Acupressure is an alternative medical therapy that has gained in popularity in the last few years simply because it is very effective.

Acupressure is a non-invasive technique, in which the practitioner only uses his fingers, his thumbs, and occasionally his elbow to put pressure on certain parts of the body for the purpose of relieving pain by releasing Qi (pronounced “chee”).

Acupressure is closely associated with Eastern medical disciplines like acupuncture and Shiatsu.

Acupressure is used to treat such human ailments as back pain, headache, fatigue, anxiety, stress and tension, feelings of melancholy, and immune system deficiencies. But it is not used to treat such problems as open wounds, scar tissue, varicose veins, or areas of inflammation and swelling.

The basic idea of Acupressure is to restore the balance of Qi to the body by either blocking or calming it at certain very specific points.

According to those who practice acupressure, there are 12 channels in the body, and each channel has 365 points. Additionally, there are 650 individual pressure points.

Pregnant women should never seek relief for the back pain associated with pregnancy from a person who practices acupressure. There are specific pressure points that can cause miscarriage.

When people are suffering from back pain, the one thing that they want more than anything else is relief. And they want that relief sooner rather than later.

Modern Western medicine has lagged behind in the ability to relieve back pain. Disciplines such as acupuncture, shiatsu, and acupressure address the problem of back pain and do something about it.

Usually people will first consult their medical doctors when they have back pain. They don’t usually move on to the alternate medicine until they have exhausted the relief provided by their doctors.

However, once a patient discovers that relief can be obtained quickly and painlessly by some alternative medicines, the next time they have a backache, they use the alternative options first rather than last.

Acupressure is a traditional Chinese technique based on the same principles as acupuncture.

Unlike acupuncture, that uses needles to achieve response, acupressure uses gentle but firm physical pressure exerted by hand, elbow, and foot or with the aid of different devices.

Pressure is applied to different acupuncture points found on the human body surface to achieve the desired remedial effect. Many East Asian martial arts extensively use this technique to incapacitate their opponents.

As per the historians acupressure is older than acupuncture, but acupressure lost popularity with the advent of acupuncture. Still it continues to be most effective method for the treatment of tension related ailments and pain.

While we talk of acupressure and acupuncture we continuously refer to the traditional Chinese principles of acupressure or acupuncture points. The traditional Chinese principles treat the human body as a whole; it represents various jiaos or levels of the ventral body cavity.

Any disease is taken as a loss of balance between the yin and yang energies and treatment of disease is attempted by modifying the activity of one or more systems of function. Chinese principle holds that acupuncture or acupressure works by normalizing the free flow of qi (vital energy), blood and body fluids (jin ye) throughout the body.

Pain is treated by correcting the local or systemic upsurge or insufficiency. Pain is considered to indicate blockage or stagnation of the flow of qi, blood and/or fluids, the delicate balance between qi and blood is of primary concern in Chinese principle, hence the saying blood is the mother of qi, and qi is the controller of blood. Both qi and blood work together to move and to nourish the body fluids.

Acupressure or acupuncture points are located along several layers of pathways, most commonly the twelve primary pathways or meridians, located throughout the body. Beside that other pathways are the eight unusual Pathways Qi Jing Ba Mai, Luo Vessels, the Divergent and the Sinew Channels.

Ten of the primary pathways are named after organs of the body, eleventh pathway is named for the membrane that wraps the heart, the last pathway is the ‘three spaces’ (San Jiao). The twelve primary pathways run vertically, bilaterally, and symmetrically and every channel corresponds to and connects internally with one of the twelve organs.

There are six yin and six yang channels in all. Out of these, three yin and three yang channels are present on each arm, and three yin and three yang on each leg.

All the acupuncture points of a channel lie on its external pathway. The internal pathways are the deep path of the channel where it enters the body cavities and related organs. The external pathways of the twelve channels depict three complete circuits of the body, chest to hands, hands to head, head to feet, feet to chest, etc.

There are some electronic devices now available which will make a noise when the correct acupressure/acupuncture point is pressed. As soon as a point is pressed, the muscle tension give way to the pressure, enabling the muscle fibers to stretch and relax, blood to flow freely, and toxins to be released and eliminated.

Increased circulation also brings in more oxygen and other nutrients to the affected area. This increases the body’s resistance to illness and promotes a longer, healthier, more vital life. When the blood and bioelectrical energy circulate properly, we have a greater sense of harmony, health, and well-being.

The acupressure expert decides which points to treat by observing and questioning the patient in order to make a diagnosis according to the tradition. There are four diagnostic methods: inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiring, and palpation.

The whole process I relatively pain free. After prolonged finger pressure is applied directly on the pressure point; gradual, steady, penetrating pressure for approximately three minutes on the affected point is ideal. A general guideline is that the pressure should be firm enough so that it hurts between pleasant, firm pressure and outright pain.

The middle finger is the longest and strongest of the fingers and is best suited for applying acupressure. The thumb is strong, too, but often lacks sensitivity. The knuckles or fist or other tools can be used according to specific requirements.

The rule of thumb is to apply slow, firm pressure on the point at a 90 degree angle from the surface of the skin. It’s important to apply and release finger pressure gradually because this allows the tissues time to respond, promoting healing.

After repeated acupressure sessions using different degrees of pressure, the patient will begin to feel a pulse at the point. This pulsation is a good sign, it means that circulation has increased in the affected area. Each body and each area of the body requires a different amount of pressure.

At present different kinds of acupressure are being practiced. The same age-old pressure points are used in all of them to date. Varying rhythms, pressures and techniques create different styles of acupressure. Shiatsu, for instance, the most well-known style of acupressure, can be quite vigorous, with firm pressure applied to each point for only three to five seconds.

Another kind of acupressure gently holds each point for a minute or more. Pressing with an intermittent, fast beat is stimulating; a slower pressure creates a deeply relaxing effect on the body.

Slow motion kneading uses the thumbs and fingers along with the heels of the hands to squeeze large muscle groups firmly. This motion is similar to that of kneading a large mass of dough. This relieves general stiffness, shoulder and neck tension, constipation, and spasms in the calf muscles.

Brisk rubbing uses friction to stimulate the blood and lymph. The skin is rubbed lightly to relieve chilling, swelling, and numbness by increasing circulation, as well as to benefit the nerves and tone of the skin.

Quick tapping with fingertips stimulates muscles on unprotected, tender areas of the body such as the face. For larger areas of the body, such as the back or buttocks, loose fist is used. This can improve the functioning of nerves and sluggish muscles in the area.

Acupressure can be very effective in helping relieve headaches, eyestrain, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, and tension due to stress. It also relieves ulcer pain, menstrual cramps, lower back aches, constipation, indigestion, anxiety and helps you get to sleep at night. The best part of acupressure is - there is no side effect as no drugs or medications are being used.

Menstrual pain is something almost all women are very familiar with. Mood swings, bloating, cramping, are typical symptoms of menstrual discomfort. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and can seriously impact a womans life.

Many women resort to over the counter medications to find relief however, a better resource may bring better relief. Aside from the warm baths or compresses and herbal remedies there are other alternatives.

Studies have been done in Germany, that show that acupuncture may offer a valid alternative to medication and other remedies.

Acupuncture is a procedure from ancient Chinese Medicine, where specific body areas are pierced with fine needles for therapeutic purposes to relieve pain or produce regional anesthesia. It is believed that the body has energy fields that can be pierced with the needles and so cause healing and wellness.

The needles are said to stimulate nerve endings that then link to the pain source and then are redirected to dissipate the pain. It is one of many alternative medicine routes you can take if you want to avoid the traditional method of medical doctors and medications for pain relief.

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years in China and is believed to bring the body into harmony of body and mind. Western medicine has a long way to go to understanding the body-mind interconnectedness that is prevalent in Eastern medicine.

Western medicine concentrates more on the symptoms and treating of symptoms where Eastern medicine attempts to get to the origin of the problem and resolve it first in the mind so the body will follow in its healing.

New research conducted at Charite University Medical Center in Berlin, studied 201 women who agreed to receive acupuncture or no treatment for their menstrual symptoms.

After 3 months, and 10 acupuncture sessions, 63% of the women who received the acupuncture treatments reported 33% improvement of their symptoms. The control group who did not receive treatment showed only 23% improvement of their symptoms.

Researchers concluded that acupuncture can offer benefits to women suffering from menstrual discomfort. For women who feel they have tried everything to deal with their menstrual problems, acupuncture could be just the difference that helps change their symptoms.

Let’s start off with the fact that it is one of the ancient methodologies for over 5,000 years; it is a primary health care function in China. It is used extensively and I mean that anything can be addressed with acupuncture.

A variety of medical purposes start with prevention and treating to relieving pain or getting patients ready for surgery.

Its main thing is on prevention but once something does happen to you, like a broken bone, things in combination with it can help you heal better. Muscles that has atrophied and that have started to exercise again there are various layouts that they use to gain their potency back.

How is it that they do this?

They use the chakra system that exists in each human being. There are seven main ones. It starts at the top of the head and goes to the groin area. Then if you look at the arms and the hands and the elbows and the shoulders that is a nerve juncture, look at the body, hips, knees and feet, the hands and the feet have pressure points on them for every organ in the body, every function in the body can be found there. The needles would then go in there.

Throughout the body are lines called meridians, let’s say that you were an electrician and you ran a line and made a join an then you made two or three off of that junction that would be called a meridian. Where those meridians are, and in various combinations, is where you would stick the needle. And it will be painless.

The only time when you may feel something is when there is an imbalance in the body in the specific meridian. The pain and the pressure that you are feeling is the pressure being released and normalcy being replaced. No pain, no gain and when the needle goes in and you feel the pressure the pain is being released.

You can use it for diet or weight control, either gaining or losing weight, repairing vision or hearing, stopping smoking, getting off drugs, it can be used to treat alcoholism and your body is a map and you can take an addicted person and there is something that is missing in their makeup that makes them need this and you can take this and override their own flight or fight mode even to overeat.

This is just a brief overview of some of the ways acupuncture works and some of the maladies that can be treated with it. Acupuncture is one of the most under used of all the holistic health methods.

Scientist at the University of Adelaide in Australia conducted studies through the application of a mild electrical pulse in order to stimulate an acupressure point on the wrist known as the Neiguan or Pericardium 6 - P6.

This acupressure point is linked to upper gastrointestinal conditions such as acid reflux. The stimulation of the acupoint resulted in the reduction of relaxations of the lower esophageal sphincter - LES. The relaxation of the LES is known to be the major cause of acid reflux syndrome.

The acupoint stimulation reduced transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxations - TLESRs, by a significant 40%, from 6 per hour, to 2 and per hour. This reduction was also noted as being significantly higher than the results witnessed in the placebo group, whose members received just a mock stimulation on the hip.

Acupressure is a branch of Chinese traditional medicine whereby, pressure is applied by hand to the same acupoints, as those in which needles would be inserted during acupuncture treatments. Electrical acupoint stimulation is a high-tech version of the traditional procedure of acupuncture.

Through the application of pressure to acupoints prescribed by ancient Chinese charts, specific areas and organs of the body may be effectively treatment of ailments using the energy of the meridian system known as Yin. In the process, Yang and Qi are brought into alignment, thereby allowing the body to heal itself.

The acupoint stimulation used in the above study was a modern version of ancient Chinese procedure, whose needles were replaced by electrodes that were used to send small electrical pulses to specific acupuncture points on the skin.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, these points are connected to the internal pathways which conduct energy throughout the body. It is through the stimulation of these points that a healthy flow of (energy) is achieved.

You may also apply pressure to the P6 using your fingers. Acupoints are normally located beside and in between bones, tendons and ligaments. They are however, not found on bones, blood vessels or arteries, but instead in the depressions beside or between them.

For years, acupressure to the P6 has been used in the treatment of vomiting, nausea, motion sickness, sea sickness, morning sickness, as well as post-op nausea. This traditional Chinese remedy has also been used in the remedy of insomnia, fever, epilepsy, chest pain and migraines. Acupressure wrist bands, also referred to as “sea bands” are today being used for this very purpose.

The acupressure wrist band is designed to fit snugly onto the wrist, and has a small plastic button which is pressed in order to apply pressure to the P6. It is widely believed that these acupressure wrist bands may be instrumental in the reduction of acid reflux.

Many people have used or are looking into using acupressure migraine headache relief techniques to relieve severe pain experience from this awful condition.

Severe headaches and migraines can be so painful and often have a very large and negative impact on people’s lives, so finding a method to cure or relieve this painful condition is higher in many people’s agenda.

Acupressure, not to be confused with acupuncture, has been used in many cultures and societies for, it is believed thousands of years. Detailed records do date back as far as 800 years ago in China.

But do these methods really work?

Actually a lot of the methods are very effective. Not because they use some magical energy that flows through your body, but because the simple massage techniques have a positive impact on your health and body.

For example there is one technique where you can massage a point on your body called the GB20 or more traditionally ‘The Gates of Consciousness’. This all sounds very magical but it is in fact a point about 1 inch below the base of the skull either side of the spine. During a migraine if you massage this point with your fingers or thumb it can relieve tension and begin to relieve the pain of the migraine.

This works effectively because it is often muscular tension at this point at the base of the skull that is the direct cause of the migraine itself. Massaging will relax the muscles and release the tension therefore curing the migraine.

So does acupressure migraine headache relief really work? Yes, but not because of some weird and wonderful images we have when they think of acupressure. But because of the direct and effective benefits that acupressure massage can have on tight and tense muscles.

If you need more home remedies quickly for your migraine, visit here: http://www.migraine-free.info

The techniques revealed here are so effective they come with a complete guarantee.

Most physical and psychological complaints are better treated by going to a qualified physician; however, alternative medicines or treatments can greatly aid in making these conditions better.

As a matter of fact, alternative treatments, such as the shiatsu massage, are becoming well-trusted and relied on by many people. Even celebrities and Hollywood individuals go to alternative doctors, therapists, and practitioners to improve their overall well being.

Shiatsu massage is just one of these applications that people actually rely on to bring improved overall health and uplifted spiritual condition. So, if you are suffering from physical and psychological complaints, shiatsu massage therapy can very well help improve your condition.

It does not totally treat but alleviate some body disorders like anxiety, depression, stress, stiffness, nausea, cramps, pulled muscles, cramps, and headaches. The shiatsu massage therapy is believed to help a lot by applying pressure points to the affected parts of the body.

Shiatsu massage is a form of Chinese acupressure method but actually has meaning of “shi,” which means finger, and “atsu,” which means pressure, from the Japanese language. It is sometimes referred to as the Zen shiatsu. By the philosophy of balancing energy, it unites philosophical, medical, and spiritual levels of the body.

The Popular Zen Shiatsu

The Zen shiatsu has become very popular that in the Western countries, massage techniques have evolved combining them with the philosophy that the energy, also called “chi” or “qi,” is circulating along the passage channels, called meridians. If the energy is freely flowing along these meridians, it brings strong energy so that it fetches wasted energy away together with the body toxins.

But then, it is inevitable that this chi becomes diverted or blocked so that it upsets the natural balance of energy, or the Yin and Yang, causing your body to become physically and psychologically affected too. In order to free it with this negative condition, the blocked meridians must be cleared and the chi restored back by using shiatsu massage.

Another view from the Eastern perspective doesn’t see headaches, depression, sleeplessness, swollen joins, and indigestion as discomfort sources; however cites them as symptoms or signs that there exists underproductive or hyperactive chi, either which can be negative condition. Similarly, the eastern perspective sees that shiatsu massage therapy is good for these conditions.

How Is Shiatsu Administered To You

Before you are applied with the massage therapy, the practitioner first makes any diagnosis, in this case, to assess or find where the energy or chi may be obstructed and siphoned or where it flows healthily. They will inquire if you are suffering from specific ailments.

After which, they will administer some light massage to find where the tender or stiff pressure points are. After the diagnosis, firm pressure will be applied on the pressure points running along the fourteen meridians of your body through the use of their fingers, thumbs, palms, knuckles, knees, elbows, and feet.

As shiatsu massage is done on the clients with their clothes fully on, it is advised to wear garments that are loose, comfortable, and thin, like the linen or cloth, so it will be comfortable for them.

As you receive the acupressure treatment, expect stretching, rotating, and manipulating of your pressure points, as well as deep breathing. You are also expected to experience a slightly uncomfortable condition after the massage but this is normal.

Combining shiatsu massage therapy with a good physical workout, healthy diet, and proper lifestyle can lead to an improved overall well being. Having it regularly applied on you can also become preventative as much as healing to some specific health and psychological conditions.

Many people can offer different insights regarding how they deal with the uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms of Hepatitis C.

One valuable form of treatment gaining popularity that can provide great relief is acupressure, a therapy that relies on applying direct pressure to specific pressure points on the body to achieve a desired result.

Acupressure has been around for centuries, originating in China, where it was utilized to reduce pain and stimulate energy within the body.

Medical researchers soon discovered that energy blockages in the body were causing illnesses and, through the use of acupressure techniques, many of the side effects from these illnesses could be reduced or relieved completely.

Some of the most common symptoms of Hepatitis C (and side effects from traditional interferon treatment) are also highly receptive to acupressure. Examples include fatigue, headache, nausea and other flu-like symptoms.

Fatigue is often cited as the most frequently presented symptom of HCV; applying acupressure to certain pressure points can stimulate the flow of energy in the body, thus significantly lowering fatigue levels. Not only can acupressure help relieve these symptoms, but it has also proven helpful in the process of detoxification.

As it stimulates energy within the body, acupressure also increases blood circulation and assists the body in removing harmful substances.

With more Hepatitis C sufferers turning away from traditional pharmaceutical treatments in favor of alternative means of therapy, acupressure is becoming increasingly popular as a way to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms that accompany HCV.

Acupressure is an extremely viable form of treatment for many people with Hepatitis C, especially those who may be currently undergoing standard treatment. It is easy to learn (from a qualified practitioner, of course) and requires no equipment or tools.[]

To learn more about how this traditional Chinese therapy known as acupressure can offer you some much-needed relief of your HCV symptoms, visit: http://www.hepatitis-central.com/mt/archives/2007/11/pressure_points.html.

Acupressure therapy is one of the simplest, safest and effective methods of stimulating the site of pain or other disorders.

The Chinese used needles to stimulate these sites and named this healing as acupuncture while the Indians used bare fingers and hence name it Acupressure.

Sexual reflexology is a specialized niche within the science of reflexology and acupressure: The theory that by applying pressure to various regions of your hands or your feet, you can stimulate other parts of your body and thus relieve pain, stress, and tension.

Sexual reflexology refers to the theory that you can cure various ailments of the body through sexual intercourse. But it cannot just be any freestyle intercourse. It must be performed deliberately with focus on the stimulation of certain parts of the male or the female genitalia and erogenous zones of the body.

In treating disease, many factors come into play when using a holistic approach to healing. Some of the topics discussed may be the patient’s nutrition, whether or not the patient exercises and how often, emotional stressors that may be affecting the patient, and so on.

It is highly believed that all these factors play a role in the whole health of a patient due to the view that the mind, body, and spirit are all connected as one. This holistic approach often keeps patients from having to undergo risky drugs and/or surgery in order to correct their illnesses.

Dehydration is a major cause of nausea and headaches. Aim for 2.5 liters of water, unsweetened juices, and herbal teas. Soft drinks, caffeinated beverages, and sugary drinks are best avoided throughout your pregnancy.

Emotional eating is often triggered by fear, anger, and boredom. Conventional therapies for weight loss do deal directly with the issue of emotions, but most of us can attest to the fact that emotional cravings is partly to blame for our weight gain or loss.

Dr. Phil Mcgraw also touches on the fact that we must gain control of our emotions before we can have sustainable weight loss.

However, migraine headaches are among the most painful things that we can experience as humans. Of course, there are other painful things that we can experience, such as kidney stones but this type of headache is one that is going to cause serious problems for you as long as it sticks around.

If you only have a migraine on occasion, see if you can pin down what is causing it and relieve yourself of that cause. If you have them on a regular basis, you might want to consider going to a doctor to see if there is a medication that he can give you to overcome them.

The world has turned into one crazy spinning ball and its inhabitant’s mad-paced hunters of material wealth. Sadly this creates breeding ground for a lot of health problems. We are so much cramped for time that we struggle to maintain an exercise schedule, if at all we start one.

All this does is take away the sheen out of our metabolism. We become houses of toxic build-up, a receptacle for low energy levels and also quite vulnerable to obesity.[]

Acupressure seeks to regulate the flow of energy throughout the body. It helps to bring the body back into its natural balance.

This ancient healing art has been advanced by technology and is now available in the best massage chairs.

There are different types of acupressure based on the traditional trigger points in the body. The differences between the types are the rhythms, techniques and pressures used. For instance, Shiatsu is a subset of acupressure massage and is its most famous form.

Other techniques involve applying firm pressure for 3 to 5 seconds on trigger points. Another technique involves using a pressing pressure with an intermittent tapping action. Yet another technique involves slow pressure on the trigger points to induce whole body relaxation.

Many of the best massage chair brands like Panasonic, Omega and Sanyo include a body scan technology to accurately identify an individual persons acupressure points. The software then adjusts the massage for each person.

There are over 300 acupressure points that have been identified throughout the body. Acupressure uses these trigger points to manipulate the flow of energy throughout the body and to help to remove blockages.

The massage chair performs the scan of the individual and then depending on the acupressure program, the massage will target the trigger points on the back. Some chairs use slow kneading in combination with firm pressure.

Other chairs use gentle pressure with light, quick tapping. The programs in different chair models can vary as well as between manufacturers. The best is to try some different massage chairs to find out which ones are right for you.

To help you relax some massage chairs incorporate other features to compliment the acupressure massage. Most spas have soft meditative music to help the mind to relax and get away from thinking about the stresses of the day. Some massage chairs have MP3 players built in with headphones to help you to relax.

You can also find heat therapy, where there are heating elements constructed into the chair. Heat helps to reduce swelling and increase blood flow.

The acupressure massage helps to encourage the flow of blood and lymph. The increased flow of blood and lymph increase energy and help the body to heal. Additionally, some of the benefits of acupressure massage are the following:

Reduction in blood pressure
Reduction in stress and anxiety
Increased awareness and alertness
Increased energy

Acupressure massage has been used for centuries in many ancient societies. Now technology has made acupressure massage both cost effective and accessible to everyone with massage chairs. Massage chairs are actually a very cost effective means to obtain acupressure massage.

The real benefits of acupressure massage come with receiving it on a periodic basis. Just like any health related treatment, it must be performed through time. Having a massage chair recliner in your home provides you with access and a low cost means of obtaining acupressure massage on a routine basis.[]
