Follow @9jaLife &#160; The UN office stated this in New York. Members of Boko Haram and other extremist groups in Nigeria, could face war crimes charges for deliberate acts leading to ethnic and religious cleansing, the United Nations, UN, has said. Rupert Colvile, the spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said this in a statement made available at the UN Head quarters in New York on Friday. He reiterated calls on Boko Haram and other extremist groups in Nigeria to cease their “cowardly attacks” against civilians, members of government institutions, security forces and foreign nationals. “The High Commissioner noted that members of Boko Haram, if judged to have committed systematic attacks against a civilian population on grounds such as religion or ethnicity could be found guilty of crimes against humanity. “Deliberate acts leading to population `cleansing’ on grounds of religion or ethnicity could also amount to a crime against humanity,” Mr. Colville stressed. In recent weeks, more than 220 people have been killed in violent clashes between military forces and the Islamist group, Boko Haram. OHCHR has urged the Nigerian government to abide by human rights principles during security patrols. The rights body also said it was concerned about the large number of casualties, reportedly including many civilians, and massive destruction of houses and property. Mr. Colville urged the government to ensure that international human rights law was respected during its emergency operations. Similarly the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon had said he remained very concerned about the ongoing instability in the country. He underscored the need for all concerned to fully respect human rights and to safeguard the lives of all Nigerians. President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday declared a State of Emergency in three North Eastern states most prone to Boko Haram attacks. The military has already deployed more troops including, reportedly, fighter jets to dislodge the insurgents who have been blamed for the death of hundreds of people in various violent operations across Nigeria.
Follow @9jaLife There was a time when Lagos had a reputation for producing some of the most skillful master forgers in the country. The reputation of the forgers portrayed them as invincible. They were unbelievably skillful in the artistry of forging documents and signatures of all shades and types, complex and simple. Theirs was an art that could make any forged passport undiscernible from the original, save for the power of machines. Headquartered at Oluwole, Lagos Island, the forgers, were that good. They could forge any document on earth. They were the go-to guys for credit card fraudsters and internet scammers popuarly called Yahoo-Yahoo boys. In September 2005, a massive clampdown on Oluwole by a combined team of State Security Service operatives, policemen and officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, yielded a staggering discovery. Over 40,000 forged Nigerian passports, 1,500 foreign passports, which included those of countries like Libya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Congo, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon, Senegal, Switzerland, the Gambia, South Africa, United States, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Ghana were recovered during the raid. In addition to these, about 50,000 assorted foreign cheques and over 500 printing plates, 500 computers, about 10,000 blank British Airways tickets, 10,000 US Postal money orders and blank certificates of occupancy (all forgeries) were seized. The haul also included forged bank account statements, stamps and seals of government bodies blank marriage certificates, death certificates, certificates of incorporation of companies and International driver’s licences. Thereafter, the then Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, paraded 115 suspects arrested during the raid. The forgers ceased work after the raid and business activities calmed at Oluwole. But gradually, the ‘boys’ went back to work. In 2007, the Lagos State Government decided to find a permanent solution to the activities of the forgery cartels, by demolishing structures they had been using for their illicit activities. By June 2010, an ultra-modern market built on the location was opened. Business ended for the master forgers. Or so many people thought. Words have been passed around for some years that the Oluwole Boys never stopped work. They were said to have simply become smarter in their activities to avoid detection by law enforcement agents. But our correspondent [...]<div class="feedflare">

Follow @9jaLife Troops deployed in Borno State by the federal government under the state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday have captured 17 towns and villages allegedly controlled by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect. The troops, which started arriving in the state on Tuesday night, LEADERSHIP WEEKEND learnt, headed straight for the communities where the insurgents allegedly removed the National Flag and installed theirs and engaged them in a series of gun battle. The communities which were identified as hideouts which military sources had been taken over by the troops are New Marte, Kirenuwa, Zabamari, Zambiza Forest, Mafa, Baga, Bama, Banki, Woloji, Gulumba, Gamboru-Ngala, Damasak, Malam Fatori, Abadam, Gashigar, Kukawa, Monguno, among others. Although top military personnel contacted were not forthcoming on the strength of the troops deployed in Borno, sources said it ranged from 4,000 to 10,000. As soon as President Jonathan announced the emergency regime, apprehensive residents of the areas suspected to be Boko Haram havens started relocating to neighbouring towns and states. It was learnt that soldiers had Tuesday night arrived in Maiduguri Air Force Base Terminal and were conveyed to the hideouts of the Boko Haram sect members. Residents on the outskirts of Maiduguri told LEADERSHIP WEEKEND that they saw a truck-load of troops heading for Zambiza Forest, Mafa, New Marte, Kirenuwa, Kala Balge, Dikwa, Kukawa, Monguno, Damasak, Malam Fatori and Abadam border towns and villages. The Joint Task Force (JTF) spokesman in Maiduguri, Lt-Col. Sagir Musa, said that “the troops were special squads from the Defence Headquarters on special assignment and have their separate officers who can speak on their mission in the state. He said: “The troops cannot expose their plans or strategies on how to flush out the insurgents from their hideouts. This is a security matter that cannot be disclosed to the media.” A senior military official, Brig-Gen. Olu Kolade, from Defence Headquarters, confirmed yesterday that the troops had cleared the Zambiza Forest while other camps were receiving similar treatment.
Follow @9jaLife Nnanna Osondu is a young man with all the appetites of his age mates. But he would rather satisfy his sexual appetite, which he described as “large” with elderly women whom he raped. Why? “None of these young girls around is ready to befriend me,” he claimed. Nnanna Osondu of Opi community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State recently stunned security operatives and other inhabitants of the agrarian community when he revealed his delight in raping elderly women. Rape, though an abominable act, is commonly practised among people of sexually active age, but for Osondu, his delight and taste is for women far past menopause. Osondu, said to be in his early 30s, does no serious work for a living. It was reported that he had approached several young women in the community for friendship, but none reciprocated. So, he neither has a wife nor is he courting any one at the moment. He could not even afford the ‘luxury’ of an hour with a call girl. Still, he wanted to satisfy his sexual urge. In meeting his desire for sex, Osondu resorted to raping elderly women whom he later claimed were better than many young girls around. But having carnal knowledge of these elderly women, many old enough to be his grandmother, did not come cheap. Osondu reportedly scouts round the community in the day time, for his prey, and once he gets them, he goes after them at night. Since the alleged rapist could not lure these elderly women with any material item, he reportedly threatened them with a knife he usually concealed in his trousers. Apart from threatening to kill the elderly women should they refuse him sex, Osondu also carefully selected those women who live alone in their homes. For months now, Osondu had successfully raped about a dozen elderly women whose age averaged 60 years old. Luck, however, ran out on Osondu Tuesday, last week, when a victim rebuffed his threat to kill her and managed to raise the alarm which drew the attention of passersby. That was around 4:30p.m on a bush path in the community. It was reported that a day before Osondu planned [...]<div class="feedflare">
