KEY WEST, FL: The “One Human Family considers Bullying Prevention” site is a project sponsored by the Knowles House Historic Key West bed and breakfast and co-sponsored by Frangipani Gallery. The purpose of this site is to call attention to the issue of bullying and the serious problems reflected in our schools.

“One Human Family” is the official motto of Key West. Our motto supports acceptance and diversity and means that “all people everywhere are entitled at birth to equal rights, dignity and respect; and lives that are free from prejudice, discrimination, harassment or violence.”

The beautiful island of Key West is one of the most diverse, worldly and accepting communities in the United States. Embracing the slogan of “One Human Family” only seems fitting on this secluded island that has rich cultural traditions that make everyone feel welcome and at home.

Recently there was a troubling article in our local paper from a mother informing the editor about bullying incidents her son has experienced for being openly gay at his high school.

The mother of the 17-year-old student told reporter that the school administrators are “just trying to make it go away, try and make it less than what it was. At the time, my son was telling me he wanted to die and I take that very seriously.”

Bullying in our schools is a serious problem that is being addressed at the national level. Last year alone, close to a dozen children in the U.S. who were victims of bullying in school committed suicide. The youngest, Tori Blair Wilson from Palestine, Texas was only eight years old.

A call to action for a comprehensive national effort to address bullying has been made through the U.S. Department of Education’s Bullying Summit.

Comments from past Summits include:

“When children feel threatened, they can not learn”.

“Bullying affects not only the child or children it targets, but the entire community that surrounds them – their parents, their classmates, even the child engaging in the bullying,”

“Keeping our children safe is everyone’s responsibility, and I’m proud to come together with so many national leaders, parents, teachers and students to reaffirm our collective commitment to prevent bullying in every way possible.”

As the digital age has substantially expanded the ability to intensify and prolong bullying through social networks and personal electronic devices, the summit’s goal of engaging governmental and nongovernmental partners in crafting a national strategy to reduce and end bullying needs critical assessment and improvements in transparency.

Assistant Deputy Secretary Jennings from the Dept of Education stated: “Bullying behavior is not only troubling in and of itself but if left unaddressed, can quickly escalate into harassment, violence and tragedies…We hope this summit will help us get ahead of the game by focusing on prevention and doing everything we can to bring this plague to an end.”

The problems that emerge from cyberbullying have grown to the point that it has become a legislative issues. In light of the January 2010 suicide death of Massachusetts teen, Pheobe Prince, state legislatures have passed a law that now makes cyber bullying a crime.

“One Human Family considers Bullying Prevention” hopes to illustrate how the global community spirit of Key West supports the dynamics of collective consciousness and promotes views of humanity in which peace is possible.

We will be updating the "One Human Family" site regularly so that is serves as a resource for parents, educators and communities on the information available to prevent bullying.

The Tony Award-winning hit musical celebrates the feisty competition of a bunch of lovable and sardonically nerdy contestants who compete for the champion spot in the Putnam County Spelling Bee. The six wacky contestants confronting family struggles strive to gain their identity during the pitfalls of puberty. Ultimately, the nerdy group of misfits learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

Key West, FL: This year marks the 50th Anniversary of our annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest, which helps celebrate some of our rich island history. This special event is free and open to both adults and children.

The Key West Conch Blowing Contest is an event that gets national media attention. It is sponsored by the Old Island Restoration Foundation to showcase the importance of the conch in the Keys. The shells create a far-reaching sound that has a historic value of being used for communication. Sailors used the shells as fog horns and it was also used by early Key West settlers to signal that a sinking ship was spotted off shore.

Our shell-blowing contests showcases some amazing talent but no experience is necessary to participate. Judges of the contest consider the quality, duration, loudness and the uniqueness of the piece they presents. Contestants will compete for trophies and ribbons. The event coordinators will have conch shells available to purchase for those who do not have their own.

The contest takes place on March 3, 2012 at 12p.m.

Presidential Descendants Share Memories of First Ladies Feb. 25 in Key West

KEY WEST, FL: Key West is a great place to have a unique presidential experience for almost anyone. The Harry S. Truman Little White House, Florida's only presidential museum will be hosting a special event on Friday, Feb. 25 as decendans of three former U.S. presidents will share memories and insights about the first ladies of their heritage.

The scheduled presenters include Truman's grandson Clifton Truman Daniel, Herbert Hoover's great-granddaughter Margaret Hoover and Gerald Ford's daughter Susan Ford Bales. The talks are scheduled for 4 p.m. on the west lawn at 111 Front St., where Truman spent 11 working days during his administration.

CNN commentator John Avlon will moderate a panel discussion as the presidential descendants share personal glimpses of America's former first ladies as mothers and grandmothers. Participants will learn first hand how the presidential wives took part in their husband's elections and campaign trails.

The event will be followed by a fundraising cocktail party that will benefit the restoration fund for the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation, whose mission is to preserve and protect the Little White House Heritage Landmark. The 1940's feel of the Little White House will provide an elegant and authentic atmosphere for mingling with the presenters in an intimate setting.

Tickets for the events are priced at $60 per person for admission to the presentation, including the cocktail party.

The Frangipani Gallery is an new and exciting Key West gallery located in the South Duval Arts District. The gallery supports the work of local artists whose talent truly captures the flavor of the Florida Keys. Contributing artists include Fran Decker, William Welch, Steve Hoppough, Jessica Wilson, Will Fernandez, Lois Songer, Susan D'Antonio, Jennifer Martin, Irene Stanton, Lois Giffen and KT Timberlake. Key West, FL: The Waterfron Playhouse previews the off-broadway hit Dead Man's Cell Phone tonight and tommorow. This captivating play explores the nuainces between technology and the developing disconnection taking place in the digital age.

Sitting in a quiet cafe' a young woman is annoyed by the ringing of the cell phone of the man sitting next to her. She is fed up to the point where she can no longer take the ringing and answers his phone, realizing he's not answering because he's dead. She begins to connect to her strange new world and suddenly finds herself taken in by his life and the shady loose ends he left behind. Sarah Ruhl's Dead Man's Cell Phone takes you along through this comic fantasy of one woman's accidental quest to brighten the lives of a few strangers she has connected with.

Ruhl feels that cell phones, iPods, wireless computers are changing people in ways that we don't even understand. “We’re less connected to the present. No one is where they are. There’s absolutely no reason to talk to a stranger anymore—you connect to people you already know. But how well do you know them? Because you never see them—you just talk to them. I find that terrifying.”

Key West, FL: A special ten-performance run of the acclaimed 2010 Tony-Award-winning play "Red" is running now through January 28 at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West. "Red" is the biographical play that frames a moment in the life of abstract-impressionist painter Mark Rothko.

Written by John Logan, "Red" gives an intense performance of the master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and his fictional assistant Ken as he tries to create his crowning achievement. Much of the play unfolds as a combative Socratic dialogue between teacher and pupil, a master class of questions and answers. Sessions in the studie become heated debates as Rothko creates his dark red and black murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagrams building during 1958-59.

The intense 2-man performance in "Red" captures the dynamic relationship between an artist and his creations.

Ticket pricing for the Red Barn Theatre is as follows: $40 for opening nights, $35 for all other nights (unless otherwise indicated) and $65 for Dinner and a Show. Dinner and a show consists of a special three-course meal at the HarborView Cafe at the Pier House Resort, located three blocks from the Red Barn Theatre.

Flagler's 100th Anniversary Gala Costume Ball

Key West, FL: Celebrating the glories of the Flagler Era, the Gala Costume Ball is going to be a step back in time. Participants will enjoy an opulent night of classic costumes, great food, dancing and fireworks.

Bye Bye Liver: Intoxicating to say the least

Key West, FL: "Bye Bye Liver: The Key West Drinking Play" is running tonight and tomorrow night at Hog's Breath Saloon, in the upstairs cabaret - 400 Front Street. The hour and a half long show has assebled some of the best and the brightest local performers and comedic talent including Wayne Jarvela, Li Jones, Michele Meck, Chad Newman, "Cannonball" Katie Walker and Will "Happy Hour" Wilson.

"Bye Bye Liver" was originally launched by The Pub Theater Company in Chicago in 2006 and is an over-the-top celebration of drinking with sketch comedy throughout. The audiance keeps on their toes during this fast-paced performance with interactive social games taking place during the show that has them drinking along with the cast and incorporating unique characteristics of the Key West locals.

25th Anniversary Premier Racing Key West Race Week 2012

Key West, FL: Yachting teams made up of over a dozen countries and 24 U.S. states will be competing for class championships in the international regatta in Key West this week. The stellar racing event take place today through January 20 a Premier Racing presents Key West Race Week 2012.

Race Week's loyal supporters are helping to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of what is recognized as the flagship regatta in the country for over two decades.

Quantum President Ed Reynolds stated: "This has been reinforced by many people we've spoken with both here and abroad. Even with the smaller fleet sizes of recent years, this midwinter, big-boat regatta is very important to North American and international sailboat racing.”

Since 2003 Nautica Watches has been Race Week’s Official Timekeeper and their representatives will be on site to present their fashion sport line of timepieces. Series, Boat of the Day and Week winners will receive watches, as well as the class winners on Nautica Watches Day.

Florida Keys: Great menu items and great entertainment go hand-in-mouth during the The 7th Annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2012.

The mouth watering menu includes: Fried Fish, Grilled Spiny Lobster, Stone Crab Claws, Pick 'n Peel Key West Pink Shrimp, Smoked Fish Dip with crackers, and Conch Fritters, Conch Chowder and; Conch Salad. Hot Dogs and Hamburgers will also be for sale. Beverages sold will be beer, wine, water, and soda. Desserts, such as Estella's Famous Flan, Key Lime Pie, and soft ice cream will be available for purchase.

Live music will start at 11:00 a.m. and conclude at 8:00 p.m.

Paddle and "Go with the Flow" to Key West

Florida Keys: Up to 100 paddlers starting at John Pennekamp State will be taking to the water January 12, 2012 and traveling to Zachary Taylor State Park on January 22, as part of the Centennial Celebration of Henry Flagler's railroad.

The Paddle Florida Keys Challenge is a 115-plus mile adventure that will provide participants with a once-in-a-lifetime paddling experience in what is called a paddler’s paradise, with shallow water in five shades of blue and green. The event offers sign up for any single day of paddling, or for a group of days for only $90/day or $800 for the entire trip, meals included.

The event coincides with the celebration of the grand opening of the Key West Railroad, which manifested from the vision of Henry Flagler. Flagler envisioned a railroad system that would not only cross the sea but would connect a cultural and economic exchange with Cuba, the Panama Canal and South America. Construction began in 1904 and on January 22, 1912, Henry Flagler road the railroad to Key West. The project was heralded by the press as the "Eight Wonder of the World" and forever changed the economic conditions of the Florida Keys.

Ragner 2012 Relay Florida Keys: Running through the night from Miami to Key West

Key West, FL: Some might say it is total insanity, running a relay race almost 200 miles throughout the night, but when the destination of your journey is Key West, you know your journey is destinated to be fun.

The Ragner Relay Florida Keys, presented by NordicTrack, officially kicked off the 2012 season last night as runners began their journey through the night at 4p.m. The starting line where 500 teams met was organized at the Historice Virginia Beach Park in Miami. This Florida Keys relay race gave the participants the unique opportunity to run near the ocean side, crossing multiple bridges, hopping from Key to Key, while taking in the beautiful scenery along the way.

The 199 mile running event led participants as far south as you can go in the continential U.S. ending up watching the sunrise in beautiful Key West and finishing at the Southerost Hotel and Resort on Duval Street.

Ragner specifies two team types, regular teams made up of 12 people running 3 legs each, and ultra teams consisting of 6 people running 6 legs each. The legs of the race vary in difficulty and distance, ranging between 3 to 8 miles each, allowing seasoned runners and novice runners to be on the same team. Each team is classified as male, female, or mixed teams, competing in one of several divisions and runners must run in the same sequence for each segment of the race.

30th annual Key West Literary Seminar - Literature of the Future

Each year the participants of the Key West Literary Seminar explore a unique literary theme during a four-day program of reading, lectures, and conversations.

"Yet Another World: Literature of the Future" will take a look at the unexpected, the unknown, and into worlds that might have been, and worlds that may still come to pass. Some of the most innovative and provocative writers working today will explore the dystopias, utopias, and imagined worlds they create in order to shed light on our current conditions.
The event celebrating the 30th anniversary of the KWLS takes place January 5-8, 2011. What Went Down on New Year's in Key West

KEY WEST, FL: While the party-goers of NY were watching the traditional ball drop, those ringing in the New Year in beautiful Key West gathered for the nontraditional, as the Southernmost City celebrates New Year’s Eve with three different ‘drops’.

Once again, female impersonator Sushi thrilled an audience by riding a giant red shoe to the ground on Duval Street. At Sloppy Joe's thousands of spectators watched as a gigantic man-made conch shell, the symbol of the Florida Keys, was the focus of the time-drop.

And meanwhile at the Key West historic seaport, a pirate wench was lowered from the top of the tall ship's mast, as the pirate crew shot off cannons and gun fire as part of Shooner Wharf Bar's celebrations.

The unique drops were part of the many New Year's events that took place around the island where you can celebrate all year round.

Dash-Hounding All the Way into 2012 - It's the Seventh Annual Key West Dashshund Walk

This tail end event of the year will put a smile on everyone's face as almost 200 dashshunds and their owners take to the streets of Key West. The seventh annual Key West Dashshund Walk begins at 12:00 Saturday, December 31, 2011.

The pooches and their owners are expected to gather at the corner of Whitehead Street and Fleming Street for the weiner walk through the island's downtown streets. Many of the pups will be sporting constumes or will ride in decorated carts. Participants are expected to include both miniature and standard dashshunds, with mixes of shorthaired, wirehaired and longhaired.

This year's parade will also include a "newshound", wearing a "doggie cam" to provide a hot-dog view of the procession.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - next week in Key West!

Key West, FL: Looking for amazing Key West entertainment during the holidays? Not a problem, an all-Key West cast will be performing Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 401 Duval Street on December 29 and 30. Shows start at 7:30 p.m.

The production stars local performer Marc Crow as Joseph, and features Nulita Loder as The Narratora and the orchestra conducted by Pops maestro, Vincent Zito. The musical is based on the "coat of many colors" from the Hebrew Bible's Book of Genesis. The show has very little spoken dialogue and is almost completely sung-through. This family-friendly storyline has a universal theme along with catchy music and great choreography.

Marc Crow’s credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Jimmy Harper in Reefer Madness, the Musical! Malcolm in The Full Monty, Marius in Les Miserables, and Riff in West Side Story. Marc has also performed with Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey and Brian Stokes Mitchell at the Kravis Center produced by Baayork Lee.

The Florida Keys Art Guild, a Monroe County non-profit, strives to bring the best artists from all over the country to exhibit in the Florida Keys and to bring high quality arts and crafts to the buying public.

The Guild is a union of men and women in the same craft and is made up of painters(of all media types), photographers, sculptors, jewelers, mixed-media artist, glass blowers,woodworkers, potters, fabric artist and more.

As part of its commitment to foster the arts, the Guild will host and open-air holiday art showcase Tuesday through Saturday, December 27-31, 2011 at Key West's Bayview Park, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. "August: Osage County" at the Waterfront Playhouse in Key West

Key West, FL: It's "all in the American family" for a lively family reunion where emotions run wild as the Waterfront Playhouse presents "August: Osage County". Opening night is December 22 and includes After Party in the Sculpture Garden sponsored by Bunnie Smith. Regular performances run from December 23, 2011 through January 14, 2012. The show previews December 20 & 21, 2011 at special low rates.

This dark comedy involves a family gathering that turns into an evening filled with sex, secrets and discretely inappropriate behavior. A missing father, a mother battling addiction and a marriage unraveling with lies being exposed makes for a stinging look at the contemporary American family.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play, "August: Osage County" is one of the most lauded plays of the decade. Key West’s beloved Red Barn Theatre continues to produce regional premieres showcasing the talent of local performers.
