He looked upon a sea of friendly faces and saw a dream come true.
Southern New Jersey is a place where musicians have a hard time finding venues to play original music. Executives rarely show up to hand out recording deals.

Enders, of Hammonton, had beaten the odds. Not only was he making a living playing his music, he and his four-piece band had just released its second album, "The Mother, The Mechanic, and the Path." Getting the massive three-disc set onto record racks had taken some real dedication to their artistic vision and a little arm-wrestling with their record company. But they'd done it.

Tonight, Enders and the group looked forward to playing songs in front of 2,000 friends and fans crowding this first major headlining gig in Atlantic City.

It was time to forget about the hard work of making the album, time to forget about band troubles that emerged during the recording. It was time to rock out and enjoy the moment.
Because within six months it would be over.
l l l

It's now the winter of 2009 and Enders sits in a recording studio he's built for himself in this rural southern New Jersey community.

Dressed in gray jeans and a black jacket, with the scruff of a beard bristling from his chin, Enders is swinging a golf club and talking about his big move back into the spotlight next month.

That's when he releases "When I Hit the Ground," a new disc with his new ensemble, Ace Enders and A Million Different People. The thin, 26-year-old musician (who could easily pass for someone a few years younger) is also starting a nationwide tour. The tour kicks off with a March 11 show in Atlanta with a stop on April 8 at the Trocadero in Philadelphia.

The tour is big news because, for the past 18 months, Enders has disappeared from the eyes of the casual observer.

It's been time well spent, the musician says.

"I've really grown as a songwriter. It (the CD) is more evolved, put together and thought out," said Enders, who recorded the album with just the help of producer Chris Badami. "It's the best record I've done yet."

Jason Howie, of North Carolina, the drummer in the new group, said he was drawn to be a part of Enders' band for a few reasons.

"I knew he was a hard-working musician. He wanted to earn the respect of his fans and other bands by putting out good music and touring hard," Howie said. "I knew he wrote honest music that was from the heart, and in today's music climate, that is sometimes hard to find."

Enders started making music from the heart when he was a teenager and picked up his stepdad's acoustic guitar that was sitting in the basement.

Enders taught himself to sing, play guitar and write songs. Even then he was dreaming of a record deal. He couldn't play the bass or drums. He needed a band. So he started finding locals guys with the same taste in music and the same goals.

Most of the members of The Early November were in place by 2001 - Enders, bassist Sergio Anello and drummer Jeff Kummer, both of Sicklerville, were the first on board. Drummer Joe Marro, also of Hammonton, joined a year later, with guitarist Bill Lugg of Egg Harbor City coming on board in 2005.

By the time Lugg arrived, part two of Enders' plan was in place - The Early November had landed a deal with Drive-Thru Records.

Enders' happiest day in The Early November was when the band signed its recording deal in 2002.

In all those years of planning and working toward the goal, he hadn't considered what would come after he signed on the dotted line. He felt stress for the next six years in the group even though his band played more than 1,000 shows, visited six countries and sold nearly 500,000 CDs during their time together.

Enders learned there was a great deal of hard work and heartache involved in a music career.

Even landing a great gig, like the times the group participated in punk-influenced Warped Tour in 2004 to 2006, could batter the ego. The Early November stayed at the same level of success while some of their peers, including Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, had their careers take off after participating in the traveling festival.

When the band set out to record its second full-length CD, "The Mother, The Mechanic, and the Path" in 2005, Enders wanted to release a triple CD.

Enders' label and people surrounding him told him to release just one. He stuck to his guns.

"Why not do something that's really worth it, that's not a sure bet," he asked at the time. In order to provide fans three discs for the price of one, The Early November and Drive-Thru Records both agreed eventually to spend more on the production and significantly reduce their royalties.

"Hair" was the first single and video from the group's triple CD.

MTV2 and mtvU hosted all-day premieres of the video, and MTV2.com streamed the entire triple disc for a week before its release date. But during the album's second week of release, MTV dropped the video. Radio didn't want to play the single.

While the group stood together to get the album made the way it wanted, things were not going well among the members.

"Someone was quitting the band every other week," said Enders.

With the record out, the band pulled together for one last tour. By this time the group had reached the level of headliner, being the featured attraction in theater-size venues in cities such as Las Vegas, San Diego, Chicago and Cleveland.

But even as The Early November reached a level of success the members had all worked to achieve, the band released a statement announcing it was going on "indefinite hiatus."

"We need to take some time and see that life isn't all dirty rock clubs, rest stops at 2 a.m. and long distance phone calls," the band's statement read.

Enders remembers the band's final gigs with a mixture of happiness and sadness.

"It was the tail end of the tour. I was in Buffalo, N.Y., one week before the tour was supposed to end, and my grandmother was extremely ill," Enders said. "My grandmother (eventually) passed away. I grew up with her. She was like a second mother to me. It happened the night before the first Philadelphia concert. I thought about canceling. She came to all the shows."

Enders and his wife drove from Hammonton to the Trocadero in Philadelphia. They arrived at 2 p.m. and did a soundcheck.

"Everybody was every supportive. ... We spent as much time together as possible," said Enders.

Even with the band of the verge of splitting, the Trocadero shows were the kind musicians live for.

"The first night, we played for one hour. The second night, we played for two hours. The crowd reaction was really out of control, crazy. They were having a lot of fun. They all knew it was our last show. They were very excited," said Enders about these two shows. "I said, 'Thank you very much for all your support. This is our favorite venue, and we are very, very appreciative.'"

The band then played the Bamboozle festival in East Rutherford. And then it was over.

l l l

When The Early November's lineup crystallized, Enders was 19 years old and single. Now, he was married and 25 and wondering what the future held.

Enders built his recording studio and wrote more songs. He did a solo tour at the end of August 2007, and he was back on the road in the fall of 2007 with his Million Different People band.

In late 2007, Enders travelled to Los Angeles to record a new disc with more accomplished musicians, but he didn't like the final result.

He also recorded an eight-track album titled "The Secret Wars" in his studio and made it available for as a free download last June. If he had shows anywhere between Boston and Virginia, he did them solo. He went on the road with the full band for separate tours with the groups, Steel Train, Angels & Airwaves and Cute Is What We Aim For.

Even with all this activity, Enders thought about putting a end to his music career. Things came to a head during a tour stop last summer in Portland, Ore. He was a little miserable and depressed. He felt terrible playing and was performing for audiences that were much younger than he was used to.

"I was thinking of different ways to quit after the show. I was sitting in the van, and a kid knocked on the door," Enders said.

The young man told Enders he was on a journey. He was coming out of the mountains of Oregon, and he and his friends were starting a company to change the world. He came to town to hand out flyers and to try to see Enders because he'd heard the musician's song "Bring Back Love."

"He was a really nice person, who was staying in the mountains the entire two weeks in a tent and hunting," Enders said. "I had forgotten for a moment why I made music. That was really big for me that five to 10 minutes talking to this kid. Me and my wife had our moods improve by 100 percent. He was inspired by everything I was doing."

The conversation with the mountain man convinced Enders to do whatever it took to record a third CD. That meant investing all his money to record "When I Hit The Ground," which Vagrant Records, out of California, is licensing to release from Drive-Thru Records, which is still Enders' label.

It's a gamble, but one Enders is willing to take.

"I always wanted to do things with integrity. When I'm 90 years old, I want to look back and know that I worked for this," Enders said. "I'm proud of everything that happened. ... I love to write music."

E-mail Vincent Jackson:

VJackson@pressofac.com

About Dropping Some Craig Owens dates

I'm sorry to anyone who was expecting to see me with Craig on any of the dates that I had to cancel.
