Greetings from frigid Indy!

I've spent most of the week working on wedding invitation envelopes, and I haven't had much time for playing. Thanks to Jane Royal's blog, I did decide to spend some Christmas money on THIS. I look forward to receiving and playing with it. :) In the meantime, here are two envelopes I did this week.

Both envelopes were done with a Zebra G nib. For the one in the top image, I used Moon Palace Sumi. For the one in the bottom image, I mixed and used Winsor & Newton Designers Gouaches.

Flourish Friday - Procrastination Quote

My kids are back at Purdue University, and so I am back to writing them letters each week. No doubt this quote made them roll their eyes. :) I made the marbled paper at the Round Robin during the 2009 IAMPETH Convention in Nashville. It was an acrylic paint in shaving cream technique. I'm sure you could find an online tutorial for it, if you're interested. I used a Zebra G nib and Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache. I used blue ZIG markers for the envelopes (Brushable, Writer and Wink of Stella).

Flourish Friday - Printer Follow Up

Thanks to all of you that offered advice regarding large format printers. (see this post)

I decided to purchase an Epson R2000. Although I have only made 3 prints thus far, I am very pleased with the results.

Using Photoshop, I added a few more flourishes to my Psalm 100 piece that I started in November. This is one of the prints I've made. It measures 12" x 40", is printed on Arches Text Wove, and is currently hanging on my fridge. :)

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - 80th Birthday Card

I did this piece for my dear Aunt Marilyn who celebrated her 80th birthday this past week.

For the envelope I used McCaffery's brown ink, a Zebra G nib, Derwent Metallic Pencils, and my notes from Heather Held's Artful Flourish class. I used a pointed brush and MicaColor (Sparkling Mica & Pigment Watercolor Paint) for the M and floral border.

I tried a little bit of gilding for my calligraphy guild's holiday card exchange.

I used Instacoll and patent gold leaf.

I sketched a dove and cut it out of bristol board and then embossed the shape onto Stonehenge paper.

My printer arrived! Fortunately, I am blessed with good neighbors, because the FedEx driver delivered it to the wrong house! Unfortunately, my poor elderly neighbor about put her back out dragging this beast up onto her porch and into her home. (She thought maybe her son had used her address for a surprise Christmas gift for one of her grandchildren.) I am going to have to do some rearranging to make room for it, but I can't wait to try it. Thanks again for all your suggestions and advice about printers; it was a great help to me!

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Linda Hirsh

Just before Thanksgiving, I was reading through Julie Wildman's November newsletter for the Chicago Calligraphy Collective. I was stunned to read that Linda Hirsh, a calligrapher in San Diego, had a brain tumor and was in hospice care. She was on my mind all through Thanksgiving, and I made a note to send her a card. Unfortunately, I didn't get it done in time. I was so sad to learn of her passing earlier this week.

The first time I experienced Linda was at the Nashville IAMPETH. I took her "Copperplate Chic" class, and it was a blast! We just bounced from one fun thing to the next. I could just tell that Linda loved anything and everything to do with calligraphy. New techniques and creative ideas just seemed to ooze out of her. She had such flair!

One of the techniques she taught was writing with gouache and Schmincke powder. Mix your gouache in a well (add a drop of gum arabic).

The Schmincke powder is very fine, and Linda suggested covering the top with a piece of nylon (panty hose). Sprinkle the powder on top of the gouache. Then load your pen with a mixing brush. Do NOT mix the powder into the gouache, but just let it rest on top. Then... letter away! I used a Zebra G nib.

I sat in on Linda and Brenda Broadbent's "Something Adventurous" program at IAMPETH this past summer in Phoenix. They were quite the comediennes. Again, Linda's enthusiasm just made me smile. She was such a great ambassador for the lettering arts. I realize many of you knew Linda well, and I'm sure your lives are richer for having called her friend.

Psalm 100 - Giving Thanks

My initial draft of Psalm 100 for Thanksgiving.

The accountant advises to spend as much as I can before year end. (Okay!) I'd like to purchase a wide format printer, so I can start making my own large prints. I've done some preliminary research, but most of the reviews out there are made by and for photographers using photo paper. I'm getting frustrated. Here is my plea: If you are using - or know of - a great wide format printer for making art prints that is currently available on the market (new), would you please let me know? Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Can print at least 13" x 19" (longer would be great!)

2. Uses Pigmented Inks

3. Makes great prints - in both black and color - on watercolor style paper! (Any tips for great paper?)

4. Affordable

I'd appreciate any advice you can offer!

I am thankful for many things, including all my online friends!

I am also giving thanks for my loving husband. Today is Tom's birthday.

I am off to bake my favorite guy a cake!! :)

Flourish Friday - CHAIRish the Children

The Affirmation Chair by Jane Farr

I painted this chair for The Villages "CHAIRish the Children" fundraising auction.

The Villages is a child and family services agency here in Indianapolis. You can read about the good work they are doing by clicking here.

I had never worked on a piece of furniture. The chair arrived unfinished and needing sanding.

I applied 2 coats of white, acrylic paint.

I wanted to create a sunny, vibrant, and happy chair. :)

We're familiar with the "Time Out" chair. (At least my kids are!) Instead of a Time Out Chair to correct negative behavior, I wanted to create an Affirmation Chair to correct negative thoughts. How many of us beat ourselves up with negative thoughts?

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Photos and Lettering on Canvas

I have a feeling that some of the social coupon companies may be out-of-business soon, so I am on a mission to redeem my outstanding coupons as soon as possible. I had a coupon for a 16" x 20" photo on canvas from CafePress. I wanted to use the photo above that I took while visiting Manarola, Italy.

I added my own lettering to the image using Photoshop. I then sent the image off to CafePress. Only afterward did I remember to check the spelling. grrrrr!

Thankfully, just as I thought I would be stuck with my misspelling forever, CafePress contacted me to see if it would be okay to make the canvas slightly larger than the size stated on the coupon. (You bet!) They were very gracious to allow me to correct the lettering and resend the image without any additional charge. I'm really happy with the result.

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Designing a Creativity Award

The Calligraphy Guild of Indiana Members' Show, Busy Pens & Brushes II, is in full swing at the Indianapolis Central Library. I was responsible for creating the Barb Thurston Creativity Award to be presented to the member whose piece best demonstrates thinking outside-of-the-box.

I started by reworking a piece of Arches text with sumi and watercolor. I crumpled it up while it was still wet and then let it dry completely before ironing. (Learned that fun technique from Barb Close!) I lettered "Barb Thurston Creativity Award" with a Zebra G nib and Dr. Martin's Pen White. (Learned the lettering style from Gwen Weaver!)

I wanted to use glass, test tubes to represent how our creative efforts are often times experiments: some work, some don't, but we can learn from the "failures" as well as the successes. I wanted to wrap the test tubes with pieces of lettering, but I needed some other bits and bobs - soooo...I dug into my catchall bin. (Don't we all have them?!)

I placed a spent/used nib inside each test tube, then added either a cork or a wooden cap with glue to seal. I first attached charms and beads to some of the corks before gluing. I wrapped the test tubes with various papers, fabric, and fibers. You may recognize some of the papers from past Flourish Friday posts! :)

I placed a glue dot on each test tube to hold it in place while I stitched the test tube to the Arches using gold thread. I had planned to use jewelers' wire and crimps, but after trying that on the first tube, I switched to thread. Not visible is a flexible piece of board behind the Arches to help give more support.

After I had stitched on all the test tubes, I mounted a length of carpet tape onto the backside of the Arches. Using hot glue to force the issue, I wrapped the Arches around a 3" diameter, battery operated (flameless), candle. I used a candle as the foundation for the award to represent CGI and how each member 's unique creativity can be a source of light and inspiration to others. I used a flameless candle so Tom could sleep at night. :)

I adhered a broad edge nib and a pointed nib in front of Barb's name to finish the piece. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of knowing, or even meeting, Barb. She lost her battle with cancer in 2004. From what I understand, she was a very, creative, "out-of-the-box" artist, and this award was established in her memory. I think that is a pretty special legacy to leave behind.

Merri Kay Mikoryak!

Merri Kay is pictured here with the award in front of her amazing and winning piece.

Each of these birds (and two bats!) were handcarved by Merri Kay's husband, David, and hand painted and lettered by Merri Kay. Merri Kay is also a Certified Zentangle Teacher, so of course some of the bats and birds have been tangled. David made the wonderful tree to give their winged creations a home to roost. Merri Kay and David are launching a new business for their creative efforts, and "Dovetails, LLC" will soon take flight. Congratulations Merri Kay! Congratulations David!

Flourish Friday - Steve Jobs

Jane (Kline) Farr and the Apple II

Our friend, Johnny B. (the Computer Science major), was an Apple guy long before most of us. I'm pretty sure his Apple was the only one in the entire dorm. This was taken in the fall of 1982. I'm not sure what game I was playing, and I'm not sure about that cowboy hat, either! I just remember the Apple was fun. We loved playing on it. That was what Steve Jobs did. He made computers fun. He made technology cool. Johnny B. eventually got the Apple IIe, and then we were addicted to Super Bunny. :)

I also admired Steve Jobs for recognizing and paying tribute to his time studying calligraphy at Reed. The world seems a little less fun and a little less cool today.

I wonder what the average number of Apple products are in the typical college dorm today?

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Poem for Anniversary

Two years ago I did a piece similar to this as an anniversary gift for my husband. (You can see it by clicking here.) A client recently commissioned me to do one for her husband, and as most of you know, I love working white on black!

In the past, I have used a soapstone pencil to line black stock, but I used this Fons & Porter Mechanical Fabric Pencil to line this piece. I purchased the pencil from Paper & Ink Arts while at the IAMPETH convention. The last day of the convention, Paper & Ink reduced the prices on everything in the store.....

....so I also purchased this rolling ruler (Parallel Glider) that I had seen Jake Weidmann use during the IAMPETH round robin.

It made lining the paper a breeze. The tip of the fabric pencil fits into the holes of the rolling ruler and made marking the vertical, side margins easy as well.

I used Dr. Martin's Pen White and a Zebra G nib. Once finished and dry, the pencils lines were erased with a Factis Black eraser. The client loved the piece and so did her husband! :)

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - For Katrina's Sun-Dial

Is it Friday already?! I am meeting myself coming and going this week, so for today's Flourish Friday I am showing a piece I did for an exchange in 2007. I chose this particular piece because I feel the poetry of Henry Van Dyke may have special significance to a few of you this week. I hope you like it.

I usually keep notes of the media, nibs, process, and techniques I have used for client work. Unfortunately, I didn't do that for this exchange piece. It's too bad, because I like the background and would like to try it again. I can figure out how I did most of it, but the jagged edge of the background has me stumped. (Note to self: always take notes!) :)

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Bible Verse Commission

Just a few photos from a commission I did this week. The client is giving it as a birthday gift to her mother. It's a passage of scripture from Philippians 2.

I did the lettering with Moon Palace Sumi and a Zebra G nib. This is a pointed pen variation that I created, and I call it "Whimsical."

Flourish Friday - Calligraphy Practice

The first evening of the 2011 IAMPETH convention, we were treated to a viewing of the Horace Healey Collection. (You can read more about the collection by clicking HERE.) There was one particular alphabet that really caught my eye with its over-the-top but gorgeous flourishes. I enjoy trying to figure out how these letters were constructed. I spent some time yesterday playing with the letter M. Not an easy thing. I tried it on graph paper first, not the best paper... or was it the nib....or was it the ink? After changing paper, then nib, then ink, then paper again, and then nib again... I figured it was Finger-Movement-Only-Death-Grip-Jane that was the problem. :)

As it is, this M makes no sense if you want to have lower case letters following it, but I think the original is just so beautiful. You should go see it. I hope the following link to The University of Scranton Special Collections works:

Calligraphy Flourish Friday - Santa Croce Design

Happy Flourish Friday everyone!

After viewing Jan Hurst's lovely photos of her vacation to France here, I remembered that I had taken some photos in the Santa Croce church in Florence. While all the other tourists were taking photos of the incredible paintings in the church, I was patiently waiting for people to move their feet in order to take photos of the floor. :)

I made a tracing of one of my photos, put it under my layout paper, and used my light table. I used a Zebra G nib and Moon Palace sumi. (Only because that is what I already had out on my table.)

Just as I passed the halfway point, it dawned on me that Harvest Crittenden had taught us how to copy and flip designs in her Photoshop for Calligraphers online course.

So I did that. I wish I had thought of doing that before I crossed the halfway point. As you can see, I needed to go in and erase the areas that overlapped and were misaligned.

I cleaned up the overlapping areas in Photoshop. I didn't draw the oval. I added it in Photoshop which was a process Harvest also taught in her course. I then filled in my flourishing with the same black color as the oval. However, I think I like the look of the original penwork better, so I think I will go back and change the color of the oval to match the penwork.

I think one of the most important things one can do to foster creativity is to observe your surroundings.

Look around.

Take notice.

Find a way to incorporate your observations into your artwork.

Flourish Friday - Fun Technique

Rachel and Matthew started classes at Purdue University this past Monday. I think I've shared before that I try to write to them each week while they are at school. I enjoy trying new techniques on their envelopes.

At IAMPETH, Brenda Broadbent and Linda Hirsh shared a very cool technique using a black Glaze pen. It so happens this past Saturday the Calligraphy Guild of Indiana celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a picnic. Each member that attended received a goody bag which included a black Glaze pen. (Insert Happy Dance.)

The Glaze pens have this little protective bulb on the end which must be removed before using the pen.

Brenda and Linda demonstrated using the black Glaze pen on black paper. They showed the technique using elaborate Zentangle designs, but I just did some basic block letters filled with simple designs.

Once the Glaze pen lettering has dried, you go back in with colored pencils. I used Prismacolor pencils. The marks from the Glaze pen are raised, giving an embossed look.

I still thought the lettering needed something. I went back in with a white Uniball Signo pen and added drop shadows to help the letters pop a bit more. (I made copies of one of my old Zentangles to put on the kids' cards.) Glaze pen on dark paper = Fun stuff. :)

You've probably heard that Brenda Broadbent is selling Paper & Ink Arts to Al Allen of Durable Supply Co. / Marker Supply Co. I know Brenda has been looking for the right buyer for her company for a looooong time. I wish both Brenda and the Allen family the very best for a smooth and orderly transition.

Calligraphy Monogram Design - Flourish Friday

Happy Friday everyone!

Another class I took at IAMPETH was Michael Sull's Monogram Design.

Michael taught us to use tracing paper and different colored pencils when designing monograms. For a personal monogram, he had us start with sketching the initial of the first name using one color of pencil.

We then used a second piece of tracing paper, layering it on top of the first. Using a different colored pencil, we sketched the middle initial all the while trying not to get too much spaghetti going on in the design.

We then layered a third piece of tracing paper over the first two in order to begin working on the last initial. (I only had two colored pencils with me.) :)

I really like the F, but I wasn't thrilled with the spacing between the J and A. I thought they were too close to each other.

This is a little better....hmmm...maybe too much spacing now. Also, I think the top of my J needs to be higher. What kind of wacko would want to spend hours playing around with 3 letters?!! umm... ME!! :)

At home, I practiced with pen and ink. I used a Zebra G nib and McCaffrey's black ink. I practiced at various sizes. Let me tell you, it's much easier with a pencil - for me at least. I really enjoyed the class. Michael also taught us how to do family monograms. In a family monogram, the initial of the last name is in the center and is usually a bit larger than the first initials of the wife and husband. Traditionally, the wife's initial goes to the left of the last name initial and the husband's goes to the right.

Thank you all for your kind and caring comments and private emails last week. It is nice to know I wasn't the only one that was feeling overwhelmed. Hello friends.

Here is a quick piece done in Photoshop. (Wow! Did I just say that?) I borrowed parts from a couple of existing pieces. This verse is a strong and comforting reminder to me.

We packed and moved Rachel and Matt up to Purdue yesterday. The summer went by so fast. Matt is there to stay. Rach came back, but only for the weekend. Other areas of my life seem disorganized. My studio is in chaos right now with several different things going on. I like things neat and orderly in my life, so I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

....but this I know

God is for me.

Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed today too.
