effects of mediation and keeping your stress levels down is good for you. You lose brain cells the more stressed you feel, so controlling stress levels is important.

Laugh as often as possible.
Laughing out loud boosts the immune system and releases endorphins, the bodies feel good chemicals.

Think positive.
Thinking positively is a great way to keep your brain alive. Constant negative thinking depresses the mind and goes on to literally depress the immune system. Thinking more positive thoughts is a good way to keep stress down and spur you to take action for a better life.

Practice gratitude.
Practicing gratitude can increase your happiness level significantly which helps to alleviate stress which helps your whole brain and body.

Sex
Sex is another great way to keep your cardiovascular system healthy which means more oxygen to your brain which keeps the brain healthy.

Read a great book.
No matter what type of books you read, they are all beneficial in keeping your brain healthy and active and ward off the aging process.

Drink less alcohol.
Alcohol in moderation can actually be good for the brain, however too much alcohol can kill brain cells and your ability to be able to think and reason effectively.

Working.
A lot of people look forward to giving up work as we get older, however, working even in a part time job can keep the mind active. If you are retired you can do volunteer work to keep you active.

Keep up to date with current events and news.
Keeping your brain fit is about feeding your mind with new information. Watching current affairs programs can help with this so long as they don't stress you out.

Listen to music.
Listening to music that you wouldn't normally listen to is another good way to keep your brain active. Music has the ability to release positive emotions in you.

Dance.
Dancing is a great all around for both mind and body. Learning s a new dance helps your cognitive skills, your spatial awareness, your social skills, your motor skills and helps keeps your body healthy.

Throw a ball.
Throwing and catching a ball is great for sensory-guided movement. It can improve your brain’s visual, tactile and hand-eye coordination responses and keep them sharp well into old age.

Eat well.
Eating certain types of food can really be beneficial to your brains chemistry. Avoid fatty foods and eat more vegetables and fruit. This is sound advice for brain and body.

Drink plenty of water.
Drinking water helps the cells function properly and keeps you feeling hydrated from the inside out.

Have a cup of tea.
Drinking tea, hot or cold, can stimulate your brain in many ways. Tea contains caffeine which can be good for you if drunk in moderation.

Take a trip.
Have you always fancies traveling well it has been shown that traveling really does broaden your horizons.

Use your debating skills.
Having friendly debates with friends and family can improve your logical, thinking, reasoning and creativity skills.

Sleep a little longer.
Sleeping an extra few hours every now and again is good for rejuvenating your brain and help you learn faster.

Take naps.
Taking a nap throughout the day can help keep you from feeling tired and help stave off 'brain fog'. A ten minute nap will do to help you function throughout the day.

Turn down the TV.
If you watch a lot of TV turn it down to hone your listening and concentration skills.

Break the cycle.
If you tend to do the same thing day in day out, try and break the pattern of your activities. Your brain relies on doing something different to keep it active, break your normal routine to do this.

Learn a new word.
Learning anything new will help keep your brain healthy. Learning a new word each day is a simple way to accomplish this.

Look at old photographs.
This is a great way to keep your memories alive and to strengthen cell connections within the brain.

Do something outrageous.
Doing things we would normally never do like a bungee jump, a parachute jump, hill climbing, a helicopter ride, etc., will keep your brain alive, literally.

Train your brain.
The 'cogni-fit' industry is huge and is growing every year and for good reason. Start playing some of these 'cogni-fit' games to keep your brain healthy and active.

Take supplements.
Supplements like omega-3, folic acid with vitamin B-12, CoEnzyme Q10, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, and an all round strong multi-vitamin supplement, has been shown to slow down the aging process. Check with your doctor before taking supplements.

Mindfulness.
A simple mindfulness exercise is to just sit and relax and pay attention to your breathing. This helps to promote relaxation, keep your mind focused, helps with concentration and does the body a world of good.

Develop critical thinking skills.
Critical thinking involves you asking questions of yourself and the world around and looking for evidence of your assumptions.

Become a philosopher.
Not literally, but start thinking about the bigger questions in life. This develops your brain on many levels. More than likely you will never come up with a definitive answer to the big questions but it keeps your brain and mind active.

Make your own affirmations.
Affirmations are a great way to keep your mind focused on your life goals. When you use affirmations you are also using your imagination, and activating other regions in your brain which can help with memory, creativity and even releasing feel good chemicals.

Thinking outside the box.
I always thought this was a strange saying as you cannot really think outside the box when you are always living inside the box of knowledge. However over the years I have come to realize it really means thinking without using your reasoning skills to look for alternatives and it can be a great way to keep your mind active.

Sing out loud.
Singing is a great way to help you focus and get rid of stress. People who sing out loud feel happier as they are not internalizing thoughts but focusing on an ext renal action, their voice. It also aids memory.

Scientists now know that our brains continuously make new neurons throughout our lives and it does this in response to the what we do in our lives. Neurons are important for transmitting and making connections with other cells. If we lose the neurons, we lose the power to think properly, to use our creativity, to learn, to memorize effectively, basically our brains slowly die. Exercise and brain stimulation is one of the best ways to keep making these new neurons. Using some of the examples above you will keep your brain healthy and active for years to come."

Location Extensions into Google Adwords

Google Adwords now allows you to include Google Local information (Mapping and Address) from Google Maps right in your advert and further enhance the utility and visual appeal of your adverts. This is great news and a big advantage for all the local businesses!

According to a member of Google's AdWords team writing on their blog on July 24th: “Location extensions allow you to "extend" your AdWords campaigns by dynamically attaching your business address to your ads. This new feature will be fully available in the coming weeks, with some advertisers having access to the feature starting today.” The features have landed in Ireland now and are extending to other countries.

Local business adverts are no longer a separate entity, but are identical in form to the new local-enhanced Adwords adverts. This also helps streamline the Adwords process for advertisers.

This extension to Google Local shows that the adverts are themselves beginning to mix the media available to Google - Google have already implemented blended search where different search elements like maps, video, news are listed in search results along with the traditional website results.

This new interface is very useful for a business with multiple locations. Instead of having to set up multiple local ads, now you just have to assign extensions to all your ads and Google will show the address of the best location based on where the user is located.

"The number (and quality) of external web pages linking to your site is an important factor that Google uses to determine how your site should be ranked in organic search results.

That explains why you frequently get emails from desperate webmasters requesting you to participate in reciprocal link exchanges for "mutual benefit". And then you have the paid links business where one can buy text links on other websites with the sole purpose of increasing Google Juice.

Link building through paid text ads, link exchanges or any artificial methods requires effort but are the gains worth the time and money spent? Probably not.

Link importance varies with location

The initial Google PageRank algorithm would give equal weight to every link on a web page irrespective of the location – the links could be in the sidebar, the header, inside the actual content or anywhere else and they’ll still get the same value from Google.
That, according to Matt Cutts, has changed and Google can treat links in different places differently. For instance, if a link is placed in the footer or is repeated all across the site (like in the case of text ads), it might not carry the same weight as a link that’s in the actual paragraph of a text.

SEOmoz recently published a list of factors that search engines consider when judging the value of a link and their finding also suggest that search engines assign weight to links based on their location on the web page.

Internal links in the footer of web pages may not provide the same beneficial results that those same links will when placed into top/header navigation. Others have reported that one way the engines appear to be fighting pervasive link advertising is by diminishing the value that external links carry from the sidebar or footer of web pages."

O Turismo na Região Autónoma da Madeira

Ontem ao Turismo da RAM, associava-se a exaltação do meio, pela sua virginal beleza e procura de condições climáticas capazes de aliviarem as doenças pulmonares.

Hoje as exigências e motivações são outras, no entanto a Madeira mantém o estatuto de outrora no que concerne ao seu excepcional clima, à singularidade paisagística e à hospitalidade dos seus residentes.

O exotismo deste arquipélago, “paraíso flutuante”, constitui sem dúvida uma das mais importantes características e atracções deste destino, muito por força da sua floresta Laurissilva, endémica das ilhas da Macaronésia e cuja origem remonta ao período Terciário, sendo esta o seu ex-líbris em termos de fauna e flora.
Segundo dados da OMT - Organização Mundial do Turismo, as chegadas de turistas internacionais aumentaram nas últimas duas décadas do século XX a uma taxa média anual de 5,7%, passando de 287 milhões de turistas em 1980, para aproximadamente 700 milhões em 2000, prevendo-se que esse número venha a duplicar nas próximas duas décadas, devendo atingir cerca de 1000 milhões em 2010 e 1500 milhões no ano de 2020.

Foi no ano de 2008 que o destino Madeira ultrapassou as expectativas que lhe foram apontadas no ano anterior, segundo informação disponibilizada no endereço electrónico da Secretaria Regional do Turismo e Transportes.

De acordo com a Secretária Conceição Estudante, “Foi um ano de sucessos mas foi, também, o ano em que a conjuntura económica e financeira internacional começou a dar os seus primeiros sinais de fragilidade. Ainda assim, a Madeira conseguiu resultados extremamente favoráveis, tendo por base uma estratégia concertada entre os agentes públicos e privados do sector”.

Por ocasião do debate sobre a situação do Turismo na RAM realizado em finais de Abril do corrente ano, Conceição Estudante referiu ainda que em 4 anos, entre 2004 e 2008, a capacidade de alojamento aumentou cerca de 3,6% na Região passando de 29.523 para 30.602 camas, tendo o número de hóspedes crescido 20,3%, ultrapassando um milhão de visitantes.

Em igual período, a taxa de ocupação aumentou 12,8%, fechando o ano de 2008 com 60,4%, e os proveitos totais cresceram aproximadamente 22,1% o que representa valores na casa dos 300 milhões anuais.

Quanto ao nível de eficiência do hotel na captação de receita de hospedagem (RevPar), aumentou em 18,7%, passando de 30.94 euros em 2004 para 36.71 euros, em 2008, tendo o turismo de cruzeiros aumentado em 43% no número de visitantes e 5,5 em escalas entre 2004 e 2008.

Estes indicadores demonstram a evolução actual do destino Madeira, e o seu desenvolvimento e consolidação como um dos melhores no panorama nacional, especialmente no referido período.

O “boom” turístico, levou à ocupação e valorização de uma boa “fatia” da orla costeira do Funchal, com o aparecimento de diversos e sofisticados hotéis e variados serviços de apoio, no entanto tal facto veio privar em muitas zonas o normal acesso do madeirense ao "seu" mar.

Segundo informações recolhidas através do site da Direcção Regional do Turismo, o parque hoteleiro da região compreende actualmente cerca de 323 unidades hoteleiras.

A Região caracteriza-se actualmente por ser um destino turístico com fortes perspectivas de crescimento, onde o sector desempenha um papel crucial na criação de riqueza como componente de consumo na sociedade e também na promoção e consolidação de valores e tradição patrimonial.

O futuro do sector passa por uma perspectiva de sustentabilidade ambiental, económica e social, no quadro de um novo modelo de desenvolvimento do Turismo que privilegie a qualidade, tanto em termos ambientais do destino, como no que concerne aos empreendimentos e serviços turísticos.

Por estar inserida num nicho de mercado altamente competitivo, a indústria hoteleira na Região deve procurar agora mais que nunca obter vantagens concorrenciais que lhe permita sobreviver e ultrapassar por um lado a crise que enfrentamos e por outro responder adequadamente à feroz pressão da concorrência, especialmente vinda de mercados emergentes.

Neste aspecto, a aposta na qualidade do serviço prestado deverá ser prioritária, até por ser inegavelmente um factor crítico de promoção e de diferenciação.

Why You Should be Worried About Twitter's New Terms of Service

"In a sign that they may finally have come up with some ideas about how to make money, the nice folks with the unlikely names at Twitter have changed their terms of service. Forthwith:

Now that we know more about how Twitter is being used, we've made changes to our Terms of Service—these are the basic rules that go along with using Twitter. The revisions more appropriately reflect the nature of Twitter and convey key issues such as ownership. For example, your tweets belong to you, not to Twitter. With these revisions, we expect some discussion so here are a few highlights from the updated page.

Advertising—In the Terms, we leave the door open for advertising. We'd like to keep our options open as we've said before.

Ownership—Twitter is allowed to "use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display and distribute" your tweets because that's what we do. However, they are your tweets and they belong to you.

APIs—The apps that have grown around the Twitter platform are flourishing and adding value to the ecosystem. You authorize us to make content available via our APIs. We're also working on guidelines for use of the API.

SPAM—Abusive behavior and spam is also outlined in these terms according to the rules we've been operating under for some time.

It seems to me that there are a couple of problematic things in the Ownership section. "Adapt" and "modify" suggest that the Twitter folks are saying they have the right to alter a Tweeter's words, and thus the meaning, of a tweet. I doubt if they have evil intentions, but it is very easy to make something say the exact opposite of what you intended. As a matter of reputation management, that should concern those of us who use the service.

The second concern is more pedestrian but important. By asserting the right to "publish" your work, there is the implication that they have the right to publish your stuff not just on Twitter but anywhere. Suppose, however, they wanted to produce a book called the 1,000 Stupidest Tweets Ever or some other commercial reproduction of your tweets? The implication is that they have the right to do that without compensation.

That strikes me as wrong. We're an aggregator site and we get an incredible amount of excellent content flowing through that could potentially be shaped into commercial products but we wouldn't dream of doing so without getting specific permission from the bloggers and paying a small, but fair, fee.

"O Twitter tem novas regras. Os responsáveis da plataforma explicam que agora que já têm um conhecimento mais detalhado do tipo de utilização que é feito do site estão em condições de adaptar as suas regras de funcionamento. E fizeram-no.

As novas regras deixam em aberto a possibilidade de o site passar a ter publicidade. Já o spam está proibido e não será tolerado pelos responsáveis da rede. Este era, aliás, tema já constante do primeiro regulamento do site, na mesma perspectiva, mas volta a ter lugar de destaque nos pontos do novo regulamento sublinhados num post no blog oficial que anuncia a renovação.
Para os utilizadores o novo regulamento esclarece que os conteúdos produzidos no Twitter são de quem os produz, mas o site reserva-se o direito de os usar, copiar, reproduzir, processar, adaptar, modificar, publicar, transmitir, exibir e distribuir.

A clarificação do regulamento do Twitter surge numa altura em que vários outros serviços sociais também já se viram obrigados a fazer o mesmo, para evitar brechas que permitam processos judiciais ou simples protestos dos utilizadores, como enfrentou o Facebook ainda recentemente.

As regras do Twitter são em termos genéricos idênticas às de outras plataformas. A maior novidade é mesmo a "porta aberta" à possibilidade que no futuro pode significar mudanças para a experiência de utilização do serviço."

TweetDeck Expands Social Network Support

"When TweetDeck first debuted more than fourteen months ago, it changed the game in terms of what users expected from a Twitter client. Iain Dodsworth's creation took Twitter out of the Web and onto the desktop, and introduced concepts such as Groups and integrated search (then done with Summize). Following the product's one year anniversary in July, Dodsworth is expanding the vision of TweetDeck to be more than just a Twitter client, instead acting as a "browser for the real-time Web". Today, TweetDeck moved further in this direction by adding MySpace support, expanding its integration with Facebook, and interestingly, starting a hand-selected Twitter directory that sits in between Twitter's controversial Suggested User List and the anarchy of WeFollow.

The New TweetDeck (Click for Full Size) For diehard TweetDeck addicts, the changes are obvious. Instead of a string of third-party integrated services, like 12 seconds or StockTwits, you see only the major social networks - including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. Each has sub-buttons when you select the top level site, and you can select an action below. The additions now mean you can view your entire Facebook stream in TweetDeck, including videos, photos and other social activity, including, yes, status updates. From within TweetDeck, you can also organize Facebook friends into groups and see photo albums without opening the Web browser.

While we may turn our nose up at TweetDeck's MySpace integration, Iain and team are trying to make the application a single destination for the Web's most popular networks. Facebook and Twitter are clearly growing like weeds, and Dodsworth's pet project is positioned to capitalize on that growth - with or without the "real time Web" buzzword.

Meanwhile, the TweetDeck directory is a clear improvement over Twitter's unexplained Suggested User List (SUL), but looks like it's at the beginning stages. From http://tweetdeck.com/beta/directory/, you can see Twitter users, organized by topic, along with the number of users included. Should you find a group of users you like, click "Add column", and their tweets will be displayed alongside those groups you have already configured. No group in the directory has more than 50 accounts, but some can be quite small, such as "EU Politics", which sports only three. The idea? The site says: "Sometimes it’s hard to find people talking about things you’re interested in on Twitter. So we’ve created the TweetDeck Directory to make it easier to find and follow your favourite subjects, a bit like a TV Guide for Twitter channels." This is similar to WeFollow, where people can tag themselves and be included (although the site is extremely high-follower centric).

Clear benefits to the new TweetDeck, slugged with version number 0.3 include the ability to browse Facebook and Twitter together in parallel. Should you be one of the odd users who also manages an active MySpace profile, then the story gets even better.

In an e-mail introducing today's changes, Iain clarified the goals, saying that with today's Internet being as much about streams as active Web pages, that " people need a new way to filter and interact with the current generation of online properties." He is clearly trying to take TweetDeck beyond Twitter - becoming what could be the future of social browsing."

"About six out of seven (86%) US companies surveyed have used social technologies in support of one or more areas of their business, found a recent study conducted by Mzinga in collaboration with Babson Executive Education.

More than 60% reported using some form of social technology as an ongoing component of their business.
Of those respondents who said their organizations employed social media, 57% reported its use in marketing, 39% cited internal collaboration and learning, and 29% reported social-media use in customer service and support:

Some 55% of respondents say their business devotes employee resources (part-time or full-time) to manage and drive social media initiatives, yet only 40% have allocated budget to those efforts.

Common challenges organizations face include senior leadership's acceptance, definition of program strategies and goals, resource constraints, and lack of measurement and ROI tracking.

The top social application and technologies being used at respondents' organizations are blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, virtual meetings, microblogs (e.g., Twitter), YouTube, chat, standalone community sites that incorporate multiple social tools into one environment, and discussion forums:

Respondents are generally satisfied with the social technologies available to them, yet 79% of their companies do not measure ROI. (This finding suggests opportunities exist for vendors that can make ROI easily accessible, according to Mzinga.)

41% of respondents do not know whether their current social tools can measure ROI.

55% of respondents report that their current solutions do not lack features or functions they wish were available.

Of the respondents reporting that their companies use social media, 39% use vendor-provided solutions, 26% have implemented proprietary solutions, and 20% use free or trial downloads.

About the data: The survey was conducted August 3-12, 2009, and drew more than 555 participants from various professional disciplines, including media, financial services, consulting, marketing, human resources, and engineering. The report is available as a download."
