1) Color code your ads to match your web site palette *exactly*. Don't use frames around your ads. Instead, in the AdSense code generation interface, make sure you choose the same color as your page background for the ad frame and the ad background.

When choosing the ad heading colors, match them to the *exact* color of your page headings. Use the exact same ad background shade as your page background. Use the exact same ad text font and color as the text on your pages. You can see an example of this color-matching on my search engine advice blog - notice the 4 link ad unit and skyscraper text ad unit on the left hand side under the headings Ads by Google as you scroll down the page? The link and text colors are identical to the color palette used throughout the rest of the page.

Near enough is NOT good enough. If you can't quite get the color matching right, use Google's built in color palette together with the RGB to HEX or vice versa color converter on this page. That handy little tool was a life saver for me.

This is probably the one single tweak that made the most difference to my commission levels.

2) Try not to use the traditional horizontal banner style or leaderboard image ads because people are blind to them.

3) Use Google's own AdSense optimization tips and visual heat map to assist you in deciding where on your page to place your AdSense ad code.

4) Research competitive keywords using a keyword research tool such as Keyword Discovery or grab a list of the most popular keywords from various sources and use them in your web site pages where relevant. Targeting popular keywords should trigger AdSense ads on your pages that utilize those keywords. The more popular the keyword or phrase, the higher AdWords advertisers are generally willing to pay per click for it so the higher your commission on those clicks.

5) Incorporate the AdSense code into your page so that the ads look like a regular part of your site.

6) Use Google's new 4 and 5 link ad units wherever possible. They seem to have a much higher Click Through Rate (CTR) than regular ad styles. You can view all the AdSense ad formats here.

7) Place images next to your ads to attract the eyes. You can see this in place on the search engine article library page at the bottom where 3 images draw your attention to the bottom of the page. But be careful here - the use of arrows or symbols enticing viewers to click are NOT allowed by Google and publishers may NOT label the Google ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements".

8) Use the full allowance of multiple AdSense ads on each of your pages - 3 regular AdSense ads, plus 1 link unit. Use careful placement of these ads so they blend into your site and don't distract from your content. Clever use of this allowance can be seen on this page about bad Internet dating stories where you see:

- 1 horizontal 4 link ad unit towards the top of the page under the first paragraph
- 1 vertical skyscraper text ad unit about halfway down the left hand side under "Sponsor Links"
- 1 vertical skyscraper image ad unit down the left hand side under "Sponsor Links"
- 1 horizontal text banner unit at the bottom of the page with images above each ad.

You can also include 1 AdSense referral button in addition to the 3 other units.

9) Tailor your page content to a particular niche or focus. Page content that is tailored towards a specific theme is more likely to trigger AdWords ads that closely match the content and are therefore more likely to interest your visitors and inspire them to click. Don't create pages merely for the sake of placing AdSense ads. Visitors (and search engines) can see through this ruse in an instant.

10) Use custom Ad Channels for each of your ad placements, for example, "Top 5 Link Unit Blue Palette" or "Left Side Navigation Image Skyscraper" etc. Tweak, track and measure the success of each of these custom channels so you know what gives you the highest CTR. Some ad formats and colors will work better than others, but you won't know which until you test, test and test some more!

I received my Nuffnang cheque sometime in late Jun 09, slightly more than 1 month after cash-in my earnings from Nuffnang. And this very first payment is worth S$110.28! Yeah!

However even though Nuffnang pays fast, I am still rather disappointed with its number of "handpicked" ads, which resulted in no ads showing frequently.

2. Profit From Spam: If you have a pharmacy affiliate or payday loan site then many people will consider the site spam by default. But if you tastefully write an article about such topics and then just happen to have AdSense on the page you are not viewed as a spammer by the general web public - Google (and AdSense) are a ubiquitous part of the web.

3. People Under-estimate Your Earnings: Many web publishers have published AdSense sites and made nothing. Thus if they see you publishing an AdSense site they may assume that your site earns nothing, and be less likely to clone your site and more willing to link at your site than they would be if your site appeared more commercially oriented.

4. The Informational Bias of Organic Links:Information is generally considered more citation-worthy than pages that sell stuff. Thus if you monetize via AdSense you can get inbound links to the money making pages without having to buy links. Adsense has become very popular, people even refer to it as the new "internet gold rush". In a way it is true that Adsense is can be a very profitable way to earn money on the internet with one or more websites. However as with all popular stuff, there are always scam artists that are monetising on peoples urge to learn. This new breed of scam artists are The Adsense Scammers.

The Adsense Scammers usually use some very intriguing ad copy (marketing text) on their websites, and tries to lure new customers in with screenshots claiming big Adsense income or big increases in Adsense income from a certain date and forward. The truth about most of these screenshots are sadly, that anyone can do such a screenshot - and then alter it in any graphics program like Adobe Photoshop. The image then reflects a very "coloured" truth, and this is possible due to the changes Google has made in its policies to allow publishers to disclose their earnings, but on the same time not to allow publishers to reveal impressions, clicks and ctr.

So what kind of products should you be careful about purchasing?

The Adsense scam products can actually be categorised into the following:

1. "The BIG Adsense Secret" E-book.

Adsense Scam claim: Several websites claims to have the "unrevealed Adsense secret" that you simply can't live without! Usually it is claimed that these secrets will "skyrocket" your Adsense earnings virtually overnight. You can buy yourself access to this "untold information" for only $30-$100.

Adsense Fact: There are no secrets to reveal about Adsense. Anyone can earn with Adsense, and to improve performance read up on ad placement, ad colours, website content and website traffic. All this information is freely available here on Adsenseguide, and can also be found on various forums on the internet.

2. "Million Dollar Keyword Lists".

Adsense Scam claim: When you purchase a list of "fresh top paying keywords" you can literally skyrocket your Adsense earnings, simply by changing a few words on your pages. These scam sites claims that they have developed new techniques to finding these keywords, and that their members/customers are making a "killing" creating pages based on these keywords. It is not unusual to meet claims of people making $10-$20 per click using these lists. The Adsense Scam Keyword lists can be yours either on a monthly subscription from $20 per month, or for purchase for anything from $20-$200 per list.

Adsense Fact: Yes, you can improve your earnings per click by changing/optimizing your page content. However, the obscene claims of clicks that pays $10-$20 or more are nothing more then "clever" marketing in 95% of the cases. The reason is that Google (and the advertisers), are very selective about which sites that are allowed to display these high paying keywords. Usually, advertiser select to only show these ads on Google's search result screen, meaning that they never get displayed on publisher websites. The so called "new techniques" used to generate these keyword lists, are freely available to anyone interested, and only requires a bit of work on your part. You can download a 100% Free list of keywords here, and if you want to further examine keywords simply do the following:

Signup with Google Adwords, and then use the keyword sandbox tool to find a lot related keywords to your initial keyword idea. Then simply copy/paste the results into the traffic estimator tool at Adwords, and you will get an idea of the value of the given keyword.

It is crucial to understand that there are many factors that are at work determining keyword value and the actual payout. First off, Google will take its share of the click price (educated guesses is in the range of 30-40%). Then we have the earlier ad placement factor, advertisers might only want to pay high for ads displayed on Google's own sites, meaning that they will never reach your site. And then if the ad does get to your page, your visitors needs to click on the exact ad. The last factor I will discuss here is Country/location. Advertisers can choose to only display their ads based on specific regions/countries/languages. What this means is that they can choose to display their ads on websites that are hosted in i.e. Spain, with Spanish content, and are only interested in visitors from let's say Spain. So if one of these ads, does get served on your site for some reason, there are many factors that will drive the click price down.

Often the same keyword lists are sold on many domains, always claiming to be fresh and "unshared". So be careful not ending up buying the same lists more than once ;-)

3. "Automated Adsense Software".

Adsense Scam claim: This is one of my "favourite" Adsense Scams! Visitors are encouraged to purchase some "set and forget software" that will generate Adsense income on "auto pilot". Most of the software does nothing more then steal (yes, I said steal) content from sites through various scraping methods (reads a webpage and gets the content from it, or through rss feeds). All you will have to do is upload the script to your website, enter a few details and the script creates thousand of content pages - just waiting to put cash in your pocket. Each of these "unique Adsense cash scripts", can be yours for somewhere between $100-$1000+.

Adsense Fact: Scripts can be good to help you in the process of writing content (note: Writing). This is usually called CMS scripts (content management systems), and is a great way to create your design once, and from then on only focus on writing content for your pages in a simple web based text editor.

The "Automated Adsense Software" is basically nothing more then a very basic CMS system, but instead of you doing the content the script is configured to grab it from all over the internet. These scripts use many more or less sneaky methods of doing this, but the end result is the same - they are cluttering the search engines with duplicate and useless content. If you decide to use any of these scripts, you should be very careful for several reasons that are not so obvious to most people:

You risk getting banned from Adsense, because you are very likely to violate the terms of "creating websites purely for Adsense".

You risk getting blacklisted from the search engines, because you are using "scraped" content.

You are likely to "turn on the warnings lights" at the search engines, because you have a new site with 1000's of content pages from day 1.

Don't count on any visitors returning to your site (actually you need return visitors to perform well with Adsense), because they only find useless duplicate content.

You often have little or no control of SEO optimizing the outputted pages.
You are likely to getting yourself a "bad reputation". Your name is a "big asset" on the internet.

You have no idea of what the script is doing, it could be driving traffic to other sites, stealing e-mails etc.

4. "Read/Listen - Learn to how I made thousands with Adsense".

Adsense Scam claim: Oh boy, this is another great Adsense scam category. By simply reading a short report or even a long e-book about Adsense, you will have an "arsenal of Adsense secrets" ready to bring in the big bucks. The first chapters are usually filled with general Adsense information, then followed by the "life story" of the author or a friend of the author. Then we arrive at the "juicy" part (usually only 1 chapter), that again and again describes how to position your ads, what colours to use, ad blending and perhaps you will even find a way to "Skyrocket Adsense CTR". Often these reports and e-books tells you to purchase this and that software, so that you have anything you need ready at hand. These Adsense reports and Adsense e-books are sold from anywhere between $9.95 and up to over $100. Lately it seems that these reports and e-books have "evolved" a bit, so that you now can simply listen to the author or even view a few "power packed videos" online.

Adsense Fact: The first thing that comes to mind with all these products are "Damn - this guy must be a nutcase!". He or she has found the "one and only Adsense secret" and is making a killing (see the usual attached screenshot). If they had really found the "big secret", why on earth would they share it with anyone else? Sure they claim to be a nice person, want to share information etc. The real fact is however, that 95% of these products are nothing less then created to scam innocent people like you to pay. Flashy e-book covers, income statements / examples - usually both Adsense screenshots/checks, affiliate checks, bank statements are all displayed with the only purpose of talking to your greed. It is not unlikely to find testimonials or statements from people worldwide like "John/Canada , Lisa / New York" etc. Adsense statements and testimonials like these are part of the sales page psychology - to make you think "wow! Lisa is from New York like me, and had never done it before - if she can then so can I!".

Often these products are "backed" by a 100% refund policy if you make no money using their Adsense tips and tricks. Great huh? Well, actually they can refuse to give you a refund at any time, because if you use Adsense - how will you prove that even a small increase isn't based on the information they "provided"?

Google AdSense has is a very hot topic in forums, discussions and newsletters all over the Internet. There are many incredible tales of pile of cold hard cash to be made and the million of dollars already made by home-based entreprenuerers. In simple words, Google AdSense rules the internet marketing business and is now considered the easiest way to making money online. Based on my research online and my personal experience, the best performing AdSense advertisement size with the highest Click Through Rate (CTR) is:

Large Rectangle (336 x 280)

The Large Rectangle (336 x 280) ad unit gets the most clicks primarily because it does not look like the standard ads people are very familiar with since the beginning of Internet. And the most familiar ads are of course the ubiquitous picture banner ads.

Where To Place Google AdSense Ads on My Webpages?

Take a look at the picture of this "heat map" from Google. It illustrates the ideal placing on a sample webpage layout. The colors range from dark orange (represent highest Click Through Rate - CTR) to light yellow (represent lowest CTR).

The result is not surprising given way humans tend to read, from left to right, from top to bottom. When reading a webpage, we also tend to go straight for the content, after a cursory glance of the header and surrounding fringe area of the webpage.

However what surprises me is that the area near the bottom, just before the page footer performs pretty well too. According to Google, this is because the reader will look out for something to do after finishing the article. But I find this contradictory aa the area just below the primary content performs badly.

From my personal experience, the area right above or to the left the your content should perform the best in terms of AdSense CTR.

Using this as a starting guide, you should experiment a little to get the most optimal CTR for your webpage.

AdSense is On Twitter

The Google AdSense Team officially announced that they are on Twitter from Mar 2009. Their main aim of using Twitter is to communicate with AdSense publishers like you and me, using the Twitter service. According to them, their "tweets will be a mix of fresh product news, optimization tips, interesting links, upcoming events, and possibly even pictures of our dogs".

However do note that the AdSense Team will not respond via Twitter to questions regarding individual AdSense accounts. Their advice is for publishers to continue to visit the AdSense Help Centre and Forum to troubleshoot our specific issues.

AdSense Revenue Formula

Mathematically, your AdSense revenue is derived using a simple formula which you should know by heart:

AdSense Revenue = Page Impressions x CTR x Average Revenue per Click

Page Impressions

In this context, traffic is the number of times a Google advertisement is displayed on your website or blog for the relevant period of time. If your pages are seen 2,000 times during a month, your traffic is then 2,000 provided you place Google AdSense ads on all your web pages. To get 2,000 page impressions a month you can, for example, have 500 visitors viewing an average 4 pages per visitor or 1,000 visitors viewing 2 pages per visitor.

Click Through Rate (CTR)

CTR is the number of clicks you get out of your total page impressions. When you achieve CTR of 1%, it means that a traffic of 2,000 resulted in 20 clicks.

Average Revenue per Click

This is the average amount of money Google pays you for each click. The process that determines the revenue per click is will be discussed in other articles.

AdSense is an online advertisement program run by Google. Website and/or Blog owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image, and more recently, video advertisements on their sites. These owners will than be known as publishers as they publish the advertisements on their sites. These advertisements are managed by Google and generate earnings for the publishers on either a per-click or per-impression basis.

Google uses its Internet search technology to serve advertisements based on website content, the user's geographical location, and many other factors. Those who want to advertise with Google's targeted advertisement system may enroll through AdWords, a sister program of AdSense. These people are known as advertisers. AdSense has become a popular method of placing advertising on a website because the advertisements are less intrusive than most banners and pop-ups, and the content of the advertisements is often relevant to the website.

Currently, AdSense uses JavaScript code to serve the advertisements into a participating website. All the publishers need to do is to log-on to their AdSense accounts, customise the relevant advertisements they would like to publish on their sites, and the codes will be auto-generated by Google AdSense, which can then be copied and embeded into their sites.
