F.T.G (an acronym for FREEDOM THAT'S GONE) has been in existence since 1989 and together with CROMOK was one of the very first Malaysian underground metal bands to come into prominence. The original line-up consists of Bart on vocals, Mie on bass, Jac on guitars and Zam on drums. The band issued their first self-titled mini-album on independent label, FGM Productions in mid '91 and it was considered very well received for an English album at that time. The following year, they issued their first full length album entitled "After The Promise" on VSP Records and the album went on to sell more than 20,000 copies, an astonishing fest in an era where commercial Malay ballads ruled.

During this period, the band toured extensively all across the country and built a strong fanbase that will last to this day. By 1994, the band have switched label, signing with PonyCanyon and releasing their third album "Spirit To Rebel". The hard work put into touring paid off , the album went on to sell more than 30,000 copies without any radio airplay whatsoever and minimum media exposure. Other bands may claim that they're 'metal' but none have walked the walk and talked the talk like F.T.G. : they never once compromise their music, even when other so-called 'metal' bands recorded soft rock ballads to get onto radio.

The band took a year off from studio work but they still played an average of two to three concerts per week. In July 1996, they return with their fourth album, "To The Front". Within three months, the album was certified platinum (25,000 copies and above) and by year end, the album have shifted more than 40,000 copies. It was also frontman Bart's last album with the band as he left shortly after the release of "To The Front" due to personal commitments.

However, the band got back on its feet quickly when they recruited one of their old friends, Tajul as the new vocalist. 1997 was spent writing and rehearsing new as well as old material in preparation for their next album. 1998 saw the release of "Stronger Than Steel: The Best Of F.T.G", a compilation collecting material from their very first mini-album to their most recent album, "To The Front". This compilation also marks the beginning of a new chapter in the long-running history of the band which have maintained the same line-up for almost 8 years until the departure of original vocalist Bart. Ladies and gentleman, F.T.G Mark II has arrived.

The year 1998 marked another first in the band's history: a Malay album. Contrary to fears that the band have gone soft and sold out to the corporate machine, the album entitled "Aku Tak Peduli" contains NO ballads. New vocalist Tajul added a much needed neew dimension into the band but it was essentially a F.T.G album: hard, fast and still as heavy as a two ton sledgehammer.

"Aku Tak Peduli" then dumbfounded the critics and even the band themselves by going platinum within a month of release and reached number 2 on the RIM Malay Album Chart. To date, "Aku Tak Peduli" have sold more than 40,000 copies. In between their tours, the band went straight back into the studio to record a follow-up English album.

But the project got sidetracked when bassist Mie decided it would be fun to play some cover versions of their favorite songs for their shows. In the end, they had rehearsed enough cover songs to record another album, "Made In Malaysia". Conceived as a tribute album of sorts to their favorite bands and songs as well as to get away from the monotony and pressure of a full album, F.T.G. covered classic tracks ("Paranoid", "Black Night", "Wish You Were Here") from seminal groups such as Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. "Made In Malaysia" was a smashing success, with sales reaching more than 10,000 within the first week of release and the album have sold more than 30,000 copies to date.

By now, the mainstream media had woken up to the fact that metal music is a force to be reckoned with and acknowledged F.T.G. as one of the if not THE premier metal group in Malaysia. There's no stopping F.T.G. as they triumphed at every concert they played.

This culminated with the Metal Wars concert held at Sunway Amphitheatre on the 31st of July of 1999, which was attended by more than 5,000 fans. This concert was also recorded and was released shortly after as the "Live At Metal Wars" album. Listening to the live album, even the casual listener will be struck by the intensity and energy of the band as a unit. It was also to be the first No. 1 album for the band as "Live At Metal Wars" hit the top of the RIM Chart on the first week of its release.

The band took three month break before reconvening in late'99 to write and record their second Malay album. Recording of the self-titled album took almost four months, the longest the band ever did. The new album signified a new chapter in the band's musical direction with F.T.G.'s trademark no-holds barred thrash metal taking a more melodic approach and incorporating other genres such as hardcore and funk into their songs. Released in April 2000, "F.T.G." was yet another resounding success, selling more than 20,000 copies within a month despite initial skepticism from critics on whether fans will be able to accept the slightly different musical path that the band is taking this time around.

Upon the release of the new album, the band embarked on another tour of Malaysia culminating with the band headlining the "Battle Of Brutal" concert alongside XPDC. The band played a transcendent set and stole the thunder from the headliners and further cemented their reputation as one of the best live bands in the country.

Due to overwhelming demand from the fans, the band decided to record a second volume of cover songs, this time covering a diverse range of rock artistes from Judas Priest to Gary Moore. "Made In Malaysia Vol.2" was completed in January '01 and was just as equally well-received as the first volume. More touring followed and the band reconvened in mid-2002 after taking a well-deserved 3 month break.

The recording for "Reborn" was long tedious, due the various commitments of the band (Jac became a father and vocalist Tajul got married) but the album was finally completed at the end of 2002. "Reborn" marked another new phase in the band's musical trajectory with experimental new rhythms and sound palates (atmospheric keyboard flourishes, almost techno-like loops) added to their already fearsome musical arsenal, proving that F.T.G. can evolve and compete with the best of today's younger bands. It was as usual, another triumph musically and commercially for the band.

Which brings us to the current F.T.G. release, "Stop This Madness". Just the title alone hints at the band's personal distaste at global politics post-9/11. With incendiary tracks like "Never", "Saint or Tyrant" and "Mysery (Why Should I Die)", the F.T.G. one-two musical sucker punch of socially/politically aware lyrics set to uncompromising metal is well and intact. But of the first time ever, the music goes down a few notches on "Running With The Wind", arguably the most mellow F.T.G. song ever.

Tengku Djan from Team Bridgestone Malaysia manoeuvred his Nissan 180SX to top position, reigning supreme over an accomplished field of 53 hot-shot professional drift drivers at the final day of the inaugural Goodyear Formula DRIFT Malaysia held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) on Sunday.

Djan (above left) just edged out his worthy opponent Sak Nana Kiki from Team PTT Thailand in the final tandem battle, while Team Goodyear Malaysia’s ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddet (above right), who wowed the crowd in his Mazda RX-7, came in third.

Thousands of spectators poured into MAEPS from as early as 8:30 am, and were thrilled at the hot tyre-burning action as top drivers from eight countries including Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan put on a fast and furious show that rivaled the very best in the world.

The two-day event saw keen competition amongst 53 drivers from across the Asia-Pacific region. All 53 drivers pushed their rear-wheel-drive cars to the limits by demonstrating impeccable precision and vehicle control to enter the ranks of the Top 32. They then faced off in one-on-one tandem battles to whittle down the driver pool to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4 and finally, the Big 2.

Djan took on Sak Nana Kiki in a spectacular final tandem battle royale and with wheels screeching and tyres burning, crowd favourite The 'Prince of Drift' gained a dominant lead in what was truly a scintillating finale to two great days of high-octane action and furious competition.

Title sponsor Goodyear Malaysia showcased a stellar line-up of 17 drivers, including top female drifter, Azrina Jane Abdullah, fellow team mates Ariff Johanis (above), Michael Gan and Johan Norman, as well as some of the top regional drifters, Japan’s Ryuji Miki and New Zealander “Mad” Mike Whiddet, both from Team Goodyear Malaysia.

“Goodyear’s very first Formula DRIFT Malaysia was sizzling with red-hot action. It is certainly an honor to be part of this exhilarating event. Having such a number of international and local drivers competing only underscores our commitment to raise drifting standards to an international level,” said Richard Fleming, Managing Director, Goodyear ASEAN.

“There is also a high degree of synergy between drifting, a motorsport that places strong emphasis on advanced technology and precision driving and performance tires. Our ultra high performance tires put up a fantastic showing the last two days,” he added.

The Goodyear Formula DRIFT Malaysia was the climax of the three-part Formula DRIFT Series, which blasted off with the Formula DRIFT Singapore ProAm Series 2009 in July and Formula DRIFT Thailand in November.

Perodua MD: New Alza will be top-selling MPV

KUALA LUMPUR: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is confident its newly launched Perodua Alza will be the top-selling multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in 2010.

Managing director Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said Perodua was targeting to sell between 3,500 and 4,000 units of the model per month, adding that it had already received 3,500 bookings for the Alza since Nov 13.

“Based on our target of 4,000 units a month, it should be the highest (selling MPV),” he told a press conference before the launch of Alza yesterday.

Hafiz said he expected the local MPV segment to grow to 30% of total industry volume in 2010 compared with 10%–11% currently.

He said the Alza was targeted at young families and urban singles, adding that the bulk of the pre-launch orders were for the automatic variants.

The Alza is available in standard, premium and advanced variants. All variants are available in both manual and automatic transmissions.

With a starting price of RM56,000, the Alza (which means “to rise” in Spanish) is the cheapest MPV in the market. The vehicle maker will in March launch the advanced variants, priced at between RM67,000 and RM70,000.

Asked about the potential impact of Proton Holdings Bhd’s newly launched Exora Basic variant, which has a starting price of RM57,548, Hafiz said: “I don’t think it would affect us significantly.”

“We did a survey and found that 30% of the respondents would purchase an MPV if it was affordable,” Hafiz said.

As of October 2009, Perodua had sold 138,000 vehicles compared with 142,000 units a year earlier. It currently commands a 31.1% market share of TIV.

Hafiz said the Alza would boost its market share to 31.5% of an estimated TIV of 520,000 units by the year-end. Perodua expected its market share to reach 33.3% next year when the TIV was projected to hit 530,000, he added.

Currently, Myvi and Viva account for 55% and 41% respectively of Perodua’s sales. Hafiz said the vehicle maker was on track to achieving RM7bil sales this year.

For 2010, Hafiz said the Alza would contribute 28% to total sales, with Myvi and Viva contributing 40% and 32% respectively.

Summary

Mad Mike wins Formula Drift Thailand!

Over the weekend, Mad Mike Whiddett was up in Thailand competing in his quad-rotor Mazda RX-7 at the Formula D Asia Pacific Drift Championship in Thailand. Just sorting the HKS sequential gearbox (which was stuck in customs all week after being transported from NZ to Thailand) in time for the first practice, Mike went out and was told by the judges he was the most impressive on the track with the fastest speed, best line and best angle.
After spinning on his first qualifying pass and nudging the wall, Mike qualified in third position (out of 57 entrants) on his second of two qualifying passes, behind Malaysia’s Tengku Djan and ex-D1GP champion, Ryuji Miki.

In rain-affected battle conditions, Mike slid all the way to the top of the podium, eventually beating Miki in the finals for the top spot! Congratulations, Mike! More details to follow once Mike gets back from riding elephants. Apparently.

BMW M1 Hommage revealed

It has been an interesting weekend. In honor of the M1’s 30th birthday, BMW decided to reveal the M1 Hommage, a concept that pays tribute to the original M1. The new design was shown at a private party over the weekend at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este.

The M1 Hommage was placed next to an original M1 and the 1972 Turbo Concept. Nearly thirty years ago, BMW has entered the supercar market with the M1, which shortly became an icon in terms of performance. BMW are no strangers to retro design, the Mini global success is the perfect example. The M1 Hommage combines the retro style with modern elements, and it stands out by its aggressive and wide body style.

Looked from a side, the M1 clearly mimics the older design, which is easily recognized by the louvered rear window, the BMW badge placement and the metallic bronze paint, just like the first M1 prototype in 1972.

The purpose of the new M1 project is uncertain and the M1 Hommage is strictly a design exercise meant to celebrate the past of its supercar. The car displayed at the Villa d’Este Concours was a non-functional prototype, with no engine and interior, but with working lights and steering. Of course, the speculations will start flowing now and many people will probably look forward to a future design similar to the M1 Hommage, but there are no clues on whether BMW will ever manufacture an M1.

We have heard many rumors in the past that a 1 series M version might be built in the future, but each time we have spoken with BMW executives, the rumor has not been confirmed. In my opinion, I would rather see the retro style M1 being brought back rather than an M1 based on the 135i.

Nokia Booklet 3G hands-on (with video!)

That $599 non-subsidized price still sounds silly -- and $299 with a 2-year $60 monthly contract seems almost more extreme -- but there's no denying that the Booklet 3G is a truly premium netbook. It's light, strong and very elegant, with an aluminum chassis, wonderful keyboard and spacious two-finger-scroll touchpad Unfortunately, those netbook innards deliver about what you'd expect in the performance arena (almost too slow for web browsing), and NY's AT&T 3G coverage certainly doesn't serve the laptop well (as demonstrated on video after the break). There's also the small matter of the screen: it has a pretty weak viewing angle, particularly from above, and overall just seems a little dim. Nokia's software approach isn't too revolutionary, since the Social Hub -- which offers threaded text messaging over 3G -- is the only exclusive app on the computer, and the Ovi Maps-branded GPS software is still in the works. Overall, the appeal is probably going to be strongest with dyed-in-the-wool Nokia fans and people with a bit of extra cash to burn, but this is an obviously elegant product that doesn't do any sort of disservice to its phone heritage.

Update: Nokia just clarified to us that the demo units at this event were actually from the UK, and therefore don't have US 3G -- which would certainly explain some of the speed issues.
