49ers wishful thinking? What's the starting price for a Myles Garrett trade?

There's no question the San Francisco 49ers would love to add defensive end Myles Garrett to their front in 2026. Then again, so would nearly every team in the NFL. The real question is whether the Cleveland Browns would actually consider trading the seven-time All-Pro, who led the league with a record 23 sacks last season.

If Cleveland does entertain offers, Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport lists the 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles as the most logical landing spots.

However, Davenport also explored a different scenario in a recent mock draft—one in which Garrett is dealt to the Los Angeles Rams, a move that would be far less appealing from a 49ers perspective. More on that in a minute.

So, what would it take to pry Garrett away from Cleveland?

Davenport points to last year's blockbuster deal between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers as a potential benchmark.

"Any trade for Garrett would be a whopper—last year's Micah Parsons deal is probably the starting point in terms of compensation," Davenport wrote.

In that deal, the Packers sent two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark to Dallas in exchange for Parsons.

"The Texas A&M (Garrett) product has a no-trade clause, so he would have to sign off on any deal," Davenport added. "And a trade before June 1 would blast the Browns for a $40.3 million dead cap hit.

"However, it's not hard to imagine teams being interested in a guy who has won DPOY honors in two of the past three years and just broke the single-season sack record."

Back to that pre-draft trade projection involving the Rams, Los Angeles sends the No. 13 overall pick, a 2027 first-rounder, and edge rusher Byron Young to Cleveland for Garrett.

With quarterback Matthew Stafford nearing the end of his career, an aggressive, win-now move makes sense for the Rams—and would create major problems for the rest of the NFC West.

The 49ers, looking to keep pace with the Rams and Seattle Seahawks in a competitive division, would have to determine how much they are willing to sacrifice to add an instant-impact player like Garrett.

For San Francisco, the path would likely be even steeper if a team like the Rams were to get involved. Holding the No. 27 overall pick, the 49ers would probably need to offer more than two first-round selections plus a proven player to outbid a package like the one Davenport suggests.

If the Browns ultimately make Garrett available, the bidding will be fierce—and costly.

What would you be willing to give up for one of the NFL's most dominant defenders? Leave a comment below.

With the 2026 NFL Draft just 11 days away, it's time to revisit the latest projections for the San Francisco 49ers. A new wave of mock drafts offers differing strategies for how the team could approach the first round.

Before diving into those projections, here are a few updates on the 49ers' pre-draft evaluations:

Former California cornerback Brent Austin recently told Sports Illustrated's Justin Melo that San Francisco continues to show interest. Melo confirmed the contact included a virtual meeting and a conversation during the East-West Shrine Bowl. Austin also participated in the 49ers' local pro day on April 8.

Former Alabama linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green and former Georgia running back Cash Jones also told Melo they met virtually with the 49ers.

These meetings—and more—are tracked in our comprehensive pre-draft tracker.

Now, onto the mock drafts...

7-round mock draft opens with surprise pick

Alec Elijah of Pro Football & Sports Network released a seven-round mock draft that begins with an unexpected scenario for San Francisco. He projects former Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq to fall to No. 27, where the 49ers capitalize.

"With George Kittle potentially sidelined to open the 2026 season, the 49ers could find themselves in need of both a short-term solution and a long-term answer at tight end," Elijah wrote. "That's where Oregon's Kenyon Sadiq comes into play.

"Widely viewed as the top tight end in this draft class, Sadiq brings a complete skill set that makes him an ideal fit in San Francisco's system. He has the athleticism to stretch the field, the hands to be a reliable target in traffic, and the versatility to line up across multiple spots, all traits that mirror what the 49ers have valued at the position."

San Francisco holds just one additional pick in the first three rounds—No. 58 overall in Round 2—where Elijah projects former USC safety Kamari Ramsey to the team.

"San Francisco will likely need to tap into this deep safety class if they want to bolster their secondary heading into 2026," Elijah wrote. "USC's Kamari Ramsey stands out as a versatile option, capable of contributing in the nickel and playing effectively near the box. He projects as a valuable depth piece early on, with the upside to grow into a starting role as the season progresses or by year two."

The 49ers' remaining four selections all fall in Round 4. Here's how Elijah envisions those picks playing out:

Round 4, pick 127: WR Kevin Coleman Jr., Missouri

Round 4, pick 133: OG Logan Taylor, Boston College

Round 4, pick 138: CB Hezekiah Masses, California

Round 4, pick 139: WR Deion Burks, Oklahoma

Now, let's take a look at a couple of mock drafts from CBS Sports.

49ers target offensive weapon in Round 1

Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports released a first-round mock draft and projects the 49ers selecting former Texas A&M wide receiver KC Concepcion at No. 27.

San Francisco's receiver room has undergone significant changes this offseason, with Mike Evans and Christian Kirk joining the roster while Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, Skyy Moore—and soon, Brandon Aiyuk—move on.

While Elijah had the 49ers adding two receivers in the fourth round, Dajani has the team bolstering the position group much earlier.

"Deebo Samuel déjà vu?" Dajani wrote. "KC Concepcion was named first-team All-SEC in three different categories last season. He starred as a wide receiver, all-purpose player, and return specialist, which earned him the Paul Hornung Award as the most versatile player in the FBS.

"Concepcion caught 61 passes for 919 yards and nine touchdowns in 2025 while returning 25 punts for 456 yards and two touchdowns. What a fit this would be in Kyle Shanahan's offense."

49ers address offensive line in latest projection

CBS Sports' Zachary Pereles takes a different approach in his first-round mock draft, projecting former Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor to San Francisco at No. 27.

The selection would address a long-term need, with Trent Williams set to turn 38 in July and currently in a contract standoff with the team.

"Max Iheanachor didn't play football until 2021, when he began his career at East Los Angeles College," Pereles wrote. "He's now one of the most intriguing prospects in this class. Yes, he's raw, but his size/strength/athleticism combination is rare.

"The 49ers might have found their Trent Williams successor here, though it's worth noting Iheanachor has played right tackle, not left tackle."

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan insists the Los Angeles Rams lobbied to face his team in the NFL's first regular-season game in Melbourne, Australia.

The reasoning? Neutralize one of the 49ers' most consistent advantages.

At SoFi Stadium, Rams home games against the 49ers often feel anything but. A large contingent of San Francisco fans routinely fills the venue, turning it into a de facto home game for the visiting team.

The 49ers' strong Southern California presence—built during the years Los Angeles lacked an NFL franchise—combined with the short trip from the Bay Area, has made fan takeovers a regular occurrence.

For players new to the rivalry, the experience can be jarring.

Rams safety Quentin Lake, a 2022 draft pick, recently recalled his first home game against the 49ers and the shock of stepping onto the field at SoFi Stadium.

"I go into SoFi against the 49ers, and mind you, I didn't really know anything about the rivalry or anything like that," Lake said on the Victory Degree Podcast with Nik Atanackovic. "Get into SoFi, and I'm like, 'Dang, there's a lot of 49ers fans.' Like, OK, I kind of understand that. This is like pre-game, so I'm like, OK, this might be normal, they might come out early."

#Rams S Quentin Lake's honest reaction to the LA Rams playing the #49ers at SoFi Stadium is priceless:

"We get to the game, and like we're coming out of the tunnel and I'm like, why, why do I hear more boos than cheers?! And then you run out of the tunnel and I'm telling you… pic.twitter.com/pcM7rzMdyd
— OurSF49ers (@OurSf49ers) April 10, 2026

It didn't take long for the assumption that the heavy 49ers fan presence was limited to pre-game to change.

"We get to the game, and we're coming out of the tunnel, and I'm like, 'Why do I hear more boos than cheers?'" Lake continued. "And then you run out of the tunnel, and I'm telling you, it's a sea of red."

While the Rams may avoid another 49ers-heavy crowd at SoFi Stadium during the 2026 NFL season, Lake's experience underscores just how impactful—and surprising—the rivalry environment can be.

On Saturday, Marc Adams wrote an article on San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch's draft philosophy. Adams noted several things I did in February and predicts Lynch will follow his pattern of taking a defensive lineman and a wide receiver.

I don't disagree, but this year the variables are a little different.

Now under two weeks away from the 2026 draft, the majority of the mock drafts have the 49ers taking a player at one of three positions: offensive tackle, edge rusher, and wide receiver.

Several solid candidates in each group might well be available, but drafting in the 27th slot, the Niners might not be in a position to take one of the top ones. For instance, offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor from Alabama might fill not only the current left guard problem but also be the future replacement for tackle Trent Williams. But he is often predicted to go earlier.

Likewise, Caleb Lomu from Utah might be a good fit.

But others who might be available—Clemson's Blake Miller and Arizona State's Max Iheanachor, for instance—could be reaches.

The edge rushers who are projected to still be on the board are not that inspiring. Should general manager John Lynch draft Clemson's T.J. Parker or Auburn's Keldric Faulk because they were good in 2024 and have skill sets that might be coached? That kind of approach was on display several years ago when Lynch took defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.

As many as six wide receivers are projected to be taken before San Francisco is on the clock. It might be better to wait until the second round.

But what if someone at another position falls? What if a player, such as Proctor, is available, but someone at another position, someone very good but expected to be long gone, is there for the taking?

Here are a few of those.

Tight End Kenyon Sadiq, Oregon

I have seen one mock draft in which Kenyon Sadiq falls, and the Niners snap him up. Even if Lomu, Proctor, and a few of those receivers are still available, Sadiq is too talented to pass on. Yes, George Kittle is the best all-around tight end in football, and Jake Tonges is a solid backup, but Sadiq is special and has the speed (a 4.39 40!) and skills to be a difference maker. He would start right away with Kittle gone for part of the season, and when George returns, they would form a duo Kyle Shanahan could use in all sorts of creative ways.

Tight end might not be the team's most glaring need, but drafting Sadiq over some who are at those need positions would be a logical move. And the Niners would be set at that position for another decade.

Safety Dillon Thieneman, Oregon

Dillon Thieneman is usually mocked in the mid-teens, but if the next safety listed, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, goes ahead of him (and NFL.com ranks him slightly above Thieneman), the Niners might rush to turn in his card. Thieneman has exceptional speed (4.35) and intercepted eight passes in his college career.

The 49ers currently have Malik Mustafa and Ji'Ayir Brown manning the back end, but their play has been erratic. So many teams have seen the overall play of the defense jump when a good safety joined the team. John Lynch knows how impactful a top safety can be. Just look at what happened when Talanoa Hufanga left in free agency.

Cornerback Avieon Terrell, Clemson

Surely, corner is on Lynch's wish list, but it is typically predicted as a position he will address in a later round. Avieon Terrell is the number three corner on most lists and would likely unseat the Niners' Renardo Green at the corner spot opposite Deommodore Lenoir.

As with safety, this would not appear to be as great a need as the other positions, but the key is choosing the player who will make the biggest difference. A starting corner would be preferable to an average wide receiver.

The trade-up window

John Lynch has not been averse to trading up to get a player he covets. He did it in his first draft, in 2017, to get Reuben Foster, and again in 2020 (Brandon Aiyuk). How far would Lynch be willing to climb to secure the player he wants? Sadiq might be one of those players. Perhaps Thieneman. And there might be someone at one of those need positions whom Lynch did not foresee falling into range. Miami's edge rusher Akheem Mesidor or Indiana receiver Omar Cooper, for instance.

Since the 49ers currently have only six picks, my preference would be to trade back, but I would certainly understand an aggressive move up and might well jump for joy.

We are days away from Roger Goodell announcing the opening of the 2026 draft, but for me, the clock is already ticking.

The San Francisco 49ers not only got knocked out of the NFL postseason by a division rival, but they had to watch that foe, the Seattle Seahawks, win the Super Bowl in Levi's Stadium.

We're well into an offseason in which the 49ers are trying to restock the cupboards and find a recipe to beat the Seahawks. Can they figure out how to beat the defending champs? Specifically, can they find a way to score on that talented Seattle defense?

Last season, the 49ers knocked off the Seahawks in week one, 17-13. It wasn't an offensive explosion, but it was just enough to win. And it was mostly done without George Kittle. So there was some optimism that perhaps the Seahawks wouldn't be the team standing in the 49ers' way. But Seattle's defense was just getting warmed up.

In week 18, with the NFC's top seed on the line and the 49ers at home, the offense managed only three points. It was even uglier in the NFC Divisional Playoff loss in Seattle. Although the 49ers managed to double their scoring (six points), the offense was even more overwhelmed than it had been two weeks before, leaving many to wonder what they could do in the offseason to figure out Mike Macdonald's defense.

On the latest episode of "The Richard Sherman Podcast," the former 49ers and Seahawks CB was asked what the 49ers needed to do offensively to combat a tenacious Seattle defense. Sherman did not hold back on sharing his thoughts regarding the 49ers' offense.

"Well, they got bullied," Sherman said. "They got bullied. They had a chance in San Francisco. The bobbled Christian McCaffrey pass to the flats that ended up getting intercepted, ended up telling that game, was the damning factor. But then you look at the playoff game, and it was decimation."

Sherman is right. It was a decimation. The 49ers lost 41-6. Brock Purdy was only 15-27 for 140 yards and an interception. He was also the team's leading rusher with 37 yards. I'll remind you that Christian McCaffrey also plays for this team.

The 49ers managed only 236 yards and turned the ball over three times. Two Eddy Pineiro field goals were all the offense could muster. So what's the solution?

"You gotta get some attitude back on that offensive line," Sherman added. "I think that's where you gotta go. And I think that's what the San Francisco 49ers have focused on this offseason, just to whether it's depth guys, versatile guys. But I think they're going to continue that in the draft, and they're going to have to. And then you're going to have to get some defensive linemen.

"But to combat this Seahawks defensive line that understands that they have been able to control you, you haven't been able to move them. You haven't been able to move Byron Murphy, and Jarran Reed, and Leonard Williams. You haven't been able to move them, whether it's double-teamed or not. That means your guys aren't strong enough. That means your centers and guards aren't strong enough to move these men. They are taking on double teams and standing pat. And you've seen it consistently in those games. And if you can't move them with the double team, then you gotta get people in there that can."

If Sherman is the preacher, the 49ers fanbase is the choir, shouting some "amens" all over the sanctuary. Ask any fan of the team where Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch need to improve the roster year in and year out, and they'll likely answer offensive line. But Shanahan, Lynch, and perhaps Offensive Line coach Chris Foerster haven't invested as heavily into the offensive line as they have the defensive line or the playmakers. They seem to believe they can win a Super Bowl with an offensive line that is not made up of high-tier players. And to their credit, they've come close twice.

Still, you have to wonder if the offensive line was better in the two Super Bowl losses, if the outcome might have been different. After all, a botched assignment by RG Spencer Burford in Super Bowl LVIII may have cost the 49ers a chance to win the game.

Sherman sounds like one who believes the 49ers must get better along the offensive line.

"You can try to do it with scheme," Sherman said. "You can try to scheme around, like running around them. But they're fast, too. They're really fast. They're disciplined. They know what you're trying to do. So you're going to have to get body movers. You know, at the end of the day, you've got to get guys who can move people. And if you can't move them, then you're going to have the same problem next year. You know, unless you just want Brock Purdy to throw it 45 times and you think you're going to beat the secondary, you're going to beat the scheme that way, which could happen."

Seemingly every offseason, there are questions and whispers about San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan being on the hot seat. Some of those thoughts and rumors are driven by fans and by click-motivated media, but by and large, fans of the team believe their coach is one of the best in the NFL. And the fans aren't the only ones who believe this.

Last week, NBC published its 2026 NFL head coach rankings, and they had Shanahan listed at number three, behind Sean McVay and Andy Reid. Most who cover the NFL would likely place Shanahan in the elite category of NFL coaches. But not everyone agrees. Some believe Shanahan should be on the hot seat, even after such an impressive 2025 campaign.

Still, those who know the game know differently. And future Hall of Fame CB Richard Sherman is one of them.

On the latest episode of the "Richard Sherman Podcast," the former 49ers cornerback was asked if his former head coach's job would be in danger if the 49ers were to miss the playoffs in 2026. Sherman, who appeared to be baffled by the question, made it clear what he thinks of Shanahan, whom he also said is a Top-5 coach in the NFL.

"I don't know who asked this question, but we gotta check what's in their cup," Sherman said. "If Kyle Shanahan misses the playoffs this year, would he be on the hot seat? Absolutely not, absolutely not. He wouldn't even be close. He'd be on an iceberg; he'd still be on an absolute iceberg. And if he somehow was on the hot seat, then there'd be 20 seats in the NFL getting hotter as his gets hotter, because if he ever got fired, so would they.

"Because there are at least 20 teams in the National Football League that would fire their coach that day to have a chance to interview Kyle Shanahan to be their head coach. I might be high on the number, but I would say 15 to 20 teams that would love Kyle Shanahan as their head coach and leader of their franchise. And I don't think that Jed York would be willing to fire Kyle Shanahan to make him available to other teams."

It's no secret that Shanahan would be in great demand if the 49ers severed ties with him. And that's why it won't happen. At least not anytime soon. Shanahan is still one of the game's best.

"There's a reason people think about him and hold his name in such high regard," Sherman added. "I know he hasn't had success in winning the Super Bowl. His team is always in the running. You know they're always going to be a factor, even this year where you lose your top three, four best players throughout the season, you lose your quarterback for almost half the season, he still put out a competitive team."

Sherman went on to add that Shanahan's masterclass during the 2025 season, after losing players like Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Nick Bosa, and Fred Warner, will keep him safe even if the 49ers were to miss the playoffs in 2026. If Shanahan and the 49ers can ever figure out how to stay relatively healthy, there's no limit to what they can accomplish.

And in an ultra-competitive NFC West, they will need to figure that out just to keep up in 2026.

I'm not a college football expert. At one time, I was...so I thought. I would spend each Saturday in the fall watching college football all day long. It didn't matter the teams. I watched as much as I could. I loved watching college football, and I knew the players well.

It's not that way anymore. On Saturdays during the NFL season, I cover the news for 49ers Webzone. So I'm usually writing about the 49ers rather than watching college football. And for those hours I'm not writing, my wife often has other ideas for how I can use my time. I'm too smart (and afraid) to tell her, "No."

So, I realize I'm not a college football/NFL draft expert. But it feels like the 49ers, during the John Lynch/Kyle Shanahan reign, have "a type." In my opinion, they have drafted for needs rather than "best player available" in the first two rounds.

There have been exceptions, of course, but in my humble and non-expert opinion, they have mostly drafted needs over talent. And by talent, I'm talking about taking the best player who was available to them when they drafted. Let's take a look back:

2017- In 2017, their first draft, they selected DL Solomon Thomas third overall. I'm not sure what their thinking was. Thomas wasn't the best player available, and he wasn't really a need, considering they already had DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead. Later, they traded back into the first round to draft LB Rueben Foster, who many (myself included) thought would be a game-changer on defense. We were all wrong.

The 49ers had a slew of needs in 2017. That roster was talent-deprived. So, perhaps they believed these two picks were the best available. We know now they weren't, especially with players like Patrick Mahomes and Christian McCaffrey available. But the 49ers didn't believe QB was a need, and they were never going to take a back that high in the draft.

2018- In 2018, the 49ers took OT Mike McGlinchey in the first round and WR Dante Pettis in the second round. Those were both need picks.

2019- In 2019, they drafted DL Nick Bosa, the best player available and also a need pick. In the second round, they drafted WR Deebo Samuel. Those were great picks, whether they were based on needs or talent.

2020- In 2020, they drafted DL Javon Kinlaw in the first round. That was a need pick because they had traded Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts. I still haven't figured out that one. Later that round, they traded up to draft WR Brandon Aiyuk. The Kinlaw pick wasn't good, but the Aiyuk pick was…until…well, you know. If they had passed on Kinlaw, they could have had CeeDee Lamb and picked a defensive lineman later.

2021- 2021 was certainly a need pick. The 49ers traded away multiple first-rounders to trade up to number three so they could take QB Trey Lance. They were over the Jimmy Garoppolo experiment and wanted a more physically talented player. But they were so focused on making quarterback a need that they overlooked some very talented players who would have filled other needs, like LB Micah Parsons, CB Patrick Surtain II, and OT Penei Sewell. The 49ers drafted OL Aaron Banks in the 2021 second round. They likely saw him as the best player available at a position of need. That's not a flawed strategy. In fact, it's often the best approach.

2022- With no first-round pick in 2022, the 49ers drafted DL Drake Jackson in the second round. Though he was listed as an OLB, the 49ers were drafting him to be an edge rusher to complement Bosa. So, Jackson was essentially a DL. And he probably wasn't the best player available. That makes him a needs pick.

2023- In 2023, the 49ers had no first or second round picks because of the Lance trade and the trade for McCaffrey. Spoiler alert: they didn't do so well with their three third-round picks.

2024- In 2024, they drafted WR Ricky Pearsall in the first round and CB Renardo Green in the second round. Were those need picks, or did they believe those were the best players available?

2025- In 2025, San Francisco picked DL Mykel Williams in the first round and DL Alfred Collins in the second. It may be too early to know, but they both appear to be need picks.

In all, here's how the Lynch/Shanahan regime has picked in the first two rounds:

Round 1: DL (4), LB, OL, WR (2), QB
Round 2: WR (2), OL, DL (2), CB

So, that's six defensive linemen in the first two rounds and four wide receivers. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Bosa has made multiple Pro Bowls, been named All-Pro, and was crowned Defensive Rookie of the Year (2019) and Defensive Player of the Year (2022). Williams and Collins could develop into nice pieces along the starting defensive line.

Aiyuk was an All-Pro in 2023, and Samuel was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2021. Pettis was a reach, and Pearsall is still a work in progress. He looks like the real deal, but he's rarely healthy enough to be on the field.

As I mentioned earlier, it looks like Shanahan and Lynch "have a type." They like defensive linemen and wide receivers. Is that because Shanahan was a wide receiver, then became a WR coach before becoming an offensive coordinator, and ultimately, a head coach? Do they like defensive linemen because Lynch played behind some dominant defensive lines in his Hall of Fame career, and he knows how valuable that can be?

The 49ers, in nine drafts, have taken 10 players in the first and second rounds who have either played DL or WR. They've drafted two offensive linemen (OT and OG) and only three other positions (QB, CB, LB) in the first two rounds during their time in San Francisco.

This is not an indictment of the 49ers' ability, or lack thereof, to draft great players. Obviously, they have had success and have put together some very good rosters in that span. The 2023 roster was the best in the NFL, despite how the Super Bowl ended.

But as draft experts, content creators, and fans do their latest mock drafts and predictions, I wonder if the 49ers will stay on brand or alter their approach and do something different? San Francisco has been mocked to multiple wide receivers and edge rushers (whether they're listed as defensive linemen or linebackers). Will the 49ers draft a defensive lineman and a wide receiver, adding to those already drafted at those positions? Or will they draft a different position, like offensive line or safety? They've also been linked to offensive tackles, guards, tight ends, and defensive backs.

To be fair, when they were drafting those DL and WR, they likely believed those were positions of need. And in some cases, they were. But I wonder how many times they picked based on need, rather than drafting the best player available.

We are a little less than two weeks away from the 2026 NFL Draft. The 49ers have two picks in the first two rounds. They still need that elusive edge rusher they've been searching for since Dee Ford left. And some believe they still need help at wide receiver.

My prediction: the 49ers will add picks 11 and 12 to that group of DL/WR. But maybe they'll fool us all and go in a different direction. Stay tuned!

What will it take for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy to earn the respect many within the organization believe he deserves?

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk recently joined The Jim Rome Show and addressed the ongoing narrative surrounding his quarterback, making it clear where he stands.

Juszczyk described Purdy as "the ultimate competitor," emphasizing that the trait extends well beyond the football field. He recalled an offseason trip to Cabo San Lucas, where a group of teammates saw that competitive edge firsthand during friendly vacation games.

"I love that about Brock, and I love that in my quarterback," Juszczyk said. "I want the most competitive person in the world as my quarterback, and I think that's exactly what we got in Brock."

When it comes to media—and at times fan—perception, Juszczyk admitted he isn't sure what more Purdy needs to prove to be viewed as a top NFL passer.

"I don't know what it is, what it's going to take for this guy to finally get the respect that I think he truly deserves, because season in, season out, he plays tremendously," Juszczyk continued. "And I don't know what it is. I don't know if it's just the fact that he's not a first-round draft pick—if that is just going to be the story for his entire career and be kind of held against him, maybe.

"But I love the guy, as a person, as my quarterback, as a football player. He is the dude."
Purdy is entering his fifth NFL season and has already compiled 11,685 passing yards, 84 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions. In 2023, he set a 49ers franchise record with 4,280 passing yards in a single season. San Francisco signed him to a five-year, $265 million contract in 2025, making him one of the NFL's highest-paid players.

The big question facing the San Francisco 49ers heading into the 2026 NFL Draft is whether to use their first-round pick to reinforce the offensive line or strengthen a struggling defensive front.

San Francisco enters the draft with urgency on both sides of the ball. The pass rush produced just 20 sacks last season—the lowest total in the NFL by a wide margin. At the same time, the long-term future at left tackle remains a priority, with All-Pro Trent Williams turning 38 in July.

Still, assuming Williams and the 49ers settle their contract dispute, the team appears set at its two tackle spots for 2026 with Williams on the left side and Colton McKivitz holding down the right.

Most mock drafts continue to project San Francisco targeting either the offensive line or defensive line—along with wide receiver. Let's take a look at a couple of the latest, including one that utilized artificial intelligence.

But first, a real person weighs in...

Akheem Mesidor an option for the 49ers defensive front

Touchdown Wire released its latest first-round mock draft, with editors from each USA Today team site making selections for their respective franchises.

Kyle Madson of Niners Wire selected former Miami defensive end Akheem Mesidor for the 49ers at No. 27 overall.

"There are some notable questions with Mesidor, who didn't break out in college until his age 24 season," Madson wrote. "He'll be 25 on Draft Day. While that's certainly a red flag some teams will have to contend with, there's enough combination of need and value here that could push San Francisco to pull the trigger on a player who would be a 30-year-old first-time free agent if he plays out all five years of his rookie contract."

Despite the age concerns, Mesidor's production is hard to ignore. He posted a career-high 12.5 sacks last season, emerging as one of the more productive pass rushers in college football. However, compared to younger prospects such as 49ers 2025 first-round pick Mykel Williams, who will be just 22 entering his second season, Mesidor's age has to be considered.

"Mesidor is a three-down player who plays with the level of strength and violence on the edge that should allow him to step in and be effective on Day 1," Madson continued. "Perhaps his ceiling isn't high because of his developmental arc, but the 49ers need immediate contributors, and Mesidor looks to fit that bill."

He added, "They're trying to take advantage of a Super Bowl window. His age can be a problem they deal with in 2029."

AI weighs in on the 49ers' draft options

Jacob Camenker of USA Today also released a first-round mock draft using an unconventional approach—tasking Meta AI with making the selections.

"The chatbot needed only to be prompted once to create its initial mock draft, which featured the correct draft order, only draft-eligible players, and no duplicate picks," Camenker explained. "From there, the only additional prompt needed to feed the chatbot was to provide a brief explanation of each pick."

In that exercise, Meta AI projected the 49ers would select former Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor at No. 27 overall.

"The 49ers are looking for an eventual successor to Trent Williams," Camenker noted. "Meta AI likes Iheanachor's 'upside' as he continues to tap into his athletic potential. Iheanachor has only played football since 2021, so this is a fun gamble for the 49ers."

During the recent NFL meetings in Phoenix, Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers voiced frustration about his team's scheduled Week 1 trip to Melbourne, Australia, where the 49ers will face the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL's first regular-season game in the country.

Shanahan made it clear he sees little benefit in the long international travel.

"No, not at all," Shanahan said. "I don't see any pro. I mean, it's cool for the league to play globally. I think it's awesome, but as far as the team doing it, there's not much benefit to it. Sometimes it's nice to get a bye week after, but it doesn't happen for Week 1."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed those comments during a press conference in Melbourne on Friday.

"Coaches have a focus on winning. That's their number one job," Goodell said. "And so, Coach Shanahan is enthusiastic and a great football coach, but also someone who truly understands the importance of expanding our game globally."

Goodell added that Shanahan's responsibility is to prepare the 49ers to compete regardless of location. The league made it a bit tougher on San Francisco this season by scheduling the team in two international games—the second being in Mexico City.

"But his job is to win. His job is to play," Goodell continued. "I always say coaches like to play at 1:00 and 4:00 and don't get in the way of that. So, we're going to make it a great experience for the team. That's one of the things we focused on. Everybody here—and so many others—have focused on making it a great experience for everyone, the team included.

"When they go back, they've gotta make sure that they're able to continue the competitiveness because this game is real, this counts. And they'll go on to Week 2 as soon as they leave here."

When asked whether he had any advice for Shanahan on handling jet lag, Goodell pointed to his own experience traveling internationally.

"I have an app for him, which I'm going to send to him, because my wife hooked me up with an app, and I gotta tell you, I feel great," he said. "I haven't felt any jet lag at all. We've been here since Tuesday morning, and I thought it was a relatively easy trip."

The San Francisco 49ers enter the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear need to upgrade their pass rush after finishing with just 20 total sacks last season. Using the No. 27 overall pick on an edge rusher remains a strong possibility.

However, Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports suggests an alternative path—one that involves a trade. Vacchiano identified Nick Herbig of the Pittsburgh Steelers as the ideal target for San Francisco during the draft.

The proposed cost: a 2026 second-round pick (No. 58 overall) and a 2027 conditional fifth-round selection.

"Their pass rush was completely punchless last season, with Bryce Huff leading the team with just four sacks," Vacchiano wrote.

Huff, by the way, has since retired, leaving the 49ers in even greater need of reinforcements. Additionally, Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams are coming off ACL injuries that shortened their 2025 campaigns.

"They are hopeful that both Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams will be healthy and back in their old form next season, but they could use another body in the rotation," Vacchiano added. "Herbig, 24, is stuck in a rotation behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith in Pittsburgh and in the final year of his contract. He had 13 sacks in a limited role over the past two seasons and would be well worth the high pick it would probably cost for the Steelers to swap him."

Herbig recorded a career-high 7.5 sacks in 2025 and has totaled 16 sacks over his three-year NFL career, according to Pro Football Reference. He has also compiled 79 tackles (23 for loss), 32 quarterback hits, one interception, three passes defensed, and nine forced fumbles—impressive production for a player with just 11 starts across 45 games.

Advanced metrics further highlight his potential. Herbig earned an 87.3 pass-rush grade in 2025 and a 91.5 grade in 2024 from Pro Football Focus, while generating 48 total pressures last season. His 72.7 run-defense grade in 2025 also underscores his potential appeal to the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers bolstered their wide receiver room this offseason by adding veteran playmakers Mike Evans and Christian Kirk—two experienced leaders expected to help guide a group that has undergone significant turnover.

That leadership could be especially valuable for younger receivers like Ricky Pearsall, who has appeared in only 20 games with 13 starts since being selected No. 31 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Pearsall's 2025 season was limited to nine games due to injury, and he has totaled just three touchdowns over his NFL career. However, he appears to be putting in the work this offseason, recently training with Kirk, as shown in the photo below.

Ricky Pearsall has been training with Christian Kirk this offseason pic.twitter.com/QByYCWOgvW
— Coach Yac 🗣 (@Coach_Yac) April 7, 2026

For 49ers fans, the building of early chemistry between Pearsall and Kirk is an encouraging sign as the team prepares to begin its offseason program on April 20.

Kirk enters his eighth NFL season, having spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans before signing a one-year deal with San Francisco. He has recorded 432 receptions for 5,415 yards and 30 touchdowns during his career.

His best season came in 2022 with the Jaguars, when he tallied 84 catches for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns.

His former head coach, DeMeco Ryans of the Texans, recently offered a strong endorsement of Kirk, highlighting the veteran's leadership and mentorship.

"A great young man," Ryans said. "Really provided a lot to our locker room from a leadership standpoint, of helping out. We had a lot of young receivers this past year and thought Christian did a really good job of helping out those young guys. They're able to lean on him and gain some of his insight and experience that he's had from being a pro for a while."

That type of veteran presence could prove invaluable for developing players like Pearsall, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins as the 49ers prepare for the 2026 season.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch recently addressed speculation surrounding a potential pursuit of Joey Bosa, noting that he does not believe the team can afford the veteran pass rusher—even amid public support from Bosa's mother for a reunion with her sons.

The 49ers have already made significant financial commitments this offseason, adding key contributors such as Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, and Dre Greenlaw. The team also reinforced its defensive interior by trading for Osa Odighizuwa.

San Francisco's pass rush struggled in 2025, finishing with an NFL-low 20 sacks. While the team is expected to address the edge position in the 2026 NFL Draft, it could still revisit adding Bosa, depending on how the board falls.

Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated continues to view San Francisco as an ideal landing spot for Joey Bosa, the older brother of 49ers star defensive end Nick Bosa.

"It's been a month since she (Bosa's mother, Cheryl) posted the edited photo depicting the brothers in 49ers uniforms, but maybe San Francisco is waiting to see whether it lands a top edge rusher in the draft," Manzano wrote. "Also, money could be an issue after the 49ers splurged for wide receiver Mike Evans and took on the contract of defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa."

While Joey Bosa has not generated significant interest in free agency, that could shift after the draft—particularly for teams that miss out on top edge-rushing prospects. Whether the 49ers will be among those teams remains uncertain.

"Regardless of whether Joey and Nick reunite in San Francisco, the older Bosa, who turns 31 in July, should receive more interest after the draft," Manzano added. "He picked up his play in the back half of his lone season with the Bills, recording five sacks and five forced fumbles."

Bosa has recorded five sacks in each of the past two seasons and has not reached double-digit sacks since 2021—though injuries have factored into some of the dip in production.

Meanwhile, Nick Bosa is working his way back from an ACL injury but appears on track to be ready for the start of the 2026 season.

Former Bengals DE Cam Sample agreed to a one-year deal with the 49ers, per source. pic.twitter.com/f3nwZ8oq1H
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) April 9, 2026

The move comes after a disappointing 2025 season in which the 49ers' defense recorded just 20 sacks—the fewest in the NFL. San Francisco is expected to continue addressing its pass rush during the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Bengals selected Sample (6-3, 272) in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Tulane. He spent his first four NFL seasons in Cincinnati, carving out a role as a rotational defensive lineman during the team's run to Super Bowl LVI and the AFC Championship Game the following year.

After missing the entire 2024 season due to a torn Achilles tendon, Sample returned to the Bengals on a one-year deal in 2025.

He appeared in 14 games (two starts) last season, recording 17 tackles (nine solo), two sacks, six quarterback hits, and one forced fumble, per Pro Football Reference.

Over four active NFL seasons, Sample has played in 61 games with five starts, totaling 85 tackles, seven sacks, one pass defensed, and one forced fumble. He has also registered 26 quarterback hits and eight tackles for loss during his time in Cincinnati.

The addition gives the 49ers another experienced option along the defensive line as they look to bolster their pass rush heading into the 2026 season.

Lucas entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick (237th overall) out of Arizona State in 2022, selected by the Detroit Lions. He spent his first two seasons in Detroit, appearing in 18 regular-season games and three postseason contests primarily as a special teams contributor.

In March 2024, Lucas signed a one-year contract with the 49ers and spent the season on the practice squad. He signed a reserve/future contract with the team in January 2025.

During the 2025 regular season, Lucas appeared in 15 games for the 49ers. He recorded nine tackles and was credited with one pass defensed. While he played only 98 defensive snaps, the defensive back logged 204 on special teams, contributing to that unit's improvement in 2025.

The San Francisco 49ers are generating buzz in the 2026 NFL Draft cycle, with multiple analysts projecting high-impact selections to strengthen both the offense and defense.

Could Kenyon Sadiq fall to the 49ers?

Kenyon Sadiq shot up draft boards after a standout NFL Scouting Combine performance. The former Oregon tight end ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash, recorded a 43.5-inch vertical jump, and posted an 11-foot-1 broad jump. Measuring 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds, Sadiq has the size and athleticism to complement George Kittle in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.

Most mock drafts have Sadiq coming off the board before San Francisco's No. 27 pick, but Josh Edwards of CBS Sports projects him falling to the 49ers.

"This is the latest Kenyon Sadiq has been available in a mock draft exercise in quite some time," Edwards wrote. "There are a number of teams who make sense for Sadiq, but none that are obvious. Kyle Shanahan can get wonky with his personnel packages with George Kittle and Sadiq on the field in the short-term."

Bolstering the trenches in early rounds

Ryan Guthrie of Pro Football & Sports Network released a three-round mock draft projecting the San Francisco 49ers to strengthen the trenches on both sides of the ball with their first two picks.

In the first round, Guthrie has the 49ers selecting former Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods, highlighting the team's need after injuries decimated the defensive front last season. Pairing Woods with defensive end Nick Bosa could provide the boost the defensive line needs.

"Peter Woods fits the mold perfectly. At 6-foot-3, 315 pounds, he brings power, leverage, and versatility, able to impact both the run and pass game," Guthrie wrote. "While his 2025 season had ups and downs, flashes of elite athleticism, like moving along the edge at Clemson, show just how disruptive he can be.

"For San Francisco, Woods adds depth, a menacing interior presence, and someone who can help collapse pockets. Pairing him with Bosa gives the 49ers more flexibility and dominance up front, shoring up a unit that's aiming to stay healthy and elite all season long."

The 49ers have one more selection in the first three rounds—a second-round pick at No. 58 overall. Guthrie has the team selecting former Oregon offensive guard Emmanuel Pregnon at that spot.

"The San Francisco 49ers look to their offensive line rebuild by selecting Emmanuel Pregnon, a powerful interior lineman who helps accelerate the team's long-term plans in the trenches as Trent Williams' career approaches its twilight," Guthrie wrote.

"At 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, Pregnon combines size, mass, and length with the kind of arm strength and leverage that allows him to dominate defenders at the point of attack. His success at Oregon came from getting his hands on defenders quickly and violently, using power to anchor or redirect while also demonstrating the lateral agility to cover ground and climb to the second level."

Assuming the 49ers reach an agreement with Trent Williams on a reworked contract, left guard remains the only spot on the offensive line without a clear starter.

A Trent Williams successor in Round 1

Vinnie Iyer, in his latest first-round mock draft for Sports Illustrated, projects the 49ers landing a long-term replacement for Williams. He envisions former Georgia offensive tackle Monroe Freeling falling to San Francisco at No. 27 overall.

"The 49ers will need to think about replacing Trent Williams (6-5, 320 pounds) at left tackle in the near future and will need to debate that vs. taking more wide receiver help," Iyer wrote. "Freeling would be the ideal stash to make a smooth transition at the critical left tackle."

49ers trade up for Monroe Freeling

Luke Easterling of Athlon Sports also projects the 49ers selecting Freeling in the first round—but with a twist. Easterling has the team trading up to the No. 15 overall pick to secure the offensive lineman.

The proposed trade would send San Francisco's No. 27, No. 58, and No. 127 overall selections to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, potentially leaving the 49ers with just four total picks in the draft.

Not ideal, but perhaps necessary for a top-tier target.

"If you want one of this year's top offensive tackle prospects, and you're picking near the back of the first round, you're gonna have to move up for one," Easterling explained. "That's the reality for a team like the 49ers, which needs a long-term succession plan at left tackle even if they're able to work out a deal to bring back Trent Williams for the 2026 season.

"Freeling would be an ideal target, with the athleticism necessary to excel in Kyle Shanahan's scheme, and the upside to eventually develop into an elite blocker with size, power, and physicality."

Another offensive tackle option for the 49ers

Christian D'Andrea of For the Win released a two-round mock draft, also projecting the 49ers to add a long-term replacement for Williams with their first pick—former Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu.

"No matter how the drama with Trent Williams unfolds, the Niners need a succession plan for their soon-to-be 38-year-old left tackle," D'Andrea wrote. "Lomu is a high-ceiling pass protector who can fill an immediate role if a Williams trade comes to fruition. As a player who needs to improve his leverage and play strength, however, there's no better mentor than the All-Pro at left tackle in San Francisco.

"Lomu is an elite athlete who needs to dial up his aggression in order to reach his potential, especially as a run blocker. He plays with a high IQ, learns quickly, and, importantly, was a durable asset in Salt Lake City the last two seasons."

In the second round, D'Andrea has the 49ers selecting former Connecticut wide receiver Skyler Bell.

"A Kyle Shanahan offense and an elusive wideout who averaged better than eight yards after catch per reception in 2025. Yep, that'll work," he wrote.
