DIY? Sure, Why Not!

After much contemplation, I have decided to add a weekly feature to Foxy. Yes, yes, I know, it's all very unorthodox of me to even consider. Generally, my posts are completely guided by whims and nothing more.

Lately though, I have been intrigued by all the DIY projects out there. All those pretty pictures enticing me to come on, try me - you know you want to. Why can't I make that pom pom wreath with the deer in it I saw on Twitter? I so could make that sunburst mirror! Origami garland? No problem! Dinner? Bring. It. On.

I should go on record that I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, crafty, good with my hands, or someone who DIYs. I am the girl whose solution to things like gardening, cooking, and decorating is to buy it, pay someone, or rope in my husband or an innocent passersby to take care of it. Well, no more, my friends! I am going to take on one DIY project a week to broaden my horizons and find out for myself if I really can DIY as all those clever blogs and magazines tell me I can. I suspect there will some spectacular fails, but it'll be fun! Plus, I have always wanted to try origami.

Each Monday, I will post about the challenge, and then within a week post my attempts.

I am gong to start out with Tea Cup Flower Arrangements from Frolic. If you have any project suggestions, comment below!

Amelia Earhart...Fashion Designer?

Ever since I was little, I have loved Amelia Earhart. She was independent, intelligent, passionate, fearless, and a total bad a**. Everything I wanted (and still strive) to be. What I didn't realize, until I read this article at the Huffington Post by Mary Hall, was that she was not only an aviator but also a fashion designer. She designed her own flying suits and was one of the first celebrities to have a clothing line carrying her name. This was no licensing gig that I associate with stars' fashion lines today (Jessica Simpson? Paris Hilton?). Amelia actually influenced the line's design, creation, and fabrication.

Her legendary forward thinking extended to fashion, and the collection included concepts such as separates, washable garments, lengthening shirt tails so that they would stay tucked in, and, of course, references to her true love, flying.

While not the most glamorous innovations, Amelia's practicality helped to push the idea of women, and women's fashion, forward. Additionally, her own personal, androgenous style contributed to a broader idea of what beauty and femininity is, and it is one that is muse to fashion even today (see here for another article all about that!).

It's our default hostess gift. I can't tell you how many times my sweetie and I have found ourselves racing to the closest packie to buy a quick gift (one which we are vastly unqualified to select) en route to wherever. All I can tell you is that my favorite kind is a white red. Some sort of wine that is normally red but comes in white. It's good!

Anyway, these tags from Papermash make giving wine way cooler and less last minute-y. Perfect for all those dinners you will be invited to as a couple the minute you get engaged!

Ah. S'mores.

Crispy graham cracker, marshmallow toasted just right (I like to set the marshmallow on fire and then blow it out once it's charred), and some delicious chocolate. A perfect dessert.

I even wrote a post about it.

Then I stumbled onto S'more kits. DIY even, at Twig & Thistle. I just might try this myself. It involves no actual cooking or baking, and thus is right up my kitchen-phobic alley.

Parisian Elopement

Oh, how romantic! Just the thought of Paris gets me worked up into a frenzy. Sadly, I have never been (tragic, I know. It seems I am the only one!). The very idea of that storied city sends me into daydreamy outer space land.

An elopement at the Eiffel Tower is the stuff of movies....and newlyweds Nick and Christina made it a reality.

Wedding Eats: Japanese Mochi

Mochi is so yummy.

Mochi (or Manju) is a sweet Japanese rice cake that traditionally is served during the Japanese New Year, but is eaten year round. The mochi is made from rice pounded into a paste and then molded into a shape. They sometimes have a filling like bean paste, strawberries, or ice cream (like the mochi at Trader Joe's), they come in all kinds of colors, and they are really, really tasty.

I think they would make an awesome addition to a dessert buffet...

Have you seen these necklaces from Muntedkowhai? I really like the different textiles used in the pieces. They would even make my boring t-shirt/cardigan/jeans uniform look cool.

I bet their pieces would also make a cute bridesmaid dress (this one is from Caroline DeVillo) more interesting, too. The added bonus is that they are pretty affordable - most of the necklaces I saw on their site were $40-$50, and earrings were even less!

Douglas Hannant's gowns are fantastic. We were supposed to see the collection in person and, since our other appointments were running late (of course), we totally missed it. Lucky for me, the person in charge of such things at Douglas Hannant was nice enough to send over some pictures, which made me even more annoyed that we didn't get the chance to see the gowns!

I wouldn't go so far as to say the collection is for everyone. As a one time shop owner, I probably would not have been able to see my customer choosing some of them because of their sculptural design, but they are beautiful and very speecial. Douglas Hannant certainly has a vision...if that means there are only a few gowns in the collection that appeal to everyone, that isn't such a bad thing.

Monique Lhuillier & Baklava

I really didn't want to like the collection. Not only because we were so tired and hungry, but also because, as an ex-shop owner, I was over the hype. I mean, how awesome could they be?? Didn't they all look the same? Enough already with the Monique Lhuillier!

Well, I stand somewhat corrected. They were pretty fierce. Each gown was like phyllo dough. Really good phyllo, like my Nena makes - each layer buttery, crisp, and distinct from the others. The three dimensional quality of each gown was pretty outstanding. Layers and layers of stuff happening to make one really good piece of baklava. Does everyone like Baklava? How many different ways can you even present Baklava? Does it even matter since Baklava is delicious?

I guess what I am saying is that Monique is sticking with what she does well - feminine, elegant gowns that are super sophisticated in the presentation of all those wonderful details. So, instead of being a ridiculous amount of stuff on a gown, the embellishment has a magnificent, striking subtlety. I thought they were beautiful.

Strike a Pose

After one particular designer's show (I am not naming names) in which the models would strike these ridiculous poses at the end of the runway, Persephone and I knew we needed a break.

At some point while seeing all the gowns and running around to all the different show locations, things got to feeling a little circus-y.

We felt the need to have our own fashion show, utilizing the poses we had learned near our favorite bodega.

Monique Lhuillier and a "Weddebrity"

So, there we were, packed onto benches at Eyebeam Atelier on a miserable rainy day waiting for the Monique Lhuillier show to start. I am grumpy and Persephone is tired and we are both so hungry. All I could think was, "This had better be good." To amuse myself, I decided to take pictures of all the people wearing black sitting on benches and trying to look elegant, but having a hard time since they were, well, on benches.

Then I got a sharp elbow in the ribs from Persephone as she hissed in my ear, "Isn't that guy the famous wedding planner?" Clueless, I asked her who she was talking about. She pointed him out and, as cracked out as we were, we couldn't remember his name, so Persephone asked the woman to her left and she a little (a lot) snobbily replied, "Um, Colin Cowie."

Well, how about that? He was sitting right across from me.

Then the lights went down and the show began, and it was definitely worth it (check out my post at Wedding Aces to see more). It wasn't until later when I was looking through the images magnified that I saw Colin Cowie again and other "weddebrities" like Sylvia Weinstock, the owners of Kleinfeld, Randy from Say Yes to the Dress, and Mark Ingram everywhere. Funny. I didn't notice them the whole time we were at market.

Check back later for more Claire Pettibone...or maybe Monique Lhuillier. I can't decide. We saw some weddebrities (you know, wedding people who are famous) at Monique Lhuillier. Both of us were trying to front like we weren't looking and confirming with each other that the person was who we thought they were. I am not gonna give anything away, though, so stay tuned!

The Best Drink Ever, a Pretzel, and Sassi Holford

So, after Temperley (which ran really late! We missed Alfred Angelo) on Friday, Persephone and I were famished. We were due to the Intercontinental Hotel to see Sassi Holford, and our cabbie told us that the bodega across from our hotel (the Hilton on 6th) had a huge line (not for nothing) and that we should eat there. Persephone got in line - I needed a pretzel, stat. Then we were off to the Intercontinental.

There we saw the amazing Sassi Holford. She is known throughout the UK as the designer that all others are measured against, and for good reason! The fit of her gowns is unbelievable, even if it is not the right size. Fit is probably the most important consideration when looking for a gown. Fit is why a gown can still look good even if it is too big (like at a show and the dresses are sometimes too big for the models). Sassi's gowns have some of the best construction I have ever seen. That and they are beautiful! I will be posting more about her on Wedding Aces but, for now, here's a glimpse:

After that, we ran around some more in the Intercontinental visiting designers, and at last it was time to meet up with a dear friend of mine, C, for drinks.

That was pretty much one of the best parts of the day. We went to the Double Crown in the East Village. C told us to ask for Madam Geneva, and we were taken to the back of the restaurant and through a hidden door into a bar that was the most laid back, perfect place for a drink ever. There we all had the vanilla bean & fig cocktail. Words fail me. A heaping spoonful of home made fig jam sat on top of yummy vanilla vodka. It was amazing and just what we needed.

Temperley at Spring 2010 NYC Bridal Market

What an insane and wonderful weekend!

My first season at Bridal Market as press and not as a boutique was thrilling and a little bittersweet. More on that later, though...I know you are all waiting for dresses!

Up first is Temperley London.

Temperley's boutique in Soho is airy, vintage-y and for some reason made me think of Mary Poppins...in a good way!

All these image of Temperley showroom by me...sorry they are not cleaned up! I was too tired last night to even try.

Persephone and I were both at Market on behalf of Wedding Wire/Wedding Aces and, while we were there, she did the twittering and I took the pictures (another not so secret dream of mine is to be a photographer. I love the sound of the camera doing speed rounds at a runway show!).

First up at Wedding Aces today is Temperley, Romona Keveza, and Claire Pettibone, and over the next few days we'll be featuring Ines Di Santo, Monique Lhuillier, Sassi Holford, Sarah Arnett, Haute Bride, Atelier Aimee, Anne Barge, L'ezu Atelier, and Lea-Ann Belter.
