Former civil servant Filep Karma is currently serving 15 years in prison after taking part in an annual ceremony at which a Papuan independence flag was raised. He was charged and convicted of rebellion on 26 May 2005. Filep Karma is in prison for exercising his right to freedom of expression. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience.

As a child growing up in the remote highlands of West Papua, we often heard stories from the elders about how our ancestors’ spirits lived in the mountains and forests. How they would cry if they saw what is happening today. Illegal logging is rife, and the world’s largest gold and copper mine, Freeport, has caused permanent environmental devastation to our sacred lands that is visible from space. You would think that being home to the world’s largest goldmine and huge natural gas deposits, West Papua would be a land of riches. Yet we remain the poorest and least developed part of all of Indonesia. There is a lack of basic healthcare, and literacy levels are lower than the national average.

Following the death of a sympathizer of the KNPB [West Papua National Committee], the deputy chairman of the organization Mako Tabuni said that such a thing is part of the risk of the KNPB’s struggle for a referendum. He said: “We do not regard such things as a violation of human rights but as part of the risk of our struggle.” He said that they recognize that loss of life and loss of property are inevitable.
