In the book Panzer Operations of Gerhard Raus there is talk about KV-1`s being knocked out by a 100mm high velocity gun. It was the first encounter of de 6th panzer with this tank on the road to leningrad. I`ve always been wondering which gun this was. In my opinion it could`nt have been a howitzer because of the low velocity of this gun. Anybody`s got an idea/photo?

I was wondering how a typical German civilian or soldier became a tank crew member at various times during the war. Could you just walk up to a recruitment station and pick your career as a tanker? Was it more difficult to get in the tank corps than most other military positions?

Also, did you, as a soldier or civilian recruit have any say-so in what type of armored vehicle you'd be a crew member of? In other words, could you, as a civilian recruit, ask to be placed in a Panzer III in 1939, or a Panzer IV in 1941-42. Or did they decide where you'd go? How was it decided?

If you were already in the tank corps, could you request to be transferred to a different type or model of tank when new tanks came out? How did they decide who would be put into the newest, supposedly most powerful tanks like the Panther or Tiger I when they came out? Could you be a newly trained recruit to get in a Tiger I, or was it reserved for SS and top tank aces?

Obviously the tank corps would have gone through a lot of changes and tough times after 1943 or so, and maybe like the SS and other top military organizations, they would have made it easier to join, as they needed soldiers desperately.

Hi folks:

I read this book a few years ago. It focuses on the events after Normandy to the Fall of Berlin. Some of the key things I remember:

-extensive descriptions of battles of German tanks vs british armor. Brits had to advance against Panzers who were emplaced on hills with good field of fire. Suffered heavy losses. can't remember the location. [ on a side note, I think this is where German armor shows its best advantages which is when fighting in tank country, i.e. a place where the long reach of their guns comes into play. However, in the bocage or urban environment or in the hilly areas of France and Germany and the Bulge area, that advantage is negated especially as well if you (the German) are outnumbered and have to worry not only about Shermans but also M-10s, M-18 and M-36s.

-Jagdtigers: re, the recent thread. I remember a description of Jagdtigers brewing up several Shermans at extreme range. The encounter I think was in Germany at a river crossing.

I've been watching the series "Greatest tank battles" very cool show,
anyway i was really surprised to see that during the battle of the Buldge
when Patton's relief force was heading to Bastone they were intercepted
in a small town by 4 Jagdtigers, which really banged them up.

I thought no Jagdtigers were in this battle due to their very slow speed
and such?
And the Americans had to retreat and try on another day.
This is the first story i've heard of Jagtigers having success in the field,
other than Otto's story.

Hello gents, I came across a list of surviving panzer IIIs during the course of doing research and saw that Kevin Wheatcroft owns a Panzer III ausf. M. This list I am referring to is just a pdf file that I am sure most of you have seen before, and if you haven't, searching "surviving panzer III" in google will probably have it in the top result. Anyway, the thing that caught me as odd about this Panzer III was the fact that the guide claimed that Wheatcroft recovered this tank from Tunisia in 1986. Maybe I am not correct, but I didn't think any Panzer III M went to Tunisia. I thought the latest model that made it there was the ausf. L.

The Wheatcroft "ausf. M" has a few things that make me wonder about whether it is actually an M or not though. For one, it lacks the smoke dischargers and Bosch headlights. Instead it mounts a Notek on the fender and the old-style headlights adjacent to the brake vents. It also is lacking almost all of the wading cover components for the engine intakes, and all that is there is one small piece of it on the starboard side.

What is does have is the mounting pegs on the brake vent covers for the wading plugs, and the snorkel exhaust w/ necessary components in the rear of the tank.

So I guess to get back to the meat of it, is this really a Panzer III M? and if so, did it really come from Tunisia? Does anyone have TOE info on what the German units had in Tunisia? My main interest would be in seeing what 10 Pz.D. took with them to Tunisia. According to Panzer III L/M by Parada,Jablonski, and Hryniewiki, the ausf. M was produced from October '42- Feb '43, and since to my knowledge the 10th Pz.D was shipped in mid-late November, so I guess it is possible some initial ausf. Ms maybe could have found there way to Tunisia???

What do you guys think?

Hello everyone,
It is now almost 30 years, that I spend some times on modelling and military communities and this question is more and more important to me.
Germans has lost the war, did'nt they ?
Go on a modelling contest, 80% of the military vehicles are blakcrossed, the same way about the aircrafts.
A friend of mine has a little museum in the Ardennes, peoples are spending far much time lookin' at the german troops artefacts.
Was it because the camouflages are more specifics ?
Was it because the diversity of materials ?
Wathever I don't understand this attraction.
For me, it's easy to understand, it's an ancestors affair.
Could you tell me what is making a Panzerwaffe enthusiast out of you ?
