All too often when a disaster strikes, our four-legged friends are left to fend for themselves and sometimes end up lost, injured or killed.

All too often when a disaster strikes, our four-legged friends are left to fend for themselves and sometimes end up lost, injured or killed. The best way to avoid this tragic scenario is to have a well-thought-out disaster plan that includes Fido, so you know where to go and what to take.

“Many public shelters that are set up for disaster victims don’t accept pets so you need to find out in advance which shelters or hotels along your evacuation route will accept animals,” says Lyman Munson, vice president of risk services for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. “It is tragic, but people have actually died because they were ordered to evacuate a disaster area but stayed because they did not want to leave their pets.”

With so many different potential disasters, advance planning is the best way for everyone to survive a catastrophe and get their lives back to normal as soon as possible.

Fireman’s Fund offers the following tips to protect your pets in the event of a disaster:

Have a disaster plan

Put together a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians along your evacuation route and outside your area that might be able to shelter your pets in an emergency.

Talk to your vet, the local humane society or the local emergency management agency for information regarding community evacuation plans that include pets.

Make advance arrangements to have a friend or neighbor pick up your pets in the event you are not at home when a disaster strikes. And, plan where you will meet or how you will reach each other.

Make a grab-and-go disaster kit for your pets

Just as you should have a disaster kit for your family, containing important papers and other key items, you should prepare a similar kit for your pets. It should contain the following:

Medication and medical records (including proof of rabies vaccination) in a waterproof container.

Leashes, harnesses, crates and carriers for transporting your pet.

A muzzle, if your pet requires one.

Food and water for at least three days.

Cat litter and litter box.

Comfort toys.

Recent photo of your pet in case you become separated.

Name and phone number of your veterinarian.

If you must evacuate, take your pets

Be prepared to leave early; do not wait for an official evacuation as you might be ordered to leave your pets behind.

Make sure your pet is wearing up-to-date identification. Include the phone number of a friend or relative outside your area in case your pet gets lost and you cannot be reached. And mark the crate or carrier with similar information.

Birds should be transported in a secure travel cage or carrier.

After the disaster

Once you return to your home, do not allow your pets to roam loose right away. While you assess the damage, keep dogs on a leash and other animals in their carriers.

Familiar landmarks and smells might be gone, and your pet may become disoriented. Pets can easily get lost in such situations, so give them some time to get used to their “new” surroundings. Be patient. Try to get your pets back into their normal routines as soon as possible, and be on the lookout for stress-related behavioral problems; if these persist, talk to your veterinarian.

“Planning for your pets ahead of time will relieve stress and help you and your family to focus on safety during and after a disaster,” says Munson. “Safety should be your primary consideration.”

by John Moxly

The pocket knife is an iconic tool carried by outdoorsmen, craftsmen and everyday men and women across the world. The reason for its popularity is clear; it’s simply one of the most functional tools available today. Here are a few great uses for carrying a pocket knife.

Opening Boxes, Letters, Packages, etc.

There’s nothing worse than spending half of Christmas morning watching your brother and law struggle helplessly with a Land’s End box. Of course, if you were carrying your trusty pocket knife, you would be spared this annoyance and could move on to other gift-giving.

With their variety of blades, pocket knives are excellent tools for opening boxes. Don’t want to sully your hands opening letters? Impress your co-workers at the office by opening them up with your pocket knife.

Camping

Camping without a knife is unforgivable. From shaving down kindling to roasting hot dogs on the fire, you need a pocket knife. Of course, there’s always a chance you might have to fight off a rogue bear with your pocket knife as well, like this guy did.

A pocket knife with tweezers can also come in handy if you’re out in the wild and end up with a tick or a fat, nasty splinter.

Fishing

This one couldn’t be more obvious. A fisherman without a pocket knife isn’t a fisherman; he’s just a lonely guy drinking beer next to a lake. From cutting line to removing hooks, a trusty pocket knife is mandatory for any fisherman. Plus, if the fish aren’t biting, at least you can use the bottle opener on your knife to pop open a cold brew.

First Aid

From cutting bandages to fashioning tourniquets, you never know when a pocket knife can come in handy. They’re also great for freeing hostages who have been bound in rope, though hopefully you’ll never encounter that.

On a more serious note, if someone does get injured while you’re outdoors, a pocket knife can also be used to carve messages to other parties along the path.

Peeling Fruit

This one I swiped from a great post on the blog the Art of Manliness. There’s really nothing tougher-looking than sitting on your stoop and gnawing on an apple you peeled with you own blade.

Protection

A pocket knife doesn’t make much of a weapon, nor is it designed to be one, but if you do find yourself in a sticky situation it may be enough to fend of or at least slow down an attacker.

Have more Pocket Knife Questions? Want to Buy One?

Many websites have huge pocket knife inventories for your perusal, so check it out and find the right blade for you.

by John Jones

The very idea of possibly having to prepare for a hardship of any manner threatens to annihilate the general calm. To a person who may be in denial about anything bad ever happening, anything that destroys the idea of peaceful coexistence with man and nature is unwelcome.

But, do you quit being a survivalist just because everybody thinks your labors are needless? Of course not.

What you can do is to set a good example, while hoping that nothing ever takes place to prove to everybody that you were right in planning for a disaster all along. What you must do is to strengthen your survivalist strategy, and hope that everybody does the same so that you do not have to get stuck in the middle of a panicked, bewildered throng of people if something bad happens.

Survival Tips

If we’re speaking the same language, here are some suggestions on how you can fortify your emergency preparedness tactics for a crisis situation.

In any survival condition, the basic requirements of food, water and shelter must be met. This means packing food that will keep without refrigeration for a few days, and bringing an adequate amount of water to supply your needs. This also means preparing for the possibility that you may have to look for for food and water, and erect your own shelter.

Sharing

As much as we want to survive a catastrophe, we cannot deny that somebody else’s welfare may become our problem during an emergency. So, my recommendation would be to bring enough for sharing, but not too much that you get held back from your foremost priority, which is saving your family and yourself from harm’s way.

Your worst enemies in a calamity is your environment and your emotions. Being prepared will give you an edge when it comes to remaining calm and secure in the knowledge that you have the means to live on when the calamity gets any worse. But you can do little to manipulate the surroundings. All you can do is deal with it, and do what you have to do to endure for the next few hours or days.

Keeping the Frame of mind

As a survival oriented person you may have already discovered that even among the few million conservative members of the public you are in the minority. In addition, you are most likely thought of as an outcast or a “weird” person. Imagine all the raised eyebrows in the PTA gathering when someone finds out that you have been teaching survivalism principles to your little ones. The prevalent frame of mind of a community is that someone else is responsible for their survival. It could be the federal government or a higher religious force that takes care of their needs.

As a disaster management enthusiast myself, I understand what it feels to be considered a misfit during a period of calm, and a hero in a period of crisis. It is like being a square bolt in a sea of rounded ones. But you must understand that survival is a private decision and that the populace cannot be educated into survival preparation. They have got to develop the same interest so that they can make their own choices.

by John Jones

You are a handgun hobbyist if you keep a few guns for collection purposes. But even if you’re not a collector, you may have a few weapons around the house for a range of purposes, like hunting or self defense. A drawer can be a convenient place to keep a gun, but it’s hardly the safest. You do not want anybody to come across your firearm and get interested about it, particularly not young adults or young children. You also don’t want any attackers from efficiently disarming you by looking at the obvious areas where everyone else would keep a firearm. What you need is a safe place to keep your gun.

An Armaments Room

If you have the space to spare, you can build a small work shop where you can clean your guns on your free time when everybody else is asleep or away from home. The whole room should be equipped with safety characteristics, and your vintage show weapons mounted high up the wall so no youngster or pet could get to it. You can build several cabinets for diverse types of guns, with each cabinet equipped with padlocks. Along the walls, you can have your very own room for gun books and armaments supplies.

One main reason why you ought to have a space devoted exclusively for your gun hobby is safety. No one should be around you while you’re cleaning or clearing your guns. You should make sure that everyone gives you a wide berth when you’re checking a rifle to make certain that it is not loaded. You should also ensure you are wearing defensive gear like goggles. It is not recommended to pick up a firearm if you have been drinking coffee or alcohol. it’s also not safe to clean a gun when you are tired.

A Rifle or a Gun Container

If you don’t have much space, you can settle for a small pistol case under the couch. But for your safety, you should always keep your weapon case someplace else to be less obvious about the fact that you’re keeping a gun. If a robber should get in your house, you do not want him grabbing your pistol container with no trouble simply because you stowed it away somewhere too obvious (like under the couch).

Trendy Storage for Your Weapons

As far as stylish storage is concerned, you have a few alternatives. You can go for cabinets that go with the decor of your residence. You can even have one customized by your interior decorator so that the gun cabinet fits right in and nobody would guess that a few weapons are kept inside your fashionable cupboards.

What you need to steer clear of, however, are the cabinets that only look great but don’t do anything in terms of security. Glass cases may be excellent to view and give an elegant display of your firearm antiques. However, should anybody want to filch your guns, they only need to break the glass to obtain them. Choose cabinets made of dense lumber like cedar. You may even install a number of extra drawers for your other hunting stuff and ammunition.

The ones that are trendy now are convertible storage containers that can be used to make an exhibition of your collection and to store your apparatus. If you’re not enthusiastic about conventional cabinets, you can go for modern ones, wall mounted and compact.
