First post of 2012! I’m so on top of things! BUT while my blog collects dust every now and then, my Twitter is updated all the time, so you can always get the latest news there.

Lots of cool stuff going on right now. Most excitingly, I’m working on a new album! It will be titled Variations In The Pattern and you can expect it out this summer. There’s real drums, real Wurlitzer piano (thanks to Nate!) and NO joke songs, if you can imagine that. I’m really excited about it, and I truly (madly, deeply) think this will be my best album yet. And I don’t always think that about every album I make. This one will be Pugless, but there will certainly be some more work from me and my Pugs in the future, don’t worry!

Speaking of the Pugs, “Freeze Tag” from our Banana Stand show in 2010 is featured on the new live compilation from the ‘Stand, out in June! Here is a video of that performance. Read more about the live comp and its release party here.

I have been doing lots of videos (covers, recording stuff, etc.). Go to my YouTube channel to watch those little nuggets of fool’s gold.

Spookies work is chugging along as well. We have two vinyl EP releases in the works, one being a split EP with The Minders. It will be amazing-awesome.

And my Top 5 Albums of 2011 list was published in the Portland Mercury! I do these lists for fun every year anyway so it’s rad to finally have it published in some substantial form.

More Spookies and more digital 7″s coming in 2012! It’s going to be a rad year, despite (or in spite of?) the Mayan calendar.

GUISE!! I have a new digital 7″ single out! It’s called “Pass It Off,” with a b-side (remember those?) of “Truth Serum.” It’s available for FREE on Bandcamp right now! The songs are fuzzy and warm, like a Cure burrito drizzed in New Order sauce. Go get it!!

Alright, so it’s been almost five months since I updated. Ooooops. In the meantime, I played lead guitar in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar (with fellow Drum Pug Ky Fifer starring as Judas), me and my Pugs played a couple shows and I’ve been writing and recording all sorts of terrible terrible music (only if you are Big Foot or The Yeti that is). Also, I have made Real Nights into a real boy so actual physical CDs will be available soon.

I have a few other projects in the works that I probably shouldn’t mention until they actually become worth mentioning. But yeah things, they happen.

Real Nights by me and my Pugs (Mayhaw Hoons and Ky Fifer) is now 100% done, and we are working on all the various little release details and artwork and whatnot. I’m hoping to have the online-only release ready in May, with the physical CD release in June or July. Yesss. While all that happens, here is another SNEEK PREEVIEW! With the album 99% done at this point, it is time for another SNEEK PREEVIEW of Real Nights featuring my Pugs, Mayhaw Hoons and Ky Fifer. This song features not only Ky’s usual drumming and backing voxing, but also saxing! His horn is all over this track. It’s called “Draw Me Out“:

Lemons, Limes and Quarks

I finished a new album! It’s different, though; it’s the long-time-coming instrumental ambient album and it’s called Quarks! It’s totally minimalist and definitely NOT pop music, so consider yourself warned. I am super proud of it though, as I’ve wanted to make an album like this for years. But it was only about a year ago that I decided to start on the path toward it in earnest by making lots of demos, figuring out the right synth sounds, arrangements, etc.

It feels pretty rad to put out an album totally different from what I normally do, and yet it is not some “side project,” it IS an “Alex Arrowsmith album.” I had always meant to be more genre-wandering, but I always just ended up making pop music. So now the spell is broken and you have an album that most people will think is boring and unnecessary! So freteth not, the REAL pop album (Real Nights) is coming out very soon!
