An August 2009 study (as reported in the National Geographic) says that nearly one-fifth of watermelons grown in the United States alone, don’t end up on our fruit bowls. They are rejected for their lack of quality and are left on the vines to rot. But from this waste could come the next source of green fuel.

The unwanted watermelons are not picked from the vine because of scarred rinds or odd shapes that are rejected by customers. Study co-author Wayne Fish, a chemist with the Agricultural Research Service in Lane, Oklahoma, says –

“If you figure a field of watermelon may yield somewhere between 60 and 100 tons per acre of watermelon, a fifth of that can be substantial.”

We can factor in that figure for the whole of United States and arrive at a considerable renewable source for bio-ethanol.

The study was almost a serendipitous discovery because Wayne and his co-workers were actually working on a process to extract antioxidant compounds from watermelon juice. They realized that the residue rich in sugars could be a source for a bio-fuel.

The research team distilled 23 gallons (87 liters) of ethanol from an acre’s worth of the unused watermelon fruit using an experimental lab process.
Farmers can homebrew the watermelon juice and keep all the output for self use, as Wayne says –

“For average-size growers that have 300 to 1,000 acres [121 to 405 hectares], they may just keep the ethanol themselves and use it in their own production.”

Presently, it doesn’t look practical to setup a processing facility to collect and manufacture biofuel from watermelon juice. Wayne himself sees ‘mobile breweries’ that could be the vehicles for collecting unwanted watermelons, door to door.

The word ‘brewery’ also suggests a possible use as an alcoholic beverage. But Wayne says that it’s not going to be anytime soon and definitely not with the present process. The oils produced during the experimental process gave the brew an unpalatable flavor. As Wayne says,

“Don’t expect to see any watermelon beer at your local tavern anytime soon. At least as produced at Lane, Oklahoma.”

But if it can just power our cars, it would be sufficient for a cheer and a toast.

All big cats are majestic creatures, but one by one each different species of wild cats seem to be dwindling and the rare snow leopard is just another one on the list. According to USA Today a snow leopard was caught in Afghanistan and transported over rough terrain for two to three days. As a result of this traumatic event, the snow leopard didn’t survive after a week under capture. Fortunately, extensive efforts are being made to prevent another snow leopard from meeting its doom by human hands.

Snow leopards are wild animals as well as solitary creatures, so being man handled in such a way stripped the cat of everything it knew. It’s not surprising that such an experience resulted in death. However, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture based in Afghanistan as well as the Panthera and Snow Leopard Trust are working toward a future more abundant in snow leopards.

From our perspective it’s horrific to know that these animals are being trapped and killed by villagers, but some of the reasons are understandable. People living near these predators live in remote areas, and they usually rely on livestock for food and money. The livestock makes convenient and satisfying food for the snow leopard, but when the big cat steals from its human neighbors, there is often a steep price to pay. This situation is a problem, but the trust has developed common sense solutions to prevent more unnecessary snow leopard deaths.

First, the non-profit conservation group awards communities at the end of the year with a bonus if they haven’t killed a big cat. This fosters an incentive and gives the villagers a goal to work toward. Second, livestock vaccination is offered to people with herds. The medicine ensures that more of the herd stays healthy, so even if a snow leopard decides to kill a few, it won’t be too much of a downfall for the villager.

In essence snow leopards are somewhat of a nuisance to villagers in Afghanistan, but the trust is mending the relationship between man and big cat so that both can live peacefully together.

Global warming has taken a back seat to the economy in terms of what people are worrying about today. Further issues with the level of concern regarding global warming have been the skepticism that climate change scientists have been facing due to hacked emails and report errors. All of these things have resulted in dwindling support for climate change legislation and increasing disregard for global warming worries.

The reduction in concern regarding climate change appears to be a worldwide phenomenon, with a select few areas still expressing similar concern from before. A recent study by the Nielson/Oxford University found that concerns surrounding global warming are still the greatest concern in such areas as Latin America and countries in Asia-Pacific, including the Philippines.

However, eastern European countries were found to have the lowest concern for global warming. Recent polls in the United States have found that global warming has not dropped to so low a standing as eastern European countries, though there is an increasing lack of worry regarding climate change.

A new Gallop poll performed earlier in March found that the majority of Americans think global warming is exaggerated. Forty-eight percent believe climate change is exaggerated, which is seven percentage points higher than in 2009. This is drastically above the thirty-one percent from 1997.

In addition, nineteen percent of those polled believe the consequences of global warming will never happen. Sixteen percent believe any consequences that do occur will not occur in their lifetime. This poll included 1,014 adults from across the United States and has a margin of error of plus or minus four percent.

This skepticism may impact legislation passing in the United States and other locations in which skepticism is rising due to politicians not wanting to upset voters in their areas.

Do you think it’s peculiar that humans drink cow’s milk and eat it in cheese form? Milk, whether from a human or a cow, is designed to help that particular species’ offspring grow and maintain proper nutrition during the early years of its life. A cow’s milk is meant for a calf to help build its immunity, strength and overall health and well-being. Regardless of this face, the dairy industry still exists and produces milk and cheese products for human consumption. But what if human milk was up for consumption?

Recently, a New York City chef Daniel Angerer has been in the media for making cheese from his spouse’s extra breast milk. Who could blame the guy for going on a culinary adventure? It’s surprising that a story like this hasn’t made the news before. But in all fairness, human breast milk cheese isn’t really out of left field. Some people eat cheese made from cow’s milk without any concerns.

Angerer’s blog about making human breast milk cheese spiraled out of control with wild rumors about him selling and storing the cheese in his restaurant. These claims were untrue, but it didn’t stop the New York Health Department from verifying their falsity and banning the fromage.

It’s obvious that human breast milk cheese is controversial, but shouldn’t cow’s milk be just as controversial? Maybe human breast milk cheese will become just as commonplace as cow’s milk cheese…anything is possible. Until then you can read about the taste of human breast milk cheese at the Daily Beast and read Gael Greene’s review.

In case you or your significant other is lactating, Angerer has written a blog entitled “Mommy’s Milk,” which further discusses his cheese making experiment. He even provides a step-by-step recipe so you can create it at home.

Human breast milk cheese is definitely a sustainable and natural alternative to cow’s, goat’s and sheep’s milk, but it’s doubtful that it will become mainstream any time soon. Can you imagine dairy farms for lactating female humans? It’s definitely an interesting concept, but after a certain age, you have to wonder if any adult should be drinking milk at all.

The United States is hoping to attain at least twenty percent of their energy needs from the wind energy sector by the year 2030. Other countries and the European Union have similar aspirations. However, some researchers are looking at the potential side effects of using large amounts of wind power.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) performed a study to determine what would happen to the climate surrounding large wind turbine installations. The study resulted in the researchers determining that large wind turbine installations are actually capable of raising temperatures.

The researchers studied climates surrounding wind turbine installations on land and sea. They found that when wind contributed ten percent of the worldwide demand for energy, it caused a temperature increase on land of approximately 1 degree Celsius.

The researchers discovered that with installations at sea, the same amount of wind energy produced resulted in a decrease in temperature of 1 degree Celsius. Overall, the results are due to wind turbines reducing wind in the area of the installations. Such reduction in wind speed in the respective areas causes the land to warm due to the reduced cooling effect of the wind.

The researchers hope that this study will cause other more elaborate studies to take place, they do not want to support the reduction of wind power use. Ron Prinn, a professor of Atmospheric Science, stated: “We’re not pessimistic about wind. We haven’t absolutely proven this effect, and we’d rather see that people do further research.“ However, they have stated that using large amounts of wind energy may prove expensive due to the unpredictable nature of wind.

It’s the Noah’s Ark for the biodiversity that exists on our planet. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault has just got its 500,000th member. The giant seed box which is meant as a cryogenic deep freeze of a large variety of seeds could be a planet saver in case something goes horribly wrong with our planet in the not so distant future.

The latest members to be incorporated in the ‘Hall of Fame’ are a mold-resistant bean, a German pink tomato and a wild strawberry plucked from the flanks of a Russian volcano.

Cary Fowler, executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust said,

“Reaching the half million mark brings mixed emotions, because while it shows that the vault at Svalbard is now the gold standard for diversity, it comes at a time when our agriculture systems are really sitting on a knife’s edge.”

The Global Crop Diversity Trust along with the Norwegian government and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center in Sweden are the watchdogs for the vault. The vault is one of the few that are located around the world.
All seeds that are brought into the vault for safekeeping are duplicates of those that have been kept in other vaults. The duplication acts like a failsafe mechanism and ensures that biodiversity can be kept maintained even if one vault remains intact in the event of a global cataclysm.

Cary Fowler added,

“Svalbard is a fail-safe backup to be used whenever a depositing seed bank loses part or all of its collection, but we should focus equally on averting the disasters in the first place.”

The very location of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has been kept in mind for the purpose at hand. The inaccessible location coupled with the Arctic cooling forms nature’s own vault. The seed vault is situated near the village of Longyearbyen, Svalbard – a group of islands north of mainland Norway. The arctic permafrost is the natural refrigerant for the seeds, while additional cooling brings the temperatures down to minus 18 degrees Celsius.

Then we have the human factor - Anyone seeking access to the seeds themselves will have to pass through four locked doors: the heavy steel entrance doors, a second door approximately 115 meters down the tunnel and finally the two keyed air-locked doors. Keys are coded to allow access to different levels of the facility. Not all keys unlock all doors.

So, let’s rest easy and hope that we never have to fall back on the Global Seed Vault project.

The days of having a vegetarian/vegan dilemma when it comes time for eating out are slowing becoming the days of old. Now with the Internet and new iPhone apps, you can scout out the best veg-friendly eateries from home or your car. Vegetarian/vegan options are more conveniently available than you might think.

Strict vegetarians and vegans deal with food on a daily basis just like a non-veg person, but if the alternatives weren’t so readily accessible, vegans wouldn’t exist. In the past, it might have been more challenging to find dairy free and meat free meals, but products in the grocery stores as well as meals in restaurants are starting to accommodate for this group. Even if you want to live a greener lifestyle by eating vegetarian/vegan meals when dining out, you can do this with the click of a mouse or touch of your finger.

Many restaurant menus are listed online for you to view. So if you’re weary about finding something decent to eat, you can make sure they have delicious meals for you too. Some sites you can check out include AllMenus.com, MenuPages.com and Menuism.com. It’s also beneficial to read the reviews and ratings too. Another option is to call the restaurant directly and find out what they have to offer, especially when the menu isn’t listed online.

An even faster way to figure out where you can eat is to use a new app called Veg Out, which is a vegetarian restaurant guide available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Through the settings, you can add your current location and find vegetarian, vegan and veg-friendly dining areas that are one, two, five, ten or twenty miles away. Once it processes your request, you can look at the places on the map and even get quick directions to the one you want to go to. You might be surprised and find a place you never knew about that is only a few miles away from you.

Whether you’re traveling or at home base most of the time, there are several ways to find veg-friendly restaurants to help keep you on your eco-friendly diet or open up your eyes to the alternatives.

Carbon dioxide is the greenhouse gas emissions most often discussed in terms of climate change. While methane is a more potent greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide emissions are more prevalent. Carbon dioxide, therefore, is the most frequently tracked emission throughout the year. Recent carbon dioxide level measurements have risen concerns as emissions seem to be increasing.

Carbon dioxide levels have increased at least by a third since the Industrial Era began in the 1800s. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse emissions have been steadily increasing since, and in recent years have been shown to be drastically increasing. However, the recent economic downturn across the globe had been slated to reduce emissions, especially in combination with climate change efforts going on worldwide.

However, recent results of measurements performed at Norway’s Zeppelin station located on the Arctic Svalbard archipelago indicates that emissions have not slowed. During early March of 2009, carbon dioxide levels were at 393.17 and during the same time period in 2010 levels were at 393.71.

Johan Stroem from the Norwegian Polar Institute stated: “Looking back at the data we have from Zeppelin since the end of the 1980s it seems like the increase is accelerating.” This sentiment is common amongst climate change scientists. Not only is an increase a concern for the planet overall, it is even more alarming due to previous expectations of a slow-down due to the economy.

In addition, the carbon levels for Svalbard are not at their peak levels as of yet. The levels are at their highest in April, when plants which have rotted release their stores of carbon. Stroem has suggested that the increase in concentrations, especially in the Arctic, may be due to dwindling ice. The decrease in ice allows for more plant growth and therefore more rotting plants. While the plants growth may absorb carbon and hide further emission escalations, when they rot it will cause a spike in emissions.

New cosmetics and other beauty care products come out on a regular basis, and sometimes it’s hard to resist the amazing advertising claims to eliminate wrinkles, hydrate the skin, balance out your skin tone, etc. In addition to the intriguing commercials, the packaging and newly formulated colors might draw you in too. As a consumer, you have to look past these marketing ploys and find out if you’re buying a product that is healthy for your skin and the environment. Believe it or not, there are more than a handful of harmful ingredients you have to watch out for.

Hydroquinone
This is often used to lighten the skin to help age spots fade. One thing you might not know is that as this chemical is lightening, it reduces your skin’s natural melanin and makes your skin more susceptible to UVA and UVB rays. Hydroquinone is illegal in Japan, Australia and Europe but has limited use in the U.S.

Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) & Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)
These antioxidants are used in lipsticks as well as sunscreen. Unfortunately, it’s toxic to the human body, specifically the immune, neurologic and other body systems.

Fragrance
It’s easy to buy a product for its scent, but synthetic chemicals are usually behind that lovely smell. Some compounds of chemicals are toxic and even cancer causing.

Triclosan
This ingredient is common in deodorants, acne products and toothpaste. Because it accumulates in your body fat, it can cause thyroid issues.

These are just a few of the harmful cosmetic ingredients that you might not know about. More familiar ones include paraben, formaldehyde, petrolatum and sodium lauryl sulfate. Often these ingredients find their way into beauty care products because they’re cheap. It’s beneficial to read the ingredients label and purchase products that contain natural ingredients that you can pronounce. If you there is an ingredient listed that you have never heard of, simply Google it and find out what it is and where it comes from. There are so many natural alternatives that you’re sure to find a similar product that is safer for your skin and the planet.
The increasing acidity of the oceans is leaving many experts concerned about the future of numerous marine species, especially those that need to form shells. Shellfish are considered highly susceptible to changing ocean acidity due to their need to build shells, which a higher acidity can drastically decrease.

In order to acknowledge this issue, the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to include the oceans bordering coastal states in the Clean Water Act. Acidity issues have been previously addressed at the state level involving lakes and rivers. However, to date the oceans bordering states have not been considered part of the Clean Water Act.

In order to address this discrepancy in the Clean Water Act, the Center for Biological Diversity sued the EPA regarding the state of Washington. The recent announcement by the EPA to consider having the coastal states include ocean acidity is the result of the lawsuit.

An attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, Miyoko Sakashita, stated: “It’s one of the most important threats to water quality right now. It’s affecting waters around the world, and it’s particularly stark in the waters off the West Coast.”

If states begin controlling ocean acidity, many believe states will have to be stricter in controlling fossil fuel emissions and carbon dioxide emissions from other sources. This has caused many opponents to surface once the lawsuit ended in favor of the Center for Biological Diversity. The American Petroleum Institute believes it will impact oil and gas companies on the coasts if they have to reduce emissions further.

A statement released by the EPA stated: “Protection of the nation’s water quality, including the health of our ocean waters, is among EPA’s highest priorities. EPA is interested in learning more about how to protect our ocean and coastal waters from acidification.”
