REVIVING THE ROCK ...!!!

DEAR XELLOS,,,,

I was siting down the porch of my house...hearing the slow rhythm of raindrop on the veranda...suddenly i came through voice of AXL singing "sweet child of mine "...i ran down the living room and i was transfixed to see...guitar solo by SLASH ...damn i got goosebumps..seeing how he played those awesome riffs ...it jus struck me to write something on rock ...ROCK ....gosh thrs so much to write btw ..whr to start ...ohk ...it all started with SWING MUSIC....ROCK in its earlist time can be described as blues wid electric guitars..rocabilly emrged in 1950 wid mixture of rock and roll..jazz...blues...etc..!!...and the major pioneers were ELVIS PRESLY (yeah the man wid goggles who like to swing his leg all through the song ....)..and BILL HALEY ..

Then in 1960's ...came BEATLE one of the influential rock bands.....after beatlemania ..thr came PHYCHEDELIC ROCK .....such as PINK FLOYD..JIMMI HENDRIX...ROLLING STONES...wid drug influened and hypnotic lyrics....( specially talkin abt this 1..."come here boy now have a cigar u wanna go high...."..lol...thts rock humor..)..ohk sorry ..i knw i hav no sense of humor....lol..then came PROGRESSIVE ROCK ...characterized by experimentation ..on electrric guitar ,..bass...etc...it ws made popular by pink floyd .and many othr such bands...

amidst all this another band BLACK SABBATH ..(YEAH ...OZZY OSBORNE...).....popularized '.....METAL...ROCK(thick and highly amplified form of rock ) "..world jus started to realize power of rock it had on society ..!!

In 1970's after vietnam war thr came a band...LED ZAPPELIN became popular ....thr perfect blend of hard rock and blues made them one of the best hard rock group of all time ..!!....( i stilll litsen to thr songs like stairways to heaven ..i mean ...JIMMY PAGE is a guitar god ..truly ..)..some other successful bands were THE EAGLES...DAVID BOWIE AND THE QUEEN ....later world saw emergence of PUNK ROCK ..its founding father was THE RAMONES...it was a biriyani of anarchism ...teenage rage and rock and roll ....CLASH was another such punk band..

1980's was a golden period for worls rock scene in my opinion.. .cuz its gave us hell of bands......with big hair... .and tight pants ..some of them are AC/DC...( HIGHWAY TO HELL .....:))...).,..GUNS AND ROSES ..(SLASH ....:))..).,,.AEROSMITH.,,..IRON MAIDEN..,,.MEGADEATH ..,,.METALLICA.,,,VAN HALEN AND BONJOVI ..they created superb ballads..with resplendent guitar solos.....

INDIE/ALTERNATIVE ROCK began to emerge in late 1980's...wid bands like U2....R.E.M....THE CURE....SMITHS AND SONIC YOUTH ..

in 1990'S CAME ERA OF GRUNGE and alternative rock. GRUNGE originated in seatle (usa)....mainly described with ...strong guitar riffs with distortion..and feedback ...which enlightened teenage angst ..!!...NIRVANA ws the most popular band of this genre ..others were ..!...PEARLS JAM...ALICE IN CHAINS..DOORS...AND..JANE'S ADDICTION ..!!

Since the year 2000 many rock sub genre has evolved..such as emo rock .(sub genre of punk rock ..)..which has emotional lyrics wid hardcore guitar overtone ....TAKING BACK SUNDAY...SENSES FALL AND DASHBOARD ARE SOME EMO BANDS..

METAL has reached its new exteme..with new sub genre as DEATH METAL ...THRASH METAL ..AND BLACK METAL ..which is more loud aggressive and fast ...with some awesome bands like ..SLIPKNOT...KORN...AS I LAY DYING ..CANNIBAL CORPSE..AND LAMB OF GOD ..!!

ALTERNATIVE ROCK ..(OR INDIE ROCK )..reached its heights wid bans like RED HOT CHILI PEPERS..INCUBUS...FOO FIGHTERS ..COLDPLAY..... CHEVELLE

The most latest genre of metal is NU METAL ..with same basic metal grounds they hav rap and sampling added down the songs with new progressive tempos the nu metal gnere is often refered as new generaration of rock ...LINKIN PARK ..DEFTONES..LIMP BIZKIT ..are some famous bands...

I can go on explaining intricacies of rock and bands but i stop here ..(overdose ho gaya na,,,,:D)..

rock in itself means freadom ..lassaize fair...democracy in itself ..u havn't hav to be punk or weirdo to listen rock ...feel it and keep rocking on ....

First of all HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY TO ALL OF U ....!!!..GOD HAIL INDIA ! ...its been 60 years of india as a republic and 60 days last tym i hav posted sumthing on the blog !!! awwww...my bad..As if there are so less readers on my blog ...if there are actually i am really very sorry i havn't written regularly these days !

As i have titled my pic ...WAY BACK HOME its really like a homecoming for me to write on the blog again it fells like home .. Today i am wide open ...out of 140 words maze on twitterati.....or facebook ( seriously facebook is like hotel california ...u can check out any time u like but you can never leave ).....hmmm,

I am really bad in making excuses so i will not try to make one on my absense but try to compensate for that ..by blogging regularly ...

Dear all,

If i tell you ...do you wanna cure cancer , Parkinson or Alzheimer?...what would be your answer ?........i guess a emphatic YES and if i tell you that .....i could possibly tell you the way by which you can help ..finding a cure... Surprised..Well not be.While i was surfing net i came across FOLDING@HOME . Basically protein fold in our body ..if the folding goes wrong we come accross numerous diseases,,, STANFORD UNIVERSITY has created software to connect many computers to one mega Super Computer through internet ...so that by distributed computing ..they could simulate protein folding...to see what actually goes wrong.

Now.. how can u help ?do ..u have a PC,PS3 Or a MAC ?( literally i ask too many questions ..lol)

you just need to download the software from HERE ...and run it so that you can connect to the bandwidth in which millions of people are working now ....all types of PC'S and MAC'S can process different kinds of information very well , especially gaming rigs with high end GRAPHIC CARDS / and those with dual core and quad core processors ....ufff i sounded very mechanical...but for a noble cause where you all can contribute ...NOW WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU ?..( hmm read my mind and quickly download the software..lol)

Dear Xellos ,

Since blogger’s who are younger than me, don’t seem to exist(put your hands up if you are one) , as a handsome young thing, I want a gift from all my reader’s. Just remember to cross check and make sure you don’t get me the same thing as someone else(you are welcome to discuss the gift in my comment section)

And well all you adults out there(for 24 hrs I am kid), Don’t worry you are still a child, or at least your mom will tell you so. If not you’re a child at heart, you can start crying when someone scolds you. So Happy Children’s Day.

And well it’s supposed to be Nehru’s birthday let’s not forget. So is the CongressGovernment going to give gifts and hold a party for the entire nation? Why not? Make sweets for the entire nation, maybe for once we all can eat sweets, when there is no food? See you give sweets today and when the kids grow up they will vote for you. That is effective bribing or one for the future.

Quite crude, I guess. But don’t worry, once Rahul become’s our CM, we will have a Teenagers’ day. Yay! Not the one where we can’t sing our national song but play some hard grunge sort of judas preist (really bad bad me). But let us not be mistaken, we should have a common language by then. I am planning to invent one.

YouTube Monetizing Over A Billion Video Views A Week

Sorry i was not making posts kinda buzy , now i am back .......i opened you tube today in morning and found its making 1 billion hits a week ...so heres a post for tht :))))

YouTube is on the path to profitability in the “not-too-distant future,” Google reiterated today during its third quarter earnings call. And while that may sounds all well and good, they actually had some more specific impressive numbers to back it up.

One is that YouTube is now monetizing over a billion video views a week. Last week, YouTube announced that it was serving over 1 billion video views a day, so if you do the math there, it means that YouTube is monetizing one every seven video views.

The company also noted that 90% of the top 50 advertisers according to AdAge have now run ads on YouTube. And of its homepage ad inventory, 90% of it sold out for the quarter in the U.S., with lower, but still impressive sale rates for the rest of the world. Google also noted that YouTube was just starting to unleash its pre-roll inventory and let its salesforce have a go at selling that to advertisers, which should bring in more money.

And with Warner Music Group back in the mix, they now have the four major music labels playing ball again. As a one-stop shop for many music videos, YouTube will also be able to sell ads against those, as well as make some money off of affiliate sales from iTunes and Amazon’s MP3 store.

Earlier this month, CNET uncovered that Google CEO Eric Schmidt admitted under oath that the company paid a $1 billion premium when it bought YouTube in 2006 (for $1.65 billion). The thought was always that the site was growing so quickly that they would scoop it up and figure out how to monetize it later. It would appear that they’re getting close to doing just that — albeit three years later.

When i opened Google this morning i saw an image of Mahatma Gandhi along with Google’s logo. As today is 2nd october and today is Gandhi Jayanti,i.e Gandhi’s Birthday.

Various: New data and images from flybys of the Moon by the Cassini, the US Deep Impactspacecraft, and a NASA instrument on India's Chandrayaan-1 orbiter provide compelling evidence of traces of water on the Moon. The results were published in Science magazine.

Tentative clues for the existence of water ice on the Moon have existed for sometime. Faith Vilas, director of the Multiple Mirror Telescope in Arizona saw phyllosilicates—minerals formed through heat and water—back in 1999 when the Galileo spacecraft flew by the Moon, but until recently could not get her research accepted for publication.

Both the Clementine and Lunar Prospector spacecrafts saw some hints of hydrogen molecules some years ago. But it was new data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, (LRO) which wasdiscussed at a conference last week that gave hints that conditions would be ripe for water ice.

The LRO's Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment, which measured the temperature of the lunar surface, discovered that some of the polar craters contain some of the lowest temperatures in the solar system, even colder than the surface of Pluto. These measurement were proof that the Moon has permanently dark and extremely cold places said science team member Ashwin Vasavadafrom NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California at the conference.

Data from the LRO's Lunar Exploration Neutron Detectordidn't show many neutrons inside the craters but surprisingly showed evidence of ice outside of the craters says University of Arizona astronomer William Boynton. "It actually could be better (for exploration) because getting down inside those craters is very difficult," he adds.

According to the results published in Science, concentrations in sunlit soil might average about one liter per ton of lunar material. That water doesn’t remain on the Moon, but comes and goes each lunar day.

In contrast, water molecules bound to phosphate minerals within volcanic rocks—material that formed well beneath the lunar surface—date back several billion years, says Francis McCubbin of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington DC A fourth, unpublished study led by McCubbin finds a surprisingly high abundance of this interior water, which may shed new light on how the Moon formed.

"It’s so startling because it’s so pervasive," said Lawrence A. Taylor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a co-author of one of the papers that analyzed data from a NASA instrument aboard India’s Chandrayyaan-1 satellite. "It’s like somebody painted the globe," he told the New York Times.

Carle Pieters, of Brown University, who led the Chandrayaan-1 observation team, said: "When we say ‘water on the moon’, we are not talking about lakes, oceans or even puddles. Water on the moon means molecules of water and hydroxyl that interact with molecules of rock and dust specifically in the top millimeters of the moon’s surface," she told the London Times.

The discovery of more evidence for water on the Moon is spurring excitement over its implications for future space exploration says space.com's Leonard David.

"If ice is found we have to further explore it with landers, rovers, coring drills to assess its distribution and composition," explained Bernard Foing, the European Space Agency (ESA) project scientist for the now defunct ESA SMART-1 lunar orbiter. He is also the director of theInternational Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG).
Following that appraisal, Foing said that the next task is to organize how ice could be partly exploited on the spot in some areas to ease the next steps of human exploration towards an international lunar base.

Argh! Laughter Tracks!

DEAR XELLOS ,

Am I the only one who finds laughter tracks in so-called 'comedy shows' irritating? Wherever you look, there are TV shows masquerading as laugh riots when they actually aren't. And why are they considered to be comedy? Simply because they have a laughter track. The ol' faithful Wikipedia points out...

It was believed that the absence of guffaws meant American viewers could not tell if the particular show was indeed a comedy.

...which is then followed by a list of TV shows that got their asses kicked for not including laughter tracks. Seriously? Are our American brothers that dumb that they can't recognize comedy without having crutches to guide them when to laugh?

So why did I snap now? The last ~~straw~~ 'joke' that broke the ~~camel's~~ my back was this show they're showing on Disney Channel called Home Improvement. Apparently, "in the 1990s, it was one of the most watched sitcoms, winning many awards". Should have a reasonable amount of comedy, right? So I decided to watch one episode. Here's a 'joke' from the show, in its entirety:

My mother-in-law is coming next week. [laughter track with wild hoots of laughter]

And then, every second sentence there's canned laughter, regardless of whether any sane guy would call it a joke or not. Adding a laughter track does not make it a comedy show. It makes it a lame attempt at comedy, but not comedy. You know which other show on Disney Channel is guilty of the same crime? The Hannah Montana Show, featuring SnakeMonster.

It's a show which revolves around one and only one 'joke' - Billy Ray Cyrus calling out to "mah-lee ". But when it comes to not making any sense at all, having no jokes, and stuffing canned laughter into every second of an episode, nothing beats......F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Every second of the show is carpet-bombed with canned laughter. And that's still okay, if there are any jokes. That 'if' is never fulfilled as the canned laughter is played out even in normal conversational dialogue. Maybe the cornerstone of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.'s success lies in the fact that Americans are too dumb to recognize what's comedy, so when a show comes along where lots of laughter is pre-included, they think it's a very funny show. In overseas territories people might laugh along assuming there must be some pun in English they didn't get.

I know I must be the odd-one-out in not 'liking' F.R.I.E.N.D.S., but I also feel that shows which include laugh tracks are trying to insult the intelligence of the audience. Here's a clip from the South Park episode Jakovasaurs parodying sitcoms with nonsensical laughter tracks:

today a ma'am came to take our clas , and she inspired me to put up a poem on nature , i had tresure this poem long ago i just sreached it in my memory lane found it and here is the poem :

No more the rustling in the reeds
where finches shout out from the trees
as sunlight gleams on flashing wings
and yellow feathers drift like leaves;

Where grass nests swing
teasing muddied streams below;
and dipping branches brush the froth-foamed
earth-browned water’s bubbling flow.

Is there a place today ,
where branches meet in tunnelled shade
and close by on the shaded banks
the long-legged crane and water-fowl
print cross-hatched patterns on the sand.

For Nature was improved upon;
and altered till the wilds were gone
No mountain springs or inland streams;
but heated pools and cultured zoos;
with neatly labelled bars and cells;
all individual private hells.

Yes, Nature’s been cramped and computed
Her voice will be muted for decades to come.
She’s been catalogued and classified,
corrected and defined
homogenised and purified,
amended and refined.

Gusts of progress everywhere
Have blasted through the land

ISRO Launches A Competitor To Google Earth

The common man can now view sharper pictures of any part of the world on their personal computer using satellite images with ISRO today unveiling 'Bhuvan', its version of Google Earth. Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan launched the beta version of the geoportal www.bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in at a day-long workshop of the Astronautical Society of India on "21st Century Challenges in Space -- Indian Context."

The new web-based tool allows users to have a closer look at any part of the subcontinent barring sensitive locations such as military and nuclear installations. The degree of resolution showcased is based on points of interest and popularity, but most of the Indian terrain is covered upto at least six meters of resolution with the least spatial resolution being 55 meters, an ISRO official said.

So, now ISRO joins the fray of 3D map software - joining the likes of Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth (bet you didn't know this one). For a long time, India's ISRO has been a market leader in remote sensing technologies (mapping the earth using satellites), but it dropped the ball a few years back whencommercial companies such as DigitalGlobe and GeoEye (with itspath-breaking IKONOS earth observation satellite) started offering higher resolution imagery than what ISRO could offer. With launches of new satellites in the CARTOSAT series, ISRO is back in the fight. Bhuvan offers a highest of 6m resolution pictures, which means ISRO is holding back the highest quality imagery it can provide. Quite possibly, Bhuvan is a marketing tool to show potential customers of ISRO's technical capabilities. But hey, 6m is still a lot better than Google Earth! Moreover, Google Earth images are usually a few years old; given that CARTOSATs are new, ISRO's Bhuvanwould be providing more up-to-date images.

On 23rd August 2009, Pyra Labs launched its Blogger.com blogging service. The term ‘blog’ had been used earlier as ‘weblog’ by John Barger, and then shortened to ‘blog’ by Peter Merholz – but the guy to whom credit goes for taking blogging mainstream is Pyra Labs founder Evan Williams. Ev, as he is known, has now moved on to founding an equally game-changing service called Twitter.

Blogger.com was the service which truly revolutionized the concept of web publishing and brought power to the people. Before that, you would have to hand code everything using HTML, which put a barrier on who could be elite ones publishing on the Web. Either that, or it was posting articles on mailing lists / Usenet groups. Blogger.com was eventually acquired by Google in February 2003 and has been their property since. Read a short story on Blogger’s here, and a full report with many links to commentary by prominent bloggers (in 2003) on the Google acquisition here.

Blogging brought about a democratization of media on scale never seen before in the history of the Web. By lowering the entry barriers to publishing, you do get a lot of spam blogs, abandoned blogs, p0orLY wrITTeN BlOgs – but you also got an avenue for content which was niche enough not to get attention from mainstream media. It became a rallying point for spreading thoughts and ideas which often lead to making some impact.

So let’s say you still haven’t joined the blogging bandwagon and want to jump on-board now. Getting started is easy – go to Blogger.com and sign up for a free account. That’s it! You’ll get a word processor like editor where you can type in content, add links / pictures / videos, etc. Try to write unique content.

Above all, write for the love of writing. Don’t even think of making money out of it when you start off. Everything else – ads, sponsored posts – are incidental. Get good content out, and people will come to read it eventually. Remember that there are lots of blogs out there, so if you get a trickle of visitors in the first few months it’s easy to lose motivation. Happens with a lot of people that they start blogging, first six months or say they get hardly any visitors a day – then they give up. Don’t. If you really feel you’ll get demotivated by not enough people reading your content.

You need not necessarily have to blog for other, i.e., a public blog. You can set up private blogs which only you or people you invite can read. This can a replacement for diaries – you don’t even need to post daily. Or you could use your blog to publish creative writings – your poems, short stories, drawings, artwork, or even publishing a novel online. Yes, there have been blogs which went to be published as book – they are called ‘blooks‘. Sidin, the current editor at Mint, got his first job after his blogs postings were noticed.

Even if you have a public blog, it’s a nice archive of how you have changed over the years. So then, Shah Rukh Khan gets stopped at for further questioning at Newark airport and the rabble-rabble crowd is going to held demonstations outside the parliment Me? I find the situation delightfully hilarious, in a ironic sort of way. You see, SRK had gone to the US of A to promote his new movie My Name Is Khan– and here's the irony – it’s about racial profiling of Muslims after the 9/11 attacks. Maybe I wouldn’t have found it hilarious if it happened to me, but since it hasn’t I’ll can have a laugh.

You see, most of the outrage is centered around “INDIANS ARE BEING RACIALLY DISCRIMINATED AGAINST! BUY BARACK OBAMA POSTERS FOR Rs 100 ONLY AND BURN IT!”. Sorry to disappoint you guys but Transporation Security Administration has made some truly astounding errors earlier too. SRK isn’t the first one to be stopped because his name featured on the watchlist either – earlier, a five year old kid called Matthew Gardner was prevented from flying too. The same link (gracias, Cracked.com) details other incidents – like a guy called David Nelson being stopped too, and someone else who was handicapped and her crutches were snatched away because they needed to be inspected.

‘Shah Rukh Khan’ being on the watchlist doesn’t mean that the Shah Rukh Khan was being ‘targetted’ – it simply means that quite possibly there’s a suspected criminal with the same name whom the authorities are looking out for. The issue is not of targeting but that of idiots who slavishly follow rules taking things a bit too far.

While at this point you would love to hear a redneck joke or two along the lines of “haha Americans are so dumb”, lemme remind you that security staff anywherearound the world can be dumb when it comes to taking rulebook interpretations too far. I don’t understand why HT decided to headline this story as ‘Child abuse by CISF…’ (what’s described is not child abuse); anyway, the story is about how CISF made a 10-year old kid stand outside a security checkpoint for over an hour because he didn’t follow the security drill.

Must we protest outside the Parliament?

Whats Is It?
Koobface is a virus that mainly attacks facebook, but has been know to attack sites like Myspace, Twitter, Friendster, Hi5, and Bebo. When the virus gets into the users computer it will start sending itself to other users form your Facbook or other social networking site account you use. After doing this, the worm will then steal credit cards, bank acocunts, and other sensitive data. If you look at koob face you'll see facebook, koob is book backwords, and the face part is easy.
How Does It Spread?
The main question is "How does it spread?" The worm spreads itself by sending messages from the users account to all their friends. The message usually includes a subject like, "You look stupid in this vid" or "I got you a camera". The link to the video will then bring you to a third party site and it will say you need to update to the latest Adobe Flash Player, and it will ask you to download it, most people will without thinking. Once the worm is installed its called to action.

How Do I Remove It?
The hardest part about Koobface is that it is a polymorphism worm. This means that it will keep changing itself to stay undetected. The best way to remove is use a updated malware cleaner. If you go to the following, there are scanners recommended by Facebook to scan for this worm or any other virus online. This page can be found here.
If you don't want to use a automated program that will remove it for you, even though this is highly recommended, follow these steps.
To remove it manually follow these steps:
1. Click start on the taskbar, and then click "My Computer."
2. Hit F3 and select "All Files and Folders and search "Koobface."
3. Copy the file path of Koobface.
4. Open "Task Manager" this can be done by eithering holding Ctrl+Alt+Del or clicking "Start" and then "Run" and type "taskmgr.exe"
5. You must disable Koobface's process first.
6. Next you must disable the other following processes
1. %SYSTEMROOT%\bolivar28.exe
2. bolivar28.exe
3. che07.exe
4. %WinDir%\system32\nScan\ecls.exe
5. %WinDir%\system32\nScan\ekrn.exe

Now that this is done, it is time to go into the registry and remove this worm.
1. Click "Start" "Run" and type "Regedit" ( very common enough )
2. Locate and delete these regestry files

Now we must unregister these dll files in Command Prompt.
1. Click "Start", "Run", and type "cmd"
2. Now locate and the follwing dll files by typing dir and then the following:

2. %WinDir%\system32\nScan\ekrnEpfw.dll
3. %WinDir%\system32\nScan\ekrnEmon.dll
4. %WinDir%\system32\splm\lmfunit32.dll
5. %WinDir%\system32\splm\kbdsapi.dll
6. %WinDir%\system32\nScan\ekrnAmon.dll
7. %WinDir%\system32\splm\mcaserv32.dll
now that you have the paths for those now we can change it type "cd" then a space and type the dll path for all of those, and hit eneter and now unregister them.
Now unregister each and by using the following format "path+'regsvr32/u'+dll name"
Thats it!, I hope you use a anti-malware software because doing this can harm your computer.

We all knw what is independence , what pt. nehru said now i want to talk something inportant today "THE WISH LIST OF INDIA ON ITS BIRTHDAY "

On 15th August 2009, India enters into its 63rd year of freedom. India has made rapid progress in the last few years to become one of the leading nations of the world. But like any other country, there are a few shortcomings. Here is a wishlist which India would be hoping on its Birthday!!

1. Speedier Judicial Processes: The judicial machinery in India is one of the fairest legal systems across the globe. But time and again, we wonder if it is quick enough. The long drawn court battles after the controversial murders of Nitish Katara, Professor Sabharwal, Jessica Lall and Priyadarshini Mattoo are examples of these long delays. It is time to think about fast track courts, more efficient legal procedures which go beyond politics and business interests. The 'Lok Adalats' is a small step too, we should aspire to have more speed in the procedures and do our bit for the society.

2. Accountability of Our Chosen Representatives: India has seen numerous multi crore scandals in the recent past, right from the Hawala Scandal to the very famous Fodder Scam. Time and again the integrity of the MPs have been questioned. Its high time that such criminals are barred from contesting elections.

3. An end to moral policing: Even 62 years after independence, people have a rigid mind. There is little scope for inculcation of modern ideas. There is an increasing amount of tolerance and people have assumed the roles of guardians of values and morals. There should be breathing space for people to exercise their opinion. Abolition of section 377 is a step forward towards a 'free India'.

4. Improved Heathcare Setup: Health Care in India can be traced back nearly 3500 years and is seen to be growing rapidly. Our very own Ayurveda and yoga techniques are fast becoming a fad across the globe. But the basic questions remain. The recent swine flu deaths give rise to the question of how ready we are to face the outbreak of an epidemic. The scramble for beds and testing kits proves that we need to be more geared up for health infrastructure.

5. Right to Education: The Parliament recently passed the Right to Education bill, but the real challenge would be face during its implementation. Hopefully, the money involved in this process would reach the right channels.

6. Dynamic Leaders: With the two top Contendors of the Prime Minister in the recently concluded General Elections being 77 and 81 years old respectively, India surely needs some Dynamics in the politics. The Gandhis, Pilots and Scindias look promising, but are all far from being the right choice currently. In next 5 years, one such leader needs to emerge. Inspiration: Mr. Obama!

7. Bridging of the Urban-Rural Divide: We hear about the need for development to being from the grassroot levels in almost any development schemes we hear. But how far is it implemented? We need to ensure that bridging the urban rural divide should be one of the key areas. For the overall development of the nation this is absolutely essential.

Last but not the least...

8. Empowerment of Youth: The youth, the torchbearers of this nation, is a force to reckon with. They are an educated bunch, savvy and with great mettle. They are ambitious and will go great lengths to attain their dreams. The perfect go getters. The world for them is at their fingertips. Just the right opporunity is needed!

WHICH SEARCH ENGINE IS BEST SUITED FOR U ?

I came across this link on TechCrunch. (Actually, came across it as a retweet of the TechCrunch story by someone I follow on Twitter since I’m not subscribed to that site’s RSS feed.) It’s called the Blind Search Tool. (BTW, the site was made by a Microsoft engineer.) Basically, you search for a term and it shows you three different sets of results in column from three search engines – Google, Yahoo!, and Bing – in a random order (columns are shuffled randomly). Have a look at the search results, and then ‘vote’ for a search engine by click on the button for whichever result set you like best. Blind Search Tool then reveals which set is from which search engine.

To my surprise I found that I almost invariably found Yahoo!’s search results to be the best. But then again, your preferences of what is a ‘good search result’ could be different from mine. What this tool does is that it cuts out all the crap and makes you find out which search engine you really want. I mainly focussed on the top five search results, because quite frankly those are the ones which really matter. Which search engine did you find the best? Leave a comment!

The dust has settled regarding the news that Microsoft is buying out Yahoo!’s search division. In case you haven’t heard, Microsoft’s Bing search engine is going to replace the backend for Yahoo! search for a period of ten years; in return, Yahoo! Search Marketing will handle ad inventory for both the companies on their search properties. Yahoo!’s current CEO Carol Bartz has confirmed that frontend will still be Yahoo!-branded. This switchover will happen sometime in 2010. Details are still not clear on what will happen to services such as Yahoo! BOSS, Yahoo! SearchMonkey, Yahoo! SiteExplorer, etc (. Carol Bartz is taking seemingly good financial decisions for now; I wonder though whether being out of the search engine game for ten years will stunt Yahoo!’s growth a decade later. (I don’t think they’ll sink money into search R&D for the time being.) Unlike Jerry Yang, Carol Bartz’s heart doesn’t bleed purple and gold.

Yahoo! really screwed up under Terry Semel’s leadership. What else could you expect out of a former Hollywood exec? When Jerry Yang came back as CEO, Yahoo! gained back a lot of its technological advantage…but Yahoo! has failed at marketing its products properly. You may disagree on whether you find Yahoo! Search better or Google Search better, but as you’ll see on Blind Search Test, Yahoo! is at least better than Bing. Despite that, Bing traffic grew by leaps and bounds after its launch purely on the foundation of Microsoft’s marketing.

Personally, the only bit I liked about Bing was the preview of the destination page which you get on hovering over a result. The photos on the front page are nice – although nothing you can’t get on Flickr. Oh, and their logo looks as if it was made in Microsoft Paint.

KALAM SAYS THERE IS NO BRAIN DRAIN

This news article in Times of India caught my eye yesterday - former president APJ Abdul Kalam said that there's no brain drain and we produce three million graduates a year. You can read up the article for the exact quote he gave. He goes on to say that out of this so-called huge pool of students that India is producing if 10% leave the country, then it's no big deal.

I'm a bit surprised the former president, who is known for the interest he takes in the education of youth, said this. He, of all people, should realize that even if it's just 10% of people going abroad, they might be some of the brains that we have! It is not uncommon for engineering graduates from top Indian universities to go abroad after their graduation for post-graduate studies. At one level, it's a testament to the fact that even we all admit that their universities are better than ours - otherwise they'd all be doing post-graduation from India. Anyway, the point is that even if numerically a lower number of people are leaving for foreign shores, the possibility remains that they could be some of the best people we have. Looking the other way won't help.

The figure of three million undergraduates is inflated. Not inflated per se, but inflated in the sense that how many of them are employable. There is no dearth of colleges in India, but there is a major dearth of quality colleges in India. Just the IITs - news ones included - have around 4000 seats on offer for general category students. Along with a few other institutes such as BITS with all its branches, and the top fewNITs, we probably have around 20000 quality seats. In the larger scale of things, that's a ridiculously small number when seen in the context of number of students passing out from high school. Our country, after all, has a significant chunk of its population as a part of the 18-25 years of age bracket.

Kapil Sibal has been bringing around quite a few changes as the Union HRD minister. New varsities are being set up, existing collegues r diversifying its range of subjects. The Big Thing on the horizon is foreign direct investment in education - which would allow top foreign universities, say even Harvard, MIT or Oxford - to set up shop in India.Let's hope things

Sorry for a late post i was down with mtnl authorities ,but thats another story

now back to topic ,

Like all these years, I got a rakhi ( sorry many rakhi to be true ). Not much pomp involved since it was couriered from my 18 and 20-year-old cousins (name not to be enclosed for viewer discreation) in balasore. . . I gifted her a teddy bear. (There’s and interesting story behind how these stuffed toys came to be known as ‘teddy bears’.)

I was reminded today of an anecdote from Derek O’Brien’s First Book of 1000 Questions. (Probably the only sensible quiz book he has written so far; sadly, also a book which is out of print.) In it, Derek O’Brien speaks on how he used to get jealous when his classmates turned up at school with multiple rakhis dotting their wrist; he wondered whether they actually had those many sisters or a few were being extra generous. To this day, the four O’Brien brothers haven’t got a rakhi and loving it. Well, I’m no longer in a similar predicament. Dang, there goes my freedom.

Nowadays of course a lot of rakhis are exchanged between people who aren’t blood relations. Doofenschmirtz Evil Incorporated Archies Inc, Cadbury’s and other assorted greedy marketing types are quite happy with this development. Exchanging rakhis beyond non-blood relations is basically a coded message from a girl to guy (who’s probably hitting on the girl, unsuccessfully) saying “Dude, you can talk to me, but anything more than that I’ll kick you squaw in the nuts.” (Thankfully, I never got one of those in school. )hopefully

The Beeb has a factfile on Raksha Bandhan. It informs that the protection offered by a rakhi is valid for one year. I’m sure enterprising Indian telco companies will work out a deal with some temple boards to offer lifetime validity offers. Hmm, what other nuggets does the Beeb have to tell us? Oh, yes – “Women tie rakhis around the wrists of the prime minister”. That’s new. Wikipedia tells us that Yama blesses immortality ^{[citation needed]} on anyone who gets a rakhi. Son of a gun seems to have gone back on his promise. Also, there’s a link to a page on ‘scientific details of raksha bandhan‘. Do check it out. Hilarious shit, literally. I’m all for symbolism, but religion often tries to pull bunny rabbits out of a hat when it shouldn’t even try.

But hey, whatever be the ’science’ behind all this, I look forward to meeting my grown up sisters again some day. (not to forget i have my lil sis at my home but i shouldn't make a post on her , she'll screw me up )

PS – If you feel offended and want to demand an apology from me (over my remarks on ’scientific-ness of this festival), please buy this book and this book before you do so.

Faster-than-light 'tachyons' might be impossible after all

Faster-than-light particles, or "tachyons", may be fundamentally impossible, according to two mathematical physicists. If they're right, their new theory would also imply that time – seemingly one of the most fundamental facets of nature – is no more than a mirage.

Although it is commonly believed that Einstein's theory of relativity says nothing can go faster than light, that is not quite true. Relativity does forbid ordinary matter from ever reaching the speed of light, because it would require infinite energy.

But the theory does not rule out a realm of particles that can only travel faster than light. Named "tachyons" by physicists in the 1960s, these subatomic speedsters would actually need an infinite amount of energy to slow down to the crawl of light-speed.

Tachyons crop up as possibilities in several speculative physical theories, such as some versions of string theory. Physicists have searched for their expected signatures. If they are among the high-energy particles that hit Earth from space, tachyons would produce a signal similar to cosmic rays – except that they would reach ground-based detectors ahead of the secondary particles they created in the atmosphere.

No tachyons have ever been detected, however, and now James Wheeler and Joseph Spencer of Utah State University think they know why.

THE MYTH OF REFRESHING THE DESKTOP

The myth of refreshing the desktop

“Do you refresh your desktop?”. Ask this to any Windows user and 99% of them will reply with a “yes”. Of course, there are various needs for refreshing the desktop but the majority of people who do it don’t even know why they are doing it. Refreshing the desktop is perhaps the biggest computer myth among all Windows users.

Every single person I have met does this or at least used to do it. It's not known who first discovered this remarkably useless trick and what he achieved from it, but it just spread. Most new users learn this trick from other new users without caring to know what it does. Some do it devotedly just because others do it, while some others have various weird explanations for it. A few of them assume that it refreshes the RAM, while some others believe that doing it will somehow keep their PC running smooth and easy. I have seen some users obsessed with refreshing the desktop, doing it every 30 seconds or so. They have even learnt the keyboard shortcut - F5 (just to mention, these are the people who never use keyboard shortcuts). They would press the key and wouldn't release it for a long time, sending the desktop into a frenzy of refreshes.

Don't Trust Me,Test it for Yourself

Yes,now how do i prove it.Follow these simple steps-:

Close all programs and windows.
Press Ctrl+alt+del to get the task manager,on the task manager select the performance tab.
Note down initial CPU Usage,it would be should be 0,if you don't have any hidden applications.
Now,keep the task manager open, and press F5(Shortcut for Refresh) continously,did you note the increase in CPU Usage.

What does a desktop refresh actually do?

Refreshing the desktop simply redraws the icons on the desktop. That's it! It doesn't refresh the RAM. It doesn't clean your PC. It doesn't refresh your computer the way it does to you when you wake up from a nap. Refreshing the desktop has absolutely no effect on the working or performance of the computer. So why is the tool there? As I said, refresh is used to re-display or re-arrange the icons on the desktop. Sometimes when you bring some changes to the desktop icons, the change doesn't get reflected instantly. In such cases, refreshing the desktop becomes necessary to bring the change to effect.
ex. You have the desktop icons set to arrange themselves alphabetically on your desktop. When you add a new item to the desktop, this item wouldn't get arranged alphabetically, instead it would appear at the bottom of icon list on the desktop, irrespective of it's name. Now if you refresh the desktop, all the icons would once again get re-arranged alphabetically and the new item would go to it's appropriate position. Refresh has the same function when done in explorer.

So, if you are in the habit of refreshing the desktop, stop it. You are just wasting your time and effort. And the next time you see a person doing it, don't forget to explain to him the futility of this action.

MAD AD OR MISSING THE POINT

There’s this ad by Eveready Ultima batteries which has been doing the rounds lately on television. See it if you haven’t already below (most slots don’t show the whole ad).

I thought of mentioning this ad as a good idea gone terribly wrong. The concept behind the advertisement of using flashlights coupled with time-lapse photography is quite unique. No doubt it must have taken the team behind the ad a lot of time to make too. But come on! You’re selling Eveready batteries, not Duracell! I wonder whether this particular ad will make any impact as such. To understand how cool this ad is, you need to understand the basic concept behind it (time-lapse). If you don’t, I’m sure a viewer will dismiss it as a freakish incident they can’t explain. And that’s just the urban viewer! When you’re selling a mass market product like batteries, there really isn’t much scope of ‘being innovative’.

Clearly an ad done by an agency so much in love with the idea that they forgot what they were selling.
