Steven Levy just wrote a new book about Google called In the Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives. It succeeds the most on the “how Google thinks” part–if you want to understand how Google thinks, get an overview of Google, or understand its impact on the world, this is the book for you.

I think anyone interested in Google would enjoy this book. People who don’t know much about Google will get a good overview. People who are really interested in Google or the search industry will get a better understanding of how Google thinks. And even if you’re an expert, you’ll probably learn a few new tidbits. For example, Levy reveals the identity of GoogleGuy, the Google representative who answered questions from webmasters as early as 2001. You’ll also hear about inside-Google allusions like Audrey Fino or Emerald Sea.

Given that Levy isn’t a computer scientist or a Googler, I wasn’t sure how deftly he would internalize or explain how Google looks at the world, but for the most part he nails it. The book, like many accounts of Google, emphasizes the company’s focus on making decisions based on data and logic. At some points I felt that Levy pushed this point too hard. On the other hand, I recently had a conversation with a Google colleague about Lady Gaga, and the word “scalability” cropped up a lot more than you would expect for a conversation about a pop star. :) I don’t think Google is full of purely left-brained eggheads, but I’m willing to concede that compared to the average population, we probably skew further in that direction than most places.

Reading the book, I realized how much you could write about the different facets of Google. Even in 400+ pages, some topics get short shrift; it felt like Levy covered Google News in a single, condensed paragraph. But Levy gives complete and clear explanations for the parts of Google that receive his focus.

Here’s a simple litmus test: if you’ve read more than 2-3 of my blog posts in the past or follow me on Twitter, you’ll probably enjoy reading In The Plex.

Keywords and click rates are their bread and butter. "We are trying to understand the mechanisms behind the metrics," says Qing Wu, one of Varian's minions. His specialty is forecasting, so now he predicts patterns of queries based on the season, the climate, international holidays, even the time of day. "We have temperature data, weather data, and queries data, so we can do correlation and statistical modeling," Wu says. Make Money Online With Google Trends

Google trends, its basically a Google tool that lets you discover the latest patterns in keyword search behavior. So you can see what topics are hot at the moment. To make money with this method, you have to combine Google trend with CPA offers. Here is how to make money online using Google trends and CPA offers:

Pick a trend

First things first, visit Google trends and pick a hot subject that you would like to use. I would suggest you pick a trend that you have some knowledge about, or at least can quickly learn the basics of it, doing so will make it easier for you to make money with the trend. To make it easy to understand and follow for everyone. lets assume you pick Apple iPod.

Pick a CPA offer

For this, obviously you need to be registered with a CPA network or two. If you aren’t, then register with a few. I highly recommend MaxBounty as I use it myself and they always pay on time and have a very friendly affiliate managers. There are also many other legit CPA networks out there. Login to your CPA network site and search for simple zip code or email submit offers, preferably those that giveaway apple ipod. Zip and email offers pay $1 to $5 for each lead and those leads have to only submit an email address or a zip code in order for you to get a commission. They are much easier to promote and convert, since people don’t have to spend any money to get a free product.

Build a simple one page blog

This page will serve as your landing page, where you will have a link to your CPA offer. You can either use free blogging platforms like blogger(blogspot) to build a blog in a few minuets. I would suggest you buy your own unique domain and hosting. You could buy a .info domain for $0.99 and $5 a month will cover your hosting. Plus you could use the same site for different trends, by creating a new page for each trend. If you do this, make sure you buy a generic domain, as you will be working with different kinds of trends and CPA offers.

On this site(page), create a simple poll about the trend with a yes or no answer option, where both yes and no link to your CPA offer. So, no matter which button they click, they will be redirected to the CPA offer you are promoting. Don’t make your poll too complicated, make it simple and quick. In our case, it could be something like:

You could also use your articles instead of polls and simply place a link to the CPA offer (You can not do that on article directories, because most of them do not allow affiliate links).

Write a few articles

If you knwo about the subject (in our case apple ipod), Write a few articles about the trend you picked. In our case, its the apple ipod. You could write about its history, its usefulness and why people should have one and etc. These articles will have to link to your site you built earlier where you have a link to the CPA offer you plan to promote.

If you don’t know much about the subject, simply do some research online. A simple and quick way to learn the important things about the trend is to search for it on Google and find articles written about it. Read those articles and rewrite them in your own words. I am not advocating you copy-paste other people’s articles. Please do not copy and paste articles. That is considered plagiarism and is punishable by law, plus its not ethical. Instead, use them as a guide to write your articles.

Submit article to article directories

To get exposure, you need to submit your articles to article directories. However, many article directories take a few days to approve your articles and since Google trends usually last for only a few days or so, by the time your article gets published, the trend would’ve died down. So, you need to submit to article directories that approve articles instantly or within 24 hours or so, like AssociatedContent.com.

Promote you site

The only thing left to do is… well, promoting your site in anyway you can. Remember, trends die quickly, so don’t waste your time with long time SEO methods, instead use methods that give quick results, such as tweeting, social bookmarking and etc. The more traffic you get, the more money you can make.

This method allows anyone to make money online with a little work. Timing is very crucial with Google trends. You have to get it right to succeed. However, be prepared for setbacks and failures. You may fail to make money on your first few tries and you will not make money on each and every trend you work on. Don’t give up! You will perfect it as you go along. You will lean how to time it just right and how to spend the least amount of time on each trend, while making the most amount of money from it.

Is it Possible to Success In Google Without Link Building?

For years and years I have read about failed link-building attempts when someone has acquired too many, too fast or some other reason because that person has been told the only way to get better rankings in Google is to continually build more links.

I've watched Google videos, I've read about it, I've seen recommendations however I have never in 16+ years not once asked anyone for a link, I couldn't even tell you what my PR is on any site, I've never once bothered to look yet some seem to refer to it as the Holy Grail.

I certainly have plenty of spammy competing sites in my widget sector yet I concentrate in delivering on my sites what I as a tradesperson would expect to find and for an educated retail buyer that essential information that they need to know.

Am I the only one who works this way?

It's common sense to know how to raise your eCPM.

#1: Showing ads with high click values. (more money)
#2: Having visitors that will click ads and purchase products. (less SmartPricing)
#3: Not having a lot of competition on the topic. (more visitors)

#3 is why no one will help you...why create more competition?

Having all three is just about impossible. I chose to dominate #3 and make considerable money. It all depends on what you're shooting for, you can make a lot of money with a few clicks, or a little bit of money with a lot of clicks. Sorry to say but because of keyword research it's near impossible to make a site with lots of visitors paying off huge click values, that market has been attacked by everyone.

With the same set of keywords, it is possible to yield the optimized value of Cost-per-click (CPC)?

E.g.

CPC 1US => max. 400 clicks per day
CPC 0.5US => max. 300 clicks per day
CPC 0.2US => max. 200 clicks per day
CPC 0.1US => max. 100 clicks per day

If my target clicks is only 200, definably I will be bidding at CPC 0.2US, not 1US.

Our site used to rank very well for some relatively competitive terms, until we were suddenly removed from SERPS for those keywords. This took place about 4.5 months ago.

The biggest suspect at this point in time is the fact that we purchased some paid links whose contexts were not all that related to our business. As a result there were a few periods where unnatural link growth was picked up..

Either way, what I would like to know is if anyone else out there has experienced a penalty like this. What is the best way to move forward and gain back decent organic rankings? What sorts of time periods are involved?

Advice

# One fix that I know worked involved:

1) stop paying for links
2) come totally clean in a Reconsideration Request
3) then wait it out

Recovery took nearly three months after the request, in this case. Forgiveness was not instantaneous

#sometimes it just easier & faster to start with a brand new domain. i don't know how much legitimate backlinks you have developed. if you have a good amount then it probably makes sense to wait it out. if almost all of your links were paid links then just restart a new domain. while you are at start a third domain for when your second spammy domain gets killed.

if you want to salvage your existing domain, then you need to double down your marketing efforts. launch great tools to attract people and increase the time they spend on your site. give away content, prizes, tools whatever to related websites in exchange for quality relevant links. launch a twitter account that provide great info everyday. establish an email newsletter with real value. this will help boost the importance of your website and also create new traffic streams for you so you wont be 100% dependent on google.

Networks Blocking Shows On Google TV

ABC, CBS and NBC are blocking TV programming on their websites from being viewable on Google Inc.'s new Web-TV service, exposing the rift that remains between the technology giant and some of the media companies it wants to supply content for its new products.

Spokespeople for the three networks confirmed that they are blocking the episodes on their websites from playing on Google TV, although both ABC and NBC allow promotional clips to work using the service. ABC is owned by Walt Disney Co., CBS is part of CBS Corp., and NBC is a unit of General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal.

"Google TV enables access to all the Web content you already get today on your phone and PC, but it is ultimately the content owners' choice to restrict their fans from accessing their content on the platform," a Google spokeswoman said in a statement.
