Motorola introduces Android phone

San Francisco: Motorola introduced its first smartphone based on Google's Android software Thursday, in a move that's key to the company's goal of regaining its place among the world's top cellphone manufacturers.

The device, dubbed the Cliq, will first be made available later this year in the U.S. through T-Mobile. The touch-screen phone will run a new service from Motorola called MotoBlur, which synchronises all user messages and contacts, Motorola chief executive Sanjay Jha said at the Mobilize conference in San Francisco.

"MotoBlur makes text, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter feeds and photos from sources like MySpace, Gmail, Yahoo and corporate e-mail appear in a single stream and sync them together with no different logins," Jha said. "This means you can focus on what people have said instead of how and where they said it."

The Cliq will feature a full, slide-out keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera and access to all the Google programmes and applications available for the company's Android platform.

The phone will be called the Dext in markets outside the U.S. and will launch in France, Britain and Latin America later in the year, Jha said. No pricing was available for the device.

Analysts said the integration of social networking into phones could give Motorola and other manufacturers a foot in the door in their battle to challenge the iPhone as the world's dominant smartphone.

Motorola has been especially hard hit by the move to smartphones, selling just 18.8 million handsets in the most recent quarter, down from 28.1 million a year ago. Earlier this decade, the company's Razr was the world's most popular cellphone.

Jha said that Motorola was now refocused on producing cutting-edge mobile devices. He said the Cliq was crucial to the company's recovery.

"It's a very important starting point for us," Jha said. "I see smartphones as the future of computing. If it doesn't fit in your pocket, I don't think it's going to be a relevant device."

Mid-size companies are now recruiting

Bangalore: Medium size IT companies are back on lateral hiring as the market conditions are improving. These companies were the first to down curtains on lateral hiring last year because of a sizeable bench and rising salary costs, reports the Business Line. "The mid-caps did see a stock rally and there is confidence in the Indian market," says a Mumbai-based IT recruiter.

Dr Pallab Bandyopadhyay, Vice-President and Head, HR, Asia Pac, Perot Systems, says it has been hiring at a steady pace and has to currently fill 300-400 positions. It is looking at filling at least 100-150 positions a month. Companies such as Aricent, Logica and captives such as Goldman Sachs and BankAm are hiring between 200 and 300 people.

According to few HR consultants, lateral hiring is back because the market has improved. Most of the recruitments currently are in the laterals (those between five years and 10 years' experience). However, many companies are putting campus hiring on hold after an advisory from Nasscom has suggested that IT companies should stay away from campuses until they have honored all last year's offers.

Rishi Das, CEO, CareerNet, a Bangalore-based recruitment firm, says that there will be a big recruitment cycle beginning in mid-size companies. He also suggested that campus recruitment would be active in the last semester and not 18 months ahead of graduating, as it happened earlier. Laterals who could demand between 50 percent and 100 percent salary jump can now at best expect a 15-20 percent rise in salary when they change jobs, says Das.

Central government employees to get 5 percent more dearness allowance

New Delhi: The central government Thursday announced a five percent hike in dearness allowance for its employees and pensioners, with retrospective effect from July 1.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters here after the meeting.

Dearness allowance will now be 27.77 percent of the basic pay of government officials and pensioners.

The hike will cost the government Rs.2,903.55 crore in 2009-10 and Rs.4,355.35 crore per year in subsequent years, Soni said.

Overcome Depression

If you are feeling down and out, and don't know what to do to get out of that horrible state of mind, the following can help you considerably overcome this seemingly impossible hurdle to climb over:

Know that you are still in control. You control the depression, not the other way around. Letting the depression get the best of you will undoubtedly make it more difficult to overcome. Remind yourself that you are ultimately in control, and that this is a phase, and that it's not staying forever.

Talk about it. Keeping these issues and feelings inside may make them grow and get worse over time. Therefore, it could be beneficial for you to discuss this with someone, anyone that you trust and can confide in. Friends and family are there to support you in your time of need, and this is an issue where there is no shame into discussing it.

Go outside. Naturally, the environment and nature makes us feel better. The fresh air, the sounds of the birds, the trees, it has a positive affect on us. Take a walk outside, in a park, in a forest, and you will notice how better you will feel. When you are surrounded by the beauty of nature, you will instantly start feeling better.

Move around. The more you move your body, the better you will feel. Do some exercises, or any activity where you are active and moving, and you will notice that your mood will change. Most people that are depressed are people that lack physical activity.

Talk to your Higher Power. No matter what you believe in, take a moment to talk to your God, your angel, or universal spirit that you know is there and hears you. Pour your heart out, and let all your emotions out. Not only you will feel better, but you will certainly start understanding it all better and start getting the answers you are looking for.

Remember to never ever give up. Life isn't always an easy ride, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel; there is always sunshine after a rainy day. It's not the end of it all, and greater things are in store for you down the line :)

NIIT to handle online CAT

Bangalore: NIIT will be taking care of the infrastructure and administration of CAT, the common entrance test to Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), the country's premium business schools, which is being taken on computers for the first time this year, reports Economic Times.

The test will be held in around 200 private colleges across the country. An NIIT spokesman confirmed that the company has bagged a deal from U.S.-based Prometric, the world's largest computer-based testing service provider that is conducting the Common Admission Test (CAT) of IIMs, for providing test centres across the country.

Although he refused to give financial details, a company executive said that NIIT will get Rs.50-55 crore from Prometric, which bagged a $40 million deal from IIMs to conduct what will be the largest computer based test in India so far with more than three lakh students expected to take part. The CAT will be held in two sessions each day for 10 days, between November 28 and December 7. Online registration for the test begins on September 9. NIIT had last month started tying up with private colleges having at least 100-computers each for conducting the test.

As part of the deal, the colleges will be paid an average rent of Rs.60 per student, depending on the infrastructure they provide. Tight security check will include close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to record all the movements of every applicant, matching fingerprints, metal detectors and photo identification check.

Three private colleges in Chandigarh, including Indo-Global College, which has the largest computer centre in Punjab, have been roped in by NIIT. While colleges will take care of computers, internet, image capture cameras, generators and UPS, NIIT will provide identity cards, biometric equipment and stationery.

Every room at the testing centre will have a maximum of 50 computers. There will be monitor separators to ensure no candidate can view anybody else's computer screen and the personnel deployed by the college during the test would be pre-verified by NIIT. IIMs are scheduled to release the official list of test centres by September 9.

Indian IT companies skip campus recruitment

Bangalore: With Nasscom, the software industry's apex body advising its members not to go to campuses for recruitment, the placements at engineering colleges has dried up. However, although 2008-09 was a difficult year for training and placement officers (TPO) at engineering colleges, 2009-10 could be the most critical year for campus placements, reports Economic Times.

JN Pitambare, Dean of Sinhagad Institute says, "Normally, 75-80 percent of the placements used to take place by mid-August. However, this year I will be happy if I am able to place even 10-15 percent of our students by December."

SV Dravid, TPO, DY Patil College of Engineering at Akurdi, near Pune said, "Last year, we had placed 150 students by this time. This year, not a single student has been placed. I hope the situation improves by December." Normally the big software companies finish recruitment by mid-August, placing around 75 percent of the college students.The core sector companies used to come from August, but this year they are non-committal.

Companies have been telling TPOs that their placement requirements are yet to be firmed up since things are not planned yet or they do not know how many projects they will get. "Most of the core companies are in a dilemma. They have promised to come for placements by December," said TPO Federation President Professor Shital Rawandale. Not only are there fewer jobs on offer for 2009-10 but the companies are adopting various techniques to defer the joining dates of candidates recruited last year or even to reject them.

Top colleges like the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) are also facing problems. "Of the 576 students placed last year, only 150 have joined till now. For the rest of them, joining has been deferred from July to December," said Assistant TPO, COEP, SA Meshram.

Some of the selected candidates are being asked to take more tests. With the recession, singing of bonds has also returned. "Some small and medium-sized software companies now want the candidates whom they had already selected to enter into two-year bonds," said a TPO.

Where's India's R&D?Imports 70 percent electronics

Bangalore: India is heavily dependent on imports of electronic goods from countries like the U.S. and China to meet its domestic demand. In spite of having a tax exemption of 150 percent, the Indian industries spend very little on the research and development, said a study.

More than 70 percent of electronics appliances demand is met through imports, the study revealed. The joint study done by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) and Ernst and Young points out that the Indian industry spends only $10 million on research and development.

"Meagre spending on research and development by electronics industry has increased India's dependence on electronics imports inspite of the 150 percent tax exemption under Income Tax Act Section 35 (2AB)," said Sajjan Jindal, President, Assocham.

Imported electronic goods counted to $19.77 billion in recent times, as export earnings were $3.17 billion.

"More than 35 percent of electronics appliances imports in India are sourced from China," said the study.

The study, which is based on inputs from 89 companies, also stated that the Indian electronics and appliances market has less than two percent share in the global market, while share in production is less than one percent.

Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in the electronics industry stood at $0.75 billion during the nine year period from April 2000 to March 2009.

The electronic and appliances industry is poised to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11 percent, as the industry which is estimated at $27 billion in 2008-2009, is expected to touch $40 billion by 2012.

The industry had a growth of 7.1 percent previous year in terms of rupees. The CAGR from 2004-2008 has been 20.3 percent, which also had effects of currency devaluation.

According to the study, the key factors which will drive domestic electronics and appliances market include growth in per capita income, shift in cultural patterns, life-styles and access to credit. About 10 million households are estimated to have income levels above $10,000 per annum. With a growth of 20 percent in per capita income, this segment provides opportunities for luxury products sales. More than 95 percent of households are estimated to be below the income level of $10,000 in 2009-10.

Rising income and changing lifestyle have shortened the replacement cycle, as a television set which is meant for change once in every nine years (It has come down to 4-5 years). Other domestic appliances replacement cycle has also fallen down to 7-8 years from 12 years. With the allocation of $8.15 billion in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), which is going to benefit 44.7 million households, a change in the demand for consumer goods in the electronics and appliances industry is expected.

The joint study has also recommended a 25 year master plan with a long term vision for electronics and appliances industry, deriving strategic options available to attract manufacturing facilities in India.

India terminates maiden moon mission abruptly

Panaji: India's first lunar mission Chandrayaan-1 has been terminated abruptly after repeated attempts to restore radio contact with the spacecraft failed, a top space official said Sunday.

"We had to terminate the mission as we don't have contact with the spacecraft. Though we are disappointed with what has happened, we have managed to salvage a large volume of data," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman G. Madhavan Nair told reporters at Panaji.

The space agency's deep space network (DSN) at Byalalu, about 40 km from Bangalore, lost radio contact with the mooncraft early Saturday while orbiting at 200 km away from the lunar surface.

Repeated attempts to re-establish the communication link with the beleaguered spacecraft from the space agency's telemetry, tracking and command network (Istrac) at Peenya on the outskirts of the city turned futile.

"Our expert team has come to a conclusion that it is not possible to restore the radio link, as the computers onboard the spacecraft for controlling the mission are non-functional for various reasons. Without the computers functioning, the mission cannot proceed," Nair pointed out.

DSN last received data from the lunarcraft at 00:25 IST Saturday when it was over the Indian subcontinent region.

The space agency has set up an assessment committee to look into the performance of the mission in totality, including the reasons for malfunctioning of its critical star sensor, antennae and the computers onboard.

"The moon mission was a great success and 95 percent of its objective was completed. We could collect a large volume of data, including 70,000 images of the moon," Nair added.

The computers on board the craft could have malfunctioned, triggering off the communication failure, he added.

"The power signals which go to the computer systems failed and we had to terminate the mission," Nair said, adding that the spacecraft was orbiting the moon at a distance of about 200 km and it would take nearly 1,000 days for it to hit the moon's surface.

"We have already initiated discussions with the US and Russia to use their radars to track the orbiting spacecraft," Nair said.

He also said lessons will be learnt from Chandrayaan-I and this failure would not delay the launch of Chandrayaan-II.

"There are some marginal corrections needed," he said, adding that he would be meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh next week to speak to him about the mission.

Though ISRO has aborted the mission, the 514-kg Chandrayaan will remain in lunar orbit for over a year and crash onto the moon's surface subsequently.

"We will use the radars of Russia and the US to keep a track of the spacecraft in the lunar orbit and its whereabouts," ISRO director S. Satish told IANS in Bangalore.

Admitting that the two-year timeframe for the mission was too long and premature, the official said some of the experiments were rescheduled and advanced to ensure the data was collected in the first few months of its expedition. "None of the lunar missions has been for more than a year. Many of them last six-seven months whereas our mission lasted for about 10 months against heavy odds, including the hostile lunar environment, solar radiation and other variations in the space," Satish asserted.

Unfazed by the dramatic reverses encountered by Chandrayaan, the Indian space community remains upbeat about the achievements of the ambitious mission in an uncharted arena.

"We have achieved the engineering or technology objectives of the mission by flying the spacecraft 400,000 km to the moon, inserting it into the lunar orbit and placing the Indian tricolour on the lunar surface Nov 14 without hitch," Nair noted.

Similarly, the scientific objectives such as the chemical and mineralogical mapping of the lunar surface using sophisticated sensors, conducting high-resolution remote-sensing of the moon in visible, near infrared, low-energy and high energy x-ray regions and three dimensional atlas of the near and far sides of the moon were also accomplished.

"We have received excellent data from all the 11 instruments and the scientific community and the international agencies participating in the mission are very happy with the quality of the data," Satish claimed.

TCS to hire 25,000

Bangalore: In a move that could bring a smile to many faces, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced that it will hire 25,000 people globally in 2009, with 90 percent of them in India alone. Though the number is bigger when compared to the hiring these days, it is less than last year when TCS appointed around 35,000 people.

With this recruitment drive, TCS also plans to expand its presence into the tier-II cities in India. "We will be hiring 25,000 people this year, which means roughly 25 lakh square feet of work space required and, therefore, we need to grow outside the metros. Tier-II cities are our only focus for expansion in the country as the top rung are clogged and saturated," said Tanmoy Chakrabarty, Vice-President and Head of Government Industry Solutions unit at TCS.

Following this hiring spree, the total global manpower of TCS would go up to more than 1.8 lakh. This will put the IT services provider among large private Indian employers like Tata Steel, which has the total employee strength of two lakh. Going forward, the company, which has an estimated 32 percent market share, plans to cash in on the Indian government's plan to invest Rs. 40,000 crore on IT services.

Currently, 70 percent of the IT segment's revenue is from India, while the rest comes from the U.S., Latin America, Africa and South East Asian countries. However, the revenue contribution from Indian government businesses to the total company revenue of $6 billion is less than five percent, which the company intends to increase to more than 10 percent in the next three years.
