As we reported to you guys weeks and weeks ago, despite Fox ending the first season of Dollhouse one episode short, Fox executives decided to pick up the Joss Whedon show for its second season. Let’s simply call this the Firefly-effect, meaning Fox execs were worried more about canceling a great show on the cusp of finding an audience more than they were worried about Dollhouse struggling for a second season. Even though Fox tinkered with Whedon’s storytelling, I suppose we should be greatful they let him air the episodes in order.

Here’s the latest on the Dollhouse renewal from the Philadelphia Inquirer:

IF you’d been listening in on a conference call yesterday between Fox executives and reporters, you might have thought “Dollhouse” was the most important show on the network’s 2009-10 schedule.

But with the return of many shows already confirmed days, weeks and months before yesterday’s formal announcements to advertisers in New York, and most of the new shows still unseen, there didn’t seem to be much else to talk about than the renewal of “Dollhouse” and the cancellation of another sci-fi show, “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.”

“This is a bet on Joss Whedon,” declared Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly, as he explained to reporters yesterday that the network’s decision to give the struggling “Dollhouse” a second season was more a vote of confidence in the creator of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” than in the numbers his latest show is drawing.

Sure, it probably didn’t hurt that “Dollhouse,” which averaged just 3.72 million viewers this season and ranked 149th in the Nielsens among the 18- to 49-year-olds advertisers target, is “one of the biggest time-shifted shows on the air,” or that “Terminator,” which drew 4.63 million and ranked 122nd in the target demo, “was not an inexpensive show.”

But first, insisted Reilly, “it’s a bet on creativity and that’s something that has never changed.”

But if you're a loyal reader here at ActiveDollhouse.com, you already knew that, didn't you! What a great twist.

Well after Friday night’s fantastic episode, it’s finally confirmed — Alan Tudyk is indeed the mysterious Alpha! But if you’re a loyal reader here at ActiveDollhouse.com, you already knew that, didn’t you! What a great twist. I had it confirmed from several people that Firefly’s Wash indeed landed the role, but I have to admit it made me nervous seeing Tudyk’s first role in the show as the crazy, tree-hugging, environmentalist. But that made it all the more fun when we found out (as did Victor!!) that he was really Alpha! Entertainment Weekly has a great interview with Tudyk following his latest episode. Check it out:

OMFG, Alpha is Wash! On tonight’s penultimate Dollhouse, the knife-wielding evildoer known as Alpha finally showed his face — and it belonged to none other than Firefly sidekick Alan Tudyk! Okay, so the reveal didn’t come as a complete surprise. Rumors have been swirling for months that Joss Whedon had tapped a member of his elite repertory company to play the rogue doll. Nonetheless, it was a pretty fraktastic twist to have Alpha masquerading as an agoraphobic environmentalist — not to mention the architect of the Dollhouse itself. Even more surprising: He and Echo are lovers! In his first interview since being unmasked, Tudyk reveals what it was like keeping the worst kept secret in tubeland, how he got pumped for the role, and why next week’s finale is going to blow fans’ minds.

Is it nice to finally be able to talk about this role?
ALAN TUDYK: [Laughs] Yeah, it’s been a long time coming, right?

Even though word already leaked out…
TUDYK: Unbelievable. I don’t know how they found out. I even spoke to a group of people in Baltimore after the rumor hit the web and I said, “Listen, there’s a rumor on the Web that I’m in Dollhouse and I’m not. Whoever said that is lying.” I totally lied and it didn’t help at all. My lies were all for nothing.

Let’s go back to the beginning: Did Joss Whedon personally offer you the role?
TUDYK: Joss told me about the role at a social function. I was asking about his new show and he started describing the role of Alpha. It sounded like the most amazing role ever, and I asked him, “Who’s playing him?” He really hyped it up. And then he said, “I want you to play it.” It really caught me off guard. I think it’s the best role ever written. As an actor there’s so much there to work with. I guess Joss always saw me as somebody who could be 43 different people at once.

It’s a different role for you — at least the Alpha part of it is. Were you surprised Joss saw that darkness in you?
TUDYK: I’ve always been a raving lunatic in front of Joss. He saw that side of me the time I trashed his house because I was crazy that day. [Laughs] I was really happy he saw me as that. It’s quite a compliment to offer me a role like this, because it’s not easy.

Speaking of which, you look like you put on some muscle for the part.
TUDYK: Yes, because they cast a damn body double that looks like the Hulk! Joss showed me the first episode where you see Alpha from behind and I was like, “Oh my God. I’ve got a lot of work to do.” But I have a Ned Flanders kind of body. When I’m wearing baggy clothes you wouldn’t expect that I have any muscle. Just like in tonight’s episode. I don’t look too wildly in shape at first. It’s when I put on the tight shirt that you see it.

What can you tell me about next week’s finale?
TUDYK: Everything that Alpha has done has been about Echo. He’s obsessed with this woman. And next week you find out what his plans are for her, and why he’s obsessed with her.

"Not refusing, but just not interested. I assumed that meant the bell tolled for us. And they made a point of calling and saying, 'That is not what it means, and we'll keep you posted.' " Will "Dollhouse" make it? This Chicago writer says it definitely should!

Hey guys, we’re back (one totaled car later), but I picked a great week to do it since there was no Dollhouse last week. As many of you know, since “A True Believer,” Dollhouse has been must-see TV, and we’re not the only ones who think so. Check out this article from the Chicago Tribune:

As I’ve written recently, I consider “Dollhouse” (9 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. CST) to be must-see viewing. The last few episodes of the Fox drama have been quite compelling, but the show’s return for a second season is in doubt.

It feels like deja vu all over again — a Fox show created by Joss Whedon is in danger. But as far as Whedon is concerned, the script that some fans are writing — about an evil network trying to crush Whedon’s creation, as happened years ago on Fox with “Firefly” — is itself in need of revision.

The process of birthing the show was rough, he said, because its central concept, which revolves around operatives whose minds are given mental implants for specific missions, is “a hard, hard premise. The premise kept me up at night long before I got a network note,” he said in a Monday interview in the lobby of his Chicago hotel.

And though there has been a kerfuffle over Fox’s not wanting to air the show’s 13th episode — the reasons are complicated, but suffice to say the season is set to end May 8, with the 12th episode of “Dollhouse” — Whedon says there’s a chance that Episode 13 may be available on TV, not just on DVD.

The decision to air that episode may hinge on whether “Dollhouse,” which has ripened into a poignant and twisted meditation on identity, memory and exploitation, will come back for another season.

The show has been ratings-challenged, but it has done well via other platforms (it’s very popular with DVR users), so it might return.

“I assumed it was dead in the water because the network was refusing to air the 13th [episode],” Whedon said.

“Not refusing, but just not interested. I assumed that meant the bell tolled for us. And they made a point of calling and saying, ‘That is not what it means, and we’ll keep you posted.’ ”

Though recent episodes have delved into the complex history and function of the Dollhouse, Friday’s episode will be a stand-alone affair. Whedon called it a “drawing-room mystery.”

“It’s a quirky little piece with a lot of guest stars,” Whedon said. “I’m a little nervous about it. I think [star] Eliza [Dushku] is great in it. But I’m wondering, are people going to go, ‘Now wait a minute, [where's the mythology]?’ But it was my decision in the middle of all this to say, ‘Wait a minute, we can’t just be about our own mythology. Let’s try this other thing.’ ”

If the mysterious Dollhouse closes, Whedon has other irons in the fire — he’s at work on the film “The Cabin in the Woods,” he said that he and his collaborators are hoping to shoot the next chapter of the online musical “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” in spring 2010, and he’s open to the idea of shopping around another show some day, perhaps to a cable network.

Fox has decided not to air all 13 episodes of Dollhouse and will instead finish the first season of the show with Episode 12. Notice, that we said the season finale will come with Episode 12 — not the series finale. Fox’s decision to omit the last episode from this season has no bearing on its decision to renew Dollhouse for a second season.

Felicia Day broke the news on Twitter. Here’s her two posts:

@feliciaday: Man, day getting worse and worse. Found out my Dollhouse ep, #13 isn’t gonna air. Only on DVD. Such a great part too. Thx Fox. :( - (2 p.m. EST 4/9/09)

@feliciaday: Thx all, to clarify seems like they’ll air #12 as the finale and not air my ep #13 at all? So weird Ask @foxbroadcasting I guess? - (3 p.m. EST 4/9/09)

Personally, I think this decision could actually help the show. Some of the best episodes so far have been written by Tim Minear, the writer of the 12th episode, and that episode deals exclusively with Alpha. Apparently the 13th episode is more of a standalone episode, the kind that haven’t been quite as good as the others Joss Whedon created. Check out what E! Online had to say about this decision:

OK, brace yourself, guys, because there’s going to be math in this story.

Fox the television network will not be airing the “13th episode” of Dollhouse, as tweeted by @drhorrible and @feliciaday. However, there appears to be some debate about what qualifies as a 13th episode and what qualifies as a season finale.

Fox the television network ordered 13 episodes of Dollhouse. As everybody knows, they scrapped the original pilot, “Echo.” So that is 13 less one, which brings us down to 12. The 12th and final episode that Fox the television network ordered and paid for and will air is called “Omega” and was written and directed by Tim Minear (who has told us he “can’t wait” for us to see it). Focused on the Alpha storyline, sources say that “Omega” apparently “closes some doors and opens other ones,” and was always intended to be and serves effectively as the season one finale.

A last, and very important, note: According to sources on the network side, them not picking up and airing “Epitaph One” has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not they pick up the series for a second season, a situation which, I’m told, is “100 phase in the decision phase.” You can obviously believe them or not as you choose, but I take them at their word. I may be a sucker like that.

For the full article you can go to E! Online.

Also, let us know in the comments section what you think about this decision. Is it best to end the season on a strong Alpha episode? Or would you rather see that 13th episode?

We’ve gotten word from our friends at Airlock Alpha that Fox will shake up its lineup in the fall but renew Dollhouse and move it to a new night. It’s just a rumor and hasn’t been confirmed by Fox, but check out the article with a link at the bottom:

The Fox network is just a step away from shaking up its Friday lineup for the 2009-10 season, canning one show and considering a move to a new night for a second.

Let’s hit the good news first. Airlock Alpha has learned that Fox is looking to give its struggling Dollhouse a second season, to see if it can grow some legs on a new night. Fox had originally intended Dollhouse to air Mondays with 24, but Fox instead decided to move House to that spot to replace Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and to create sort of a genre theme night on Fridays.

The audience for Dollhouse is not exactly where Fox had hoped it would be, however, critical reaction to later episodes following its February premiere has grown more positive toward the series as it has had the chance to flesh itself out. Showrunner Joss Whedon had said ahead of its premiere that he had gone back to retool certain aspects of the show, including using a new premiere episode than what was originally planned, eventually canning what would have been the premiere.

The move seems to be an easy one for Fox. While the audience hasn’t been as large as expected, it has instead remained stable. It’s not a number that Fox uses, but Dollhouse carries a BlipNetwork Stability Index Rating of 92.0, better than every other network genre show currently on television outside of Reaper on The CW, which has a 94.7. A Stability Index Rating is the comparison of the show’s highest overnight rating and its average overnight rating to see how much of its overall audience a show has retained.

Other factors in favor of the show continuing is that it’s not as expensive as other Fox shows. Much of its upfront costs, including the construction of the elaborate set that is the dollhouse itself, were covered by funds that normally would’ve paid for a pilot (no pilot was made for Dollhouse). Also, while Whedon’s Mutant Enemy Productions and star Eliza Dushku’s Boston Diva Productions are tied to the series, 20th Century Fox Television is still the primary production company involved, which means its licensing fee is not as steep as it would be if the show was produced by another studio.

That, along with ratings, is one of the aspects killing Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. That show is set to end its second season April 10 after a 22-episode run, but its sophomore season has been nothing but a complete struggle.
After a so-so debut on Mondays and never finding its grip after that with audiences, Fox teetered on canceling the show until surprisingly deciding to give it a full-season pickup and moving it to Fridays as a lead-in to Dollhouse.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Fox, so it should be treated as any rumor would, meaning information can change, or could even be wrong.

Read the full article and find out what Fox plans to do with Dollhouse-lead in, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
More awesome Dollhouse fan video from a huge Dollhouse fan and young filmmaker–our friend, Antonio.
This video features scenes of Victor and Sierra (Dollhouse’s very own cute couple), set to the song “Stripped,” by Shiny Gun Toys. Great music and clips that really capture some of the emotion from the show. Hope you enjoy this and be sure to pass it on to your friends to help Antonio get the recognition he deserves.
