I signed this petition and I hope that if congressman Murtha makes you as sick to your stomach as he makes me, you’ll sign it too. You do not have to be in the military to sign the petition, as long as you are an American you can sign it. Over 37,000 people already have as of this writing.

In one of his last moves before leaving office March 13, then-Navy Secretary Donald Winter quietly awarded 19-term Democratic congressman John Murtha (Pa.) with the service’s highest civilian honor.

Citing Murtha’s “courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy,” Winter presented the influential chairman of the House Appropriations Committee’s defense panel with the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award, an honor bestowed in “those extraordinary cases where individuals have demonstrated exceptionally outstanding service of substantial and long term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps, or the Department of the Navy as a whole,” a Murtha release stated.

Murtha has refused to recant his accusations or apologize to the Marines he accused of war crimes. When asked by Military.com in late 2007 whether he regretted his initial statements and owed the exonerated Marines and Sailor an apology, Murtha refused to comment, saying the cases were still being adjudicated.

The primary reason for their ire stems from the congressman’s statements in May, 2006, that a squad of Marines who responded to an IED ambush and short firefight in Haditha, Iraq, rampaged through the village, murdering civilians “in cold blood.”

The Navy did not respond to a request for comment on the award or the backlash from veterans groups by post time.

The only honor congressman Murtha deserves is the honor of being voted out of office and never returning to public service again.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry Turns Down $555 Million In Porkulus Money

Texas Governor Rick Perry announced in Houston yesterday that he is refusing to accept $555 million in federal aid from the “Porkulus Bill” for the unemployed.

Perry said the money would come with too many strings attached. Taking the half billion would require the state to assist qualified out-of-work residents seeking part-time jobs, an idea that Perry said the state has rejected before, partly because it could discourage them from seeking full-time employment.

The federal money injection would also make Texas extend benefits to more low-paid workers, and Perry said the overall expansion would force business to make higher unemployment insurance payments.

“Employers who have to pay more taxes have less money to make their payroll” and would have to raise prices on their products, the governor said. “The calls to take the (stimulus) money and sort out the consequences later are quite troubling to me.”

I applaud Gov. Perry for showing some Conservative principles – even though it is campaign season – and turning this down.

If the Texas legislature, however, votes to overturn this, there is a small possibility that Texas can still take the funds. It will take Republicans and Democrats to work together to make that happen, which I believe is unlikely.

Sen. Hutchison, who will be running against Gov. Perry for Governor released the following the statement:

“With the state unemployment fund dangerously close to falling below the legal threshold, it is imperative (he) does nothing that potentially burdens small businesses with higher taxes in tough economic times or pushes those who have recently become unemployed and their families into further economic peril.”

I’m not quite sure what to make of this. I am still somewhat undecided on who I will be supporting for Governor, and this does not help. Sen. Hutchison voted against the “Porkulus Bill”, but it almost sounds like she is criticizing Perry for refusing this money. Hopefully Sen. Hutchison will clarify this and prove me wrong. Again, it is campaign season, so that does explain a lot.

Now Gov. Perry needs to do something about the border. That along with his refusal of the money will go a long way with Texas Conservatives who feel they have been ignored by Perry.

RNC Chairman Michael Steele did an interview with Lisa Depaulo from GQ magazine. They discussed a wide range of subjects, but the one that got to me the most was the discussion of abortion. Here is a transcript of that part of the interview:

How much of your pro-life stance, for you, is informed not just by your Catholic faith but by the fact that you were adopted?
Oh, a lot. Absolutely. I see the power of life in that—I mean, and the power of choice! The thing to keep in mind about it… Uh, you know, I think as a country we get off on these misguided conversations that throw around terms that really misrepresent truth.

Explain that.
The choice issue cuts two ways. You can choose life, or you can choose abortion. You know, my mother chose life. So, you know, I think the power of the argument of choice boils down to stating a case for one or the other.

Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion?
Yeah. I mean, again, I think that’s an individual choice.

You do?
Yeah. Absolutely.

Are you saying you don’t want to overturn Roe v. Wade?
I think Roe v. Wade—as a legal matter, Roe v. Wade was a wrongly decided matter.

Okay, but if you overturn Roe v. Wade, how do women have the choice you just said they should have?
The states should make that choice. That’s what the choice is. The individual choice rests in the states. Let them decide.

Do you want to say that Michael Steele did say quite a few good things in that same interview, but as a Republican and a self claimed Conservative, being Pro-Choice goes against the party platform and the principles of the party.

Michael Steele has also come out since “clarifying” this statement by saying he is pro-life. Mr. Steele’s misspeaking is starting to become a liability in my opinion, he is also showing his more moderate side which is a main reason I did not support him in the beginning.

I can only pray that he proves me wrong in my belief that he is the wrong man to lead the Republican party.
