Chroma Website Update, Beer Pong Part II Succes, 2.5 Weeks Left

2012-04-21T20:06:00.000-07:00

Chroma Website Now Updated with Official SF State Theme

Our official website has now been updated to have the official San Francisco State University theme!

Check it out!

Beer Pong, Round II—Success

Our beer pong fundraiser yielded yet another successful outcome, with a good amount of money raised as well as increased awareness for our exhibition! And of course, a lot of us involved in this exhibition needed a break to just drink and have a good time.

2.5 Weeks Left

It's a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon—perhaps the best one this year yet—but we're on campus working on the exhibition. It's the final stretch, and there are tasks we need to stay on top of—scheduling, getting the speakers, food, music, promoting, etc etc. Final stretch!

Structures reuse drawings and miscellany; Downloads

2012-04-13T12:14:00.010-07:00

Here are the drawing sheets for our modified Chroma structures. In addition to these will be the square blocks that a few of the logistics team helped with which will likely be shown Tuesday. They will essentially be made in the same fashion but stand independently like pedestals and display products on top.

In the meantime, here are the sheets, renders and files to reference from.

The first two drawings are variations on what we've discussed as a group and the second shows the direction we went. You can see the proposed light structures in previous renderings. The following two drawings are based off of what was actually built along with some hopefully clear dimensions so it can be reproduced/referenced from along with an exploded view and bill of materials to illustrate how it assembles with the necessary parts.

Although our vision is less disco and more Tron, it gives a good idea of how things should be looking. In progress are the proposed mods to the top fascia for creating the most effective change in silhouette given the constraints. The 8' pedestals may be scratched since functionally, they don't serve much use. Instead, we plan to stack two of the intermediary height pieces to create the desired effect while still remaining usable for future shows as a parts base.

Finally, the files. Jpegs, then PDFs. The pictures on the blog are full size but are included in the link as well. I will be adding the Solidworks Part and Assembly files also in future posts.

Structures Floor Plan

2012-04-12T23:24:00.007-07:00

Rough floor plan drawing.

The structures are semi permanent as they're strategically placed over outlets to minimize wires but the counter/entrance area is likely to change a bit as the idea of having counters might not work out.

The big round thing near the top left is indicative of the 6' diameter minimum for wheelchair turning radius as per ADA regulation so there will be plenty of room for both wheelchairs and foot people to squeeze by every area in the show.

There will also be a screen collage setup on the stage where digital media will be presented and will be easily set up after the speakers do their thang.

Below are some quick renderings used to get an idea of how the space will look/work.

A Drink for Trogu!

Last but not least…a shout out to our hard-working coordinator, Professor Pino! He's been working so hard, he deserved an awesome beverage (of alcoholic nature), on us! Here he is, taking a well-deserved break during an AIGA fundraiser last night.

Until next time! One month away guys!

Logistics: Donor Letters + Phone Calls, Kickstarter, Beer Pong Round 2!

2012-04-03T15:23:00.001-07:00

Hello! Lots of news and development from the Logistics side of Chroma.

Donation Requests

First of all, we've sent out the wave of letters and made phone calls to all the prospective donors.

Kickstarter

Secondly, our Kickstarter fundraising page is live! For those who don't know, Kickstarter allows creators to share their projects with the world and to draw donations from those who are interested. This should be a great way for us (which we've never used before!) to try to raise funds for our show! Our goal is $1,600, which is pretty lofty, so feel free to promote it to your friends, classmates, professors, bosses, or on Facebook!

Click here to check out our Kickstarter page. Promote it on your Facebook page!

CHROMA Beer Pong Competition

Thirdly, our last Beer Pong Competition was such a success that we're having one more round to gather more funds before the show! Last time, despite hurricane-esque weather, we still had a great turnout. This time, we're hoping for nice spring weather and we're also increasing the fees. Hopefully we can make significantly more this time! You're all invited to come (as long as you're 21 and up, of course).

Logistics Team Progress: Website, Fundraising, Contacting donors, Kickstarter

2012-03-08T19:53:00.001-08:00

Hello! The Logistics Team for Chroma—checking in.

It's been a busy few weeks for everyone involved with this show (Logistics Team, Graphics Team, and Structures Team. Oh, and Professor Trogu, too!), but we've accomplished a lot of stuff—though we still have a lot more to do!

Some key highlights of the past few weeks for the Logistics Team:

Chroma Website

The show's website is updated, with current info and graphics! Whoo! Excellent graphics from the Graphics Team and great photos from Florence and Maggie.

Beer Pong Competition

We've set up a beer pong competition to raise money! There's a lot of excitement around it, and we hope for it to be a tremendous success, not only for fundraising but for bringing a lot of spirit to the whole process.

For more information: http://www.facebook.com/events/357054347659450/

Contacting Donors

After a much more strenuous process than people realize, we're finally on our way to contacting a very LARGE number of potential donors. We're very happy with our list and our letterhead (thanks, graphics!), and are confident about reaching out to all of these people and businesses.

Kickstarter

We've decided to set up a Kickstarter account to raise more funds. It's definitely a lot of work itself, but we feel it'll be worth it! We want to go the extra mile to do what we can to make Chroma a huge success.

Until next time! Two short months from Chroma's official launch!

Here's an idea I came up with for the posters. I have a bunch of these old family slides from the 50's & 60's, so I thought using them in the posters would tie into our ideas about projecting old slides throughout the exhibit.

This should be the final outcome. Measurements are complete, with possible minor adjustments, but this is the shape we're going to try and put together on Tuesday and see how it holds.

2011-03-27T15:42:00.000-07:00

Pino and i were talking about the wall and he figured there might be some problems with the wiring for the lights.
Here's a rendering of a new wooden C channel concept he designed. The Sintra can be spaced apart enough to fit in extension cords. It's made out of 3/4 inch wood and the sintra grooves would be 1/2 inch deep. It would replace the C metal channel, with the exception of the screen sections.
That's what those cuts on top are for, you slide the screen's C channel over it and it gets screwed into the wood.

Reverb structures details and materials specifications

2011-03-22T22:19:00.000-07:00

Details presented by structures team on Tuesday, March 22, 2011

1. How does sintra panel attach to aluminum panel

2. Foot of panels. How does sintra panel sit on the ground. Consider need for gaps to route electrical wires if needed.

3. Shelf. How does bracket for shelf attach to sintra panel or to aluminum channel.

4.How does shelf attach to bracket. Determine depth of shelf based on available raw material (8'X4' sintra or ply).

5-6. How does lighting (which type) attach to upper shelf. Determine upper shelf which also functions as stiffener for structure.

7. How does aluminum cross brace attach to upper shelf or aluminum channels.

8. Islands with shelves. Design matches larger wall except less vertical material (none?) Consider using 1"x1" channel of which we already have some. Must display 3D products, hold DVD players and various projectors. Must route electrical and AV wiring.

9. Projection screens. Approx. 48"x36". Determine frame material for stretching fabric with thread. How do frames attach to uprights. Determine number of screens. Ideally 24 screens but getting 24 LCD projectors is a challenge. Slide projectors only show static images, not very appealing.

10. Artwork hanging system. Determine method for hanging artwork.

Attached are also the dimensions of the materials currently being considered. If we need to double up on the sintra that's OK. A quick calculation of 48 panels x $40 is still less than $2000. the shelves could be wood. I did a rough quick calculation: sintra: $2000; channel: $2000; 1/2" plywood: 1000. The plywood includes shelves for the main structures (12x48 each) and shelves for the islands (24x48 each), 6 for each island, stacked 3 times, one for products and 2 for equipment. Lighting is still out of the picture and it needs to be addressed.

And again...
