Wake up! Wake up! The Party's over ...

That pretty much sums up what happened to me Thursday morning. I am not a fast starter. I often stay in bed and use my phone to read my RSS feeds. One section is pretty negative: The people who blog about SL as a platform. I don't read it a lot.

Thursday morning I did. It was a lot of the usual.

Some pointed out that Linden Lab is woefully unaware of what to expect from hard core users and how to make them happy. On purpose, by decision. This, of course, does not jive with their new found interest in creating hard core users. Some feel that Rod Humble's latest yadda yadda, pretending to ask for help from the hard core, is just a ploy. After all, we've only been telling them for all these years. There are volumes of back data they can read.

Some pointed to something that happens to even the best of users. One fine day everything you ever worked for or created is deleted and / or you're suddenly blocked from it, etc. It might be a technical glitch. It might involve a vicious vendetta from another user. It might involve a vicious vendetta from a Linden employee (always denied). It might involve some sort of payment confusion. It doesn't matter the cause. Linden Lab doesn't really care. Yes. This is not news. Absolutely true. We all know at least one story.

And Linden Lab does not appreciate the volunteered hours and help of many. They did away with the volunteer mentor program. I can tell you my contact with a mentor served me very well early on and throughout the years. It actually led one thing to another to us having Adelebsen Isle. Mentors equal hard core users.

Reading the article by Fleep Tuque about why SLCC 2012 was canceled was just chilling ... and yet ... no surprise at all. Click here. It's all so True. Including the part about the attendees.

So, to be realistic, the writers and their complaining commenters usually have reasons for their behavior. Still, I tend to take them with a grain of salt. ... em that means I dilute the flavor of their message.

But Thursday morning's reading were stacking realities on top of realities. I've been weighing out option after option about our Adelebsen sim, it's mall, and my own artistic wants and desires.

Wednesday, I had pinpointed a few things I felt I could safely change that might improve things for the mall. I knew I had to work within the glitches of search and a land bug I had uncovered. But maybe things would be okay ...

Instead, I lost three hours of time to graphics card glitches with the latest LL viewer, writing up an explanation on the forum to correct misinformation and bad attitudes of certain know-it-alls that hang out there ... and add a comment to the jira ... and go back and reinstall an older viewer.

So why not just switch to Firestorm? Well. I'm still Emeraldgate jaded ... AND ... Wednesday evening a friend asked me to do a three minute permissions check of an item he was about to put out for sale. OMG!! ... we both lost two more hours and ultimately discovered there's a massive permissions issue between Firestorm and LL's viewer. By this time, I was so fed up that I didn't even look for a jira or check with any group to see if they knew anything. Whatever you do, do not set your permissions using Firestorm.

So, back to Thursday morning. All of these issues from other sources are stacking up on top of what I already know about my own situation and then ....

I read the statement that was the final thing shaking me from my art and community addiction-induced slumber: "hard core users spend somewhere between $3000 to $5000 USD per year."

!!? What ?!! Wait!!!

Yes. Guilty!

It was definitely time to re-examine my options!

I ran for my hard-core addiction machine ... yes, my desktop computer.

I logged into the InWorldz grid with my avie that's been unused there for almost two years. I logged into the sim of a friend, Boaz Sands. She won the bidding war for one of the 2011 Fantasy Faire sims (RFL). The really short version is: Collaboration happened and this is the result ... Dreams, InWorldz.

It was a beautiful and refreshing thing to log into.

I have a lot more confidence as a builder these days but I have critical needs: Quality textures and sculptie kits. I went exploring. Hooray! They are in InWorldz now.

And more! Some old supportive friends are there, too !!

So. The money. The bang for the buck?

Let's be real. Every grid has bad days. Every grid has issues. Every grid has things you have to work around. ... So ... I can pay $10/day to deal with issues OR I can pay $2.50/day.

I can have just 15,000 prims to work with OR I can have up to 45,000 prims to work with.

So Mitch and I talked some more. One reason he's so wanted me to hang on to the sim is that we've both had some interesting ideas for projects.

But on each project discussion we've asked, "How can we support this with the mall?" (Not enough prims) and/or we have asked, "How can we support this without a mall?" (Not enough money) Obviously, the pricing and prim allotments at InWorldz ends these quandaries.

We've held on for so long, through so much uncertainty, with the help of so many friends -- letting go of Adelebsen Isle just seems like the wrong ending to the story.

But I've reached the point where I feel like I'm hanging on to the edge of a cliff by my fingers and, no matter what I might see as an option for survival, LL is stomping on my fingers. It's painful. It's paralyzing.

That part we can change.

We are letting go.

The plan: We will have an InWorldz sim by August 10th. The last day for Adelebsen Isle is August 19th.

We are not closing our SL accounts. SL has just become a very useful secondary tool for improving our InWorldz experience. There are some in-world tools that we have in our SL inventory that we will be in SL to use ... and that sort of thing. And things I make there, I may also sell in SL. So, we will be in from time to time.

As far as visiting friends goes, we'll let you know where to find our InWorldz sim. Most of you already have accounts there.

Where to start? Wow time has traveled fast. It's almost been a year since we had our first scare with financing Adelebsen Isle because of a reduction in income. Then Mitch lost his job and we were sure we were giving up Adelebsen. And then an anonymous donor stepped forward and paid for a substantial amount of tier expense. That gift, plus the gifts from friends and visitors of Adelebsen (Romantic Dance Mountain), and the shop rentals all kept Adelebsen afloat until Mitch got a new job with the old company, 900 miles from home. Yes, we moved in RL.

Our current plans for Adelebsen ...

First, I think we shall go with the nickname of Adel ... and, by the way, Adel means Nobel in German. Start looking for it in the names of places and things around here :)

Second, We still very much depend on your donations and the support that you give the Adel Merchants by making purchases from them (so they want to stay and pay rent.)

Above all, we *are* moving forward as if everything will be okay. I am looking forward to many more conversations with you all ... oh and I'm looking forward to being in world more :)

Okay, so Wednesday was rather disturbing. Billy (aka Mitch) went off to work and then called me with the news way too many are hearing these days. So, yeah. He was laid off effective Friday (today). No severence. Some supplemental pay on top of unemployment for a limited time, though.

Now, I'm telling you this right here and right now. God has seen us through much worse. We have an amazing feeling of calm. We do feel irritated but not panicked. In fact the Blessing Ride has already started. Come on and follow along.

Anyone who knows Billy in Real Life, and a great many who have dealt with him in Second Life, will tell you quick: He's a good man. A very good man.

Seems his former bosses who have gone on to other departments and others who have worked with him are of the same opinion. They went to bat for him. So, the efffective date is now November 23rd.

Billy's lay off is the reason behind our decision to close Adelebsen Isle. Dealing with stress of whether or not the sim visitors could/ would donate enough was not something we wanted on the plate with everything else.

So but you remember I said "barring some surprise." Well last night we coming home on the train and got a Skype text from one of our Second Life friends. "I want to sponsor the sim for three months."

So ... this support plus the shops will keep the sim open :)

This morning my husband informed me that the Zombie Apocalypse has been happening for quite some time and that he is in fact one of the Zombies.
He leaves home "normal," stops and picks up coffee, gets back into the car, turns on his tunes, and then drives in to work as a Zombie. He says there's lots and lots of people like him.
AND they drive home as Zombies, too. Some return to their normal selves completely upon reaching their own home. Some only regain the appearance of "normal" while retaining the internal Zombie state in front of some type of entertainment device (TV, Video game, Computer, etc etc etc).
So, be on the look out.
What I didn't tell him: I have a Zombie time, too.

What is a Tiny?

A Tiny is a fun loving, critter. Most of the avatars start with a Wynx or a Flights of Fantasy avatar. There are many designers of Tiny avatars but in general, the fashion industry in SL are focused on dressing the avatars from these two creators.

Almost every Tiny Avatar comes with a HUD for special movements, sounds, and sits.

Before you change into a Tiny, save your current appearance. This is very easy with Viewer 2 and above. Then choose to wear all the parts of the avatar. It will shrink the big avatar frame down to Tiny Size so that the pieces all fit together well. Be sure to save your Tiny look, also.

There's much more I want to add here ... like a real list of the creators ... but today I am running on limited resources.

Over 12 inches snow. no power. no internet. intermittent low cell signal. Solution: generator + marine battery + Wilson Cellular (ty Billy -husband) + Verizon droid (ty Matthew -son). Results: steady 3g signal. tethered to netbook. able to research further survival techniques. Hooray! Yes. warm enough so far :~) [update Oct 31] We now have power and fairly good cell signal. Still no Internet. So, still using the cell, the netbook, and the signal booster (just for a little extra)

An Update on Adelebsen Isle

A bit of info about the sim and about us, too.

When we haven't been focused on our own flood alerts, Billy aka Mitch has been actively involved in supporting the NY SBDR Kitchen. (New York Southern Baptist Disaster Relief) He may go back out for another 7 days some time soon. I've either been packing or repacking us for evacuation or making sure he has everything to go to the kitchen site. This last week I've had a sinus infection / cold.

The home we rent did not receive any flood damage. We're going to have to spend some time soon cleaning up the back yard a bit. We really were impacted very lightly.

In short. We're mainly kind of tired.

So, a little of this and a little of that has been happening with the sim. We've not gotten to communicate the way we would like ... and so on ... So, it's no great surprise that the coins have been dropping rather randomly into the fountains.

All the same, coins have been dropping into the fountains :) and we really appreciate all of you who do contribute. We have learned a lot about the people who love Adelebsen Isle. One thing I've noticed is that some of you come by and drop in a few Lindens every couple of days.

So. Yes. We're staying another month and your help is hugely encouraging and enabling.

There's been a few questions:

Can I give less than the $L 500? Yes :) absolutely.

Can I give you all the Lindens I have? Umm well that's not expected ... but if you're really serious, it looks like we're going to need them much more next month. Thank you very much :)

How much is $L 500 in USD? It's about $2 USD. So roughly, every $L 25 equals one dime. And we all know dimes do add up.

What is that great huge massive thing hanging over the castle? Well? Another castle? The new building blocks from LL are too fun to leave alone and I have these ideas going through my head .... stay tuned :)

Why is the Adel Forest all broken up? Well, it's another project in the works. As I told our sim guard, "Hide in the forest and watch."

It's also time for Autumn to sneak in ::happy dance::

Precisely what we need

During August, September, and October we need 75 people to donate $L 500 by the 14th of each month. That's it. It's roughly half of Adelebsen Isle's cost to us.
In the last 12 hours, with only a few knowing, we have already received 10 of those donations. So, for August, we only need 65 additional donations ... in 7 days. Anything we receive beyond this amount will roll toward next month's tier fees.

Why we need your help

For the past year Mitchmiester and I have been gradually absorbing more and more of the cost of Adelebsen Isle. All the while I've been collecting ideas to redesign and improve certain areas. And, we've all been waiting on LL to get their act together. And, we've all been eyeing the RL economy with some concern.

Well in a classic case of irony, just when LL gets search functioning quite a bit and just when the new "up to 64sq meter prims" and mesh are moving onto the grid, just when I'm starting to get really excited about some of the re-do designs ... our personal RL economy got clipped. Mitch is being required to take some time off from work without receiving RL pay O.O

This doesn't threaten our RL living arrangements but it does threaten other things that are really important to us. Yes, some of RL does matter more than getting to hang onto a sim in Second Life.

However ....

I've always been a bit peeved when sims have just up and disappear without one word of honesty to their fans and customers -- without giving their group a chance to step up and maybe make a difference. Today, I understand why they do it. Asking for help is a scarey sort of thing. Asking for help can reveal that no one actually cares ... or that there's no one left or ...

OR ...

It can prove that friendships and relationships and just the enjoyment of an atmosphere in Second Life really does matter ... people really do want to make a difference.

So, Therefore ...

Since we are not entering into a long term financial crunch ...
Since we do believe that LL is beginning to do some things that may make it possible to begin to support the Adelebsen Isle again ...
and Since we ourselves do want to continue,
We've decided to take the route of asking our friends and fans for the next three months to contribute to cost of keeping Adelebsen Isle.

About our shopkeepers

Our shopkeepers are absolutely the most loyal and amazing friends. Most have been with us for at least 2 years. Many have been with us from the beginning. Much to my shock many have already contributed to this month's goal.

So Please ...

If you are making a decision between supporting the sim or buying something from one of the shopkeepers, please buy something from them. If you would rather support us by becoming a shopkeeper, please talk to me.

What's in it for you ...

It's right that you should become more privledged in some way. We are considering that. Right this second, the thing that's in it for you is getting to visit the sim in Ausgust, September, and October. Beyond August 14th, it's a mystery :)

Accountability

We are keeping track of all donations. If for some reason we fall short of the goal, we will return all donations. Also, since we are receiving donations, we will continue with our redesign goals and other plans that may bring in additional funds. AND, if we do let go, our shopkeepers will be refunded any days left on their meters.

Blushing Petals gets a Second Look

Do you remember the "Blushing Petals" art that I created and Boaz Sands created an outfit from the texture ... and then I brought the texture in world to display it on a prim and the art got very demanding and wanted to be translucent and iridescent, and more?

Well, when it finished being demanding with me, it turned on Boaz and started insisting on a second version of the "Blushing Petals" outfit: Elegant, with ribbons. Then it started screaming for jewelry.

So... Boaz did what any good artist would do with a piece of demanding art. She got busy and created exactly what it was telling her to make.

You probably totally love the first outfit Boaz made from the Blushing Petals image because it is a fun and flitty fairy outfit.

Don't be surprised to find yourself equally in love with Blushing Petals ii for entirely different reasons. It is elegant with a gentle flowing movement while the playful ribbons keep it from being too serious.

Last time I didn't go on and on about Boaz's garment construction, but there are some things you should know. First, the dress flows just right. They always do. And, as always, this one flows just right and takes advantage of the alpha error (transparency). This makes it appear that the petal edges are floating back and forth over each other, rather like waves.

For those of you who are a little geeky, I will add that none of these photos were taken with "fast alpha."

Second, Boaz makes sure that the petals are arranged in a way so that the transparency in the back never makes the front disappear ... I'm sure you've all had at least one garment that does that.

The dress is just as graceful from the back :) I don't know if you'll see it but I enjoy that the sleeves and the side belt ties keep giving me the allusion of a silken wrap.

The jewelry, belt, and sleeves add just the right architectural detail. Boaz made the necklace, earrings, and belt from ribbons. She added beads to the belt that utilize a portion of the Blushing Petals art that you would not otherwise enjoy.

I contributed the medallion to the necklace. It occasionally emits a drop of magic ~ much more slowly than the original art piece. You can also get the jewelry with the original fairy costume.

Madsion Winthorpe of Madison's Creations has a new shop on Adelebsen Isle. The shop is a new larger building design, making it even easier for you to shop for medieval gowns, accessories and men's clothing.

Madison also has a new dress release, Bree:
"Since it's spring now, I have created a gown that exudes the warm, fuzzy feelings of the season.

Bree is fun-loving, and enjoys all that nature has to offer. She has a bit of a tough side, but still maintains that sweet tranquility in her character.

Boaz Sands and MarillaAnne Slade at Fantasy Faire RFL Second Life

It is incredible fun working with Boaz. She's an encouraging person who is more than willing to hold me to task. She has brilliant ideas and always has this attitude:
"Now, I know this is possible. We just need to think ..."
It shows in every new dress she makes. When you wear her outfits, you know it. :) I see you nodding!

So let me tell you the story and show you the first results of our collaboration. As always the photos will not do justice! When you click on the photos, it will open a larger image and, also, map you to the location.

Have you ever created something just for the fun of creating and then found out that other people like it and they think you should try to sell it? For me, this is a panic inducing moment that happens often.

The story for this particular set of art starts about a year ago. I discovered a way to mechanically doodle. It is fascinating to me because I've never been able to just doodle up little squiggly lines that I liked. Allowing mathematics to do the line calculations based on where I moved my mouse -- now that was fascinating ... and beautiful.

Sooo I started making them more "artsy fartsy" ... added a few layers of this and blended a few layers of that and pushed and pulled at the designs. And then RL interrupted with a move and then a computer reload and ...

Well, you know how it works with time and motivation. The more time passes the less motivation exists. Besides, who would really like my art besides me?

Then one day Boaz Sands and I were talking about using art to make digital clothing ... and I confessed that I had a stash of almost completed designs. I got over my nerves and showed them to her. Boaz immediately saw fairy outfits. I was pleased and surprised by how quickly she knew exactly what she would do. So we hatched a plan.

Then Boaz realized Fantasy Faire Race for Life was looming close on the calendar. We decided to go for it. I passed the image "Blushing Petals" and a few ideas over to Boaz and then I was suppose to bring the "Blushing Petals" art into Second Life.

But ... first ... So, have you ever had an idea for a project and then found other really important things that needed to be done instead?

I went on to deal with some other things ... Like completing the greening of Adelebsen Isle (spring time!) and shooting RachelLynn Lane. Okay okay, I only shot her with the camera to capture her poses for the "Blushing Petals" purple outfit.

The outfit flits and floats in a very flirty fae fashion :) The location of the photo shoot is the Adel Forest Garden on Adelebsen Isle.

Why, yes. You are correct. Boaz was ahead of me in the project. So, then it's do or die, put up or shut up. Right?

Have you ever had your creation become demanding? You head off one way with a plan but right in front of your eyes it refuses and heads off in a direction you had not really considered. Yes? Me too!

I imported the art into Second Life. I put it on the prim. Then "Blushing Petals" became a demanding spoiled brat! Honestly! It said the following:

I need to be iridescent
I need to be translucent
I need to have depth
I need to express movement
I need to be Alive!

"Blushing Petals" was also very insistent that I remember all the encouragement I had needed to get this far. It brought to mind all the people who had loved it already. It insisted that I remember what a chicken I am and how much it took for me to get this far with it.

In short, it was kind of like having a parental unit "review" all the things that you really do have to be thankful for and therefore it's time to be more productive, etc ...

You will not believe what happened next. "Blushing Petals" double dared me to create a one of a kind to put into the Fantasy Faire RFL Auction. And so, again with Boaz' swift shove to the shoulders, I did it.

And in the mean time ... Boaz whipped up a version of the outfit inspired by both my original "Blushing Petals" art and by Pantone's color of the year: Honeysuckle. Which is described by Pantone as

and who can argue with Pantone about color?

So there you have it. A bunch of firsts. It has been a great deal of fun to this point and we can't wait to get started on the next piece.

Boaz Sands at Fantasy Faire RFL in Second Life

I've been talking with Boaz Sands about her Fantasy Faire plans for a few weeks -- mainly because we've been working on another project together. And then the roads merged ... but more on that later.

Watching Boaz work her fairy magic to bring outfits to life has been great fun. So let me tell you the stories.

One day Boaz was walking in the forest and spotted a frog. It reminded her of dart frogs who had once been her pets. To honor them and their lifestyle, she collected some lily pads and created some magical color blends and added them to a fabric with just the right sheen. See!

And of course she made a version for Race for Life

But there was a dilemma, a quandry ... Boaz wanted one more outfit for RFL donations. She looked around her fairy seamstress workshop and thought about her friends' favorites and in an instant she knew! It was inevitable, someone was going to ask for a spring version anyway. So! Wa-La! "Spring Maiden" made of a lush fabric and accented with dainty roses.

AND THEN .... came a wild challenge which deserves an entry of it's own. I'll update this entry with a link shortly.
