Four paintings featured in Easter exhibit

The Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City opened an Easter exhibit this month featuring four paintings from Al Young Studios. The exhibit, located in one of the galleries on the main floor, runs until May of this year.

The museum is located at 45 North West Temple Street. Parking and other information are available on the Museum pages at the Church's web site.

Both of Elspeth's paintings featured in the exhibit come from the Women of the Bible Series: As It Began to Dawn, her painting of Mary Magdalene preparing to visit the tomb, and Blessed Is She That Believed, her painting of Mary at Pentecost.

Two of Al's paintings are also featured in the exhibit: And I Will Not Deny The Christ - Moroni, is a painting from the Heroes of the Book of Mormon Series, and I Shall Be Whole, is Al's most recent addition to the Women of the Bible Series.

Online art gallery revised

The art gallery area of the Al Young Studios web site now takes visitors directly to images available in the collection.

For many years, artworks have been presented by artist, by subject category, or by media. These categories can still be used to sort the collection, but site visitors now go first to the images and then to the forms in which an image is available. A detail page for each image presents the original and the prints in which each image can be purchased.

The online Product Catalog remains unchanged.

The collection currently consists of 152 images created originally as 65 oil paintings, 75 lithographs, 10 computer-generated illustrations (CGIs), and 2 block prints. In addition to the media in which the images were created (which might loosely be termed the "originals"), the Al Young Studios currently offers 101 open-edition print versions of selected images.

New Painting: One By One - The Messiah completed by Al R. Young

One By One - The Messiah by Al R. Young features the blessing of the children during the ancient American ministry of the resurrected Messiah. It is the eighth painting completed in the Heroes of the Book of Mormon series, and sells for $10,000 (unframed).

The oil on panel was completed in February and measures 18 3/8 in. x 37 3/8 in.

The Studios blog provides behind-the-scenes coverage of studio projects, as well as posts presented in the spirit of sharing ideas that might be helpful in setting up and maintaining an art studio.

The Storybook Home blog is for the community of interest in The Storybook Home Journal™: "There's so much that goes into a storybook life, and so many photos, recipes, ideas, and tips that never make it into the pages of The Storybook Home Journal™, that we decided a blog would be the perfect medium to fill in the blanks for our subscribers, and anyone else interested in 'stepping into the story.'"

Al Young receives viewer's choice award

The Mother of All Living, by Al Young, is one of three artworks to receive a viewer's choice award at the Eighth International Art Competition. The award comes after five months in which exhibit patrons cast 13,000 votes for their favorite artworks from among the 197 on display at the LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City. (See "Visitors choose favorite art at the Church History Museum").

Works included in this year's juried exhibition were selected from among 1,149 entries from Latter-day Saint artists around the world. The exhibit closes Oct. 11th, but remains accessible on the Museum's web page.

The competition is 22 years old, and in 1987 Al was among artists featured in the first exhibition. His finely crafted pencil drawing, The St. George Temple, was selected that year from among 1,031 entries.

Artworks: Al Young completes painting of the Daughter of Jairus

"I Say Unto Thee, Arise", by Al Young, is the most recent painting to be completed in the Women in the Scriptures series. It sells for $5,825.

It depicts the Daughter of Jairus in Mark 5:41-42. The piece is an oil on panel (15 in. x 21 in.).

Roster of the Shinyo Maru attack published

This week, Al Young Studios published a digitized copy of the Shinyo Maruo Roster from the National Archives. This publication of the roster integrates into the site's Master Name List the names of the 668 who perished in the attack on the ship, as well as the 82 prisoners who survived. The Master Name List now totals 2,478 people. Prisoners being transported on the Shinyo Maru included members of the 5th Air Base Group and 19th Bomb Group. This brings the total number of artifacts in the site's online archives to 581, the total number of people 2,478, and the number of search-categories for artifacts in the digital archives to 3,275.
