You can read all about the latest troubling financial allegations involving SDM via current news sources, so I won't elaborate on them here.

The Web site, UFO Watchdog (see link) posted Morton prominently in its "Hall of Shame" section (must see) years ago, but words of caution never diverted Coast from incorporating this gentleman into the show on numerous occasions. After all, the listeners love him, the hosts apparently love him, and the producers -- well, I suspect the producers may have become lax over the years, finding it necessary to frequently invite as guests almost anything that snorts, squeaks, grunts or spits, so long as doing so keeps the audience listening and purchasing sponsors' products. But mixing the spice and the sensational with an increasingly anemic format may not bode well for the future, despite the truly useful or entertaining interviews conducted on the show occasionally.

The barrel bottom's contents ultimately grow lean and sparks of longevity fizzle, however, particularly when it's common knowledge that a fair number of (UFO) researchers with legitimate things to say simply won't go near the microphone on radio's overnight yawn show.

Sorry folks, but except for its global broadcast abilities, Coast wasn't the first to do this brand of program, and numerous others dating back to the fifties did it as well or better, and more intimately. Refreshingly, alleged scam artists and others of questionable repute were generally treated, not as members of the family, but as curiosities. All I know is, next time a comet shows up, I'll be tuning in to Coast-to-Coast AM to find out how many UFOs accompany it, so I can relay this valuable information to my local cult leaders. They need it to prepare for the bitter end, you know -- like last time.

Note: This is the series that I began before the recent death of Charles Moore. I rejoin the series here.

The reporters now drag Samford back to the current sightings. One of them asked, "General, does that -- the kind of involved explanation you just gave us -- does that apply to the recent Washington sightings or upon your observations over the past years since 1946 based on all your experience with it?"

Samford: Well, our reaction to the recent Washington sightings is related to the past experience in terms of -- we have dealt with radar blips before.

Reporter: General, if these were vehicles or materials of our own making, they wouldn’t be a menace to the United States. Do you exclude that?

Samford: I’d exclude that, definitely.

Reporter: General, let’s make it clear now you are excluding -- if you’ll affirm that -- you are excluding vehicles, missiles, and other tangible objects flying through space, including the subhuman bodies from other planets.

Samford: In my mind, yes.

Reporter: Anything material -- would that be a clear statement.

Samford: When you deal with a scientific man, maybe he might quarrel with you by what is the real meaning of "material." With my limited knowledge of material I would say yes. In my own view the thing is excluded as being a material evidence.

Reporter: In other words, General, if you remove the EEI [Essential Element of Intelligence] from that statement, it could apply to any missile, material, or object that is in the air, regardless of whether it’s a menace to the United States or not?

Samford: Well, yes.

Reporter: In other words, it just isn’t there.

Samford: I believe that, that there is no -- well, now, that is a little bit in error because a minute ago I said birds do these things. Now, a bird has substance, you see. I don’t want to go out and say that these things are reflections of nothing. If they’re reflections of something. That’s why the thought of saying that this thing satisfies us in having no real pattern other than that of phenomena.

Reporter: General, you said there’d never been a simultaneous radar fix on one of these things.

Samford: I don’t think I wanted to say that. Reporter: You didn’t mean to say that?

Samford: I meant to say that, when you talk about simultaneously, somebody will say, "was it on 1203 hours, 24 and a half seconds?" and I don’t know.

Reporter: Well, I’d like to point out this fact that the officer in charge of the radar station at Andrews Field told me that on the morning of July 20th, which was a week from last Saturday, he picked up an object three miles north of Riverdale and he was in intercom communication with CAA and they exchanged information and the CAA also had a blip three miles north of Riverdale and on both radars the same blip remained for about thirty seconds and simultaneously disappeared from both sets. Now --

Samford: Well, their definition of simultaneous, yes. But some people won’t be satisfied that that is simultaneously.

Reporter: Well, it is pretty damned simultaneous (laughter) for all purposes, it is satisfied by the inversion theory, Captain.

Samford: Well, I’m talking about the split-second people who want to say you’ve got to prove now that this happened at such-and-such a time and they’ll say your observations are delayed by half a second; therefore, you can’t say it was simultaneous.

Reporter: And does your inversion theory explain away that situation?

James: It possibly could, yes. Reporter: It possibly could, but could it?

James: We don’t have the details. Reporter: Is there any reason why it couldn’t.

Reporter: General, can we get this clarified?

Samford: I believe -- I’m trying to let this gentleman ask a question. Excuse me.

Reporter: Isn’t it true, sir, that these show a definite grouping, the sightings around atomic bomb plants or areas? Doesn’t your map at Wright Field show that?

Samford: I find no pattern in this dispersal of sightings than I do in a radar screen. You can perhaps take distribution of sightings and say that you arrange it this way and you take this group during this period and that gives you a dispersal that may have some significance in it. But I’d like to have Captain Ruppelt develop that because he probably knows more about what has been done to try to plot these things and say, "Does that have any meaning?" I am not satisfied that any effort we’ve made toward a dispersal pattern has developed one shred of evidence or meaning. Would you correct me or speak to that point?

Ruppelt: We’ve plotted these things out on a map and they do come out grouped around some of the atomic installations in the country. However, there’s one point, you don’t know, maybe people in that area are a little more jumpy and, if they see a meteor, they’ll report it in to the guards. If some farmer out in the middle of Iowa saw a meteor, he’d just forget about it. Now, that is one possibility that we can’t eliminate. A lot of sightings that occurred around these atomic installations have turned out to be balloons, etc., but it may be that the story has gone out that those are vital areas and more people are reporting. We don’t know.

Ruppelt’s concluding remark, that "We don’t know," is about the only thing said here that is true. Everything else is speculation. The data are incomplete. The Air Force simply didn’t know what percentage of sightings was legitimate, how many sightings had not been reported, or if the explanations offered were real. They were there to answer questions and convince the reporters that they had the situation in hand. To suggest otherwise would have been to nullify the purpose of the press conference.

Yukon, Alaska
Shape: Cigar
Summary: Radar acquisition of object

Report:
My name is James Beaman. From Jan 1974 thru December 1975, I was stationed at Ft. Yukon Acws site in FT Yukon Alaska, which is part of the early warning system. The site was manned by USAF personnel. Many times during the evening shifts we would get radar images of unidentified aircraft molesting civilian aircraft bound to different destinations through out the world. These aircraft were incredibly fast and could turn on a dime. We had several times that the aircraft in question would molest an SR 71 heading through Alaskan airspace. You know haw fast the SR71 is. The manual ground speed, as determined by the operators was over 2600 hundred miles per hour. These craft would com in from different headings and molest the aircraft for a few minutes and then sped away in some different direction. Some of these turns were impossible for the Military and the civilian aircraft.

When these air space incursions happened to military and civilian aircraft alike Anchorage Center would yell on the hot box if we had any military aircraft molesting the civilian aircraft. Our procedure at the time was to turn on the scope camera to record the incidents. I am sure there are records of these interdictions in the USAF files, if you know what to look for.

The reason I am writing this letter today Is that I am watching the story of the JAL pilot that saw a UFO over Alaska in the 1980's. I want to tell you that I am sure this Pilot saw what he saw. If you look deeper into the incidents over Alaskan Air Space you will definitely find the proof you need. I am not sure what the USAF did with the record of these incursions. But I know they happened and there is a lot of guys stationed in Fort Yukon, Alaska that could tell you more about these incidents.

*         *        *

The Fantastic Flight of JAL1628

November 17, 1986
Over northeastern Alaska

ufoevidence.org- It was just a routine flight. Well, not exactly routine.... It was a special Japan Air Lines 747 cargo flight to carry a load of French wine from Paris to Tokyo. The flight plan would carry flight 1628 from Paris to Reykjavik, Iceland, across the North Atlantic and Greenland, then across Canada to Anchorage, Alaska, and finally across the Pacific to Tokyo. The crew consisted of veteran Captain Kenju Terauchi, co-pilot Takanori Tamefuji, and flight engineer Yoshio Tsukuba.

On November 16, 1986, laden with wine, JAL1628 took off from Paris and flew the first leg of the trip, to Reykjavik. The next day, they continued, flying over Greenland and then across northern Canada without event.

Just after they crossed into Alaska, at 5:09 PM local time, Anchorage Air Traffic Control contacted them on the radio to report initial radar contact. The Anchorage flight controller asked them to turn 15 degrees to the left and head for a point known as Talkeetna on a heading of 215 degrees. They were at 35,000 feet and traveling at a ground speed of about 600 mph.

At about 5:11 PM local time, Captain Terauchi noticed the lights of some sort of aircraft about 2000 feet below and 30 degrees to the left front of them. He decided that the aircraft was probably an American jet fighter from nearby Eielson or Elmendorf Air Force Bases patrolling Alaskan airspace, so he ignored them at first. However, after a few minutes, he noticed that the lights were keeping pace with his own aircraft, which would be an unusual thing for patrolling jets to do.

It was about seven or so minutes since we began paying attention to the lights (when), most unexpectedly, two spaceships stopped in front of our face, shooting off lights. The inside cockpit shined brightly and I felt warm in the face.

Terauchi said that it was his impression that the two objects he had seen below them minutes before had suddenly jumped in from of him. The craft, one above the other, kept pace with the 747 for several minutes, moving in unison with an odd rocking motion. After about seven minutes, they changed to a side-by-side arrangement. Terauchi said that the "amber and whitish" lights were like flames coming out of multiple rocket exhaust ports arranged in two rectangular rows on the craft. He felt that they fired in a particular sequence to stabilize the craft, much like the small maneuvering thrusters on the Space Shuttle. He also reported seeing sparks like a fire when using gasoline or carbon fuel.

Co-pilot Tamefuji described the lights as "Christmas assorted" lights with a "salmon" color. He said: I remember red or orange, and white landing light, just like a landing light. And weak green, ah, blinking. He also described the lights as pulsating slowly. They became stronger, became weaker., became stronger, became weaker, different from strobe lights. The lights were "swinging" in unison as if there were "very good formation flight...close" of two aircraft side by side. He described the appearance of the lights as similar to seeing "night flight head-on traffic", where it is only possible to see the lights on an approaching aircraft and "we can not see the total shape." He said, I'm sure I saw something. It was clear enough to make me believe that there was an oncoming aircraft.

Flight engineer Tsukuba, who sat behind the copilot, did not have as good a view of the lights. He first saw them "through the L1 window at the 11 o'clock position" and he saw "clusters of lights undulating". These clusters were "made of two parts...shaped like windows of an airplane". He emphasized that "the lights in front of us were different from town lights." He described the colors as white or amber.

Tamefuji decided to call Anchorage Air Traffic Control, and for the next thirty minutes the 747 and AARTCC were in constant contact regarding the UFO.

During this time, Captain Terauchi asked Tskububa to hand him a camera so that he could attempt to take a photograph of the lights. However, Terauchi was unfamiliar with the camera and could not get it to operate. Tsukuba also could not get his camera to operate due to problems with the auto-focus and finally gave up trying to take a photo.

At this point they began experiencing some radio interference and were asked by Anchorage to change frequencies. Terauchi later said that Anchorage kept asking him about clouds in the immediate area: They asked us several times if there were clouds near our altitude. We saw thin and spotty clouds near the mountain below us, no clouds in mid-to-upper air, and the air current was steady.

Soon after the exchanges about clouds, the objects flew off to the left. Terauchi said later: There was a pale white flat light in the direction where the ships flew away, moving in a line along with us, in the same direction and same speed and at the same altitude as we were.

Terauchi decided to see whether they could see anything on the 747's own radar:

I thought it would be impossible to find anything on an aircraft radar if a large ground radar did not show anything, but I judged the distance of the object visually and it was not very far. I set the digital weather radar distance to 20 (nautical) miles, radar angle to horizon (i.e., no depression angle). There it was on the screen. A large green and round object had appeared at 7 or 8 miles (13 km to 15 km) away, where the direction of the object was. We reported to Anchorage center that our radar caught the object within 7 or 8 miles in the 10 o'clock position. We asked them if they could catch it on ground radar but it did not seem they could catch it at all

At 5:25:45, after spending two minutes looking, the military radar at Elmendorf Regional Operational Control Center also picked up something. The ROCC radar controller reported back to the AARTCC that he was getting some "surge primary return." By this he meant an occasional radar echo unaccompanied by a transponder signal.

A Gigantic Spaceship!

As the 747 neared Fairbanks:
The lights (of the city) were extremely bright to eyes that were used to the dark. (The cockpit lights had been turned off to eliminate window reflections of internal lights.) We were just above the bright city lights and we checked the pale white light behind us. Alas! There was a silhouette of a gigantic spaceship. We must run away quickly! "Anchorage Center. The JAL1628 is requesting a change of course to right 45 degrees." It felt like a long time before we received permission

Just after the plane turned to the right, the AARTCC controller called the Fairbanks Approach Radar controller to find out whether or not the short-range radar had a target near the JAL. The approach radar reported no target other than JAL1628.

The plane came out of the turn and flew toward Talkeetna at an altitude of 31,000 ft, with the object still following.

At about 5:40 a United Airlines passenger jet took off from Anchorage and headed north to Fairbanks. The AARTCC controller decided to ask the UA pilot to try to see the object that was following the JAL flight. The UA pilot said he would look when he got closer. The controller asked the JAL flight to stay at 31,000 ft and the UA flight to stay at 29,000 ft. He then directed the UA flight to turn some more so that the planes would pass within five miles of one another.

As the United Airlines jet got closer, the UFO apparently dropped behind, allowing the JAL plane to get far ahead. The United pilot asked the AARTCC to have the JAL pilot flash the headlights on the JAL aircraft so he could locate the plane. At 5:49:45 the JAL pilot did that. At this point the planes were about 25 miles apart.

When the planes were about 12 miles apart, the UA plane reported seeing the JAL plane and nothing else. But by this time the UFO had apparently disappeared, not being seen by JAL1628, either.

At about 5:51, the AARTCC requested that a military TOTEM flight in the area also fly toward the JAL plane for a look. During the next several minutes TOTEM viewed the JAL plane but couldn't see any other traffic. JAL1628 proceeded to Anchorage and landed at 6:20 PM.

The FAA conducted an investigation of the incident, and did not issue its final report until March 5. CSICOP's (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal)Phil Klass issued a premature statement on January 22 claiming that the UFOs were the planets Jupiter and Mars - an impossible solution because the UFO was seen in a part of the sky opposite the position of these planets and because the UFOs moved from positions one above the other to side by side. CSICOP later issued a second explanation that the UFO was light reflecting off of clouds of ice crystals - also unlikely because the sky was clear at the reported altitude of the UFO. The FAA attributed the radar images received by ground radar to a "split radar return from the JAL Boeing 747."

*        *         *

Note: I seriously doubt that the USAF would turn over these records. They certainly didn't offer them up at the time of flight JAL1628

This report contains spelling and some grammar corrections. To see original report, click on case number.

Radar Depiction by SW

***************************

I blogged about Davies's views on UFOs earlier this year and the book has now been reviewed by Jon Ronson in The Guardian and by Lord Martin Rees in The Times.

Particularly worth reading are Davies's comments on UFOs and government cover-ups (discussed in Chapter 1). As a student at Royal Holloway during the 1970s Davies was a believer in UFOs as craft visiting Earth from other worlds, and was convinced by the catalogues of ground traces and radar trackings used by UFOlogists as proof that structured craft from elsewhere are regularly visiting Earth.

But his mature views after 40 years as a SETI scientist are worth contrasting with the beliefs of Stan Friedman, Tim Good and the 'disclosure movement'. As chair of the SETI Post-Detection Task Group, it would be Davies who would be the first to announce to the world that contact has been made with an extraterrestrial civilisation, as they would be first to receive it. And he would do that via the scientific community, making any notion that governments would or could successfully conceal such amazing news redundant.

In his review of the book Jon Ronson mentions that at the recent Royal Society conference to mark the 50th anniversay of SETI, a man in dark glasses stood up during the Q&A session with Davies to announce: "Why does SETI ignore what's right in front of us? The 6,000 abductions! The 10,000 cattle mutilations!" His succinct answer was: "To expect alien technology to be just a few decades ahead of ours is too incredible to be taken seriously." To Davies, unpicking the mysteries of the universe utilising fundamental physics and astrobiology leads to a far more satisfying explanation of the wonders of nature, compared to which the UFO abduction industry is merely a updated medieval demonology.

On the subject of UFOs, Davies appears to have reached the same conclusion as others such as Jenny Randles, Paul Devereux and myself namely that, despite scepticism borne of past experience in investigating UFO incidents:

"it would not surprise me if a small fraction of cases involve new or little-understood atmospheric or psychological phenomena. But whatever lies behind that stubborn residue of hard-to-explain cases, I see no reason to attribute them to the activities of alien beings visiting our planet in flying saucers. UFOs, like ghost stories, are fun to read, but cannot be taken seriously as evidence for extraterrestrial beings. They do serve a useful purpose, however, by providing a window on how the human mind imagines aliens and alien technology. What is striking about the accounts is not their weird and otherworldly character, but their distinctly mundane and human-like quality. We would surely expect of extraterrestrials something more extraordinary than humanoid beings piloting the equivalent of souped-up Stealth bombers" (pg 22 of The Eerie Silence).

This is a viewpoint which is entirely sympathetic to my own position after 20 years on the flying saucer beat. As I was quoted by The Times: on 18 February "I think either aliens are watching our TV and adapting their aircraft accordingly, or people are seeing these things in popular culture and adapting them in their own imagination."

There was a light flashing through my window blinds. I was in a paralyzed state. While in this paralysis, I was forced to watch my life replay on my blinds. This lasted until 7:00 A.M. The same experience at exactly 5:45 until 7:00 happened for 5 days straight. On each day I watched different times in my life unfold.

On the 6th day it was different. I awoke at 5:45 but this time it felt as thought someone or something was being dropped into my body. This time, information was given to me that I believe was meant to make a difference for mankind. Information was given to me regarding present day communication technology and how to use it to peacefully change our existing governmental system into a 21st Century system that allows the "people," not the politicians, to raise, debate and vote directly on the issues. I was released from this at exactly 7:00 A. M. On the 7th morning, it was a refresher course of the 6th morning.

This experience has totally changed my life. Because of the information that was given to me, I have gone on to win the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award here in our community and have hosted a radio program here called "Stand Up America."

I would appreciate the opportunity to present this experience and the message that came from it to someone on your staff for their consideration.

I believe the message that was given to me during this ordeal is exactly what our country needs to fix the broken system that we are all experiencing.

Thank you for your kind consideration..Sincerely, [cms/tg/pd]
P. S. Everything thing in this experience that I just described can be proved and verified..

*        *        *

MUFON Case # 22151
Event Date: 07/10/1993 16:15
Location: Rockford, Illinois
Summary: I was indoors in a basement room alone, and I was sitting on a bed, when I was paralyzed and manipulated.

Report:
Like I said, I was alone in a basement room, sitting on my bed, when I felt a weakness come over me and I fell prostrate was turned onto my belly by unseen forces. I had an overwhelming feeling of warmth and friendliness, as though my best friend in the whole world was with me. Its hard to explain, like the feeling was imposed on me without my knowledge or control over it.

My head was turned to the side, so that my face was directed towards a wall. I noticed something moving in my field of vision. I was unable to move, except to slightly turn my head as though it were very heavy and hard to move. So I moved my head to see what was moving in the corner of the room. Because of the influence of the drugged feeling, I had no fear at that time and felt a feeling of welcoming a good friend, again as though it was a feeling imposed on me, not seeming to originate from my own mind. Hard to explain.

Then I saw the crease of the corner between the two walls open, like the walls became soft and kind of bent to allow the corner crease between the walls to spread open and stretch open, like an orifice or opening. It was a cinder block wall. It became fluid or soft and moved apart, and beyond was blackness.

Then I seen the figure of a humanoid being, inside of the blackness, it slowly floated or was riding on some kind of support from behind, not sure. It was similar to the classic image of how alien beings are portrayed by the media, except that where the nose and mouth should be, there was perhaps a nose and mouth, but were not very recognizable and had folds and wrinkles that made it hard to make out the features plainly. It had great large slanted but not squinted solid black eyes, a large bald head and was wearing some kind of dark colored cloak or clothing.

I could not see its legs or feet, as though it was floating or riding on some sort of linkage, or support of some kind. It also had long spidery thin fingers, and on its fingers were shiny metal complicated looking devices and some of them had needles on the end. It came out of the black opening in the corner slowly and proceeded to advance towards me until it was over me and I was no longer able to see it as my head was laying down and seemed too heavy to lift.

At this point I was starting to wonder why I was so glad to see this being, and suddenly realized that I should not feel this way. Then a wave of fear came over me and I was unable to move or fight or flee or even to look and see what was going on.

The next thing I felt was a needle, which I assumed was one of the instruments the being had attached to its fingertips. I felt the prick of the needle at different points along the side of my spine. Each time it entered my back I felt what I thought was an electrical stimulation in my back along the spine, and whatever corresponding limb was near each puncture site, that limb, arm or leg would spasm and move when the electrical impulse would fire into my spine, as though the nerves going from my spine to my limbs were being stimulated electrically.

At this point I was unable to move my head at all, and did not see the being leave, but eventually, I was able to move, and I got up and went to the corner and the wall was same as ever, intact, hard, seemingly undisturbed. I had no idea what this being was, or its intention.

*        *        *

Note: Reports here, contain spelling/grammar corrections. To see original reports, please click on case numbers.

****************************

Charles B. Moore Dies

Blogger's note -- The following was picked from the New Mexico Institute of Technology web site is the following article on the passing of Dr. Charles B. Moore. Moore is seen here as he and I check atmospheric records in an attempt to learn if a Mogul balloon could have reached the Brazel (Foster) ranch in July 1947. I have interrupted the series on the Washington National UFO Sighting Press Conference for what I think of as important news.

SOCORRO, N.M., March 4, 2010 – Charles B. Moore, renowned researcher on atmospheric physics, passed away on March 2, 2010, in Socorro.

Moore was professor emeritus of physics at New Mexico Tech and former chairman of Tech’s Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research. Although he retired in 1985, he remained active in his research until the last few years, when Alzheimer’s disease affected him. He is survived by his wife, Wilma, and their three children, Charles III, Rita, and Malcolm.

Moore took a long and circuitous route to the heights of his profession, managing to bypass a Ph.D. along the way, until 2003, when he was awarded an honorary Ph.D. by New Mexico Tech. He received numerous awards from fellow scientists, including a fellowship awarded by the American Geophysical Union, the Otto C. Winzen Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Atmospheric Electricity Community.

Moore was born on October 28, 1920, in Maryville, Tenn. He started college at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1940, but like many of his generation, his education was interrupted by service in World War II. He served as a weather equipment officer for the U.S. Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India theater, and later was a weather observer in occupied China.

Moore returned to Georgia Tech, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1947. He was then recruited for Project Mogul by New York University, which conducted the project for the U. S. Army Air Corps.

He later recalled that the extended field trips were what ended his graduate schooling.

Project Mogul involved launching balloons to carry microphones up to the base of the stratosphere, where the temperature of the atmosphere is highly effective at refracting sound waves. At the time, 1947, the United States was concerned with listening for nuclear testing by other countries, especially the Soviet Union, so the microphone-bearing balloons were launched to listen for the sounds.

The experiment succeeded in detecting U.S. nuclear tests in the South Pacific, 6,000 miles away, but it also added an important footnote to American cultural history. A balloon launched by Moore in June of 1947 later proved to be the item that is enshrined at Roswell as a “UFO.” Moore didn't realize the part he had played in the drama until he happened to see a newspaper picture of the pieces of the “UFO” in the 1990s.

Moore was considered a pioneer in the development and testing of modern polyethylene balloons as atmospheric research tools. In 1947, he made the first flight in a such a balloon, and in a later test, he made a 24-hour balloon flight from Minneapolis to New Jersey. In 1957, he made a record-breaking flight to the altitude of 82,000 feet in a pressurized balloon gondola, with Commander Malcolm D. Ross. During this flight, he made the first measurements which discovered traces of water vapor in the atmosphere of Venus.

After he carried reconnaissance cameras to high altitude for the U.S. Air Force, a program to fly balloons carrying these cameras over the Soviet Union was established by General Mills, for whom Moore worked until 1953. He was then offered an opportunity to work for Arthur D. Little, a research company in Cambridge, Mass., again on a project involving research by balloon. While there, he designed and built the first alkaline-metal vaporizers used in rocket-borne ionospheric probes. Also at Little, Moore met and began his long collaboration with Dr. Bernard Vonnegut.

Vonnegut was well-known as the scientist who had discovered that silver iodide could be used for cloud seeding. In 1956, Moore and Vonnegut were invited to New Mexico by E. J. Workman, then president of New Mexico Tech, to conduct thunderstorm research at Mt. Withington, some 70 miles west of Tech. For three successive summers, Moore and Vonnegut hauled truckloads of equipment to and from Boston each year, until the fateful day in 1958 when Moore suggested that what they needed was a mountaintop lab where the equipment could be kept year round.

Workman and his colleague Marx Brook liked the idea, but instead of Mt. Withington, as Moore proposed, they decided to put their lab in the Magdalena Mountains, closer to Socorro and within line-of-sight of the campus. By 1964, their lab – Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research – was built and ready to put into operation. In 1965, Dr. Stirling Colgate, the new president of New Mexico Tech, offered jobs to both Moore and Vonnegut. The latter chose to stay at Arthur D. Little – and later moved to SUNY Albany – but Moore was delighted at the opportunity and came to Tech as an associate professor of physics and research physicist.

In 1969, he became the chairman of Langmuir Laboratory. During his time at the helm, Moore greatly expanded the lab's facilities. He obtained funding for and organized the construction of a large addition to the Main Building, a balloon hangar, an airplane hangar, and underground shielded rooms (Faraday cages) on South Baldy Peak for studying nearby lightning. He was also responsible for the construction of a vertically-scanning radar and for solving the political problems to allow the launching of instrumented rockets into thunderstorms over Langmuir Laboratory. In addition, he organized the modification and instrumentation of an airplane that has flown into thunderstorms for many years.

Moore also taught techniques of launching balloons in severe weather to a number of Tech faculty members and students, many of whom continued their work in the field. Thus, he was the mentor of many of today's scientists who study electrical properties of severe storms.

Moore nominally retired from New Mexico Tech in 1985, but continued to be active in research. He developed the first real improvement to the lightning rod since Benjamin Franklin invented it in the 18th Century, by proving that blunt-tipped rods were more effective than pointed-tipped ones. As a result of his work, most of the lightning rods manufactured in the United States today are blunt-tipped.

Moore was a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and received New Mexico Tech's Distinguished Research Award in 1984 and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1997. He was a fellow in three scientific societies: The Royal Meteorological Society, American Meteorological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Upon presenting Moore with an honorary doctorate in 2003, Dr. Daniel H. Lopez of New Mexico Tech said, “In a real sense, this is not an honorary doctorate at all. Charles B. Moore has been a leader in the field of atmospheric physics, and he has done research that would have earned him a Ph.D. many times over, had he consented to accept one before now.”

Dr. Paul Krehbiel, an atmospheric researcher who knew Moore well, commented, “Charlie was a person of many talents. He was a pioneer in the study of thunderstorms and lightning and a font of scientific knowledge. He was a true student of history and a historian in his own right, and possessed an excellent memory. He was a mentor and educator of many, myself included. His legacy lives on in the ideas, studies and projects that he developed and worked on over his long and amazingly varied career.”

Dr. William Winn, who worked with Charles Moore for many years, said, “Charles inspired me and many other young investigators with his enthusiasm, independent thinking, and precise use of the English language, and he was a delightful companion because of his good humor and storytelling skills."

-- NMT --

I've managed to get through the first year of FSR and I thought it would be worth telling you what was in there [phenomenologically] as an overview. What this might ultimately be worth is that we could see how the UFO phenomenon gradually changed over the years, at least in our eyes. [that is, if I can keep finding a little time to keep this up--patience is an operative word, I'm afraid]. Here are some very crude statistics. Counting cases: I have made a decent count of cases but it is still a bit arbitrary [ex. If somebody goes on about someone like Adamski, I don't count it. If there's a single line on an incident in somebody's article, I probably won't count it. Etc. The point is, you might get a slightly different count than I do, if you were doing this, but it would probably be close.] That said, there were 84 cases mentioned. 62 of these things were what I call "objects" ["distant", not close encounters, things where the witnesses said that they saw structure {not simply a light}]. Hynek would have called these "daylight disks", and for this era he would have been mostly correct. The vast majority of these things were described as "disks", "saucers", "ovals". Very few other forms were noted. [I just call them "objects" by the way because some of this type of sighting occurs at night and some of it is not disk-like. This created confusion for Hynek's system as time went on]. Of the other 22 cases, 9 were "lights" and one was only a vaportrail. Three of the remaining 12 were Photo cases [I place all film cases in their own file]. Four cases seem to be CE1s. Two are CE3s. There are two "crash" claims [I included Hughie Green's Roswell mention as one of them], and only one was a CE2. As you can see, as far as this era [this is FSR for 1955] and this reference source is concerned, UFOs are plain-vanilla high-flying disks, just like the USAF and Don Keyhoe envisioned them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to the rudimentary state of FSR at its beginnings, few cases were reported in much detail and therefore it was hard to be impressed with many of them. I was left to my intuitions as to any feeling about the "goodness" of the case as described. There were, however, three airliner cases which "felt" good at this distance. a). the best of these seemed to be a New Zealand case of October 30, 1955, reported by a National Airlines crew. This light was like a "revolving marine beacon" and paced the aircraft for five minutes. the crew felt that the light was seen beneath the cloud bank and climbed through the cloud bank when they did. What particularly intrigued me about this report was that two fishermen on the surface also reported the light keeping pace with the airliner--thus knocking the mistaken-celestial-object explanation for a loop. b). On about May 25, the crew of a Portuguese Air Lines plane reported that they had seen a UFO on their flight from Lisbon to London. It was cigar-shaped and fast. It approached from the left and flew under the nose of the plane. Its color was silver, and it had no exhaust. Someone tried to explain this as a child's balloon. [will the stupidity never end?] c). On February 2, 1955, the crew of a Linea Aeropostal Venezolana crew reported an encounter between Valera and Barquisimeto, Venezuela. This was a low-level flight [c. 7500 feet]. The object was Top-shaped, green above, red middle, and white bottom. It closed on their plane and flew alongside. The middle section emitted bright flashes, and the thing spun counterclockwise. It seemed to have portholes on its lower area. If these three cases were accurately reported and responsibly checked by anyone, you would almost think that you had "proved" a true UFO phenomenon on their merits alone.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were two Entity reports [not counting the "contactees" like Adamski and Nelson]. One of them might fall into the contactee category but I do not know enough about the case. This event allegedly happened on October 21, 1954. The witness was a lady living in an old farmhouse in the village of Ranton, England. She said that earlier in the day she had been feeling, quite persistently that "something" was going to happen. Then, in the later afternoon, she witnessed a 25-foot diameter saucer come down to her garden [only 20 feet away]. In the wall of the saucer was a transparent window, through which she saw two occupants. They had high foreheads, and golden hair which dropped to their shoulders. They stared at her until she became quite terrified. The witness then ran inside her house. The reason that I made the remark about contacteeism is that this lady considered herself a psychic, and believed that she had many instances of spirit manifestations. Whether she went on to combine these claims, I don't know. --------- The second entity report is one of my favorites. This is the August 20, 1954 experience had by two ladies in Mosjoen, Norway. The reason that I like this case is that we have two credible witnesses and a quick on the scene investigation. The two ladies [adult sisters] were out picking berries, when they thought that they saw another person doing the same thing. On approach it was a man, medium height, long brown hair and dark complected. He waved and they returned it. His clothing was like a fitted overall, and cinched with a broad belt. There were no buttons nor any fasteners visible. He emanated friendliness and security. They tried to talk to one another, but despite the multilingual abilities of the sisters, they were unable to understand anything he said [and apparently vice-versa]. He drew circles on the ground, as if [they thought] trying to indicate something about space. Then he signaled for them to come look at something, and they went along. It was a ten-foot diameter saucer , perhaps 4 1/2 feet deep. It was a metallic grey-blue. they watched from quite close as he opened a hatch and crawled in. The saucer rose, humming like a bumblebee, rotated rapidly, hovered at about 100 feet, spun faster and flew away in a great burst of speed. The ladies decided not to tell anyone, because they were sure to be called crazy, but one could not resist telling her husband, so the story [thankfully] came out. The site was quickly investigated by family members but no traces were found. Several outside investigators also got involved soon, and all interviews continued to be coherent. I am sure that most will disagree, but I view this encounter as one of the best CE3s in our literature. The case was attempted to be written off as a wayward US military helicopter pilot, but the number of discrepancies about that could fill a page. A few days later the soldier who was allegedly involved said that he had nothing to do with any of that and that any such claim was a joke. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were few other cases that gave me a confident air. I mentioned the Peseux, Switzerland case the other day. Another that was at least interesting was one of the first "engine stoppage" cases on record. There wasn't much information on this, but what it said was that in early October 1955, two men were driving a truck on a mountain road near Agrinion, Greece when they saw a luminous saucer approaching. As it flew overhead, their truck's engine stopped, and they felt faint.----- Another intriguing case, rather unique, was the Titicus Reservoir [NY] incident of September 17, 1955. There a husband and wife heard a loud splash and watched as a pink mushroom shaped object bobbed up to the surface and then subsided. Then there appeared two parallel lights at the water's surface further away. This thing seemed to be about 15 feet long and causing great turbulence in the water. The witnesses rowed generally in the object's direction to get a better look. Whenever they moved directly at it, it would come quickly in their direction, frightening them. when they moved off, so too would it. Finally thoroughly frightened, they rowed back as they came and retreated to their camp. The thing ultimately, soundlessly, moved rapidly down the lake and disappeared. A strange business, indeed.
That's the thumbnail condensation of the first year of FSR. I will try to follow on, and also to sprinkle in other [non-UFO] topics when I can. Until then: Watch the Skies!

My oldest sister and I were both born at Walker. I don't know the exact date of the events but my father worked flight line security as an Air Policeman between 51-54.

My mother related to me that when they were first assigned to Walker that there had never been any mention or scuttlebutt about the "Roswell" incident from the 40s. One night he came home from work(they lived in base housing)and she said he was very frightened and white as a sheet. He said that there had been an incident on the flight line and that afterwards he had been told that everything about it was classified and if he spoke about it he would be prosecuted.

He told her that a disc shaped object had landed on the flight line and that they had surrounded it...at a distance...and it sat there for approximately 2 hours. She said that all of security, DCM, base commander etc responded to the incident. They photographed it non-stop. There was no interaction between anyone and the craft and after about 2 hours on the ground it simply lifted off and flew off as quickly as it had arrived.

Later she said they had another incident with the same craft but this time there was some limited interaction between the it and one of the APs vehicles. She said that this time as my Dad told her it did not set down but hovered over the base for a period of time and for a little while seemed to follow one of the APs vehicles.

My Dad left the AF after 54 and never talked about this to anyone that I'm aware of....he passed away about 15 years ago. I overheard my Mom talking to someone about this when I was younger but never discussed it with her until later in life. A little over a year ago my Mom passed away after battling cancer. Prior to her death we setup a video camera to record my mom as she talked about different things....on one of these days I asked her about the Walker incident and she retold the account again basically as I had overheard it years ago.

As there were a lot of people that supposedly were aware of these incidents I've always been surprised that no one has ever come forward about it.

*        *        *

Walker Air Force Base

angelfire.com- Walker Air Force Base was located South of Roswell, New Mexico and started life as Roswell Army Air Field in 1941. During World War Two. The base was home to Military Flying Training Center and Bombardier School, with several auxiliary fields in the outlying area. The area was spotted with training bases, including Hobbs and Carlsbad. Roswell AAF became Walker AFB on January 13, 1948 and was deactivated on June 30, 1967. After closure Walker was taken over by the city of Roswell and became the Roswell Industrial Air Center.
Read more here.

********************************

Recent studies seem to demonstrate that prescription antidepressant medications fail to work any better on minimally or moderately depressed people than placebos. But if one reflects an extremely deep depression, that's when they might provide some benefit. I guess that's a reasonable connection -- that the power of the mind can influence the, um, power of the mind, and a little ol' sugar pill can sometimes work wonders. Apparently.

Research also emphasizes a heightened risk of suicidal thoughts -- the very desires these pharmaceutical miracles were intended to obliterate -- for patients on antidepressants. Maybe gonna be a few professional mind adjustors hanging up their credentials and learning how to sell flowers on street corners, once this gets around. Good thing somebody invented "sex addiction" and other conveniences to keep the chain letter going. Some of those emotional excavation folks won't be happy until everybody on the planet has a DSM (medical diagnosis) code number stamped on our foreheads.

But forget the patients. I'm more concerned about uncounted members constituting the mental health community itself who secretly take such medications in order to conquer their own depression. I mean, they must, after listening to and absorbing everybody's head clutter day after day after agonizing day. Knowing, now, how such drugs can betray both patients and doctors, will we see psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals turning violent? Road-rage directed toward the couch? Will they fly airplanes into the FDA and corporate pharmaceutical buildings, realizing now that they've been self-ingesting and treating patients with medications equivalent to thin air? Or maybe, like a birthday sweater destined not to fit, it really is just the thought that counts. The cure. Yeah, it's a stress-filled world, with the abnormal poised to assume normalcy, as presumably conventional societal pressure-relief valves collapse like prison cells of cotton candy.

Quick, nurse, a round of Thorazine (ol' reliable) for everybody, and order a few million cans of aerosolized road-rage inhibitor, available by prescription only, side-effects to be determined later. Oh well, if all else fails, I guess there's always Scientology.

So, just whom on this troubled planet WOULDN'T require a 12-step program to overcome the psycho-malady of the month? According to a relatively dated, yet nevertheless important, 1993 study -- UFO observers.

The November, 1993 issue of The Journal of Abnormal Psychology featured some interesting results of a study conducted by four psychology researchers affiliated with Carleton University in Ottawa. 49 people claiming UFO encounters were studied -- along with other willing participants -- and evaluated using standard psychological tests to measure participants' intelligence and capacity for various mental disorders. The UFO witnesses were found to be "normal" and, in fact, UFO observers were determined to be somewhat more intelligent than others in the study who indicated no UFO experiences.

Researchers attempted to explore the possibility that UFO sightings might be associated with epilepsy, outright fantasies or some yet unknown abnormality of the brain's temporal lobe, but instead found normal subjects without mental baggage.

Still, while I'm generally comfortable accepting these results, I was concerned that the project solicited participants through newspaper advertisements -- essentially, the same approach taken by Dr. Susan Clancy in way of conjuring her "sleep paralysis" diagnosis for those who believe they were abducted by UFO entities. And, like Clancy, the Ottawa researchers also latched onto the sleep paralysis theory, believing it "most probably" responsible for a quarter of the participants' alleged UFO experiences. Most probably? How convenient. What about the other 75 percent? And what about the ads? I guess my fantasy research team's newspaper ad would read, "Captured by a UFO? Bothered by aliens in the night? Besieged by visions of Phil Klass in your dreams? Call this number. . ." Somehow, I question the scientific validity of dealing with folks drawn to a UFO study via newspaper advertisements. But the Canadian project apparently stumbled upon something worthwhile in this arena.

Canadian researcher Patricia Cross, accomplishing the study as her master's degree thesis, concluded: "Our findings clearly contradict the previously held notions that people who seemingly had bizarre experiences, such as missing time and communicating with aliens, have wild imaginations and are easily swayed into believing the unbelievable."

A UFO encounter group apparently conducting lives drenched in normal mental functions? Pity. Otherwise, they'd have been shovel-ready for antidepressants. Here, open up and swallow this. . .

PANIC IN THE STREETS: If anybody needs antidepressants this week, it's the FAA and members of the hysterical public currently pointing fingers and darned nearly fainting because an air traffic controller at JFK Airport in NY allowed his children to accompany him to work and actually give instructions to pilots. Pilots themselves apparently had no problems with This Serious Infraction Of The Rules, and there was obviously a cuteness factor involved as they laughed off the occasion. Airport flights were never in danger because the veteran controllers were right there, listening to every word the kids said and, by the way, those children's voices demonstrated infinitely more clarity than anything you get from speakers outside of fast food establishments, where you can't really be sure whether somebody asked if you wanted fries or flies with "that." So. . .

So, to an anal-retentive society, increasingly intent upon elimination of personal risk, while simultaneously putting a lock and key on everything we enjoy, I say -- good for you, kids, and congratulations, air traffic controller dad -- you gave your kids an experience most will never have, and maybe the thrill of being in the middle of the action will profoundly influence their future. As for my government -- hey, that wasn't exactly the Taliban in the tower -- cut dad and the kids some slack and concentrate instead on protecting national borders, where the real danger lurks.

More Dublin and Stephenville sightings are being reported during this first week of March, 2010. Here are two of them.

I will update if more sightings are reported.- SW

Note: Reports have spelling corrects. To see original reports, click on case numbers.

*        *        *

MUFON Case # 22135
Event Date: 03/04/ 2010 20:20
City: Dublin/Stephenville
Region: Texas
Summary: 30-40 large yellow tint lights flashing in a round shape for a few minutes

I was driving from Stephenville toward my parents house which is a Dublin address. As I was approaching their house which is on the left side of fm 242, Dublin texas I saw about 30 or more huge lights with a yellow tint flashing, one after the other, in an oval to round shape. They appeared very low to the ground, the shape appeared to tilt to one side slightly.

Turning into the drive way, the house obstructed my view of the UFO lights. I began honking my horn as I drove into the drive way, trying to get my mom and daughter's attention so they would come outside and see what was going on.

As I ran up the walkway to the front door I could barely see the UFO lights. When they came outside the lights were gone, BUT we saw and heard 10-15 jets flying much higher in the area above their house. Funny thing though, I heard no noise coming from the UFOs.

The only thing I felt was excitement, I was wearing extremely high heels and am 5 months pregnant, otherwise I would have ran toward the lights, because they appeared that close. About 20 feet behind my parent's house in the pasture just behind. I was the only car driving at this time on a dark farm to market road.

*        *        *

MUFON Case # 22138
Event Date: 03/04/ 2010 20:15 GMT
City: Stephenville
Region: Texas
Summary: four square orange light that disappeared one at a time

On 03/04/2010 at approximately 20:15 I was stopped at a stop sign Wolf Nursery and the north west
loop.

When I looked South to make sure traffic was clear I noticed four Orange lights to the Southwest. I noticed the light were from East to West and started to disappear one at a time. I told my wife and she did not see anything at the time.

I turned south and drove to water tower road to get away from all the city lights. On the way my wife saw several flashing light to the West of the water tower. We stopped and saw multiple flashing lights that were moving from West to east.

The object was moving to the east toward Granbury and was followed by what I believed to be air planes that were very fast, I cannot say that the planes following were military or not, I do know that object left after the planes arrived.

*        *        *

UPDATE!

This was just reported to LITS, that the lake at Granbury, Texas was the location of another sighting, on March 4, 2010.
I hope that Sharon sees this and will elaborate on the sighting.-SW

          *
Event Date: 03/04/10
City: Granbury, TX
Description: Large disc shaped object with multiple lights hovering above the lake

*********************************

The Washington National UFO Sighting Press Conference, Part 7

Please note, as we begin to talk about Major Fournet and Lieutenant Holcomb, who were in the radar room on the second Saturday, they are nowhere to be found at the press conference.

Reporter: You had two experts over there last Saturday night, Major Fournet and
Lieutenant Holcomb, who described themselves as radar technicians and intelligence officers. What was their opinion?

Samford: May I try to make another answer and ask for support or negation, on the quality of the radar operator. I personally don’t feel that is necessarily associated with quality of radar operators because radar operators of great quality are going to be confused by the things which now appear and may appear in radar. The ability to use the radar for the thing it was designed for is, I believe, dependent upon the thing that they see doing a normal act. If it does a normal act, then it becomes identified as the thing that they thought it was and then it pulls itself along through this mass of indication and they say, "That one has normal processes." I think that a description of a GCA landing has some bearing on that in which to get associated with the GCA you have to make a certain number of queries and do a certain number of things and then you become identified through the fact that you obey. If you obey, then you have an identity and you can then be followed with precision. So I wouldn’t like to say that this is a function of inadequate radar operations. I think it’s a thing that can happen to any radar operator. If he sees something in there and says, "That one is neither behaving nor any other normal pattern." What is it? Curiosity stimulus, any other kind of stimulus can result in overemphasis at any particular time on any radar scope. These recently appear to have been much more solid returns than ordinarily classifiable by the arguments that I have just given. Would you address yourself to what I’ve just said.

Reporter: Yes. What do the experts think? That was the question.

Samford: The experts?

Reporter: The ones that saw it last Saturday night. What did they report to you?

Reporter: Two of them saw it in --

Reporter: What did they say?

Samford: They said they made good returns.

Reporter: Did they draw any conclusions as to what they were, whether they were clouds?

Samford: They made good returns and they think that they ought to be followed up.

Reporter: But now you come to the general belief that it was some either heat inversions or some other phenomena without substance.

Samford: The phrase "without substance" bothers me a little.

Reporter: Well, could you --

Samford: -- say what we do think?

Reporter: Yes.

Samford: I think that the highest probability is that these are phenomena associated with the intellectual and scientific interests that we are on the road to learn more about but that there is nothing in them that is associated with material or vehicles or missiles that are directed against the United States.

Reporter: General, you said that -- can you stop that short of the United States, sir, or the menace to the United States?

Samford: Well, that was the -- I think that is the part that I believed. Now, what was it that I would have said otherwise?

Reporter: Well, you said were not associated with vehicles --

Reporter: Materials.

Reporter: Missiles.

Reporter: Period.

Reporter: Material, vehicles, and missiles directed against the United States.

Reporter: The question whether these are hostile or not makes very little difference. What we’re trying to get at is are you eliminating, excluding from consideration a missile, a vehicle, or any other material object that might be flying through the air other than sound or light or some other intangible.

Reporter: Somebody from this planet or some other planet violating our air space.
(Laughter)

Samford: The astronomers are our best advisers, of course, in this business of visitors from elsewhere. The astronomers photograph the sky continuously perhaps with the most adequate photography in existence and the complete absence of things which would have to be in their appearance for many days and months to come from somewhere else. It doesn’t cause them to have any enthusiasm whatsoever in thinking about this other side of it.

Reporter: Have any astronomical laboratories reported any sightings whatsoever or any astronomers?

Samford: I don’t recall. Captain Ruppelt, do you know whether we’ve had reports from astronomical laboratories or observatories?

Ruppelt: No, sir. None have ever had any real bearing.

The question as posed and the answer as posed, at this point are misleading. Astronomers had made UFO reports on a number of occasions. Dr. Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto, had made a UFO sighting report to the Air Force. He was not at an observatory at the time, but in his backyard, with his wife, but the real point is that here was a scientist, one with impressive credentials, who had made a UFO report to the Air Force.

More recently, studies have been conducted using professional astronomers and engineers as the subjects. It was reported that these people reported UFOs at a higher rate than the general population. In other words, it would be expected that astronomers, who watch the sky on a regular basis, would see UFOs more frequently that the general population and they did, according to a scientifically reported study.

In fact, because they are familiar with the sky and the astronomical phenomena in it, they would be able to eliminate many of the mundane answers that confuse and confound the general population. Their sightings, normally of longer duration, are not easily explained by the mundane and are, therefore, more likely to be labeled as unidentified.

But there was another point that is generally overlooked. According to Dr. J. Allen Hynek’s survey of his fellow astronomers, most astronomers, in 1952, would not have been inclined to report a UFO sighting. Hynek wrote, "I took the time to talk rather seriously with a few of them, and to acquaint them with the fact that some of the sightings were truly puzzling and not at all easily explainable. Their interest was almost immediately aroused, indicating that their general lethargy is due to lack of information on the subject. And certainly another contributing factor... is their overwhelming fear of publicity. One headline in the nation’s papers to the effect ‘Astronomer Sees Flying Saucer’ would be enough to brand the astronomer as questionable among his colleagues."

So, there is a very real possibility, according to the information available, that astronomers do see UFOs, but they don’t report them with any frequency. Ruppelt had to know that Hynek was conducting the study, even if it had not been completed, and he had to know that, at least, one astronomer had reported a UFO.

To be fair, it must be noted that General Samford might not have had the information, or that it might not have been reported to the Air Force at the highest lever. The general attitude of the Air Force was that if something wasn’t reported to them, it simply didn’t exist.
