Youth Convention

Sunday, October 31st will be the deadline to sign-up and pay for youth convention. Convention will be November 19th and 20th in Hot Springs, AR. Rev. Hubbard will be providing worship, and our very own Kyle Hughes will be one of the speakers. This will be an exciting weekend.

We will leave in the morning on Friday, so students will have to miss a day of school in order to join us on the trip.

The cost for the trip is $85/student. This covers registration, hotel, and travel expenses. Students will need to bring money for food and any shopping they would like to do.

This trip will be the weekend following our final home football game, and as a reward for those who have been able to assist us in raising funds the youth fund will pay $35 of the cost for any student who works all 5 games. The remaining $50 can be paid by October 31st or can come from the student's account (the money they raised).

I am working on reconciling student accounts now, and hope to have statements avaialable this weekend.

This should be a fun trip for all. Don't miss it.

Car Wash this Saturday!!!

Don't forget that this Saturday from 9:00 - 3:00 will be our car wash to raise money for our mission trip. All students that work will have their accounts credited. We need as many students as possible to work the car wash. Please arrive at 8:45 to help setup.

Traci Rhoades will be running the car wash, as Christina and I will both be in Little Rock for fireworks training. I know that each of our students will treat Traci with the highest level of respect, and that you all understand that she has the same authority as I would if I were present. I am sure we will not have any issues.

As always, please remember that you will be serving as the face of our youth ministry, our church, and our Lord this weekend. Please dress and behave appropriately. I have asked that no bathing suits be worn (except for under appropriate clothing). Appropriate clothing is shorts no shorter than 2 inches above the knee, and a dark colored t-shirt or tank top with at lease 2 inch straps. No tube tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, or light colored clothing.

I would also recommend sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Remember that it will be hot, and you will be washing some and holding signs some, so you won't always have cool water to keep yourself cool.

The car wash will be held at the harps store on College Avenue. This store was hesitant to let us use their facilities due to problems in the past, but they have agreed to do so since we are a church. Please do not do anything to let them regret it.

Finally, please let me know if you will be working the car wash, as I would like to be able to let Traci know who she can expect to be there. Currently I have the Lime girls, Morganne, Keylee, and McClain.

Fireworks Fundraiser

This year 3 Degrees Youth Ministry will be opening two fireworks stands in Fayetteville. They are located near the Walmart store on Joyce and at the Clarion on Highway 62 (6th Street).

Fireworks stands mean we need workers. This is an awesome opportunity for students to raise money to go to youth camp, missions trips, and national fine arts. I strongly encourage all students to get involved in this fundraiser.

If you see a spot that tickles your fancy, just shoot me an email and let me know that you'd like to work it. I will give our students and parents one week to sign-up before opening up the opportunity to children's church parents and other people.

Meeting this Wednesday

This wednesday night we would like to meet with all of our youth and parents to discuss some very important matters concerning the future of our group including fundraising, fine arts (including national fine arts), youth camp, and foreign mission trips.

I need everyone's input to make some very big decisions this week.

Youth Rally Tomorrow!!!!!

I wanted to let you all know that there will be a youth rally tomorrow night at 7pm. It will be held at First Assembly of God in Fayetteville, and the speaker will be Dane Hall.

We will leave the church at 6:00, grab some dinner on the way, and then head to the rally. I expect us to be back to the church around 8:30 - 8:45.

I apologize for the late notice on this one. The date was changed due to a scheduling conflict, and my records did not get updated. This should be a great evening getting to hear from our District Youth Director. I hope you can all attend.

Youth Garage Sale

We have set a date for the youth garage sale. It will be the weekend of May 14th and 15th. We have sent a message to the church family to request donations.

We need as many students and parents as are able to volunteer to work this event. Only those who work will receive funds. Please mark your calendars for this.

Also, please go through your things, and find what you might be able to donate to the sale. You teens barely wear some of your clothes, and those are the types of things that can really bring in some money.

Both Christina and Pastor Brian will be unavailable to work during the sale due to previous engagements, but Debra Lime has volunteered to coordinate this for us, and hopefully some of our sponsors will be available.

Youth Outing - Red/White game

We have a youth outing this Saturday (4/24) from 5:00 - 8:00.

We will meet at the church at 5:00, and travel on the vans to the University of Arkansas campus to see the Razorback Football 2010 Red/White Game. We will return to the church around 8:00. The game is FREE to get in....

We assume they will be selling concessions at the stadium and we know that they will be having sales on all Adidas Razorback gear in the Hog Heaven shops. We will not be going anywhere for dinner (unless the game gets REALLY boring), so students should eat before they come or bring plenty of money (We all know how expensive concessions are at the stadium).

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Just a reminder... June 13th

June 13th is a big day for the students in our youth ministry.

The remaining balances for both camp ($75) and our summer missions trip ($330) are due on that date.

I realize that this is a lot of money due at the same time, but I wanted to give you as long as I could on both.

Several students are making progress towards these, and many have enough in their accounts to cover all or part of the cost. I need to know in advance if you want to use your account for this.

As a point of encouragement, we have 1 student whose way on the missions trip is already paid for just by sending out support letters to family. And another has raised about 1/2 of their money already.

Unfortunately, this is the date I have to send in all of the funds, so anyone who has not paid by June 13th will have to be removed from the trip and will lose their deposit. I am confident that this will not have to happen.

I am excited to see what God does in the lives of our students at both youth camp and the summer missions trip.

Free Willy

As most of you know, we have started a campaign to help us keep focus on our goals for Speed the Light and Our Sacrifice, His Miracle. This campaign is called "Free Willy", and we are trying to free Willy G. Fish from a cylindrical cell in a fish tank in our youth lounge.

As we raise money, the water level in the 30 gallon tank will be raised as well, and soon, Willy will be able to swim right over the top of his cell. I have talked to Willy, and he is excited about this day coming.

I wanted to let you all know that our goal is just a tad over $3,000. To date we have raised $27.

I want to encourage everyone to be working diligently towards your goals, and let's see if we can free Willy by the beginning of the school year.

A little encouragement...

Whenever I'm struggling to do what's right, it always helps to have a little encouragement. And I've found that one form of encouragement that really works for me is money.

For example, I sometimes struggle with the idea of getting up and going into the office on a really pretty day. But I am encouraged to do so by the fact that they will pay me to do so (or more importantly will not pay me if I don't).

I have also had times in my life when police officers have encouraged me to slow down by using money.

This way of thinking is what made me decide to start a new program to encourage students to bring their Bibles to church. I feel that it adds to what a student can get out of service when they have their Bible with them. And I realize that many students have Bible applications on their cell phones, but it is difficult to tell whether a student is reading the Bible, playing a game, updating their facebook, or texting the student next to them.

We have started a contest to help students remember to bring their Bibles to church.

Every time a student brings his or her Bible (a real one, not a cell phone application) to youth service (show it to the ladies in the snack bar - No sharing please) or discipleship class (show it to me) he or she will get a point.

At the end of the year the student with the most points will win a cash prize of $40.

This Saturday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 we will be having a youth outing at the Springdale Youth Center. We will meet at the youth center and hang out playing volleyball, ping pong, pool, etc....

As I sit here watching our two large human video groups practice, I am amazed at the talent and dedication of our students. We have such an amazing group, and I am thrilled to be a part of 3 Degrees Youth Ministry.

Plans for this Weekend (Fine Arts)

We will leave the church at 6:30 AM on Saturday. We will not be stopping for breakfast, so please take care of this beforehand. Please do not be late, as we will be pressed for time.

Registration begins at 8:00, and the first event is at 9:15. Anyone going down to watch will need to register at the door as a non-participant. The cost for this is around $5.

Once we have a schedule with all of our people, we will decide when to eat lunch and dinner. We will likely have lunch at the chinese place and dinner at a burger place (Around $6 per meal). All students will be expected to ride on the vans and eat together. Parents and visitors are welcome to join us or go on their own.

As always, please remember that only Christina and Brian will be asking for scores. This is at the request of the district office. We will be doing this a few times throughout the day.

They are going to try to wrap everything up around 7:00, so we should hopefully be home between 9:00 and 10:00.

Mission Trip Update

With yesterday being the deadline to sign up for the mission trip to the Appalachian Mountains, I wanted to give everyone an update. The numbers are in, and we will be taking 27 people (22 students and 5 leaders) to Tennessee.

I am thrilled with this number. I was worried this year that we might not have many students because of the cost being much higher than last year, but our students have really stepped up to the plate.

We had one student who turned in several checks she had received selling crafts that she made to earn her deposit. Another student turned in nearly $15 of their deposit in change that they scavenged. Also impressive is the fact that 11 of our students didn't have to come up with any money at all for their deposit, becaused they raised it by working the Hogs games.

I am super excited about this trip, and cannot wait to see how God affects our lives. I am proud to be a part of such an awesome group of students.

Skate night

This Saturday, February 20th, we will be having a youth outing to Starlight Skatium in Fayetteville. We will leave the church at 6:00, go grab a bite to eat, then head to the skating rink. Parents can pick students up any time at the skating rink, or we will return to the church at 9:30.

The cost for skating is $7, which includes skates. Dinner should cost $3 - $6 depending on what you eat.....

Meet Me at the Mall - With a Twist

As most of you know, on the 4th Wednesday of each month we meet off campus at the Northwest Arkansas Mall food court. These nights have been geared mostly around fellowship, and while they are some of our biggest nights, and are very successful at promoting fellowship, I've always felt that they lack something.

This year we want to take a new approach to these nights. I want our youth staff, our students, and even our parents to be able to take a journey of learning and growing together.

Beginning this month, I will assign a chapter from a book on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

We will all have one week to read the chapter, and the students will discuss it with our youth staff at the mall. Preparing in advance will help us all be on the same page, and help us accomplish more in our limited time.

After we discuss the chapter at the mall, I will be encouraging students to find time in the following week to discuss it with their parents. This will allow parents the opportunity to be a part of this area of their student's spiritual growth.

I have identified a book entitled Facing Your Giants bx Max Lucado. This book can be purchased for $12 at Christian Book Outlet or $6 at Amazon.com. There is also a version of this book written specifically for teens. This book is not available locally, but is available for $10 at Amazon.com. I have ordered the teen version, and will evaluate it when it arrives. At that time I will make a decision as to which version we will use.

For this month, we will use Chapter 1 of the original book.

I look forward to seeing this partnership between parents and our ministry accomplish great things.

Mission Trip Meeting

Youth Camp 2010 - Another Record Year

This evening I sent off our youth camp applications to the district office in Little Rock. Each year that we have been blessed to be on staff we have taken more students to camp than ever before. Last year we took 31 students, and this year we have several students who are not able to go, so I had resolved myself to the fact that this year we wouldn't be able to say that again.

To my surprise, this year we have 38 students signed up for youth camp. WOW... Now we're working hard to find the transportation needed to take so many people, but that is a great problem to have.

It never ceases to amaze me how awesome our youth group is.

Movie: To Save a Life

Good Evening,

Well, with school out, I imagine many of you will be ready to take your students' very life by tomorrow. Hopefully I can help. Tomorrow at 4:00 I will be going to Razorback Cinema in Fayetteville to see the new movie "To Save a Life". Several students will be joining me, and I would like to invite you and yours. Following the movie, I plan to go to Starbucks for some coffee, and to discuss the film with whomever wants to join me.

We will not be meeting at the church, and we will not be taking a van. I am just going to the movies, and inviting any students and parents that are interested to join me for the afternoon.

This is a very impactful film, and could open the door for you to talk with your student about some very serious issues. Before making the decision about whether or not to let your student go on this outing, I encourage you to learn more about this movie. While it is a Christian film, it is definitely not your average Christian film. It is rated PG-13 for "some drug content, teen drinking, suicide, disturbing images, sexuality and mature thematic elements". This is a decision that each parent will have to make for themselves. I will not be letting Courtney see this one.

Jr. High Boys Camping Trip

The 3 Degrees Jr. High Boys Camping Trip has been scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 21-22, 2010. This campout will be $10 per student, and is open to all boys going into the 7th - 9th grades in the fall of 2010.

This is a great time for the younger boys to bond with each other and with the new boys coming into the youth group.

More information will be forthcoming, but mark your calendars for May 21-22.

Youth Camp!!!!!!

The time has come, once again, for us to prepare ourselves to go to youth camp. Each year I am thrilled about this opportunity. As I am sure any of our staff will attest, youth camp is the single most important event that we offer for the students of 3 Degrees Youth Ministry.

Imagine this. Your student goes away for one whole week without their TV, radio, Ipod, computer, internet or the negative influence of their non-Christian friends. Each day they wear themselves out with go carts, basketball, swimming, and other activities. And each evening they experience church services like many have never experienced before. They are immersed in the love of Christ, and the spirit of the Lord surrounds them. For one full week we as youth workers have the opportunity to pour into their lives without any distractions. Most students come home with a newfound love for the Lord, and an excitement to win their world for Christ.

This year we will try to attend camp #4 from June 21st – 25th. The speaker will be Rev. Kendall Alfaro, a dynamic young speaker with a heart for God. This camp will fill up very quickly, and if we want to get into this camp we must get our registration in early.

Registration forms are available at this time in the church office, and will be available at youth service this Wednesday night. Our church deadline to have registration forms completed and turned into myself is Sunday, February 7, 2010. I will be mailing the forms on February 8th. The deposit for camp is $50, and the remaining balance (due at camp) is $75 (for a total of $125). The $50 deposit is due when the application is turned in, and is non-refundable and non-transferable. Many of our students have funds available in their accounts to cover all or part of their camp registration.

It is extremely important to me that your student is given the opportunity to experience camp with us. I want every student to attend with us. Each year for the past 3 years we have taken more students than the year before, and I would love to see this trend continue. For this reason, I ask that each of you speak with me if you have any concerns about your students attending camp with us (rather than just dismissing the idea). This includes any concerns about finances. I realize that $125 is a lot of money, and if you have more than one student it becomes that much more difficult. We will be asking the church to assist us in sending students to camp, as well as the fundraisers we have done. I will NEVER turn a student away from camp due to finances if I can help it at all, so please speak with me if this is a concern for you.

Youth Rally Tonight!!!!

Tonight is our annual Speed the Light goal-setting rally. It will be at Springdale First Assemby of God at 7:00. We will leave the church at 6:00 and return around 9:00. We will NOT be stopping to eat before or after the rally.

Christmas Party Moved!!!!

Due to an illness the Youth Christmas Party has been moved to the youth lounge. We will still have lots of fun, so please make plans to join us.

Also, please help us make sure that everyone knows about the change. Send out text messages, change your facebook status, send smoke signals, etc, etc, etc.....

Don't forget to dress as your favorite Christmas character and bring a $5 gender-neutral gift.
