The Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB, http://www.ulab.edu.bd ) hosted the Bangladesh component of the 80plus1 “A Journey Around the World” on September 7, 2009, between 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the ULAB Seminar Room, Campus B, Dhanmondi, Dhaka City. The activity, spearheaded by ULAB Lecturer Shahjahan Siraj, is expected to bring together, via satellite hook-up and fiber optic cable technology, students, faculty and professionals from Austria and Bangladesh.

The closing ceremony started with the welcome speech of Professor Jude Genilo, the Chairman of Media Studies and Journalism Department, ULAB. After the opening comments 80+1 artist, Shahjahan Siraj shared his experiences of the project with the audience, which was moved by watching the video Dhakai Market View.

The Moderator, Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed Chowdhury facilitated the question and answer session between the audiences in Dhaka and Linz.

The ceremony was closed with thanks given to MSJ for hosting the final destination of this segment of the 80+1 project. On behalf of 80+1 Mr. Siraj handed over a certificate to Professor Genilo in recognition of ULAB’s contribution.

Rifle Square is a modern shopping center situated in Dhanmondi next to the BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) cantonement. The name Rifle Square is derived from this proximity to the BDR Camp. This modern shopping center is also located opposite Dhanmondi Lake. A modern daily product Bazaar named Agora is situated to one side of this mall.

There are about 360 shops are operating in the market. All stores are well decorated and full of local and imported products. All kinds of readymade wear, shirt, pant, sari, three pieces, babies’ wear, toys, cosmetics, jewelry, electronics product, shoes, crockery, gifts, card gallery, mobile phone shops, movies, fashion product and many daily needs are on sale in this market. The quality of products sold in this market is generally high , carrying international prices. Some modern food corners also available here, which attract numbers of young people who come here to chat. The courtyard of the market is also a young persons gathering place in the afternoon.

Parallel to western society, the modern products and services are available in this market. This market brings the taste of western life to the life of Dhaka City. Friday is the holiday of this market. This shopping center is a business concern of the Bangladesh Rifles who control its operations.

রাইফেলস স্কয়ার

ধানমন্ডি এলাকার অভিজাত শপিং সেন্টার রাইফেলস স্কয়ার। ধানমন্ডি এলাকার মানুষের জীবনকে আরও উপভোগ্য ও সহজতর করতে রাইফেলস স্কয়ারের ভূমিকা অনেক। রাইফেলস স্কয়ারের পাশেই বিডিআর ক্যাম্প (বাংলাদেশ রাইফেলস) সদর দপ্তর অবস্থিত। মূলতঃ এই বিডিআর ক্যাম্পটির অবস্থানের কারনেই এই শপিংসেন্টারের নামকরণ হয়েছে রাইফেলস স্কয়ার। রাইফেলস স্কয়ারের একপাশে দৈনন্দিন পণ্য সামগ্রীর বৃহৎ বাজার আগোরা অবস্থিত। ধানমন্ডি লেকের বিপরীত পাশে অত্যন্ত মনোরম পরিবেশে নির্মিত হয়েছে এই মার্কেটটি।

আধুনিক স্থাপত্যশৈলী ও বিশাল স্থান জুড়ে মার্কেটটি নির্মিত হয়েছে। এটি চার তলা বিশিষ্ট একটি অত্যাধুনিক শপিং সেন্টার। সব মিলে ৩৫০টির উপরে দোকান রয়েছে এই মার্কেট ভবনটিতে। দেশী-বিদেশী সবধরনের উন্নতমানের তৈরী পোষাক, জুতা, কসমেটিকস, খেলনা, ক্রোকারীজ, গিফট, ইলেকট্রনিঙ্ সামগ্রী, কার্ড গ্যালারী, সিডি-ভিসিডির দোকান, মোবাইল, ফ্যাশন সামগ্রী, জুয়েলারী সহ প্রায় সব ধরনের পয়োজনীয় পণ্যই এখানে পাওয়া যায়। এখানকার পণ্য সামগ্রী গুনগতমানে ভাল এবং অন্যান্য মার্কেটের তুলনায় পণ্যসামগ্রীর দাম এখানে কিছুটা বেশী। এছাড়া এই ভবনে রয়েছে অত্যাধুনিক ফুড কর্ণার যেখানে প্রচুর ক্রেতা বিশেষ করে কলেজ বা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পড়ুয়া ছাত্র-ছাত্রীর ভীড় দেখা যায়।

Jatiyo Shangshad Bhaban is the national Assembly Building of Bangladesh. It is the political centre of the country. Construction of this building started in 1961 and finished in 1982. This building was first used in 15th February 1982. Before this the Prime Minister’s present office was used as the Shangshad Bhaban.

Shangshad Bhaban is built in 200 acres of attractive gardens. Everyday many visitors come here to see Shangshad Bhaban and enjoy the natural scenery of the area. The area has also become a recreation park as well. In the morning many health conscious people come for their morning walk and in the evening huge numbers of boys and girls visit the park. To cater for these people an unofficial street market has become established. Many chapati and fuchka shops are found in this area. Beside these there are stall selling toys, fashion items, cigarettes, tea and coffee. At one time a Pilipino Jeepni was used as a mobile restaurant but during the caretaker government’s time the Jeepni mobile restaurant was evicted.

Crescent Lake and Zia Uddan is situated to the rear of Shangshad Bhaban. Floating shops and hawkers are found all around this building. All street shops operate everyday of the week. On weekly holidays and during government holidays this street market becomes crowded with customers.

সংসদ ভবন ষ্ট্রীট মার্কেট

জাতীয় সংসদ ভবন বাংলাদেশের পরিচালনার প্রধান কেন্দ্রবিন্দু। বর্তমান জাতীয় সংসদ ভবনটির নির্মান কাজ শুরু হয়েছিল ১৯৬১ সালে এবং শেষ হয় ১৯৮২ সালে। ১৫ ফেব্রুয়ারী ১৯৮২ এটি প্রথম ব্যবহৃত হয়। এর পূর্বে যে ভবনটি সংসদ ভবন হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতো সেটি বর্তমানে প্রধান মন্ত্রীর অফিস হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে। প্রায় ২০০ একর জায়গা নিয়ে তৈরী এই সংসদ ভবন এলাকাটি অত্যন্ত মনোরম। প্রতিদিন বহু দর্শনার্থী এই সংসদ ভবন দেখতে। তবে বিকেল বেলায় তরুন-তরুনী দর্শনাথর্ীর সংখ্যাই বেশী। আর তাই এই এলাকায় দেখা যায় রকমারী পণ্য সামগ্রীর ছোট ছোট দোকান। এটা ছোটখাট একটা ষ্ট্রীট মার্কেট হলেও বেশ পরিপাটি ও গোছানো। এখানে অনেকগুলো চটপটি ও ফুচকার দোকান দেখা যায়। এছাড়া এই এলাকায় বাচ্চাদের খেলনা, ফ্যাশন সামগ্রী, পান-সিগারেট, চা, কফি প্রভৃতি হকারা বিক্রি করে ।

সংসদ ভবনের পিছনের অংশে রয়েছে ক্রিসেন্ট লেক ও জিয়া উদ্যান। ভবনটির সামনে পিছনে সর্বত্রই ভ্রাম্যমান দোকান ও হকারদের বিচরন দেখা যায়। এই ভ্রাম্যমান দোকান ও হকার সমৃদ্ধ ষ্ট্রীট মার্কেটটি সপ্তাহের প্রতিদিনই খোলা থাকে। তবে শুক্র ও শনিবার সাপ্তাহিক ছুটির দিন এবং সরকারী ছুটির দিন গুলোতে এই ষ্ট্রীট মার্কেট সবচাইতে সরগরম থাকে।

BCS Computer City is the biggest computer market in Bangladesh. The mall opened in 1999 with 100000 square feet of space, situated at Agargaon, She-e-Bangla Nagoor district of Dhaka City. There are 322 modern computer and accessories shops located in the mall, which is perceived to be tat the cutting edge of technology and development in Bangladesh.

Like other developing nations, the digital divide in Bangladesh is prominent, but the computer city has made access to technology, particularly the young generation, much easier. However, problems remain. There are real problems with the high price of computers and the English base of most computing makes it inaccessible to most people. To overcome these problems the Bangladesh government has declared it will create a Digital Bangladesh by providing the technology for all.

The businessmen of the computer city, however, control the introduction of computer technology to the country through their contracts on brand name products. Hardware, software, computer, laptops, DVD, movie, Internet and computer magazine are the common products on sale in this market. A nineteen storey ultra modern building called IDB Bhaban is attached to BCS Computer City. Friday is the holiday for this market.

This computer market opens at 9:00 AM and closes at 8:00 PM. A number of customers and visitors gather here all day long. Everyday a new model computer and other imported products are displayed in this market, which has a strong security system.

বিসিএস কম্পিউটার সিটি

বিসিএস কম্পিউটার সিটি বাংলাদেশের সর্ববৃহৎ কম্পিউটার মার্কেট। এ মার্কেট বাংলাদেশে আধুনিক প্রযুক্তির উত্তরনে যোগ করেছে সবচাইতে উল্লেখযোগ্য ও শক্তিশালী মাত্রা। ১৯৯৯ সালে এই মার্কেটটি ঢাকার আগারগাও, শেরেবাংলা নগরে যাত্রা শুরু করে। অত্যাধুনিক এই কম্পিউটার মার্কেটটি চারতলা বিশিষ্ট। বর্তমানে এখানে দোকান সংখ্যা প্রায় ৩২২টি এবং মোট আয়তন ১০০০০০ স্কয়ার ফিট।

কম্পিউটার সিটির মোট চারটি ফ্লোরে কম্পিউটার ও কম্পিউটার এর সাথে সংশ্লিষ্ট সকল প্রকার পণ্যের রয়েছে ব্যাপক সমারোহ। প্রতিদিন নিত্যনতুন মডেলের কম্পিউটার, ল্যাপটপ ও অন্যান্য যন্ত্রপাতি সরাসরি বিদেশ থেকে আমদানী করে এখানে আনা হয়। সকাল থেকে সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত দেখা যায় ক্রেতা ও দর্শনার্থীদের ব্যাপক আনাগোনা। নিরাপত্তার জন্য এখানে সব রকম সতর্ক ব্যাবস্থা রয়েছে। কম্পিউটার ছাড়াও এই মার্কেটে সার্ভিসিং সেন্টার, মোবাইল ফোন, সিডি-ভিসিডি, ক্যামেরা, ভিডিও গেমস ও আরও বেশকিছু ইলেকট্রনিঙ্ পণ্য সামগ্রীর দোকান দেখা যায়। এই মার্কেটটির অভ্যন্তরে মনোরম নামাজের স্থান এবং একটি আধুনিক ফুড কর্ণারও রয়েছে।

বিসিএস কম্পিউটার সিটি প্রতি শুক্রবার বন্ধ থাকে। প্রতিদিন সকাল ৯:৩০ হতে রাত ৮:০০টা পর্যন্ত খোলা থাকে। মার্কেটটির পাশেই ১৯ তলা বিশিষ্ট বিখ্যাত আইডিবি ভবন অবস্থিত।

The previous name of Jatrabari was Brammonchiron when the best way of reaching this place was a water vessel. In the past, when there was no TV, cinema and electronic entertainment media, the Jatrapala (local Bangla form of drama) was very popular place for recreation. In this area there is a famous Jatramondop. Because of the wide practice of jatra culture, the place name became Jatrabari.

Jatrabari has become one of the one the busiest streets of Dhaka City. Thousands of people visit the place as it is a connection point with a number of districts. There are always huge traffic jams particularly as the street market has captured the footpath illegally. People cannot move easily in Jatrabari.

Jatrabari is a bus stop even though it is close to the famous bus station Sayadabath. It is a dangerous area for pedestrians as it’s always crammed with buses, cars and taxis that seem to be in constant movement. More over, the rickshaws increase the traffic.. The area is situated in the old Dhaka, where it is said old Dhaka people are not concerned about education but very serious about money making.

There are a huge number of restaurants, which unfortunately don’t have a good reputation in regard to providing hygienic food. It is a part of the city where the traditional herbal Kabiraji and Hakimi medicine systems are practiced and despite the possible health risks they are advertised with huge banners draped across the streets and buildings..

Like as other street markets, Jartrabari street market is known for low quality, cheap. Nowadays a number of modern shopping centers have been established in the market, mostly selling clothes, cosmetics and fashion products.

যাত্রাবাড়ী

যাত্রাবাড়ী এলাকাটির পূর্ব নাম ভ্রাম্যণচিরণ। এক সময় এই এলাকার অধিকাংশ স্থানই জলাভূমি ছিল। এখনকার মত অতীতে টিভি, সিনেমা, কম্পিউটার, ছিল না। তখন বিনোদনের অন্যতম মাধ্যম ছিল যাত্রাপালা। তখনকার সময়ে যাত্রাবাড়ীতে একটি বিখ্যাত যাত্রামন্ডপ ছিল যার কারনে লোকজন এই এলাকাকে যাত্রাবাড়ী বলতো। বস্তুতঃ এখান থেকেই যাত্রাবাড়ী নামের উৎপত্তি।

যাত্রাবাড়ী বর্তমান ঢাকা শহরের অন্যতম ব্যাস্ত একটি এলাকা। যাত্রাবাড়ী ওভারব্রীজ ও বাসষ্ট্যান্ড অত্যন্ত জনবহুল হওয়াতে এখানে গড়ে উঠেছে নানা প্রকার দোকান, মার্কেট, রেষ্টুরেন্ট, ফুড কর্ণার, শো-রুম, যাত্রী ছাউনি ইত্যাদি। সকাল থেকে শুরু করে রাত পর্যন্ত এখানে দেখা যায় বিপুল সংখ্যক লোক সমাগম। একসময়কার জলাভূমিগুলো আজ পরিণত হয়েয়ে জনবহুল জনপদ ও উন্নত আবাসিক এলাকায়।

যাত্রাবাড়ী বাসষ্ট্যান্ড এলাকায় গড়ে উঠেছে অনেকগুলো বহুতল মার্কেট ভবন। এগুলোর মধ্যে রহমান ম্যনশন অন্যতম। মার্কেটগুলোতে প্রায় সবসময়ই দেখা যায় ক্রেতা সমাগম। এই এলাকার ফুটপাত ও অলিগলিতে দেখা যায় বিপুল সংখ্যক ভ্রাম্যমান দোকান ও হকার। এসব ভ্রাম্যমান দোকানে স্বল্পমূল্যের তৈরী পোষাক, কমদামী খাবার, দেশী-বিদেশী ফল, ক্যালেন্ডার, বই, ম্যাগাজিন, ভেষজ পণ্যের দোকান, কসমেটিকস ও নানাবিধ পণ্য সামগ্রী পাওয়া যায়।

যাত্রাবাড়ী ওভারব্রীজ সংলগ্ন এলাকাটি সবসময়ই রিঙ্া, গাড়ী ও বিভিন্ন যানবাহনের ভীড় লেগেই থাকে কারন মোড়টিতে চারদিক থেকে রাস্তা এসে মিলিত হয়েছে। এলাকাটিতে মানুষের জীবন অত্যন্ত ব্যাস্ত ও গতিময় পরিলক্ষিত হয়, তবে তুলনামূলক ভাবে এলাকাটিতে আধুনিকতার ছোঁয়া পড়েনি। এখনো যাত্রাবাড়ীতে ঢাকার বাহিরের শহর গুলোর মতো কবিরাজী চিকিৎসা প্রচার ও ব্যবসা লক্ষ্য করা যায়। জিনিষ পত্রের দাম সস্তা হলেও রেষ্টুরেন্ট গুলোতে স্বাস্থ্যকর খাবার খুব বেশী পাওয়া যায় না।

এই এলাকায় স্কুল, কলেজ, মাদ্রাসা, মসজিদ, অফিস ও অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থাপনাও রয়েছে। ঢাকা শহরের চলমান জীবনে গতিময় এই যাত্রাবাড়ী এলাকাটি উল্লেখযোগ্য একটি স্থান।
