4 men conducting covert operations on behalf of the Unites States and Israel have been killed in a shootout with Iran security forces.

Iranian media reports that one of their police officers died in shootout which left 4 members of 4 the U.S. and Israel backed Jundullah organization dead.

Iran state media reports security forces were tipped off to the organizations due to increased intelligence operations ahead of what now appears to be an imminent military strike against Iran by the U.S. and its allies due to escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.

In 2007 Iranian State TV aired the confession of members of the Jundullah organization they arrested after the group claimed responsibility for a bus bombing which left 11 Iranian soldiers.

In the confession, the men stated that they were recruited into the Jundullah organization by CIA who then trained them in Pakistan to carry out covert operations against Iran, including their latest mission to kill the Iranian soldiers.

The CIA denied the claims made in the aired in the confession saying such actions would have required a presidential order along with congressional oversight.

The scandal soon turned into an international embarrassment for the Bush administration when ABC news soon after reported tribal sources revealed the CIA was in fact funneling money to the organization through a third party proxy.

Even more embarrassing was the revelation of Pakistan government officials who told ABC news sponsoring Jundullah to conduct operations against Iran was on the agenda in meetings they held with Vice President Dick Cheney.

ABC News Exclusive: The Secret War Against Iran

A Pakistani tribal militant group responsible for a series of deadly guerrilla raids inside Iran has been secretly encouraged and advised by American officials since 2005, U.S. and Pakistani intelligence sources tell ABC News.

The group, called Jundullah, is made up of members of the Baluchi tribe and operates out of the Baluchistan province in Pakistan, just across the border from Iran.

It has taken responsibility for the deaths and kidnappings of more than a dozen Iranian soldiers and officials.

U.S. officials say the U.S. relationship with Jundullah is arranged so that the U.S. provides no funding to the group, which would require an official presidential order or “finding” as well as congressional oversight.

Tribal sources tell ABC News that money for Jundullah is funneled to its youthful leader, Abd el Malik Regi, through Iranian exiles who have connections with European and Gulf states.

Jundullah has produced its own videos showing Iranian soldiers and border guards it says it has captured and brought back to Pakistan.

The leader, Regi, claims to have personally executed some of the Iranians.

“He used to fight with the Taliban. He’s part drug smuggler, part Taliban, part Sunni activist,” said Alexis Debat, a senior fellow on counterterrorism at the Nixon Center and an ABC News consultant who recently met with Pakistani officials and tribal members.

“Regi is essentially commanding a force of several hundred guerrilla fighters that stage attacks across the border into Iran on Iranian military officers, Iranian intelligence officers, kidnapping them, executing them on camera,” Debat said.

Most recently, Jundullah took credit for an attack in February that killed at least 11 members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard riding on a bus in the Iranian city of Zahedan.

Last month, Iranian state television broadcast what it said were confessions by those responsible for the bus attack.

They reportedly admitted to being members of Jundullah and said they had been trained for the mission at a secret location in Pakistan.

The Iranian TV broadcast is interspersed with the logo of the CIA, which the broadcast blamed for the plot.

A CIA spokesperson said “the account of alleged CIA action is false” and reiterated that the U.S. provides no funding of the Jundullah group.

Pakistani government sources say the secret campaign against Iran by Jundullah was on the agenda when Vice President Dick Cheney met with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in February.

A senior U.S. government official said groups such as Jundullah have been helpful in tracking al Qaeda figures and that it was appropriate for the U.S. to deal with such groups in that context.

Some former CIA officers say the arrangement is reminiscent of how the U.S. government used proxy armies, funded by other countries including Saudi Arabia, to destabilize the government of Nicaragua in the 1980s.

However, a recent Foreign Policy report sought to deflect blame from the United States by claiming that the Israeli secret service pretended to be CIA agents to recruit Jundullah members and train them to conduct operations against Iran.

According to the report, high-level CIA officials said they witnessed Israel’s Mossad recruit the members “right under their noses … out in the open … like they didn’t give a damn.”

However, personally I find the Foreign Policy article to be suspiciously convenient.

It lets the United States off the hook and deflects the blame to Israel, who can not be punished by U.N. or other any other international law because the U.S. has the right to veto anything resolution brought before the council.

As an analogy, let’s say the President of the United States was caught engaging in some criminal act.

He can simply have some fall guy take the blame and then pardon him for the crime.

The same relationship applies to the U.S. and Israel in respect to U.N and international law.

On the other hand the integrity of Foreign Policy is unbeknownst to me. Surely with the popularity and reputation of Foreign Policy, I opening myself up to criticism for questioning the author and his sources.

In any case, the Foreign Policy article is a fascinating read here is the first half of the Foreign Policy article to let you judge for yourself.

As you read, however, remember that when you are dealing with U.S. and Israel intelligence you are dealing with the best psychological manipulators in the world. Such is the world of spies, lies, and conmen who cause wars.

False Flag

A series of CIA memos describes how Israeli Mossad agents posed as American spies to recruit members of the terrorist organization Jundallah to fight their covert war against Iran.

Buried deep in the archives of America’s intelligence services are a series of memos, written during the last years of President George W. Bush’s administration, that describe how Israeli Mossad officers recruited operatives belonging to the terrorist group Jundallah by passing themselves off as American agents. According to two U.S. intelligence officials, the Israelis, flush with American dollars and toting U.S. passports, posed as CIA officers in recruiting Jundallah operatives — what is commonly referred to as a “false flag” operation.

The memos, as described by the sources, one of whom has read them and another who is intimately familiar with the case, investigated and debunked reports from 2007 and 2008 accusing the CIA, at the direction of the White House, of covertly supporting Jundallah — a Pakistan-based Sunni extremist organization. Jundallah, according to the U.S. government and published reports, is responsible for assassinating Iranian government officials and killing Iranian women and children.

But while the memos show that the United States had barred even the most incidental contact with Jundallah, according to both intelligence officers, the same was not true for Israel’s Mossad. The memos also detail CIA field reports saying that Israel’s recruiting activities occurred under the nose of U.S. intelligence officers, most notably in London, the capital of one of Israel’s ostensible allies, where Mossad officers posing as CIA operatives met with Jundallah officials.

The officials did not know whether the Israeli program to recruit and use Jundallah is ongoing. Nevertheless, they were stunned by the brazenness of the Mossad’s efforts.

“It’s amazing what the Israelis thought they could get away with,” the intelligence officer said. “Their recruitment activities were nearly in the open. They apparently didn’t give a damn what we thought.”

Interviews with six currently serving or recently retired intelligence officers over the last 18 months have helped to fill in the blanks of the Israeli false-flag operation. In addition to the two currently serving U.S. intelligence officers, the existence of the Israeli false-flag operation was confirmed to me by four retired intelligence officers who have served in the CIA or have monitored Israeli intelligence operations from senior positions inside the U.S. government.

The CIA and the White House were both asked for comment on this story. By the time this story went to press, they had not responded. The Israeli intelligence services — the Mossad — were also contacted, in writing and by telephone, but failed to respond. As a policy, Israel does not confirm or deny its involvement in intelligence operations.

There is no denying that there is a covert, bloody, and ongoing campaign aimed at stopping Iran’s nuclear program, though no evidence has emerged connecting recent acts of sabotage and killings inside Iran to Jundallah. Many reports have cited Israel as the architect of this covert campaign, which claimed its latest victim on Jan. 11 when a motorcyclist in Tehran slipped a magnetic explosive device under the car of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a young Iranian nuclear scientist. The explosion killed Roshan, making him the fourth scientist assassinated in the past two years. The United States adamantly denies it is behind these killings.

According to one retired CIA officer, information about the false-flag operation was reported up the U.S. intelligence chain of command. It reached CIA Director of Operations Stephen Kappes, his deputy Michael Sulick, and the head of the Counterintelligence Center. All three of these officials are now retired. The Counterintelligence Center, according to its website, is tasked with investigating “threats posed by foreign intelligence services.”

The report then made its way to the White House, according to the currently serving U.S. intelligence officer. The officer said that Bush “went absolutely ballistic” when briefed on its contents.

“The report sparked White House concerns that Israel’s program was putting Americans at risk,” the intelligence officer told me. “There’s no question that the U.S. has cooperated with Israel in intelligence-gathering operations against the Iranians, but this was different. No matter what anyone thinks, we’re not in the business of assassinating Iranian officials or killing Iranian civilians.”

Israel’s relationship with Jundallah continued to roil the Bush administration until the day it left office, this same intelligence officer noted. Israel’s activities jeopardized the administration’s fragile relationship with Pakistan, which was coming under intense pressure from Iran to crack down on Jundallah. It also undermined U.S. claims that it would never fight terror with terror, and invited attacks in kind on U.S. personnel.

“It’s easy to understand why Bush was so angry,” a former intelligence officer said. “After all, it’s hard to engage with a foreign government if they’re convinced you’re killing their people. Once you start doing that, they feel they can do the same.”

A senior administration official vowed to “take the gloves off” with Israel, according to a U.S. intelligence officer. But the United States did nothing — a result that the officer attributed to “political and bureaucratic inertia.”

“In the end,” the officer noted, “it was just easier to do nothing than to, you know, rock the boat.” Even so, at least for a short time, this same officer noted, the Mossad operation sparked a divisive debate among Bush’s national security team, pitting those who wondered “just whose side these guys [in Israel] are on” against those who argued that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

The debate over Jundallah was resolved only after Bush left office when, within his first weeks as president, Barack Obama drastically scaled back joint U.S.-Israel intelligence programs targeting Iran, according to multiple serving and retired officers.

The decision was controversial inside the CIA, where officials were forced to shut down “some key intelligence-gathering operations,” a recently retired CIA officer confirmed. This action was followed in November 2010 by the State Department’s addition of Jundallah to its list of foreign terrorist organizations — a decision that one former CIA officer called “an absolute no-brainer.”

Since Obama’s initial order, U.S. intelligence services have received clearance to cooperate with Israel on a number of classified intelligence-gathering operations focused on Iran’s nuclear program, according to a currently serving officer. These operations are highly technical in nature and do not involve covert actions targeting Iran’s infrastructure or political or military leadership.

“We don’t do bang and boom,” a recently retired intelligence officer said. “And we don’t do political assassinations.”

Israel regularly proposes conducting covert operations targeting Iranians, but is just as regularly shut down, according to retired and current intelligence officers. “They come into the room and spread out their plans, and we just shake our heads,” one highly placed intelligence source said, “and we say to them — ‘Don’t even go there. The answer is no.’”

Unlike the Mujahedin-e Khalq, the controversial exiled Iranian terrorist group that seeks the overthrow of the Tehran regime and is supported by former leading U.S. policymakers, Jundallah is relatively unknown — but just as violent. In May 2009, a Jundallah suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in Zahedan, the capital of Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province bordering Pakistan, during a Shiite religious festival. The bombing killed 25 Iranians and wounded scores of others.

The attack enraged Tehran, which traced the perpetrators to a cell operating in Pakistan. The Iranian government notified the Pakistanis of the Jundallah threat and urged them to break up the movement’s bases along the Iranian-Pakistani border. The Pakistanis reacted sluggishly in the border areas, feeding Tehran’s suspicions that Jundallah was protected by Pakistan’s intelligence services.

The 2009 attack was just one in a long line of terrorist attacks attributed to the organization. In August 2007, Jundallah kidnapped 21 Iranian truck drivers. In December 2008, it captured and executed 16 Iranian border guards — the gruesome killings were filmed, in a stark echo of the decapitation of American businessman Nick Berg in Iraq at the hands of al Qaeda’s Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. In July 2010, Jundallah conducted a twin suicide bombing in Zahedan outside a mosque, killing dozens of people, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In reporting on the shootout, Press TV writes:

Jundallah terrorists have carried out numerous deadly bombings and assassination attempts in Iran, including several attacks in Iran’s Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan.

On December 15, 2010, a terrorist attack in the southeastern Iranian city of Chabahar killed at least 38 people and wounded more than 90 others, including women and children. The US-backed Jundullah group later claimed responsibility for the deadly bomb attack.

Jundallah leader Abdolmalek Rigi was arrested by Iranian intelligence forces in February 2010 and executed in June of the same year for 79 counts of crimes, including armed robbery, bombing operations and armed attacks on police officers as well as civilians.

Rigi stated in his confessions that he had dealings with the US government and was promised unlimited funds and resources for “waging an insurgency” inside Iran. He was reportedly on his way to meet with senior American authorities at a major US base in Kazakhstan when his plane was brought down by Iranian forces.

It is probably even a minute point to debate whether it was Israeli backed terrorists or U.S. backed terrorists.

In the greater scheme of things both countries ought to be considered the same entity anyway.

They are both on the same team, with the same allies, doing whatever it takes to find a means to accomplish the ends.

The cost of the UK closed circuit TV system, used to spy on citizens, is failing to prevent crime despite running a price tag of 1% of the national debt

An investigative report reveals that the UK spy camera system has exploded far beyond any estimates previously provided by government data.

A review of newly released data, obtained by the organization Big Brother Watch throw a Freedom of Information act request, reveals that nearly 50% more cameras have been installed than police said were in place just last year.

Last year police reported there were only about 30,000 cameras in place with the official tally now reporting there are over 51,600 cameras in place.

The total price tag for installing the CCTV cameras for just the last 4 years has reached over UK£ 500 million, which is nearly $800 million dollars, an amount which equates to 1% of the national debt.

Perhaps even more shocking is the price tag for the cameras, with councils paying up to UK£63,447.49 per camera, or over $100,000 dollars per camera.

Yet for all of the cost and sacrificed privacy, the cameras are doing nothing to deter crime. In fact the data shows that street lights are more effective than the cameras.

While most Americans can psychologically disassociate with the reality that Great Britain’s citizens live with on a daily basis the reality is this 24 hour surveillance lifestyle has already began to seep into U.S. culture like a cancerous plague.

A recent report reveal the NYPD to has installed a camera system that monitors every single city block completely integrated with an artificial intelligence system.

The system is so powerful that it can be queried to provide a complete list of people were certain clothing and track them all in real time as they move across the city… and a hell of a lot more.

There is also reports of a similar high-tech spy center being ran by police in Los Angeles.

Undoubtedly, there are many more in locations across the entire U.S.

• There is one CCTV camera per 1,600 people in Birmingham
• It is no surprise that Birmingham has topped the table. Until 2011 „Project
  Champion‟6 was in motion, one of the most outrageous abuses of surveillance
  equipment in modern times.
• Birmingham City Council themselves admit to the fact that “It’s not surprising”
  if you move around Birmingham and feel “like you’re being watched”.8 The

“We found there’s a widespread belief that cameras deter crime but if you look at the academic research, that’s simply not the case,” he said.

“If you look at research into car parking, cameras proved useful. But if you look at street crime, street lighting proved more effective.

UK surveillance culture, ‘runaway’

The UK’s leading privacy campaign group says the British government has developed an out-of-control ‘surveillance culture’ as it revealed the true cost of the country’s CCTV cameras.

The all-out invasion on the British public’s privacy comes as predictions have been made about a recurrence of the unprecedented unrest in August considering the dire situation of the British economy and employment.

After 60 minutes aired a special on the NYPD’s artificial intelligence backed NYC spy system, reporters learned the center is in fact co-operated and owned by Wall Street’s biggest banks.

Previously 60 minutes ran a special on New York City’s high tech spy center being used to fight terrorism using a massive network of cameras that is fully integrated with the latest state of the art artificial intelligence programs.

Following that report, journalist noticed some things out of place in the story and started digging.

What they learned, is while the 60 minutes report focuses on the system being used to fight terrorism, the center security serves as a personal spy system for Wall Street’s largest banks.

On September 25, 2011, just eight days after the Occupy Wall Street protests began in Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan, the much acclaimed CBS News program, 60 Minutes, aired a fawning look at the thousands of surveillance cameras affixed to buildings and lampposts throughout New York City.  The cameras feed live images of people going about their everyday lives to a $150 million computer center equipped with artificial intelligence to integrate and analyze the daily habits of what are, for the most part, law-abiding Americans.

The thrust of the 60 Minutes  program was the fine job of counter terrorism being done by the NYPD and its Commissioner, Raymond Kelly. It was a triumph in public relations for a police department about to go on an assault spree –  pepper spraying and punching  peaceful protestors;  kicking, ramming and arresting journalists attempting to cover the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations.

On air, the reporter, Scott Pelley, said the surveillance center was “housed in a secret location,”  as one would expect of a real counter terrorism program — as opposed to a program to simply quash dissent.  Mr. Pelley also said the program was run by the NYPD.  As it turns out, neither of those assertions were accurate.

The New York Times, the worldwide news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP), Wired Magazine, the New York City Council had all previously reported the location of the supposedly super secret counter terrorism  center on their public web sites: 55 Broadway in the bowels of the financial district.  What was a secret about the operation, and not reported by 60 Minutes to its viewers, despite being well aware of the facts, is that the center is jointly staffed and operated by the NYPD along with the largest Wall Street firms – the same firms under investigation in 50 states for mortgage and foreclosure fraud and widely credited with causing the Nation’s economic collapse.  The Wall Street firms that were involuntarily  bailed out by the 99% are now policing the 99%.

In a telephone conversation with the co-producer of the program, Robert Anderson, he conceded that he was aware of the presence of the Wall Street firms in the center.  It would have been hard to miss them.  The facility is designed with three long rows of computer workstations.  The outside of each cubicle bears a brass plaque with the names of the occupants: Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorganChase, etc.

You won’t find photographs showing these firms in the surveillance center in any U.S. corporate news outlet, but a foreign news service has them openly displayed – a news organization servicing countries of the former Soviet Union.  These photos were taken during a large gathering of reporters and photographers at the invitation of the NYPD.  As shown in the photos, the event was hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Very secret counter terrorism operation, indeed, with global reporters and photographers coming and going in both 2010 and 2011.

As we reported in October, the surveillance plan became known as the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative and the facility was dubbed the Lower Manhattan Security Coordination Center. It operates round-the-clock with 2,000 private spy cameras owned by Wall Street firms and other corporations, together with approximately 1,000 more owned by the NYPD.  At least 700 additional cameras scour the midtown area and also relay their live feeds into the downtown center where all film is integrated for analysis.  The $150 million of taxpayer money that’s funding this corporate/police spying operation comes from both city and Federal sources, with the cost rising daily as more technology is added.

Not only is it unprecedented for corporations under serial and ongoing corruption probes to be allowed to spy on law abiding citizens under the imprimatur of the largest police force in the country, but the legality of the operation by the NYPD itself is highly questionable.

During the 60 Minutes program (at elapsed time 8:50), the following exchange takes place between the reporter Scott Pelley and Jessica Tisch, the NYPD Director of Counterterrorism Policy and Planning who played a significant role in developing the Lower Manhattan Security Coordination Center. (Tisch is in her early thirties and did not come up through the ranks of counter terrorism or law enforcement. She is the granddaughter and one of the heirs to the fortune of now-deceased billionaire Laurence Tisch, who built the Loews Corporation.  Her father, James Tisch, is the CEO of the Loews Corporation and was elected by Wall Street banks to sit on the Federal Reserve Bank of  New York until 2013,  representing the public’s interest.  Ms. Tisch is apparently standing in for the public’s interest in this surveillance operation:  rather than public hearings, Ms. Tisch drafted the guidelines for the program herself.)

Pelley: “Tisch showed us how the system can search for a suspicious person based on a description – a red shirt for example.”

Tisch: “And I can call up in real time all instances where a camera caught someone wearing a red shirt.”

Pelley: “So the computer looks essentially through all the video, finds all of the red shirts and puts it together for you.”

Tisch: “Video canvasses that used to take days and weeks to do, you’ll now be able to do with the snap of a finger.”

Tisch snaps her fingers for added emphasis.

Unfortunately, electronic surveillance of individuals at the snap of a finger is exactly what New York State law prohibits.  New York Code, Section 700.15,  requires a warrant for video surveillance and the warrant is only issuable “Upon probable cause to believe that a particularly  described  person  is committing, has committed, or is about to commit a particular designated offense.”  Blanket surveillance of hundreds of thousands of law-abiding citizens with cameras that pan, tilt and rotate to track individuals to the doorsteps of their psychiatrist, debt counselor, Alcoholics Anonymous, or prosecutor’s office – shared with corporations that employ hundreds of thousands of these same individuals, is breathtaking in its blatant disregard for privacy rights.

In a letter dated March 26, 2009 to Police Commissioner Kelly, following years of being stonewalled with its Freedom of Information Law requests for more details on the surveillance program, the New York Civil Liberties Union warned:  “…virtually all of the enormous information gathered and maintained by the system will be about people engaged in wholly lawful activity…we believe this entire enterprise is illegitimate and inappropriate…”

In a 2006 formal report on the camera surveillance network, the NYCLU noted that “Today’s surveillance camera is not merely the equivalent of a pair of eyes. It has super human vision.  It has the capability to zoom in and ‘read’ the pages of the book you have opened while waiting for a train in the subway.”  The report further explained that “New York City has a long and troubled history of police surveillance of individuals and groups engaged in lawful political protest and dissent.  Between 1904 and 1985 the NYPD compiled some one million intelligence files on more than 200,000 individuals and groups — suspected communists, Vietnam War protesters, health and housing advocates, education reform groups, and civil rights activists.”

An even bigger problem for New York City came on January 23 of this year when the U.S. Supreme Court issued a rare unanimous decision in United States v. Jones.  All nine justices agreed that the use of an electronic GPS tracking device placed on an automobile by law enforcement constituted a search under the Fourth Amendment and required a warrant.

Writing the decision for the court, Justice Antonin Scalia stated: “As Justice Brennan explained in his concurrence in Knotts, Katz did not erode the principle ‘that when the Government does engage in physical intrusion of a consti­tutionally protected area in order to obtain information, that intrusion may constitute a violation of the Fourth Amendment.”

Writing a concurring opinion, Justice Sonia Sotomayor expanded on the potential for unconstitutional law enforcement actions using electronic surveillance devices: “GPS monitoring generates a precise, comprehensive record of a person’s public movements that reflects a wealth of detail about her familial, political, professional, religious, and sexual associations. See, e.g., People v. Weaver, 12 N. Y. 3d 433, 441–442, 909 N. E. 2d 1195, 1199 (2009) (‘Disclosed in [GPS] data . . . will be trips the indisputably private na­ture of which takes little imagination to conjure: trips to the psychiatrist, the plastic surgeon, the abortion clinic, the AIDS treatment center, the strip club, the criminal defense attorney, the by-the-hour motel, the union meet­ing, the mosque, synagogue or church, the gay bar and on and on.’) The Government can store such records and efficiently mine them for information years into the future.”

Electronic surveillance cameras deployed in New York City, however, do for more than GPS devices: they film the individual, their features, their companions, and show just what doorsteps they are entering in their comings and goings throughout the day; week after week; 24/7.

What zealous prosecutor or Wall Street whistleblower or investigative reporter is safe from being targeted by this surveillance juggernaut.

The electronic tracking capability described by Ms. Tisch on 60 Minutes, where an individual in the snap of a finger is tracked all over Manhattan, with no warrant and no more probable cause than wearing a red shirt, seems just what Justices Scalia and Sotomayor had in mind as illegal activities.

Mara Verheyden-Hilliard and Carl Messineo are civil rights attorneys who co-founded the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund.  They have filed a class action lawsuit against Police Commissioner Kelly, Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York over the arrest on October 1, 2011 of more than 700 peaceful protestors on the Brooklyn Bridge.  Ms. Verheyden-Hilliard had this to say about the sprawling surveillance program in New York City:

“The clearly stipulated and clearly defined requirement of probable cause, a central guarantee that protects individuals from over-reaching police authority, has been eviscerated in practice and in policy by the all-pervasive surveillance tools that make certain people and groups the ‘usual suspects’ in an environment that authorizes racial, religious and political profiling as the de facto law of the land. The NYPD is engaged in mass surveillance and mass aggregation of data on persons who not only have engaged in no criminal activity, but for whom there is no probable cause or individualized suspicion to believe they have engaged, or are engaged, in criminal activity. This is a perversion of civil rights and civil liberties by the government that is spreading across the country.”

Chris Dunn, Associate Legal Director of the NYCLU, said in response to my question concerning  the significance to New Yorkers of the Jones Supreme Court decision: “This decision opens the door to the argument that police camera systems that systematically track the movements and whereabouts of people in public places trigger constitutional scrutiny.  We have long believed that LMSI [Lower Manhattan Security Initiative]  violates the privacy rights of law-abiding New Yorkers, and this ruling from the Supreme Court supports that view.”  (Mr. Dunn is also an adjunct professor at the NYU School of Law where he teaches in the Civil Rights Clinic and he authors the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties column in the New York Law Journal.  He has written a detailed analysis of the United States v. Jones decision in his current column.)

Mr. Dunn’s opinion is buttressed by a powerful corporate law firm, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale, which ironically lists among its clients the Wall Street firms Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and JPMorganChase.  The firm co-authored the 2007 report for the Constitution Project titled: “Public Video Surveillance: A Guide to Protecting Communities and Preserving Civil Liberties.”

The report singles out New York, interpreting its law as follows: “Several state statutes regulate aspects of public use of video surveillance.  In New York, for example, video surveillance can only be conducted as part of a police investigation into the allegedly criminal behavior of an individual pursuant to a warrant.  Because of what the statute terms ‘the reasonable expectation of privacy under the constitution of this state or of the United States,’ the bar for authorizing or approving such a warrant is set quite high, and the alleged crimes must be quite serious.  Arizona, in contrast, merely makes it a misdemeanor for a person to use video ‘surveillance’ in a public place without posting notice.”

This vast surveillance program in New York City has had no public hearings to develop proper guidelines, no public overseers, no legislative mandate and is operating with no checks and balances.

The City Council’s  Committee on Public Safety, chaired by Peter Vallone, did tour the Lower Manhattan Security Coordination Center on June 16, 2011.  The minutes of the meeting on the City Council’s  public web site list only the date, time and location.  A phone call and email request to Mr. Vallone’s office to make the full minutes available to the public was met with silence.

I asked Michael Cardozo’s office, Corporation Counsel for New York City, to give me a statement as to the legality of this NYPD-Wall Street surveillance program.  Mr. Cardozo declined to be quoted but his associate, Deputy Communications Director, Connie Pankratz, said: “It is perfectly legal to use security cameras in public spaces.  This is no different than having a police officer watch or follow someone on a public street.”

That analogy is like comparing a pea shooter to a heat-seeking missile.  These cameras can pan, tilt, rotate and zoom.  The live feeds are integrated with cameras from all over Manhattan which can simultaneously analyze the images using artificial intelligence to look for specific human features or clothing colors.  To quote Ms. Tisch on 60 Minutes: “Nobody has a system like this.”

I filed two Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests with the NYPD in the Fall of 2011.  New York State has an inspiring sunshine law, which acknowledges that “The people’s right to know the process of governmental decision-making and to review the documents and statistics leading to determinations is basic to our society. Access to such information should not be thwarted by shrouding it with the cloak of secrecy or confidentiality. The legislature therefore declares that government is the public’s business and that the public, individually and collectively and represented by a free press, should have access to the records of government in accordance with the provisions of this article…”

Notwithstanding the noble intent of the law and notwithstanding the legislative mandate to respond in 5 business days or a period reasonable to the request, both of my requests received a written response stating it would take five months to answer — five months or 30 times longer than the legislative intent.  The NYPD has 15,000 non uniformed employees available to fulfill the legislative mandate to permit participatory government.  If it wanted to honor the legislative mandate, it could assign more staff to the Records Access Department.  Until it does, it is functioning in contravention of the state legislative mandate.

In the 2010 book “Heat and Light: Advice for the Next Generation of Journalists” by Mike Wallace and Beth Knobel, the producer of the 60 Minutes episode on the surveillance center, Robert Anderson, is quoted as follows:

“Mike [Wallace] has always said that we are seekers of truth, and that’s what we are.  We are seekers of truths that people would be better off knowing, and that they probably don’t know.  And we are looking for something that is hopefully of some significance, because the more significant it is, the better the story it is for us.”

There are two significant stories at the surveillance center at 55 Broadway.  The first is that the largest police force in the country has secretly deputized as its partners the same giant Wall Street firms that are serially charged with looting the public but never prosecuted, no matter how big the crime. The second significant story is that the largest police force in the country has tapped the public coffers to the tune of $150 million to operate what legal experts say is an illegal program.

Kevin Tedesco, Executive Director of 60 Minutes, had this to say about my concerns with the program:  “We find your inquiry somewhat puzzling.  This was a story about defending against terrorism, probably the most important issue of our times.  You have only to look at 60 Minutes’ record to see that we frequently report on Wall Street institutions, the most recent of which, “Prosecuting Wall Street” was broadcast on December 4.  Robert Anderson, the producer of the story on the command center, produced  “The Next Housing Shock,”  an investigation about misleading and fake mortgage documentation that cast a harsh light on financial institutions when it was broadcast on August 7 and April 3.  No one told us what to report or not report in those stories and neither did anyone in this one.  We appreciate the chance to respond.”

I willingly concede that 60 Minutes regularly provides outstanding investigative reports.  I have previously referenced their groundbreaking  work in my writing.  Robert Anderson’s work on “The Next Housing Shock” brings the audacity and collusiveness of the foreclosure crimes into sharp focus and admirably serves the public interest.

But rather than deflecting my criticisms, Mr. Tedesco ends up making my case by pointing to the December 4 broadcast of “Prosecuting Wall Street.”  This is a story alleging systemic corruption at Citigroup made by a Vice President of the firm, Richard Bowen; a man so confident of his facts that he testified before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission.   Mr. Bowen had his duties reassigned and was retaliated against and told to remain off the premises once he brought the corruption to the attention of the most senior executives at Citigroup.

Charges like these have been made for over a decade against Citigroup by other key employees.  No senior executives have ever been prosecuted.  Now a Citigroup representative sits alongside police in a high tech center where it can monitor the comings and goings of pedestrians, including potential whistleblowers.  If that’s not significant, I don’t know what is.

Failing to learn lessons from the Iraq war, British lawmakers overwhelmingly defeat a motion that would rule out invading Iran by a vote of 285 to 6.

Earlier today CASMII (Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran) reported a major crack in the western alliance against Iran could be developing.

Specifically, the British House of Commons proposed a motion to rule the invading Iran, citing a report saying the UK economy would be devastated by the cost of entering an addition war against Syria or Iran .

Conservative lawmakers who introduced the bill also warned of Europe being duped into another war based on fabricated intelligence reports like they had been with the Iraq war.

The motion also received support from lawmakers in Germany.

The news of the motion raised a sense of hope that world could be averting a crisis which is shaping up to turn into an all out war with Syria, Iran, Russia, India and China.

The sense of hope was crushed as the British House of Commons voted by an overwhelming majority of 285 no votes and 6 yes votes not pass the motion.

House of Commons’ motion to rule out use of force: First crack in western hawkish alliance against Iran

The first major crack in the western alliance against Iran has now surfaced in the UK’s House of Commons by a rebellious Conservative back bencher who has for the first time in a western country proposed a motion against the hawkish western Iran policy. The anti-war groups activists and peace activists all around the world will see this as a promising sign to build a strong lobbying and media campaign to successfully oppose the war drive on Iran.

For the first time in many years, the UK Parliament has held a debate  specifically on Iran.  The Motion tabled by the Conservative MP, John Baron (Basildon and Billericay), secured a debate on 20/02/2012 on a Motion calling on the government to rule out the use of force against Iran, arguing for calm and vigorous diplomacy as the only sensible option.

John Baron intends “to divide the house to test the view and will of Parliament”.  He states that “The catalyst for the latest round of condemnation against Iran has been the IAEA’s November report. But close reading reveals no ‘smoking gun’. There is no evidence of attempts to produce nuclear weapons, or of a decision to do so. Much is made of Western intelligence reports – but Iraq should have told us to be careful on this front.”

This development clearly reveals the gigantic hoax in the Western allegations of Iranian nuclear threat that the US and UK,  while constantly prodded by Israel, have used in recent years to once again deceive the world nearly ten years after their  fabricated and false dossiers paved the  way for the criminal and Illegal invasion of Iraq.

In fact, many British and Western parliamentarians who voted for war on Iraq, claimed afterwards that they had been ‘misled’.  The motion by John Baron reflects this sentiment and highlights the disarray in the British and western political establishment.

Systematic and orchestrated lobbying of parliamentarians is therefore crucial to avert the gathering tide of sanctions, covert war and military attack on Iran.  Parliamentarians and key decision makers must be publicly questioned by groups of activists and individuals in their constituencies and held accountable for their positions and their evidence on which they might support sanctions, interference or military strike on Iran.

The lobbying work should be backed up by a systematic campaign to challenge  the western biased media which played a decisive role in manipulating public opinion and paving the path to the invasion of Iraq.  Well-informed and sustained media work such as writing letters to editors and journalists to challenge lies and distortions, writing articles, and giving media interviews are crucial in mobilising public opinion against sanctions and war and towards negotiations without pre-conditions. Local and national antiwar organisations are vital for building a strong lobbying and media campaign against the war drive on Iran. On 4th February 2012, Anti-war activists in many cities in the US demonstrated against sanctions, military attack, covert operations and domestic interference in Iran.  CASMII for many years has been consistently campaigning against domestic interference and any type of sanctions as destructive to Iranian society and a prelude to war.   The crushing sanctions on the Iranian economy and the massive military build-up in the Persian Gulf have prompted the main anti-war organisations in the UK and the US to now rally around the slogans of No Sanctions, No interference, No assassinations alongside the slogan of No War on Iran.

CASMII calls upon all concerned Iranian and non-Iranians to urgently join and build national campaigns in the UK (Stop the War Coalition), the US and other Western countries to mobilise public opinion against the sanctions and war drive on Iran by building a strong lobbying and media campaign.  A peaceful resolution to the stand-off between the West and Iran would benefit all geopolitical parties involved and would avoid a doomsday scenario in which there will be no winners.

UK MPs endorse warmongering policies

British lawmakers have overwhelmingly rejected a motion at the House of Commons to rule out an invasion of Iran in line with their government’s warmongering policies.

The back-bench motion was initiated by Conservative MP John Baron and urged the British government to rule out the use of force against Iran.

In line with their government’s warmongering approach, members of parliament (MPs) voted down the motion with 285 ‘no’ votes, 6 ‘yeses’ and two abstentions.

[...]Meanwhile, Stop the War convener Lindsey German lashed out at lawmakers and pledged an intensive campaign by activists to convince MPs to end their “shocking” refusal to learn from the slaughter they helped to unleash in Iraq and Afghanistan nearly 10 years ago.

German’s approach was endorsed by Newport Labour MP Paul Flynn, who said that he would continue to oppose a war against Iran “at every opportunity.”

“It would not be the first time in history that the minority had been proved right”, he said, adding that the Commons debate had been an opportunity to “look into the abyss of the unimaginable hell of a war with Iran.”

U.S. officials step up cyber terrorism rhetoric, warning Cyber Armageddon is inevitable, and demanding “cyber terrorists” be subject to NDAA battlefield detention.

NSA Warns Anonymous Can Take Out Entire Power Grid

U.S. officials are invoking the specter of an all out cyber Armageddon in order justify draconian laws to clamp down on the Internet.

In the latest round of hype lawmakers are hammering home the point that personal freedoms and civil liberties must take the back seat to the “imminent” threat of cyberwar being launched by “enemies of the state”, either at home or abroad.

U.S. legislatures say that the gloom and doom talk taking place in congress is quite real, claiming threats to national security from online hackers is a clear and present danger.

Russia Today goes on to report that the situation is quite over-hyped and will soon lead to American citizens being labeled as terrorists just for voicing dissent online.

The report goes on to cite U.S officials saying the The Hacker Group Anonymous are terrorists with the ability to take the entire U.S. power grid offline.

Senator Lindsey Graham is then quoted as saying it ridiculous to ever think that Americans who commit terrorists style crimes on U.S. soil would not be subjected to NDAA style “battlefield detention”, aka. indefinite detention without the right to a trial.

Anonymous: Protesters or Terrorists? Fog of cyberwar obscures truth

As the hype over impending cybergeddon heats up in Congress, could American citizens soon be considered terrorists for simply voicing dissent online? In the fog of cyberwar, freedom may be first to go.

Cyberwar. Some dismiss it as hype, fueled by government contractors eager for profit, without much concern about the consequences to the net or to freedom. But in Congress, the gloom-and-doom talk about the need for American “cyberwar” preparedness lately is quite real. And for some lawmakers, it’s a clear and present danger.

“A cyberattack is on its way. We will suffer a catastrophic cyber attack,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., recently said at a hearing. “The clock is ticking.”

The Pentagon has even developed a policy that now deems major cyber attacks to be acts of war – which could merit a military response. Bombs for bits, so to speak. “If you shut down our power grid,” an anonymous Defense official told the Wall Street Journal, “maybe we will put a missile down one of your smokestacks.”

Traditionally the suspicion has been aimed at foreign cyber enemies. Hackers from China, North Korea and Russia often named as the culprits in the mainstream media. But in this year of the protest, the invisible enemy has a domestic face:

Anonymous.

It’s a leaderless hacker movement with a political purpose. One that has joined forces with the Occupy Wall Street movement to fight corporations, banks and governments.

“We stand for freedom,” says one anonymous protester. “We stand for freedom of speech. The power of the people.”

Are they cyber protesters or cyber terrorist? For the U.S. government, there may be little difference between the two.

Just today, media reports revealed that the head of the National Security Agency sees Anonymous hackers as a serious threat. In private documents and meetings with White House officials, Gen. Keith Alexander warned that Anonymous take down the U.S. power grid in the US through a cyber attack.

“There is a deep insinuation that dissent is somehow connected to or an accessory to terrorism,” said J.A. Myerson, an independent journalist who covers the Occupy Wall Street movement. “That’s a really horrifying prospect.”

A horrifying prospect that is now a reality for a government busy fighting the endless War on Terror.

Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, said it would be “crazy” to exempt terrorist suspects who are Americans and are arrested inside the country from battlefield-style detention.

“If you are an American citizen and you betray your country, you’re going to be held in military custody and you’re going to be questioned about what you know,” Graham said on the Senate floor. “You’re not going to be given a lawyer. ”

And freedom of speech and the internet may soon follow. Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-Connecticut) has been pushing for the U.S. government to develop an internet shut-off switch which he says is needed to defend the economic infrastructure from a cyberterrorist attack.

“Right now China can disconnect parts of its internet in case of war,” Lieberman said on CNN. “We need to have that too.”

And that, says Retired Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, is pushing the U.S. down the road to tyranny.

“I don’t think they’re doing this based on their fear of terrorists,” Wilkerson said. “I think they’re doing it based on their ultimate fear of the Occupy Wall Street cum other movements in this country.”

And as Anonymous and the Occupy Wall Street movements grow, so will those fears. Dangerously blurring the lines between who’s a freedom fighter and who is a terrorist.

Microsoft reveals Google hacked Internet Explorer, just like Safari, so they could track people’s online activity everywhere on the internet.

Apple recently reported that Google hacked their Safari web browser so they could track users online activity on MAC computers and notebooks as well as on all of Apple’s popular handheld electronics with online capabilities such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod.

That announcement made Microsoft engineers suspicious that Google may have employed similar measures to bypass Internet Explorer’s security settings to track all of IE users online activity as well. Sure enough, Microsoft has come forward to say Google has employed a different hack which achieved the same results on the world’s most popular web browser.

I was to place I bet, I would bet that Mozilla engineers will soon make the same announcement about the Firefox web browser.

Microsoft Calls Google a Cookie Monster

Safari users aren’t the only ones who may be unintentionally picking up tracking cookies from Google as they surf the Web. The search provider also stuffs Internet Explorer with cookies, according to Microsoft. The methodology is different, but the result is the same. In response, Google said the result is due to IE using outdated and impractical standards.

Google is tracking users of the Internet Explorer Web browser without their knowledge, Microsoft has asserted.

After news emerged last week that Google had bypassed the privacy settings of Apple’s Safari browser, Microsoft researchers began looking into whether the search giant was also playing fast and loose with IE’s settings.

However, IE 9 has an additional privacy feature called “Tracking Protection” that blocks the method Google is using, Microsoft said. Users without IE 9 or who have the feature turned off may be susceptible.

Google “basically hacked IE differently than they hacked Safari, but the result is pretty much the same — they overrode the browsers’ capability to block cookies and prevent reporting,” Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. Google “appears to be intentionally violating the privacy rights of users of third party products.”

Google’s actions are “concerning at any level, being misleading to consumers who expect these [privacy] controls to be honored and working,” Chris Babel, CEO of TrustE, told TechNewsWorld.

What Google Did

Internet Explorer uses the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) feature to block third-party cookies unless the site they’re from sends along a Compact Policy (CP) statement indicating how it will use the cookie and stating that it won’t track the user. That policy must be in machine-readable form.

In other words, P3P appears to work on the honor system. Tell it you’ll comply and it OKs you. But if you’re sneaky enough to lie, it will let you get by anyway.

Microsoft said Google gets around P3P by leveraging a nuance that requires browsers to ignore any undefined policies they encounter. It sends along a P3P CP that is not in machine-readable form and is, therefore, undefined.

With Safari, Google used an iFrame that loaded a page containing a meta refresh to a Google ad link. If the user wasn’t logged into Google, the response directed the browser back to Google’s DoubleClick advertising platform. If the user was logged into Google, the user was directed first to Google’s authentication service and then to DoubleClick.

In the case of Safari, Google claimed the whole thing was the accidental byproduct of its creating a temporary communication link between the browser and Google servers.

Google got around Microsoft’s privacy policies too

If you read the recent reports that explain how Google exploited a flaw in Apple’s mobile browser to potential spy on its users, you might have wondered if you were among the victims. As it turns out, engineers at Microsoft pondered the same thing.

Now following revelations that Google sent scripts to the mobile version of Apple’s Safari application to keep tracks on its users, the programmers behind Microsoft’s Internet Explorer are learning that they were also impacted by the flaw.

A researcher at Stanford University recently identified an attempt by Google in which the company bypassed the privacy settings of users of the popular Apple Safari browser by means of forcing the app to accept a small cookie file that they could then watch to monitor online activity. Not only did the maneuver allow Google to exploit millions of users of competing products, but it also meant that millions potentially had their Internet history unknowingly monitored by the search engine giants.

In the days since the news broke, Google has downplayed the development and has repeatedly insisted that the exploit was meant to make mobile browsing more seamless. “[W]e designed this so that the information passing between the user’s Safari browser and Google’s servers was anonymous — effectively creating a barrier between their personal information and the web content they browse,” a spokesperson explained.

Google claim to be developing a work-around and insist that no harm was ever intended, but now Microsoft is learning that they were exploited as well.

“When the IE team heard that Google had bypassed user privacy settings on Safari, we asked ourselves a simple question: Is Google circumventing the privacy preferences of Internet Explorer users too?” Internet Explorer executive Dean Hachamovitch writes this week on his blog. “We’ve discovered the answer is yes: Google is employing similar methods to get around the default privacy protections in IE and track IE users with cookies.”

This revelation comes after Microsoft stepped up and shunned Google over its escapade with the Safari browser. “Apparently, Google has been able to track users of Apple’s Safari browser while they surf the web on their Apple iPhones, iPads and Macs,” Internet Explorer Business and Marketing General Manager Ryan Gavin blogged last week. “This type of tracking by Google is not new. The novelty here is that Google apparently circumvented the privacy protections built into Apple’s Safari browser in a deliberate, and ultimately, successful fashion.”

Little did the IE team know that similar success was made by Google after they managed to also bypass Microsoft’s policies.

In support of Microsoft, at least it’s reassuring to know that someone still uses Internet Explorer — even if it’s for malicious means. Netscape Navigator has yet to comment as to if they were effected as well.

Tens of thousands of Pakistanis protest continued assassinations and airstrikes on Pakistan soil that have left thousands of innocent bystanders dead.

Pakistan US relations reach point of no return

Massive rallies were held today in Pakistan in response to over 2,000 soldiers being killed by NATO forces and constant drone strikes that leave innocent woman and children dead. The protests also denounced the U.S. assassination attacks by U.S. military forces on Pakistani soil.

The sparking point for the rallies began when a U.S airstrike killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November. Since the U.S. has repeatedly ignored requests to end or coordinate them with Pakistani intelligence in order to prevent so-called collateral damage.

While it may be hard to imagine the anger of Pakistani citizens given all of the one-sided reporting and anti-terrorism propaganda reported in the corporate media, anyone who objectively questions the morality situation can clearly understand there anger. As reported some time ago, 1 in 7 U.S. drone strikes worldwide kills a child. In Pakistan those statistics are worse, were in 1 in 3 drone strikes kills a child. Furthermore, just imagine Russia or Iranian special forces conducting raids every day to assassinate people here inside the U.S. Also imagine, when every a target is assassinated any innocent bystander, be they a man, women or child, who is unfortunate to be in the surrounding area is also killed as part of collateral damage.

Press TV: It does seem that anti-US sentiment is growing increasingly in Pakistan as Washington refuses to stop its drone attacks. Can, however, action on the popular front force the Pakistani government to make a more demanding position against the drone strikes?

Ahmad: There is no doubt Pakistani people are really getting to a point of no return about the US Pakistan relations and the real issue that Pakistani people are facing is indifference by the leadership.

There was a rally of about a thousand people in Islamabad which had a cluster of leaders but hardly one or two of them could be elected from a constituency in a general election which is fair.

So the problem is that all these people who are taking credit or trying to cultivate on this anti-US sentiment do not have much credibility in the people. The ones who have actually, are not in the parliament.

That is the dilemma of Pakistan, and I am talking about the newly emerging opposition which is led by Imran Khan, that is not really the one which has some presence in the parliament but they have to mobilize people and he has done that as well earlier.

The problem in an overall sense in Pakistan is that there are multiple centers apart and everyone is looking after its own particular spheres interests. Pakistan’s overall ownership is not with any leadership or institution.

For example, there comes a point when military is being hurt by the American actions, then definitely there are going to be stronger actions. If politicians are really facing some music, they will become kind of an opposition and similarly the civil society or the media. But there is no general consensus as to how to deal with Pak-US relations in the next say decade or so.

Press TV: We know that the relations between the two sides did become tense after those soldiers were killed in the US drone strikes; however, after that phase, we have seen the drone attacks continue and some observers were telling us that this is coming where the tacit, support or acceptance of the Pakistan authorities.

So basically how bad are relations between Islamabad and Washington after the US air strike in November? When you say that there are different versions of policies in the Pakistani government, are you saying that there is no unified policy in terms of relations with the United States?

Ahmad: There is no doubt about that, there is no unified policy; there is no doubt about that that there is some kind of tacit understanding between the Pakistan’s existing political elite which is led by Mr. Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, and other parties are really not taken into confidence or they are still siding with the US.

With the hope that in case there is a situation of a coup or something, Washington’s nod goes with the political elite that are on the fringes.

Only one or two political parties which are really serious are taking it up as an issue.

Now coming to the question of how Pakistan-US relations should be seen given this kind of understanding, after the attack that killed 24 Pakistani military men, Pakistan’s relations have gone to the lowest ebb, and I keep defining lowest ebb since Osama was killed in Abbottabad. I said the same and others said the same and then we had other incidents which really proved that, no, we have yet to explore the rock bottom and probably this is the rock bottom.

Pakistani intelligentsia, Pakistani media and of course Pakistani parliamentarian committees are really working on how should Pakistan set the agenda for the relations ahead. And the same is happening back there in Washington.

There was a resolution that has been tabled in front of Congress about the situation in Balochistan which really has a larger canvas in which, on the one hand, Balochistan is bordering Iran on the other Afghanistan, and the situation that you see in Afghanistan and relations, all the animosity with Iran, really puts Balochistan in a very different context.

So the US also is pondering about Pakistan-US relations in its own way by imposing sanctions, by trying to create and fuel all these organizations which are working for a kind of an agenda which is not theirs.

But at best, I would say that the Pakistani government is to be blamed for ignoring Balochistan despite its strategic significance, despite the Middle East resources and despite being the region making 40 percent of Pakistan’s geographical landmass.

So on the overall conclusion, I would simply say that Pakistan-US relations are not going to improve just because of one decision or the other. NATO supplies are not going to be restored very soon in a real sense of the word.

Seattle police clear cop who was recorded saying he was going to ‘make stuff up’ – fabricate felony robbery charges – against a man who was just beat and arrested.

An investigative report by local Seattle news outlets unveils the systematic disappearance of Police videos in cases where officers are alleged of wrongdoing. As part of that investigation, a video was recovered in which an officer was recorded telling the man he just arrested he was going to ‘make stuff up’ and file robbery charges against him to justify beating him.

Two men, who say they had just been robbed, were confronted at gunpoint by the Seattle police who claim they were searching for assault suspects. The men say claim they immediately “got on the ground and froze” after which the police proceeded to kick and beat them for no reason. Pictures taken after the incident show the men covered with cuts and bruises on their heads and chests.

The arresting police admit to kicking on of the victims in the chest but not in the head but justified their actions by telling a completely a different story. The police claim the men resisted arrest and refused to obey orders to freeze after which the police to chased them down and used necessary force to apprehend them.

But as KOMO-TV reports, in this incident was well as several other cases where the Seattle police are accused of misconduct, the police dashboard camera video vanished. While there was plenty of video footage taken prior to the arrest and immediately after the suspects apprehension video footage from 4 different police cars showing the time when the police actually approached the men and arrested them has vanished. KOMO-TV reports these missing videos are part of a collection of over 10,000 videos that have gone missing from the Seattle police departments database during disputed incidents.

With no video evidence to corroborate either sides story, an internal investigation cleared the police of any wrongdoing. However, KOMO-TV found the internal investigation ignored key evidence that corroborated the victims story. Specifically, they obtained several video recordings of after the arrests were made. One shows one of the men talking to the arresting officer inside the police car after the arrest. The recording reveals the arresting officer admitting he was going to fabricate felony robbery charges and just ‘make stuff up’. Another video shows the other man yelling in anger why did you kick me in the head? Why?” The officer replies “I kicked you in the chest. That’s all I did”.

The internal investigation report made no mention to the recording of the officer saying he was going to fabricate felony charges. It also made no reference to claims the arrested men saying that they has just been robbed.

Despite the new revelations by the KOMO-TV investigation, the police still remain cleared of wrongdoing.

Seattle Cop Who Threatened to ‘Make Stuff Up’ After Arrest Was Just ‘Bantering,’ Police Claim

The Seattle cop who threatened to “make stuff up” – fabricate felony robbery charges – after arresting two Seattle men for a misdemeanor, was only “bantering” with them, police now say. His comment was deemed by SPD as merely “inappropriate” since he never actually made up any charges.

Two young Seattle men, Josh Lawson and Christopher Franklin, filed a claim against the city last week seeking damages for excessive force and wrongful arrest. They say officer Brad Richardson, searching for two assault suspects on the night of Nov. 16, 2010 near Seattle Center, confronted them at gunpoint and wrongfully arrested them.

Though Richardson’s police incident report says the two “took off on a dead sprint down an alleyway,” Franklin says he and Lawson immediately “got on the ground and froze.” Lawson says Richardson kicked him in the head during the arrest and handcuffing; Richardson admits to kicking Lawson, but in the chest.

According to a video recorded while the officer and arrestees were enroute to jail, Richardson said the two were going to be charged “for robbery.”

“For robbery?” asks Franklin.

“Yeah,” says Richardson, “I’m gonna make stuff up.”

But the department’s response does not do much to clarify the officer’s threat to make up a felony charge. The response fails to mention that the victim never alleged he was robbed. The officer’s report also makes no mention of robbery. The two suspects were booked for misdemeanor assault, and never charged.

The duo did file an internal investigations complaint about the actions of Richardson and other officers, but all were cleared by the department’s Office of Professional Accountability (OPA).

Under questioning by City Council member Nick Licata at a public safety committee hearing last week, OPA director Kathryn Olson said her office’s exoneration of Richardson was justified. She also noted that the OPA complaint finding was posted online (see page 17) by SPD so the public could see it. But it makes no mention of the officer’s taped comments about fabricating charges.

Olson, OPA’s civilian auditor, who reviewed the case after KOMO-TV aired the dash-cam vid, said the short clip didn’t tell all. As the cop and suspects are riding along, she said:

There was bantering. The officer did say something along the lines of ‘I could make up stuff,’ but that was taken out of the context of a larger conversation that he was having. He was bantering, you know, not necessarily the best way to interact, but it had – what was involved actually was an assault, and so there was a reference to a robbery and jaywalking and it was very clear that he wasn’t intending to make up anything. Instead it was a bantering that was going on with the suspect – not necessarily the best practices – but there was no issue of dishonesty…

Facebook is rolling out a new data collection program which forces you to upload your government ID by claiming your account has been tampered with.

Recently, I tried logging on to Facebook using a WIFI mobile broadband wireless. Because I wasn’t logging on from the location I usually logon from Facebook locked out my account, claiming my account was being accessed from a suspicious location. In order to regain access to the account I was forced to upload my government ID to prove my identity. After several days of waiting for a real person to review the ID and verify my identity, my account was finally unlocked.

Since I am public person online, I didn’t mind uploading my id. However, for those very concerned about their privacy – especially in light of recent revelations of the military industrial complex and DHS backed online spy programs – this is a very alarming development.

As the following video explains, Facebook has a long history of lying to consumers about the retention policies of the data they collect.

There are many examples of how Facebook lied to their users. Now the FTC settlement was a joke. Facebook promised not to misrepresent privacy policies and submit to privacy audits over the next 20 years. Which doesn’t really matter for its user’s content which was already shared with the world. Talking Points Memo reports that Facebook has started to ask certain users to upload photos of their government issue ID cards. It’s all to test a new program which would verify new accounts and they promise to delete they will permanently delete the ID information once the account has been verified. But it seems like just another promise.

A massive march of veterans and military personnel marched on the Whitehouse to rally support for Ron Paul in this epic video which erupts into chants of “End The Fed”

No amount of astro-turfing or corporate media manipulation can mask the energy and enthusiasm that is out there for Ron Paul. No other candidate has supporters like this which is further reinforces just how fraudulent the GOP primary race.

Los Angeles becomes the first US city to hit gas prices of an all-time record high of over $5.00 a gallon following the Iran cutting oil supplies to Europe.

CBS news in Los Angeles alerts us to record gas prices reaching all-time highs, with the price of regular gas hitting $4.93 a gallon and premium surging to a record $5.12. As I have previously reported, analysts are forecasting the same prices to spread across the nation by summer due to the tensions with Iran.

European nations will even face higher prices, where some nations are already paying up to $12 a gallon for gas.

Gas Prices Soar Due To Tensions With Iran, Refinery Closures

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Soaring gas prices are giving drivers a new round of pain at the pump.

At an average of $4.06 a gallon, prices are at their highest point since last summer.

CBS2’s Kara Finnstrom reports that a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline is $4.93 a gallon at a Shell station in the Miracle Mile district.

It’s not unusual to have price jumps in February, but AAA and the Oil Price Information Service say gas prices were already at record highs.

Analysts say prices are on the rise due to escalating tensions with Iran over its nuclear program, as well as the closings of several California refineries for maintenance.

Twitter users unite to shine light on the corporate media blackout over Israel’s illegal detention of Khader Adnan, making the story top Twitter’s trending list.

As Americans rightfully fear that the NDAA will soon be used to detain U.S. citizens indefinitely without any trial or charges even being filed against them many don’t realize that the U.S and its allies has been engaging in this practice for years overseas.

Enter the story of Khader Adnan, a 33 year old Palestinian man who has been detained illegally in Israel for 65 days now, simply on accusations that he is a terrorist by the Israeli government while Israel refuses to charge him or even produce the smallest amount of evidence to prove their claim.

Adnan has been on a hunger strike for 65 days now, a protest which has killed lesser willed men than him. Despite facts that the detention is against international law and there is a growing chorus of human rights organizations calling for his release, including Amnesty International, the corporate media has been deafeningly silent about the story.

In order to force the media and world governments to acknowledge the human rights violations and intervene before the man dies, millions of Twitter users have kept Adnan’s story in the top 10 trending list.

Hashtagging Khader Adnan: A Global Protest on Twitter

Organizing a trending hashtag for Khader Adnan is just like organizing a large protest on the corner of the busiest and most crowded street in a city.

As you read this, Khader Adnan is very close to death. It is high time the Israeli state respond to calls by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Carter Center, and many other human rights organizations to release Adnan immediately.

As Adnan enters the 65th day of his hunger strike, activists and human rights defenders have joined this campaign. In addition, Amnesty International is calling for Israel to abolish the system of administrative detention.

Adnan is the victim of arbitrary detention. He is one of 309 Palestinians who are currently being held under Israeli administrative detention. Adnan, an administrative detainee, has not been charged, he has not been tried, and he does not know when the period of detention will end. Indefinite detention without a trial or charge is not permitted under International Law. It is considered a form of arbitrary detention which no country should be practicing.

 

Imagine if Adnan were an Iranian man on hunger strike in an Iranian jail. Would we have had to do this massive movement on Twitter to get the world’s attention? I don’t think so. The silence of the world community is deafening. The late awakening of the mainstream media is inexcusable.

While the mainstream media has failed to cover Adnan’s story, Twitter is at the forefront of the campaign to pressure the Israeli government to act. Twitter users have taken on the responsibility of filling the void created by the mainstream media.

At this moment, according to Topsy Twitter statistics, the hashtag #KhaderAdnan has been mentioned about 40,000 times on Twitter. It should be noted that this statistic excludes other related hashtags which would count in the thousands.

A hashtag is a special tool used in Twitter to mark certain tweets as part of one conversation. In order to enter a hashtag, one must add (#) before any keyword. When a hashtag is selected the user is directed to a page where they are able to read all Twitter updates using this specific hashtag. Whenever there is a big news story, a popular event, or even a revolution, people use a certain hashtag to contribute to that conversation. That is what Palestinian and other activists are doing now for Adnan.

For the past week, Twitter users have organized different hashtags in support of Adnan in their attempt to garner wider attention for his case. Users have successfully been able to have all the hashtags to trend globally for minutes or even an hour. Twitter users have posted using hashtags like #KhaderExists, #Dying2Live, #hungry4justice, #KhaderIsAlive, #Khader61days, #Respect4Khader, #Khader62 and #HungerStrike63days. The use of those hashtags was organized by a few activists who tell other people via private messages to start using the hashtag at a certain time. So, according to Twitter algorithms, the hashtag would be considered a breaking story and would trend globally immediately. Hundreds, if not thousands have joined to tweet under each hashtag causing it to become listed as a globally trending topic on Twitter, which would eventually get people who have never heard of Adnan to hear about him for the first time.

Organizing a trending hashtag for Adnan is just like organizing a large protest on the corner of the busiest and most crowded street in the city. Getting thousands of people to tweet about Adnan isn’t something easy, but Adnan’s non-violent struggle for his dignity has motivated thousands around the globe to do whatever they can to save this man’s life. Twitter users are currently Adnan’s strongest voice to the world.

In a new update to Twitter.com, there is now a section named “Discover” where Twitter users can read about the top 10 most popular stories from around the globe. Each time Adnan’s name trends, a story about him would remain in the “Discover” section’s top 10 stories for over 6 hours after it trends. This guarantees that more and more people will learn about Adnan via the social media tool Twitter, at a time the main stream media fails to report.

“Khader is the spark that we all needed in order to remember our common goal,” said Twitter user @sshusma who was one of organizers for some of the trending hashtags. She continued saying: “Khader is slowly dying before our eyes, we are watching as it happens and it feels grotesque that I sit in my home with the comfort of my computer while all i can do is tweet about it. On one hand i feel like i have to do what i can to help bring attention to him, on the other hand i feel guilty that this is what i do.”

 

As another part of the campaign to call on the media outlets to shed light on Adnan’s case, Twitter users started using #CoverKhader and #WaitingForKristof hashtags a few days ago to call on more media outlets to cover Adnan’s hunger strike. The second hashtag was targeted specifically at The New York Times’ correspondent Nicholas Kristof who published a piece in 2010 titled “Waiting for Gandhi”. Nicholas Kristof is known for his personalized stories where he narrates the struggle of individuals who fight for justice and dignity. But, in his article, “Waiting for Gandhi,” Kristof did not mention that many Palestinians were committed to non-violent struggle, such as those who were part of the first intifada. Kristof has not addressed Adnan and his hunger strike yet.

Arrabeh, occupied Palestinian territories - Randa Adnan panics every time the phone rings, and these days it never seems to stop. For now, it is mostly journalists, family, friends and supporters asking about her husband, Khader, who lies shackled by his hands and feet to a hospital bed in Israel, while his body wastes away.

Through sixty-four days of a hunger strike, the longest in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Randa Adnan has only been allowed to visit her husband twice, for a total of an hour, and each time surrounded by armed guards.

She speaks in a rush, a slight desperation in her otherwise resolute voice, as if time is running out and she must finish what she has to say before it is too late. Her two young daughters hang off her, demanding much of a woman who is dealing with a problem they do not fully comprehend.

“How can I tell my girls that they cannot bring sandwiches and juice to their father in the hospital,” she says, holding four-year-old Maali in her arms, who has the blue eyes of her father. The first time Maali visited the hospital with her mother she did not speak, hardly recognising the emaciated man that lay on the bed calling her name. Now she wakes up at night often, her mother says, crying out for her dad.

Hunger as protest

Khader Adnan was arrested by Israeli soldiers in the middle of the night on December 17, while at his home in the Palestinian village of Arrabeh on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Jenin. After eighteen days of interrogation - during which time 33-year-old Adnan says that he was tortured and humiliated by agents of Israel’s domestic security forces - he was imprisoned without charge or trial in what is called “administrative detention”. There are currently more than 300 Palestinians being held in administrative detention by Israel, without charge or trial, for renewable periods of six months, without any way of defending themselves.

“What makes the situation even worse,” says Abeer Baker, a member of the Law Faculty at Haifa University and head of the Legal Clinic on Prisoner’s Rights, “is the idea that these people have either no evidence, or no clear evidence, against them. They are not incriminated, because usually the army fails to bring any evidence. The proceedings are all secret. It is enough that the army comes and says they have evidence, or classified evidence.”

In order to protest his treatment, Adnan went on hunger strike the day after his arrest, a tactic he has used with success in the past and one common among Palestinian prisoners. During a previous incarceration, after an extended period of being in solitary confinement, Adnan went on hunger strike for twenty-eight days until the Israeli prison authorities put him back with other inmates.

In a letter released by his lawyers, Adnan addressed these words to the Palestinian people: “I starve myself for you to remain. I die for you to live. Stay with the revolution.”

“The Israeli occupation has gone to extremes against our people, especially prisoners. I have been humiliated, beaten, and harassed by interrogators for no reason, and thus I swore to God I would fight the policy of administrative detention to which I and hundreds of my fellow prisoners fell prey.”

USA Today just ran a story with a headline “PayPal founder gives $1.7M to Ron Paul super PAC”, which was quickly edited and had its headline and focus changed to spotlight Romney’s super PAC

Yet another blatant example of the corporate media’s outright manipulation, censorship and blackout of the Ron Paul campaign to become the GOP nominee for the 2012 presidential election rears its ugly head.

I was just alerted to USA today just published an article highlighting a massive $1.7 million donation given to Ron Paul’s Super PAC by PayPal founder Peter Thiel. In fact, Theil has given Paul Super Pac $2.2 million but that is another story.

However, upon viewing the article I found the article has been “updated” and had a new headline about Mitt Romney’s super Pac. Furthermore the stories original headline about the PayPal founders donation has now been being buried as a minute detail in the article.

The current USA Today article now shows the following text about the original story headline over half way down the article, which is now the only mention of Ron Paul in the entire story.

A report filed earlier today showed PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel donated $1.7 million last month to a super PAC supporting one of Romney’s GOP rivals, Ron Paul. Overall, Thiel has donated $2.6 million to Endorse Liberty, created last year to aid the Texas representative.

Note that the original text which shows in the Google search, “PayPal founder gives $1.7M to Ron Paul super PAC” doesn’t even appear in the new updated article.

After the dust has settled, the Maine GOP caucus reveals that deliberate vote fraud was committed. The question is was it to blatantly cheat Ron Paul out of a victory?

And for those that haven’t seen, this statistical analysis of the vote in South Carolina provides a convincing evidence that a computer algorithm was used to steal votes from Ron Paul and give them to Mitt Romney.
